Thank you so much to the publisher for sending me a copy of this cookbook! I tried out many recipes from this book and I am continually using many of them on a monthly basis! I would definitely recommend this if you’re even just looking into more healthful eating but it is the best for people following an autoimmune diet!
As someone who has had autoimmune issues I consider this a valuable tool and a resource for the personal library. You can really feel the difference after changing the diet. Some of the recipes would require more expensive ingredients but that can't be helped in my opinion. The underlying principles of what to eat and what to avoid is valuable.
This will be awesome for those living a gluten free (as well as other allergies) lifestyle. The author does warn some recipes will be finicky and I can see that with the different flours. The pictures made me want to bake everything immediately.
I had to order this book from my local library because the NetGalley ARC disappeared from the Ap before I could get to it. I finally received my Ebook format copy from my local library and I have to say, it was well worth the wait!
How many of us- my humble self included - have tried to faithfully follow a gluten-free/dairy-free, almost everything-free! recipe, only to have to feed it to the trash can? And all those strange ingredients......!!!!???!!! Yikes!
Well, Wendi-Washington-Hunt does use a few new an interesting ingredients: cassava flour and tigernut flour are the two basic flours that she uses for most of her baked goods, and organic palm oil is the standard shortening. Carob is the suitable substitute for chocolate, and grass-fed gelatin is the main thickening agent, along with tapioca flour, that is often used. But I wouldn't say that they were overly exotic or hard to find. Any good bulk or health food store would probably carry all of the above.
I wish I could have reproduced the pictures for many of the sumptuous recipes: the Mint Chocolate Truffles looked incredibly decadent, whereas the chunky N'Oatmeal cookies had my nostrils flaring. The author warns us that some of the recipes can be "finicky" and you should make NO SUBSTITUTIONS - you do so at your own peril.
I figured that once you learned to bake with cassava or tigernut flour a time or two, then your "flop" ratio should rapidly lessen. The Blueberry pie photo almost made me run out the door to get all the ingredients together, as did the recipe for Mushroom Onion Tartlettes.
Cakes, Bars, tarts, galettes, breads, muffins - just about every baked good you can imagine has been represented in this autoimmune cookbook. Because I have RA, I have more or less given up on having desserts and other baked goods. Wendi Washington-Hunt has done the impossible: given you well explained recipes that WORK, with ingredients that aren't impossible to find in your local health food store.
I have upped my rating for this excellent and beautifully illustrated gluten free cookbook to five well-deserved stars. Well done! My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for attempting to provide me with an ARC of this cookbook in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to the Toronto Public Library as well for ACTUALLY PROVIDING ME WITH THE EBOOK SO THAT I COULD READ AND REVIEW IT AFTER ALL - I am so glad I persevered!
The Autoimmune Protocol Baking Book by Wendi Washington-Hunt, is genius! Unfortunately I did not get to bake any recipes at this time, but this book will be purchased at a later date. For anyone who has dietary restrictions can understand how hard it can be to bake, Wendi took a challenge and ran with it. Her baking book comes highly recommended!
Health is wealth!
Very easy to understand and I can already see it being a popular check-out item.
With all my autoimmune issues, you bet I've done an autoimmune diet. This cookbook is fantastic for people who need to use this diet for health reasons and miss baked goods. Since I have an egg allergy, among others, I'm likely to pick up a copy of this! The recipes look fantastic and the photography is very good (but could have had more--my only complaint!) The selections include both sweet and savory baked goods. I can't wait to try out the pie crust.
The Autoimmune Protocol Baking Book: 75 Sweet & Savory, Allergen-Free Treats That Add Joy to Your Healing Journey is a cookbook designed for individuals with certain dietary restrictions, but can be used by anyone looking to reduce inflammation in their bodies. There is a good introduction, with instructions on how to start the elimination diet, then reintroduce foods to discover triggers. There is a good section on foods to avoid and those to enjoy. The introduction also has the typical information, on tools, equipment, and essential ingredients.
The recipe sections are as follows, with some of the standout dishes.
Pies and Tarts: Dutch Apple Pie; Pumpkin Pie; Key Lime Tarts
Cookies: Chocolate Chip Cookies; Apple Cinnamon Breakfast Cookies; Snickerdoodles
Bars: Apple Butter Bars; Chunky Monkey Bars; Shortbread
Cakes: Blueberry Lemon Cake; Carrot Cake Everything; Black Forest Cake
Muffins: Good Morning Mini Muffins; Pumpkin Spice Muffins
Biscuits & Scones: Blueberry Scones; Cranberry Orange Biscotti
Crisps, Crumbles & Cobblers: Blueberry Cobbler
Quick Breads: Bagels; Cauliflower Pizza Crust; Cranberry Orange Spice Bread
Crackers & Snacks: "Cheesy" Puffs; Pesto Pinwheels; Plaintain Puffs
The biggest drawback to the cookbook is that it is limited in scope. The author uses expensive ingredients, such as cassava flour and tigernut, which might not be available or reasonably priced. The use of organic ingredients is plentiful, though readers can substitute pretty easily. I wish the author had given a reasonable substitute list for the pricier ingredients. On the positive side, I did learn a few things from this cookbook. Though I am familiar and have used AIP before, I have never come across the idea of using plantains instead of bananas. Each section of the cookbook does not have a lot of recipes, but there are many worth trying.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy by NetGalley and the publisher. The decision to read and review this cookbook is entirely my own.
This is an interesting read, particularly as a person who has an autoimmune condition.
There are definitely a selection of recipes that I want to try out, and the recipes in this book are nicely varied so there is going to be something for everyone.
My thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review.
Love this! I've had many different dietary restrictions throughout my life and I also have several family members who struggle with various conditions and it's always a challenge to find good baked goods that we can all eat! This is a wonderfully accessible cookbook with tons of recipes that all look delicious. I'm really looking forward to trying them out and using them at our next big family get-together.
Accessible and enjoyable baking book for those with autoimmune conditions. I enjoyed trying all of the recipes (especially the bagels). I also learned a bunch of techniques that are transferable to other recipes and help me in my general baking.
A great intro with plenty of solid knowledge about eating AIP. The pictures were great and recipes sound fabulous. Can’t wait to try the Coconut Cream Pie and Apple Butter Muffins! Thank you to NetGalley for a chance to read and review this book!
What a pleasant surprise!! Most AIP cookbooks either have delicious recipes or easy recipes but very rarely both. This one takes the cake (pun intended) and beautifully balances quality and ease. The pictures were many and beautiful. The recipes were simple and easily replicated without any “weird” or “exotic” ingredients. I’m really enjoying the party board craze going on right now. Many of these recipes could be easily put together to make an awesome AIP friendly party board of yummies.
Thank you, NetGalley!
Whether you have an autoimmune disorder or are trying AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) as a way to discover potential food allergies, this book is sure to alleviate sadness associated with the exclusion of your favourite baked goods. Washington-Hunt speaks in a straightforward (set your expectations) way while also being extremely positive and helpful on this journey of finding new tastes that provide us with comfort and joy. She describes necessary ingredients for an AIP pantry and what to avoid, and even makes herself available to answer questions you might have. The book contains lots of typical favourites as well as new flavour combinations that are sure to reignite your baking spark! Just make sure you weigh the flour. ;)
The Autoimmune Baking Book provides guidance and recipes for baking delicious treats without the use of refined sugar or gluten. The recipes are simple and delicious looking. Tiger Nut Flour is a common ingredient in many of the recipes. Tiger Nut flour is a healthy, and nut-free, flour…but it is expensive at approximately $14.00 per pound. I plan to substitute Quinoa flour for the Tiger Nut. #netgalley #TheAutoimmuneBakingBook
These recipes are really complicated and have very expensive ingredients. There's a note to follow instructions as written which makes me think there isn't a lot leeway for beginners which is disappointing. Folks with autoimmune disorder lives can be challenging, so cooking shouldn't be an added stressor imo.
Being a coeliac myself with multiple allergies to cater for in our family, I've read a lot of cook books in my time. This one is something different with new recipes & ideas that have honestly made me excited to go and try them out!
I'm so happy that I've had the chance to read and review this book ahead of its release and will definitely be purchasing a copy!
The Autoimmune Protocol Baking Book was a book I was really looking forward to reading. AIP (Auto-Immune Protocol) is an absolute need. I do have an autoimmune and I think these recipes are needed and on target.
BUT the photos could have been better. In the photos, everything looked dry and it affected my opinion about the book greatly. I think photos in a cookbook especially one where one thing flavor and moisture might be missing with alternative ingredients seem crucial.
I think the author's writing in the book is top-notch. Completely valuable information and recipes. Just better photos, please.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher Fair Winds Press for the opportunity to read and review The Autoimmune Protocol Baking Book.
Y'all, Wendi Washington-Hunt is right, when you are on an AIP (Auto-immune Protocol) diet, having a nice warm dessert or some fresh tasty cookies, is unheard of. It is amazing how fast we miss those sweets when we think we can't have them during this diet. But now, our wishes can come true! Wendi put together a cookbook full of cookies, bars, cakes, and muffins! There is some added in appetizers as well!!
I can guarantee you, that if you follow the AIP diet, you have the ingredients that are in these recipes. On top of being super simple recipes, Wendi breaks down the AIP diet for a clear understanding how this diet can immensely help those that would be benefit from this diet. As a person that requires this diet more often than not, this cookbook is a keeper and a must-have. The details Wendi goes into to help you learn of this diet is just as beneficial and helpful as learning these new recipes with new ingredients we may not be comfortable working with. YET. She will help you get comfy with that cassava flour and arrowroot!!
Thank you #NetGalley and #QuartoPublishing for sending me an ebook of #TheAutoimmuneProtocolBakingBook
The recipes in this cookbook are perfect for that extra push to continue this protocol while also knowing there is food out there that can help those sweet cravings!
I made a few for my Christmas baking and it was such a nice change to be able to enjoy some sweetness without a lot of pain!
