Her Fixer-Upper is a fascinating book with plenty of humour and problems from the real world in the twenty-first century. There is also the issue of young people keen to go on the housing ladder but unable to afford the deposit to do so. Then there is the grandfather, who is healthy and vibrant but whose body is not as young as it once was. Numerous unanticipated problems are involved in fixing up a potentially fantastic property that requires more than tender loving care. And then there's the case of the enduring school friendship that, given the perfect conditions, might develop into something much more than just companionship.
This is the tale of Charlie and Freya, who were once classmates. As they begin their ascent up the property ladder and purchase their first home together, they have rules that include a prohibition against becoming entangled. Along the way, they learn about home restoration, including intricate damp proofing and plastering techniques. Additionally, they temporarily take care of Ted, Freya's grandfather's cheerful Border terrier, who 'helps' with the decorating by doing things like putting his ball in the paint to create distractions. During the process, unexpected catastrophes happen; this is not a smooth journey.
I normally love Emily Kerr's books, however this one was a little underwhelming for me. Parts of it were cute and funny but on the whole it was very predictable. From the moment Freya comes up with the plan to buy a house with Charlie and sets out with her rules I knew there would be the typical struggles of renovations intermingled with flirting, tension, the inevitable fight and misunderstanding, finalized by them realizing they had feelings for each other and the typical hea. I did give it 3 stars for the overall writing and the parts that I did find entertaining.
Set in Yorkshire, this is a story of childhood friends reconnecting, after having lost touch for many years, and deciding to buy a house together. The house in question, Oak Tree Cottage, is in a bit of a state, to put it mildly, but Freya and Charlie are both so desperate to get a foot on the property ladder that they are prepared to take the risk. The descriptions of the renovation are so realistic you feel like you need a bath just reading about it. They could not have realised exactly what they were taking on or they would have run a mile. The pitfalls and steep learning curve required are completely convincing.
While I enjoyed Her Fixer Upper, I do have reservations. Freya and Charlie are opposites in that she loves a spreadsheet and a list, and he is fairly relaxed and easy going. They are good for each other as he encourages her to be more spontaneous, and she makes him want to improve himself. As we only get the story from Freya’s point of view, we have no idea what Charlie is thinking or doing – neither does Freya – and this leads to serious misunderstandings that slow the pace of the narrative as they go on for a bit too long in my view. I found it harder to warm to Freya as she was such a control freak. The way he was written, Charlie seemed a bit immature at times, considering he ran a successful business, which is why I would have liked some idea of what he was thinking. The romance element is fairly low key and not really the main focus of the story.
I liked the setting in the Yorkshire countryside, and the supporting characters of Freya’s friend Leila, her grandad Arthur, and his dog Ted whose antics definitely stole the show. I had not read anything by Emily Kerr before, but now plan to catch up and read her previous books. Thanks to One More Chapter and NetGalley for a digital copy to review.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it is funny, heartwarming and entertaining. It is very well written and I loved the characters. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.
I absolutely adored this book! Light-hearted, funny, and nostalgic, it was the perfect feel-good read!
I loved that it got straight to the point. Things moved quickly and kept me reading to find out what happened next!
The friendship was adorable, and I was really able to identify with Freya!
The addition of Ted was just the icing on the cake for the characters.
I enjoyed exploring and imagining the cottage so much, it really was a gorgeous and perfect summer read.
This was a delightful story. Two school friends meet up again as adults. Both are struggling to get a motrgage to but their own property. They decide to buy a neglected property jointly, refurbish it then resell making a profit, so they can both buy their own property.. "The best laid plans!!" The storyn is very funny in parts and sad in others, but the conclusion was brilliant, I ended up in tears. Great, quick read!
It was a lovely read and I think many people would enjoy it and find it quite charming. I will definitely pick up other books by this author.
This was a lovely story and I really enjoyed it, The banter between the characters was amazing and really made me love them even more. Great story Highly recommend!
This was my first Emily Kerr book, and true confession--as an American, I particularly enjoyed the Britspeak throughout, lol! A highlight for me, for sure.
It was a pretty quick read, and I definitely literally LOLed at times. A few more colorful moments and language I personally could have done without (why I typically stick to inspy/ChristFic), but that aside, an enjoyable story.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This was a really enjoyable Read & it's main characters showed that real love is dependant on Trust , deep friendship & the ability to stick it out together through the Toughest of times as well as the good ! I really recommend this as a great Summer Read #NetGalley, #GoodReads, #FB, #Instagram, #Amazon.co.uk, #<img src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/8a5b541512e66ae64954bdaab137035a5b2a89d2" width="80" height="80" alt="200 Book Reviews" title="200 Book Reviews"/>, #<img src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/ef856e6ce35e6d2d729539aa1808a5fb4326a415" width="80" height="80" alt="Reviews Published" title="Reviews Published"/>, #<img src="https://www.netgalley.com/badge/aa60c7e77cc330186f26ea1f647542df8af8326a" width="80" height="80" alt="Professional Reader" title="Professional Reader"/>.
I enjoyed reading this one it was slightly different from others I’ve read and found it funny and interesting. Although the main characters were a little lacking in common sense at times but, that added to the charm of the book. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
I loved this book! Emily wrote it in such a way that you knew she just got these people!
Starting out in the world of house ownership is hard, especially in todays climate, this was so relatable and lovely in equal measure.
Old friends Freya and Charlie team up so they can get on the housing ladder but buying a house together as friends. But what will happen when feelings get involved? A great read.
Freya and Charlie are old school friends who bump into each other one night; both are looking to get onto the property ladder, but neither can afford a mortgage on their own. The pretend to be engaged and buy a rundown cottage as a fixer upper. Freya comes up with a set of rules to ensure that they do not become romantically involved - I think we all know the outcome of this book!
Thank you for my eARC of this book. I loved the premise of this and did enjoy it to begin with, it really struggled with the female main character, she just had 0 sense of humour and was far too serious for me to enjoy reading her. I get that she was the more serious of the 2, but I found her really frustrating to read. Unfortunately because of this I didn’t finish.
What can I say other than I loved it! It had everything you could want in a story humour, friendship, a Border terrier, named Ted and romance…
I ended up reading in one day.
Unable to afford their own homes, two friends decide to buy a renovation house together as a project. What could possibly go wrong…?
I will definitely read other books by this author.
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from One More Chapter and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Her Fixer Upper was perfect for me as I lay alongside the pool in glorious sunshine. It was a little predictable but a good read along the way.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I took a few chapters for me to really get into this book, but then I started to really like it.
A fantastic story. I loved the characters. Freya is a schoolteacher. She lives in a less than perfect house share and is struggling to save enough so she can own her own home. A chance meeting with Charlie who was an old school friend changes her life.
Charlie is trying to buy Oak Tree Cottage which is a very dilapidated old house that needs a lot of work. Charlie and Freya decide to work together and buy Oak Tree Cottage to fix up and sell for a profit.
A fun easy read with lots of humour. A romance about friendships, families, a cute dog and an old house. I loved it.
Nice little story about Charlie & Freya, who are unable to buy a property on their own, so decide to rekindle an old friendship and purchase a dilapidated little cottage together. Needless to say all does not run smoothly, really enjoyed following their journey
