⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 so so stars.
Not one of the author’s better books. One of the main problems was how unlikeable all the characters were - even the kids! So it was hard to gel with the story or root for anyone in particular.
When the twist came is wasn’t too surprising and the ending had everything tied up in a bow.
What a poignant read! Is there anything that we wouldn’t do for our children? My prayer for my daughter has always been that she grows up safe and away from the nightmares of this world. This was Rose had hoped for her daughter but her nightmare became a reality when her daughter, Bella, informed her that she had been assaulted. Naturally, Rose was devastated and wanted to do everything to ensure that her daughter was okay and received justice. An already bad situation was made worse by the fact that the accused is Cara’s son. Cara and Rose were best friends.
The story is narrated by the two mothers. It was hard to witness their struggles even as they searched for the truth and justice. Both wanted to protect their children but as it often happens, knowing exactly how to handle such a situation can be tricky and emotionally draining. I thought that the two women were quite sympathetic and their portrayal, realistic. I was invested in their story and all that was happening around them and their reactions to it all. Rose and Cara are two very well-developed protagonists and their characters aptly helped develop the themes of family, motherhood and friendships. They handled the sensitive themes of teenage drinking and sexual assault in a manner that is realistic and had me wondering how I would have handled the same issues as a parent.
This was quite a poignant, thought-provoking read that held my attention from the first to the last page. Kate Hewitt as usual handled such delicate themes tastefully and with the sensitivity that they deserved. All in all, this is an important, compelling read. Highly recommended.
I have mixed emotions about this one. It was a good book, just not what I was expecting. Not what I typically enjoy because of the emotional heaviness. And the repetitive hashing of events made me roll my eyes and sigh many times. I'm not sure if I would read another by this author or recommend this one as it just isn't in my wheelhouse. My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a galley of this book for review. All opinions are my own.
Love all of this versatile author's wonderful books. And this one - wow! Loved it from start to finish. Poignant. Just beautiful
I’ve read and loved other books by the author, historical fiction so wanted to see what her contemporary fiction was like. I was not disappointed. I found That Night at the Beach to be an incredibly sad book and tense at times as it deals with sexual assault through the he said / she said lens. It was an uncomfortable read at times but so well-written and engaging I had to keep returning to it. I liked the fact the author tackled such a difficult subject with sensitivity. This is worth a read.
EXCERPT: She still didn't move, and I was starting to get alarmed.
My first rather shaming thought was that she'd taken something. You hear horror stories about what kids get up to these days; it's not a casual joint at a party anymore, it's ket at a nightclub, snorting coke in someone's bathroom. Overdoses and addictions and kids dealing hard drugs in the locker room. The world is a crazy, scary place, especially for teens, even in a protected place like Westport, a haven of wealth and privilege.
My heart started to race as I put down the water and medicine and dropped to my knees in front of her. 'Bella . . . sweetie . . . what's happened? What did you -'
A single tear snaked down her cheek, silencing me, splintering my heart.
'Bella . . . whatever happened, it's going to be okay. I promise.' Of course, parents can't make those kinds of promises, and yet still we can't help ourselves. We will make our children's worlds safe. We will right every wrong. Whatever it takes. Whatever it takes.
ABOUT 'THAT NIGHT AT THE BEACH': As mothers we never dare to delve into our worst-nightmare scenarios. What if… we might murmur to each other, and then shake our heads, telling ourselves it’ll never happen to us if we’re just good enough mothers. Yet here we are. And the steady beep of the heart monitor is the only evidence the child in front of us is alive…
It’s Labor Day weekend, so of course we went to the beach. Like we do every year. For a barbecue picnic with my best friend Rose. It’s the perfect tradition—drinks, games, burgers, music, laughter. Together with our husbands, my two teenage sons and her two daughters, we all arrived as the sun was still shimmering over the water, the whole evening ahead of us.
But nothing goes to plan. Old secrets emerge, tempers flare. And so we parents decide to leave the beach, telling the teenagers to enjoy themselves, reassuring them someone will be back to collect them in an hour or two.
But when I return a little while later, I know something is really wrong. Our teens are slurring their words, stumbling to the car. It’s clear they have been drinking and I’m shocked. I never expected our kids to behave this way. I’m bracing myself to have firm words with them in the morning, but the next day my concerns fade to nothing, when seventeen-year-old Bella claims my son Finn assaulted her.
Finn insists he would never do that. And I so want to believe him. Because I brought my son up right. Because a mother would know, wouldn’t she?
What I don’t know is that the answer to what happened that night on the beach may be a matter of life and death for one of our beloved children…
MY THOUGHTS: Kate Hewitt really knows people: their relationships, their emotions, their thoughts, their fears. Her characters are us, our friends. The tragedies - something I hope we never have to face.
That Night on the Beach encompasses friendship, sexual assault, addiction, peer pressure, the pitfalls of social media, teenage drinking, and relationships both within marriage and between parents and their children.
This is a good read to go into cold, and I am disappointed that the book blurb gives away so much information, so I am going to say no more about the plot.
This is a serious read. There's not a lot of light and joy, but it is a riveting read and one with many important messages.

I’ve waffled over what to write in this review. I really think the less you know about the book, the better. Such a timely subject and something every parent should think about.
Two families that used to be close, have drifted apart but try to do their annual back to school barbecue. With dire consequences. The prologue has an unnamed Mom with her child in the hospital. All stemming from that night at the beach. I had forgotten what the description said when I got to the morning after the night at the beach. Not where I thought it was going.
There are multiple versions of the story and it takes on a life of its own. This would be a great book club book as there is so much to discuss. Which family did you believe? Who’s in the bed and which mother is with them? What happened to put them there? Did anyone go too far?
It’s a heartbreaking story that could have been ripped from the headlines.
Wow, just wow. What an emotional page turner. As a mother to both a daughter and a son, my heart was broken. Grab the tissues, you’re going to need them!
That Night at the Beach is an absolutely heartbreaking story of family, fractured friendships and regret.
To have one of your children accused of sexual assault would be horrific, but for the accuser to be your best friends daughter, I can't even begin to imagine the truth.
I'm not crying, you're crying....have the kleenex at the ready as you're going to need them, emotions run high throughout the story.
I did enjoy the book, but I found the ending a little disappointing, It felt rushed and cut short rather abruptly.
Many thanks to Bookouture for my tour spot.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'That Night At The Beach' by Kate Hewitt.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Kate Hewitt, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 19th January 2023.
This is the fifth book I have read by this author. I have also read 'My Daughter's Mistake', 'When We Were Innocent', 'The Child I Never Had' and 'The Wife's Promise' which I would highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'An absolutely heartbreaking story about friendship, parenting and betrayal. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Jojo Moyes and Susan Lewis.' I am a fan of Jodi Picoult and Jojo Moyes so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a HUGE fan of Kate Hewitt and if this is half as good as 'My Daughter's Mistake', 'When We Were Innocent', 'The Wife's Promise' and 'The Child I Never Had' it is bound to be an addictive read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 26 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in and England 🏴, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.I have actually holidayed in Cumbria so am intrigued to see if I recognise places based on anywhere I visited while there.
This book is written in first person perspective and the protagonists are Cara and Rose. The benefits of books written in first person perspective with multiple protagonists are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.
'That Night At The Beach' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Kate discusses/includes
WOW!!!! What can I say?!?! One thing I have got to say before getting into my review is clear your schedules and grab the tissues as you will need them!!!
This book is beautifully written with vivid descriptions setting the picture perfectly in the readers mind. The title, description and cover works perfectly with the storyline.
This book is devastatingly heartbreaking and beautiful. It is an absolute rollercoaster ride of emotions filled with heartbreak, anger, family, love, loss, secrets, friendship and so much more. It is one of the most thought provoking books I have ever read and I was questioning myself throughout this heartbreaking storyline. I questioned myself who I believed throughout going from believing Bella was telling the truth to that Finn was telling the truth. I really felt for both Cara and Rose being a mother myself this would be one of my worse nightmares. Kate's writing and descriptions are so evocative I really felt I was right next to both Cara and Rose throughout. Reading this book really does make you feel that you are standing with them and going through their pain, love, and suffering. While you are reading this you are going through a journey of love and loss, heartbreak, secrets, love, and anger and so, so much more. It really is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I was utterly glued to the pages and I could not bring myself to put it down. I was carrying my phone to read it in kindle every chance that I got. I was completely mind blown at the end. You need to clear your schedules and get the tissues at the ready because you will not be able to put this book down. There are some tough topics are explored with realism and sensitivity, that all culminated in a very gripping and powerful page turner. This is one of those books that will stay with me for a long time and although it could be a difficult read at times with emotions running high I would seriously recommend it to anyone and everyone!!
The characters are strong, realistic and I became completely invested in both Rose and Cara. I felt each of their pain, heartbreak, anger, sorrow and so much more My heart broke for each of them who went through so much change and more (but I can't say more as I don't want to spoil the storyline for anyone) . Although it was mainly through Jane and Alice's eyes that the story unfolds there are several many other characters that were affected by everything that was going on. I enjoyed getting an inside look into their family lives and relationships with their husbands, children, as well as sibling interactions, that added another layer to the story. Kate does an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story to life and the characters leap out of the pages as your turning them. It is so hard to say what I feel about the characters without giving anything away. I won't say anymore about the characters as I don't want to go into too much detail at the risk of spoiling it for other readers but yet again Kate has done another amazing job at bringing each of the characters to life. Well done Kate!!!
Congratulations Kate on yet another absolutely gorgeous, heartbreaking beautiful book!!! I am looking forward to reading more of your previous and future books. I would absolutely love to see this book turned into a movie!!! This is why you are on my favourite author list and here's to your next success 🥂
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and first two chapter in Kate's 'The Secrets We Keep' which is promising to be just as addictive as this book!
Overall an absolutely unputdownable, thought provoking, addictive and compelling devastatingly beautiful heartbreaking book!!!
Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Psychological Literary Fiction, Sagas, Mystery, General Fiction, Suspense, Literary Fiction, Women's Fiction, Contemporary Fiction, Psychological Fiction, Women's Sagas and Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Literary Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Fiona Valpy, Lucinda Riley, Barbara O’Neal. Susan Lewis, Jojo Moyes, Debbie Macomber, Amanda Prowse, Diane Chamberlain and anyone who loves a page turner.
398 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle or free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) and £8.99 in paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

What do I say about this book ? All I know is that I was absolutely numb after reading it. This was a roller coaster of emotions and as a mother of a teen myself this book and the characters all hit very close to home.
Cara, mother of Finn and Henry and Rose, mother of Belle and Elspeth have been best friends since they met at a mother's group. They have a tradition of meeting up for barbeque on Labour day weekend with their families for the last 15 years. But everything changes when they leave their teenage kids unattended that night at the beach.
The narrative alternates between Cara and Rose who are faced with an impossible dilemma, giving us a look inside their lives, their relationships with their husbands and kids. We also get to see the siblings' relationship with one another.
I loved Kate Hewitt's writing which is raw and honest as she delves deeper into some real and intense topics such as teenage drinking, impact of social media, sexual assault, lies and deceit. Just her emotionally driven prologue gave me all the feels and I knew that I was in for a compelling and heartbreaking read. The ending truly shocked me.
Highly recommend this impactful and thought provoking book especially for fans of Jodi Picoult .
Thank you for the review copy and having me on #bookontour @bookouture @netgalley and @katehewitt .
That Night at the Beach by Kate Hewitt is a tough read. Let me say first, I am a dyed-in-the-wool fan of Hewitt. I don’t really care for her modern books, I much prefer her historical ones. This was a good story but I hate the kind of books in which the characters spend most of the book thinking, or as I see it, wallowing. I prefer to have things happen. Keeping that comment in mind, we are looking at two families who have been “friends” forever. One has two daughters, the other, two sons. Traditionally they have gotten together at the beach for a picnic on the Friday of Labor Day weekend. It used to be such fun. None of them describe it that way any longer. It fell apart really quickly with one of the men stomping off the beach, drunk. Since he had had too much to drink, his wife offered to take him home and come back for the kids in an hour or so. The other parents were too drunk to drive, in her opinion. Well, one of the boys at brought beer, and one of the girls had brought a flask, and when mom got back, the older ones were passed out and the younger ones were “pouting,” separately, for lack of a better word.
This was a classic tale of miscommunication. The kids didn’t communicate well because they were scared: understandable. But the first to talk was the girl, to her mother. She had been sexually assaulted, not raped. Interesting the responses that got. The older son in the other family could not remember doing it. Was that the truth or a lie? Should they call the police? Then something got posted on Instagram. Who had done that? It got worse and worse. A marriage collapsed, another was on shaky ground. Kids were in turmoil, more kids than just the ones involved. It evolved into a huge mess, as things like this often do. Interesting. Frightening.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of That Night at the Beach by Bookoutre, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #KateHewitt #ThatNightAtTheBeach
Everyone should judge a Kate Hewitt book for themselves. I don’t read reviews because many of them contain spoilers and I’d always much rather go into a book without knowing what happens. That Night at the Beach is no different. You’ll be drawn in so much more if you do not know what is coming next....and I guarantee, you probably won’t have a clue what is coming next.
Full of anger, emotions, and teenage (and adult) hormones. That Night at the Beach will send you on a whirlwind of your own emotions as you try to comprehend what Rose, Cara, Finn, Henry, Bella and Elspeth are dealing with. Both families have been friends for years, but something happens ‘That Night at the Beach’ that changes everything for everyone - forever.
If you love Kate Hewitt, then go out and buy yourself a copy of her latest book. If this is your first time reading one, why not start with this one?
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of That Night at the Beach by Kate Hewitt.
BOOK TOUR!! I just finished That Night at the beach by Kate Hewitt and here are my thoughts.
Two families torn apart by one night at the beach. The adults have been drifting apart for years but they still have a BBQ at the beach every labor day weekend. After the husbands have another clash, they all decide to go home and come back for the teens in a couple of hours.
When Cara returns to pick everyone up, something is wrong. When she finally finds them they are all drunk and the mood is subdued. Nothing could have prepared Cara for the next morning.,,,
Rose is furious. Her daughter Bella claims Cara’s son Finn assaulted her. Finn vehemently denies it all. Cara doesn’t believe it and the fracture friendship between the 2 women widens as they both search for what really happened that night….
Mother’s worst nightmares right here. To have a daughter who says she has been assaulted and a son saying he didn’t do it. I wouldn’t want to be on either side of this coin. These two women couldn’t be more different or have more different parenting styles but both have the same concerns and fears internally. I found the book super easy to connect with and the fact it was a thriller too really made it more intense for me.
The pace was really well set and sped up in all the right places. The book comes from both mothers POV and it helped to round the book out to understand the two perspectives. I felt super invested in the outcome and while I did figure it out pretty soon into the book, it didn’t spoil anything for me at all. It was really well done with exceptionally genius writing. Hard topic to cover and the author did it with such class and gravitas which I was really grateful for.
Triggers: attempted suicide and assault.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I give it a solid 4 stars! If you love Jodi picoult books, then this one's for you!
Thank you to @bookouture and @netgally for my review copy
One night that will change two families forever.
What a gripping, heartbreaking, emotional and thought provoking read! Whew! This book had me feeling all kinds of emotions.
Every Labor Day weekend, best friends, Rose and Cara and their families get together. They BBQ, play games, drink, reminisce, and share laughs. But this year, there is tension, and the adults decide to call it a day, leaving their teenagers behind for a few hours to enjoy themselves.
When they are picked up by Cara, they are not the happy go lucky teenagers they were when their parents left them behind. They have been drinking and something is off with all of them. The next morning Rose goes to Cara's home and informs her that Cara's son Finn had assaulted her daughter, Bella the night before and they would be involving the police.
Whew!
Finn says he never assaulted Bella and Bella is firm that he did. Two mothers- one who believes her child and the other, hoping the allegation is not true. This book became an emotional and hard to put down book. I felt for both mothers. Both wanted to protect their child. Both wanted answers. I wanted answers. I felt for the teens involved as well.
This one pulled on my heartstrings and had me on the edge of my seat. What a powerful book that had me wondering how I would react if I were the parent of either of these teens. There is tension flowing throughout this book. I felt for everyone involved. This book covers many hot topics: drinking, social media, and sexual assault to name a few.
Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. This was my first book by Kate Hewitt, and I look forward to reading more of her book.
Gripping, powerful, thought provoking and emotional.
Thought provoking
This book was so very hard to put down; I read it in a day. It explores motherhood and what a mother can do for her children when their choices are questionable. Highly recommended!
Thank you to the publisher who lent me a time-constrained e-arc via Netgalley. This review is optional and my own opinion. I am trying to get this author's books in my library, they are all very good!
Oh, My! Kate Hewitt has done it again! She wrote a story that makes you hold your breath to see what will happen next. Then she surprises you where she takes it. Just when you think you know what you believe, she makes you question your perspective.
Switching between Rose's and Cara's point of view often left me at a pivotal point I couldn't wait to get back to. It made me wish I could read faster. These two strong women show you two perspectives that will have you wanting to support both of them.
This is one of the best of Kate Hewitt's books.
That Night at the Beach is a standalone novel written by Kate Hewitt. It will be published on January 24th, 2023 by Bookouture. I was able to access this ARC by Bookouture as being a member of their review team and was given instant access on NetGalley.
The novel is about Cara and Rose, two mothers who are best friends, whose friendship and lives are changed forever after a single night at the beach.
Cara is a mother to two sons, Finn and Henry, while Rose has two daughters, Bella and Elspeth. They have been friends for many years, and their families has a tradition to spend the day together at a nearby beach in the final weekend of the summer before the school year starts. Due to other obligations, issues, and fights, all the adults leave early and the kids stay behind hanging out at beach longer until Cara picks them up later in the night to take them all home.
Their lives are upheaved the next day when Bella confides to Rose that Finn sexually assaulted her after the adults left at the beach. Finn denies everything to Cara, but matters are made worse when the information is leaked and Bella goes to the police to report the crime.
While Bookouture advertised the novel as women’s fiction, and I can agree with that, I think it could also be appropriately advertised as a psychological thriller to some extent. We switch between the points of view of Cara and Rose, and we see how the issues affects even them as mothers, to the point where their mental health begins to suffer as they doubt every decision they ever made over the years.
I have not done a book tour post before, and I am honored that this captivating book was the first one. I rate this book as 5/5 stars, and I would recommend it for all types of fans, such as for women’s fiction, crime, mothers, and readers that enjoy a story that truly shows the qualities and personality of characters across the pages.
Crikey, what an emotional tale That Night at the Beach is. Told by two women who met at a mother and baby group and have been best friends ever since, the two families had to the beach during Labor day weekend. Cara, mum of Finn and Henry married to Michael, and Rose who is married to Brad and is Bella and Elspeths mum get their families together for a BBQ for their annual event. Things don't go down very well, and Michael storms off. The parents decide to leave the teenagers at the beach for an hour or so and had back to their own homes. The story explores the relationships between parents and children as well as each other. What transpires is heartbreaking and will resonate with many people.
Cara and Rose could not be any different as mothers. However, this latest book by Kate Hewitt is not about either of them. In fact, it is about their children, and an accusation that Rose’s daughter Bella claims about Cara’s son Finn. Bella’s claim is one that is very serious and very devastating. What happened and what were the circumstances that led to this claim?
It is the end of summer and a yearly cookout at the beach is one that neither family will ever forget. Cara and Rose have been close friends for years. Best friends, in fact. Cara has two sons and Rose has two daughters, and all of the children have grown up together and had been close for the most part. Any distance that the children had developed over the years went mostly unnoticed by their mothers, but the last thing either set of parents would ever expect was the possibility of what Bella says happened at the night of the cookout.
After a blowup between their husbands, both sets of parents headed home with Cara promising Rose that she would go back in about an hour and pick up all four of the children. They were not concerned that the four teens being unsupervised would be problematic in any way. Once Cara returned to pick up the children, none of them were with each other, but she did manage to find all four and dropped Rose’s two daughters off at their home before returning to her home with her sons. The next morning, Rose comes banging on Cara’s door quite upset that Bella told her that the previous night Finn had attacked her. Rose is determined that Finn will pay for the crime of attacking Bella, and that they would definitely be pressing charges on him for sexual assault.
Quite naturally, Cara goes to speak to her son, and he denies that anything like that happened between him and Bella. With both teenagers claiming that they are being 100% honest, both Cara and Rose immediately strive to get to the bottom of whatever happened that night. Any mother would do the same. Of course, Cara wants Finn to take responsibility for the assault, but first she must determine whether or not she is able to believe him when he says that he did not harm Bella in any way. The problem is that it was determined that both of the teenagers were drinking that night and that alcohol has made at least one of them unsure as to what happened at the beach after the cookout.
What a serious read this book was! The subjects were powerful. Teenagers drinking, sexual assault, the impact of social media, lies as well as secrets, and how friendships could easily be destroyed. This dramatic read went past the serious subjects being discussed when it came to the surprises that took place in this story. This led to quite a a shocking ending thus making That Night at the Beach a truly compelling read.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
