I enjoyed this one! It was fun, easy read and it got me out of my reading slump! I loved Kitty's character and her chemistry with Matthew! Thank you for this ARC!
Another fun book in a great series. This one has Kitty and Matt being attacked by an old nemesis, and all during their wedding. Enjoyed this one, and this series. Highly recommend.
Another successful entry in the Miss Underhay Mystery series. I’ve read every entry, and Book 11 does not disappoint. This book continues the detective adventures of Kitty and Matt, all while they prepare for their wedding and still remain on guard from the overarching danger surrounding Kitty.
As usual, the mystery itself was well done. Not particularly difficult to uncover, but well-written and engaging. The cast of characters continues to be a strong suit. The pacing is quick and makes this a perfect short read. I really enjoyed the special gift from Matt at the end and look forward to their continuing adventures.
In this offering, I actually had times where I found Kitty less likable that in other books. Her attitude seemed off, and it became off-putting (getting angry because the dog had to go in her car, really?).
I also hope there’s a strong proof-read and round of editing, as there are some usage, grammar, and other general errors.
Overall, 3.75 stars rounded to 4.
The wedding bells are scheduled to ring for Kitty and Matt in mere days, but as the day draws closer they become a little sidetracked. Kitty's father is in town for the wedding and was invited to stay at Villa Lamora by a wealthy and worldly woman. But when she turns up dead--murdered in her bedroom--suspicion falls to Kitty's dad.
Kitty is determined to believe in her father's innocence. After all, it's not like he was the only one in the house. There is the help, the victim's sister, a young teen and her caregiver, the victim's investor, and her assistant. But who had motive?
The victim had been worth a lot of money. Could it be as simple as someone wanting to get their hands on it? As the crime is investigated, secrets and hidden agendas are revealed. When more lives are threatened, Kitty is even more determined to figure out the puzzle once and for all. But will that come too late? And will it jeopardize her upcoming nuptials? You'll need to read the book for yourself to find out.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
I have previously read a few of the books in the series and have quite enjoyed them. I love the setting of the book and Kitty Underhay is an inspired character. I am grateful to Bookouture, NetGalley and the author for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
In this new book, Kitty Underhay is on the verge of getting married, in the midst of wedding planning and is thrown into a mystery once again. What was supposed to be a pleasant evening, filled with fun and time spent with her father ends in the most unexpected way. This story is fun to read as Kitty and her fiancé Matt work together to find the murderer and save her father upon whom suspicion has fallen.
I like the author's style of writing and how she has shaped the characters involved in this book and series. Most of the books in the series can be read as standalone mysteries and enjoyed all the same. Kitty is a strong-willed woman who has a mind of her own and opinions on just about everything. However, the wonderful thing about her is that she knows just when to show it and when to stay silent and demure. Her relationship with Matt has developed over the series and I quite enjoyed reading about them and seeing how they have grown in this book.
The mystery is intriguing and with so many different characters in the mix, it proves to be an adventure for the reader as we follow the characters and the investigation. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading about more of Kitty's adventures and investigations. This book and series is for those who enjoy cozy mysteries, historical fiction with a splash of romance.
Will Kitty make it to her own wedding ?
Taking a well earned break from wedding planning Kitty goes to the ball where upon her father who is supposed to be walking her down the aisle is arrested for murder. Can Kitty help her fiance Matthew clear his name or will she be left to walk herself to meet Matthew on her wedding day
Highly enjoyable read
This series is my favourite of recent years. I fell in love with Kitty on her very first story and can only plead with the author to keep writing these please! Loved it!
Kitty Underhay, her fiancé Captain Matthew Bryant and her grandmother are attending a charity ball at the home of Lady Eliza Foxley. Kitty's father, Edgar, has come home to attend Kitty's wedding and after meeting Lady Eliza in the US and spending time with her on the ship over, he has been invited to stay with her instead of a local hotel. During the ball, Eliza disappears and Edgar finds her dead in her bedroom. There are several people staying at the house including Eliza's widowed sister, her niece and Tiny, the woman who was Eliza's governess/nanny and now helped with her niece. Of course with Edgar's history, he is one of the suspects in Eliza's murder. Matt has been asked by the police to help in the investigation, so of course, Kitty is going to help. There are more accidents and another death before they finally get to the bottom of it.
Murder at the Charity Ball is another great addition to the Miss Underhay series. Kitty has been busy with her wedding plans, so she was looking forward to taking a break and enjoying herself. Having her father home is stressful as he and her grandmother don't get along. When the murder occurs, the motive will help the police determine who the culprit is. There weren't a lot of clues, so it was important to see who would benefit from Eliza's death. With the wedding approaching, Matt's family arrived while the investigation was going on and it was interesting to see them all together. I will say, I did figure out who and why Eliza was killed about 2/3 of the way in, but kept reading to find out if I was right. This is a fast paced, light hearted mystery set in a fun period of time. I am really enjoying this series and look forward to seeing what is next for Kitty and Matt in their married life.
One of the enjoyable elements of a good series is more-than-one-book plotlines and this is the culmination of ten books in the making! It is the run-up to Kitty and Matt’s nuptials but before they can say “I do”, they find themselves in the midst of an investigation, and if Kitty doesn’t want to walk down the aisle without her father, she has to clear his name fast.
Whilst I found the resolution a tad implausible, it was a good journey and I look forward to seeing where to next for this dynamic duo! It’s a four out of five on the enJOYment scale.
In the run up to Kitty's marriage to Matthew Bryant they attend a charity ball, along with Kitty's father who is over in England for the wedding. Uh oh, there's soon a dead body at the ball, and Kitty's father is promptly arrested for murder. Needless to say, Kitty and Matthew are on the case to clear his name, find the real culprit, whilst all the time keeping an eye out for the vengeful Esther Hammett, one of the over-arching stories from this extended series of books.
As ever, Helena Dixon pulls off another fast-paced and wonderfully involving crime tale. Fans of the series will devour it, and will be waiting with baited breath to see if - finally - our sleuthsome couple will make it to the church on time.
(With thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this title.)
The story was a little slow in pace and it took me longer than usual to read the book. That being said I thought everything tied up nicely at the end with a few unexpected developments along the way.
I like historical cozy mysteries and in that regard this one did not disappoint. I also enjoyed the setting.
Unsurprisingly it's not going to be a smooth journey to the wedding! Once again, Kitty and her fiance have to figure out just what happened at the charity ball. I did figure out some of the plot, and some of the story elements felt a bit of a stretch in this one, but I really enjoyed seeing how the longer storyline unfolded. I'm looking forward to seeing where we go from here..
I am a fan of the series,, the author's writing style and the characters in this series, having read all of the books to date
It's a FOUR out of FIVE for me.
With thanks to #NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for my free advanced reader copy to review in exchange for an honest opinion
Finally the wedding of my year is imminent!
Kitty and Matthew are to marry in a few days time and has the blend of her family including her feckless father gather it is only a matter of time before there is a murder or two!
As usual great characters, clever plotting and a thrill a chapter.
It's the lead up of Christmas 1934, but more importantly... Kitty and Matt's wedding! Kitty's father Edgar has come over from New York and they reunite at a charity ball. Later that evening the host is found dead and Edgar is the main suspect for murder...
Murder at the Charity Ball is the 11th book in the cosy murder mystery series featuring Kitty Underhay and her private investigator beau Matthew Bryant. It can be read as a stand alone book but there are personal plotlines about their romance and her mother's death which have weaved through the series.
Kitty and Matt are looking forward to tying the knot. Lady Eliza Foxley struck up a friendship with Kitty's father on the boat from America and invited him to stay at her home. Now she is dead, strangled with one of her own stockings, and Edgar is discovered standing over the body. Kitty is convinced of her father's innocence but needs to persuade the police that other suspects had motive and opportunity.
There are plenty of twists as other characters are in danger and the police scramble to catch the killer. Meanwhile, Kitty is suspicious of her father's behaviour but doesn't believe it relates to murder. The peripheral characters in the series continue to add some light relief. Kitty's grandmother and her formidable friends Mrs Craven provide some gentle humour due to their old fashioned attitudes. Kitty is thoroughly modern with fresh ideas about gender and class for the 1930s.
Murder at the Charity Ball is an enjoyable addition to the series especially as we celebrate a wedding!
What a lovely and entertaining series this is, I cannot recommend it enough.
There is a wedding in the offing and our heroine Kitty Underhay is to at last be the bride; be given away by her father, which brings its own possibilities of disaster. Edgar Underhay is a guest with a local family and on a visit there one of the family is murdered, luckily Kitty and Matt are there to investigate as Edgar is suspected.
Sleuthing again the duo are set with more misfortune and their nemeses and murderer of Kitty’s mother may well be lurking near to upset proceedings.
Great cozy mystery crime, as usual good build up of the characters and a beautiful front cover. I love to hear the continuation of the story of the characters and look forward to book 12.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
It is 11th installment of Kitty Underhay adventures as a sleuth.. and now a bride-to-be. This time Kitty will have to find out who killed extravagant and daring Belle of the Ball and her fathers' love interest. Yes, we do get to meet Kitty's father, finally. And we get to see if he is an evil or a saint.
And how would Kitty go about solving the murder if she did not have her loyal friends around her. Her private detective fiancé will have Kitty's back as always...
Murder at the Charity Ball is an exciting continuation of cozy mystery series that has all the right ingredients to be a fun and a light read.
Murder at the Charity Ball by Helena Dixon is another of the delightful Miss Underhay series of mysteries featuring Captain Matthew Bryant as well. They are at a charity ball organized for the family by gram’s friend, Mrs. Craven. The family had been held up and did want to cancel. They made in it time for the ball, though, arriving on the same ship as had Kitty’s father, Edgar Underhay. It was actually lovely; Mrs. Craven had done an excellent job, until Matt and Kitty were called away. The hostess, Lady Eliza Foxley, had been found murdered in her bedchamber, strangled by her own stocking. Despite the fact of their wedding in just over a week, Matt and Kitty were called upon to help investigate, especially as Kitty’s father was one of the suspects.
I love this series. They are all so proper and yet, so warm. Kitty is a well-written character with more information given in each book. Her grandmother is a lovely old lady. Together they run the Dolphin Hotel in Dartmouth. Matt is retired from the war and the Home Office. He is another well-written character, riding his motorcycle about, having recovered from the death of his first wife and their baby in the bombings, he is ready to begin again. They are lovable characters, especially when teamed with Alice and Dolly, the chambermaids, and Inspector Greville, and a host of lessor characters. The plot was good. I was able to figure out who the murderer was before Kitty, did, but not by a whole lot. The personality of the setting just adds to the overall personality of the book. Give it a read.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Murder at the Charity Ball by Bookoutre, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #HelenaDixon #MurderAtTheCharityBall
Hard to believe we have already reached book 11 in the series.
This was a pretty good story, with a murder mystery unfortunately coinciding with Kitty and Matthew’s wedding.
There are lots of characters in this book which isn’t really a problem if you’ve read the previous stories but I can see how it could be confusing and hard to follow if you’ve not read a Miss Underhay mystery before.
A good story but not the best one in this series.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Book 11..... I can't believe I've read 11 books of this charming cozy.
Each book seems to get better.
In Book 11 we see our heroine, Kitty planning her wedding and finally making it to the church to marry Matt. We have a nice mystery and we see Inspector Grenville and Matt take on a more active role in investigating as Kitty is tied up with wedding plans. In the end, Kitty is instrumental in tying all the clues together.
What I love about this series.... it always ends well. Mysteries are fun Characters are engaging and are relatable. Even Mrs. C was charming in this book. lol.
I will refrain from talking about the plot of the book, the publisher does a better job than I could. If you love cozies, smart women and interesting story lines, please give this series a try.
Kitty and Matt are soon to be married, but whilst attending a charity ball the hostess is found dead; and Edgar, Kitty’s father, is the suspect. But Kitty must now prove her fathers innocence by delving into the late Lady Foxley’s personal life.
I found this a really fun novel, although the 11th in the series, was easy to follow. Dixon writes a multi-layered narrative allowing the reader to question different characters and enjoy finding out who committed the murder.
This is a novel I need to go back and read the rest of the series and one I know I will enjoy.
