It took me a bit to finish this one, it didn’t grip me like I would have liked. It was also a bit predictable. The story itself was somewhat entertaining although it did take a bit to get into.
Normally I don’t care for detective thrillers and detectives POV, but it seemed like Dan was one of the only likeable characters.
Wasn’t amazing, but wasn’t horrible.
The lie in our marriage has it all. A killer plot made for keeping you up at night and tensing your shoulders.
On a warm spring evening, guests gather in a perfectly manicured garden to celebrate Maggie and Len’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Maggie leans against the apple tree, watching her fun-loving husband and darling children as her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river.
Slipping upstairs to find the special gift for her adoring husband, Maggie stumbles across something else hidden amongst the dusty boxes of family keepsakes…
A printed pink silky scarf that doesn’t belong to her. She holds it up to her face, breaths in the sweet sickly perfume, it’s scent familiar, and tendrils of fear snake through her body. The scarf is stained with blood.
Already from the get-go you’re invited into what you know will be a thrilling read. The paranoia is suffocating and it’s impossible to not be tainted by it. You’re engrossed whether you want to or not.
I liked Anna -Lou’s writing style. In the detective’s chapter were especially noteworthy. Packed with surprising and pleasing metaphors combined with my type of humor made it a pleasure to read. Dan would for sure get a confession out of me! I found myself chuckling from his way of thinking and talking, which is a rare occurrence in most thrillers.
If you like books that moves you, this might just be it. Maggie’s pain is described in a way that resonates with you. You can almost taste the desperation and dread after new terrifying discoveries. And then BAM! You’re hit by a car midway in the book, feeling shellshocked. You forgive the somewhat too perfect timing, because it makes you rethink what you suspected. And when all is revealed, you realize there were many hints sprinkled here and there . Even if it’s hard to imagine that something like this can happen in real life, it seems plausible since the motive makes sense.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lie in our marriage and has already bought the first book in the series.
Thank you to netgalley and bookatoure for the arc
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC that will be released January 18th 2023.
Maggie and Len are having their 25th wedding anniversary party. Maggie goes upstairs and finds a designer scarf that has dried blood splotches but leaves it there. Later on a dead girls nude body is pulled from the river. Detectives Dan Riley and Lucy Davis investigate the case. Assumptions are made and lives destroyed. There were many wild twists and turns. This was an awesome read and kept me flipping the pages. Can’t wait to read more books by this author!
Summaries can be found other places, so I'll tell you just what I thought about this book - good, bad and ugly.
It's so slow in the beginning that I came close to a DNF.. Not enough dialogue for me, way too much inner reflections.
Grammar, spelling, word flow errors normally annoy me but I did my very best to ignore them. There are a few things -- using the word 'causally' when I think they meant 'casually' is one example. Repeating a word in a sentence - 'She simply had to figure out how to live simply'. Not the exact sentence, but the word 'simply' is used that way. That happened a few times. There were also sentences as long and drawn-out as this one - no, even longer than this one, but I'm trying to make it as long as I can to give you an idea how annoying it is when that happens. I actually counted about 70 words in one sentence. I know, picky stuff, but it's distracting.
Anyway-- I KEPT READING.
When I got to one point (I can't tell you what happened, but I shouted NO WAY) Suddenly I was on a downhill slide and every chapter was exciting! Who can you trust? Who is lying? I did figure it out but it was so close to the end that I am not going to give myself a Win for it.
I love twists and I didn't expect some of these. Even with the things that I didn't like (noted above), I'm SO glad that I kept reading. This turned out to be one of the best books I've read this month. I'll look for this author again.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
'The Lie in our Marriage' by Anna-Lou Weatherley is a gripping psychological thriller full of twists and turns which has you gripped to the last page.
Maggie and Len celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Slipping upstairs to find the special gift for her husband, Maggie stumbles across a printed silky scarf that doesn't belong to her or anyone in her family. The scarf is stained with blood. At the same time, a body is pulled from a river. Maggie rejoins the party where she catches the news flash of a local girl's murder. She stares at the girl with a beautiful face, long blond hair and, draped loosely around her neck, Maggie recognises it instantly. She is wearing the scarf and Maggie immediately believes her husband Len is involved in the death of the young woman. Detective Dan Riley has to untangle these lies and get to the truth.
The story is told from Maggie and Detective Dan Riley's point of view. The characters were beautifully written and there were some emotional parts of the story where I couldn't help but empathise with the main character.
Although the book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone book.
I had my suspicions of who might have been involved in the murder but the twists were pretty unexpected and shocking. I enjoyed the flow of the book and I will be reading the other books by the author.
Thank you to Anna Lou-Weatherley and NetGalley for the arc of this book.
Maggie Wendover and her husband Len are celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary when they learn that a body has been pulled from a river. Apparently, the victim was strangled and dumped in the river.
Earlier while going through her stuff in their loft, she discovered a bloodstained Alexander McQueen scarf 🧣 in the eaves. Who did it belong to?
The victim is later identified as Amelie Fox whose body was discovered early on Saturday morning. Amelie Fox was a bikini model and social-media influencer who went missing two days earlier after her friends expressed concern that she failed to meet them for drinks and didn’t turn up to an important photoshoot.
Later on in the news, Maggie sees the photo of Amelie Fox for the first time. She’s wearing the exact same scarf she found earlier in her loft? Could it be the same scarf or is it just a coincidence?
Told from the povs of Maggie and DCI Dan Riley this is a compelling story with interesting characters. Full of twists and turns I never would have guessed the killer’s identity.
Thank you to Anna Lou-Weatherley, NetGalley and Bookouture for the arc of this book.
I really enjoy books from this author and this one was just brilliant as always. A great storyline with great characters, especially Maggie and Dan Riley, it was definitely a page turner for me and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
I hope to read more from this author in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this brilliant ACR which I have no hesitation in recommending.
I read this book quickly as it was so addictive. I loved Maggie one of the main characters and I could really resonate with her. The story had me gripped from the first chapter and I was desperate to see how it would turn out. Some
If the book was funny and I laughed out loud at a few quotes. I also loved that the book was so current with all social media platforms, only fans, current tv shows etc. the finale of the story and the twist in the tale was pretty shocking and I now see it was drop fed all through the book but you don’t see it. Brilliant author, brilliant story and I certainly didn’t put it down till I was finished. Thank you for a great thriller can’t wait to read your next book.
Another fantastic Dan Riley book!
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of this author's Detective Riley books and I was so pleased to get my request granted to read and review her latest offering.
The Lie in Our Marriage is an intricately woven story full of secrets and lies. I found it to be perfectly paced and it kept me intrigued throughout. Psychological thriller meets police procedural; this is one book that needs to be on your shelves. Although part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone book, but be warned, you'll want to go back to the very first one.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC of this book to read.
Expected publication date: 18/1/23
Thank you to #NetGalley, Bookouture and Anna Lou-Weatherley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of THE LIE IN OUR MARRIAGE to be published 18 January 2023. I found this combination domestic thriller-police procedural to be quite absorbing and engaging. The narration was from two points of view -the homicide detective and the married woman. or protagonist. The suspense kept me turning pages quickly to find out who did what to whom. I found Maggie to be very passionate and yet disturbed from her mother’s self-inflicted death when she had been only ten years of age. She carries that loss throughout her life and relationships, particularly with her family.and it confounds her. Readers who appreciate such a combination genre will likely enjoy this novel.
When you meet someone, you don't know them at all, but there is something that makes you want to get to know them better. You like what you see, they become your significant other and you start your life together. You are happy, have a family and years later you are still a couple/ You love them. You trust them, until that day...
You don't believe they are the same person you have shared so much with. But one big question though: did they really change or are you the one making the wrong conclusions?
When you do the maths and two and two equals 5, there is still a way to rectify everything. When you add two to two and your result suddenly is 731, you have a bigger problem and it's your responsability (or so you think anyway) to make the problem disappear... Then the solution suddenly presents itself. Even when in doubt, you have to act.. now!
You made the problem go away... right??? Even if your world has collapsed, you have saved others from being hurt, haven't you?
Well, ...
Oh Maggie, Maggie Maggie, you really saved the day or you really messed up. Which one was it? I had apparently more faith than she did ;). It never crossed my mind this person was to blame. I had someone else on my radar and for once it seems I saw through it all. :) Woohoo. LOL
So Dan Riley, if you are looking for nn assistant, you can always mail me. Hahaha ;)
I really enjoyed this book a lot that kept me on my toes. 5 stars
Thank you

I thought I knew what was going to happen but was in for a big surprise.
Will definitely be recommending this thriller.
Wow, what a page turner!
I’ve read other books by Anna Lou-Weatherley, but this is definitely the best. I was quickly drawn into the characters and the twists kept coming.
I was sure I had worked it all out about 3 times in the book but how wrong I was.
A fabulous domestic thriller and one that I’d definitely recommend.
I love this intense, climactic thriller. I was incredibly invested in the characters and plot. Readers are going to love this incredible novel.
I liked the writing and how the story didn’t stale at all, just kept pushing through and intrigued me with the diverse cast of characters their interactions.
I’ll read more books by the author in the future after reading this one.
This was a mysterious and intriguing tale. What does Angel's murder have to do with a married couple celebrating their twenty-five anniversary??
This was quite interesting with some good reveals and twists. A good thriller that romance lovers will enjoy (I'm not one of them).
The Lie in Our Marriage by Anna Lou-Weatherley was quite the gripping thriller and definitely with a twist or two. I really enjoyed reading this book. There were some eye-opening "oh gosh" moments and good curve balls to keep me guessing.
The Hersey's Kiss was an "awww" moment as well as sad.
I would recommend this book. A 4 out of 5 stars for me.

Another twisty, hard to put down read from Anna-Lou Weatherly. I have read all the books in this series and have loved them all. Now while this is billed as a series, all of them can easily be read as stand alone books. The recurring character of the detective is the thing that links them.
This time he is hunting down the killer of a beautiful, 22 year old Instagram model/influencer who has been found in a river. Everybody loved Angel, so why would anyone kill her. And what does this have to do with Maggie and Len, who are at the same time, celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary? Well you will have o read it to find out.
We hear the story from both Dan and Maggie, and get an understanding of what the police are looking at and what Maggie is thinking . There are, as always, plenty of secrets, lies and assumptions and it all leads to the thrilling ending.
Thanks again to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy to read. The Lie in Our Marriage is published January 18th.
Anna Lou-Weatherley has done it again with her newest suspense novel, The Lie in our Marriage. Get ready for a ride filled with unpredictable twists and many believable red herrings along the way. (Yes, I completely fell for a few of them.)
Maggie and Len are celebrating their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and by all accounts they are the perfect couple....until a beautiful young Instagram model is killed on the night of their party and an abundance of evidence points to Len. Maggie is faced with the impossible decision of going to the police with her discoveries or doing whatever it takes to protect her husband. Her choices result in a spiral of events that have serious consequences for everyone around her....and was the evidence that she found really what she believed it to be?
And as an added bonus Detective Dan Riley is back with his signature sense of humor and refusal to rest - or eat - until the truth is discovered. I LOVE him.
