Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for my e-arc in exchange for an honest review! I liked this one! It was fast paced, took place within a day, which adds to the intensity. I love thrillers that happen in one day! I binge read most of this in one day because I had to know what happens next! I didn’t totally figure out the end, but once it was revealed, it made total sense! I really liked the FMC mother! She was the best!
This is a fast paced, fun, domestic thriller. I liked the characters, the setting and how it all took place in one day. It added to the urgency of the story, along with the short chapters. Pick this one up if you like thrillers!
Thank you NetGalley, Simon & Schuster Canada and the author Amy Stuart.
Mystery novel set in one day, slow burn, interesting characters.
Well written.
When I saw that this was recommended for fans of Ashley Audrain and Lisa Jewell I knew I had to read it and I was not disappointed. The book starts as the title suggests, with a death at a party, and the rest of the story follows the events over that day leading up to the mystery death. I wouldn't categorize it as a thriller, more of a family and small community drama. It was definitely a page turner with secrets from the past and present being revealed.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. The hook is instantaneous, but then it was yanked away and took me awhile to get back into (it is set in one day while a wealthy woman prepares for a party at her home which just doesn't interest me at all). It does pick up once the mystery gets going a bit. A fast read for a plane or the beach but I don't think it will stick with me.
Of all the things a hostess pictures when planning a party, standing over a corpse in the bathroom is definitely not one of them.
And yet that’s exactly where the main character finds herself at the end of what has got to be the longest day of her life. The novel starts late that night and then skips back to the morning so we can see everything that led up to that moment. I loved this twisty thriller that follows Nadine, mother of two teenage children & daughter of a famous author. Between party preparations & some unique family drama, this one day is filled with flashbacks to exactly thirty years previous (when Nadine experienced the biggest trauma of her childhood). The author also expertly weaves in secrets that Nadine is holding onto, & shows her thought process in trying to investigate truths hidden by her family, friends, & neighbors.
I was amazed at how much could be packed into a book that only covers one day, & I found the ending to be very satisfying. I will definitely read Amy Stuart’s work in the future!

This cover is gorgeous and the description of this book had me so excited to read it.
This was a very slow burn book. It followed the main character Nadine as she spent her day preparing for her moms birthday party, which made it feel like it was dragging.
There was a little mystery from the past as well as one from the present throughout the book.
I really enjoyed the relationships in the story between Nadine and her family, as well as Paul (her husband) and their friends.
I found the ending was very fast and abrupt and left you with a few questions unanswered
Thank you Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Interesting premise but it took too long to get into. 5 stars for DNF as I cannot comment on the overall quality of this book.
I LOVED this book. It really grabbed my attention and kept me guessing to the end! This is a new author for me and one I will be following
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC of this one!
The Death at the Party is a slow burn suspense novel - more of a domestic suspense rather than a thriller. We begin with a dead body, and then we flashback to earlier, and are brought through Nadine, the narrator's day as she prepares to throw a party.
While the narrative slows at some points, I never felt bored and the stayed engrossed throughout the book waiting to see who would be the victim. There are a few different stories thread throughout, flashing back to Nadine's childhood, and touching on her daughter's life as well .I liked that the novel was really a story of several generations.
Many trigger warnings for this one so definitely take a look at those ahead of reading!
The book opens with .. a death at the party, and we know that our narrator , Nadine, is the murderer.. but why ? We go back to earlier that day to find out what has brought Nadine and her victim to this point - and who exactly is her victim ?. Definitely a slow burner but a well written suspense novel.
This was an intense and riveting read. This entire story takes place over the course of a day, which contributes to the tension and suspense as I raced toward the conclusion. This is my first novel by this author and she's one I will be looking out for in the future. This is a novel that I will be recommending to fans of slow burn domestic suspense and family drama with its well-developed characters and unique timeline of events that is sure to keep readers hooked.
Nadine is throwing her mother a big 60th birthday party. She has all the details planned out and is ready to be the best hostess but by the end of the night, one of the guests will be dead. Secrets from a birthday party exactly 30 years ago will come to light and force Nadine to confront a trauma from her childhood. How far would you go to protect the ones you love?
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and Net Galley for the advanced eGalley of this novel.
A Death at the Party is a gripping suspense that’s
full of secrets, drama, vengeance and murder; both past and present.
Told over the course of a day with flashbacks from the past, we are unraveling two murders and questioning everyone.
This was such an engrossing read and I thoroughly enjoyed myself!
There are darker themes so please check your TW
Thank you so much to Netgalley and publishers Simon and Schuster Canada for providing me a copy to review :)
I had really high hopes for this one, the cover and description really drew me in.
I enjoyed the relationship between Nadine and her mother, as well as the relationships showcased with the various characters in the novel. I found all the connections interesting and that things tied together nicely at the end. I did find the amount of characters and their connections hard to follow, I had to make myself a chart to keep track of all the characters and their relationships.
I found the twists were well placed and made sense (if not a little predictable), but the pacing of the book extremely slow. I would classify this book as a domestic suspense mystery instead of thriller.
I do feel as though the book ended extremely abruptly, and there were several questions left unanswered.
I think overall this was a decent read, but the pacing, details and huge cast of characters made it hard to follow/get into.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for an E-ARC in exchange for an honest review. ❤️
I thought I was going to get more a Robyn Harding type of ‘neighbourhood’ thriller here, full of good trashy drama, but it’s really more about our main character as we follow her throughout the day of the titular party she is throwing for her author mother. the entire story is focused around Nadine and I personally think I would’ve enjoyed this more if we followed other perspectives during the events of the night. it reminded me of that BA Paris book about the family party but not as captivating
A Death at the Party is Amy Stewart's latest release. This is a standalone book.
I was hooked in the first few pages. The prologue gives us a body in the basement and lots of questions. Curious cat that I am - I needed to know who, why and how.
The book takes place over 24 hours. Nadine is hosting a 60th birthday party for her mother, a bestselling author. Nadine is a meticulous planner and she wants this party to be perfect, so nothing can go wrong. But… you just know it’s not going to go smoothly. There are simmering undertones between each and every character, from the immediate family, to the neighbours, work colleagues, acquaintances, clerks and more. These connections are all intricately woven together as the book progresses.
The tension ratchets up and up with every hour that passes. The compressed timeline heightens everything - actions, emotions and more. We're with with Nadine as she tries desperately to keep all of her balls in the air. But they start to drop one by one. The fall out is not what I expected at all. I had some inklings that things might be headed in a certain direction, but was happily surprised by the direction Stuart took the tale.
I thought the mystery of the book was well done. But, just as much of standout for me was the depiction and exploration of Nadine. An easy five stars.
Nadine Walsh is staring at the body of a man lying dead on the floor of her basement. She can hear the sounds of laughter and music coming from her mother's birthday party up stairs. People are drinking Prosecco and having a great time chatting and dancing to the live band.
Marilyn Millay and her daughter Nadine are best pals as well as mother and daughter. Nadine and her mother have gone through the good and bad times together, starting out in a small, crummy one bedroom apartment with Marilyn working as a waitress to put food on the table. Marilyn is now a famous author and loved by all. She is an extremely private person and Nadine feels the need to protect her. Especially from journalist Julian Simone who is trying to find out all about Marilyn and her past.
But today is her mom's birthday and nothing will ruin the celebration. As Nadine goes about preparing for last minute preparations, we learn more about the pair. One thing we learn is that Nadine is a very tense person. It's palpable throughout her day. Why such tension?
A Death at the Party will keep you in its grips. With the turn of every page there's a new mystery.
I highly recommend this delightful mystery, but you may need a valium to keep you calm as you reach the surprise conclusion.
Many thanks to Simon and Schuster and Netgalley for allowing me a preview of this excellent mystery.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was intrigued by the first chapter. I love a good teaser start to let me know what the book has in store for me.
It took me longer then I would like to get through the book as it is not my favorite style of writing. I love a good Slow burn, but I hate a lot of details. I have brain fog due to my MS and it make be have to go back and remind myself who certain people were.
So I love most of the book, and the aspects I didn't were mostly my own fault. So a 4 is fair I think
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for this read, A Death at the Party. The book was slow paced and full of characters. This was a bit to slow for me as the book takes place in one day but it seems to have taken longer to me by the amount of detail involved but it was needed as well to make the novel clear. It was enjoyable and a cozy read to read in a day or two.
Nadine is hosting a 60th birthday party for her mother tonight but first she has to tie up some loose ends.
This book has a lot going on. There seems to be drama in all corners of Nadine’s life: her children, her mother, and her marriage. She even has tabloid journalists trying to shake her down.
I gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫.
Things I loved:
🌸 The family dynamics
🌸 The cast of characters in her town
🌸 The slow burn 🔥
