** Here is the review I posted on Goodreads '" - I’m not a native speaker 😊 **
Thanks to #Netgalley for offering me the chance to read a free copy of this book.
With Kill Your Darlings, we follow a YA Fantasy author who finds herself stuck in the world she created, in the body of her main character nonetheless… minus her magical abilities. Will she be enough to win the war that rages and destroy the mighty villain?
What surprised me the most about KYD it's that this book is so much more than your usual fantasy tale. There are opposing factions, fantastic creatures, magic… but this story is also about “the author” and her inner struggles, which gives it an unexpected extra layer.
L.E. Harper’s writing style is fluid, modern, and easy to read. Although, it sometimes surprised me, as I expected her characters to speak in a “more elaborate” or “old-fashioned” way.
That said, I quickly felt a connexion with the main character which made me even more curious about how the story would unfold and I guess it could be the case for a lot of readers. From the references she uses to her self-consciousness or the way she interacts with the world surrounding her, there were so many little - and not-so-little things - that reminded me of myself or people I know.
If you usually go for complex world-building, KYD may leave you a bit unsatisfied. There are a lot of compelling details about its world's landscapes, culture, and history (kudos for the inclusivity <3) but the tale only scratches its surface. Now, I'm not sure that more information would have truly served the story. Maybe I'm just hungry for more 😊
I’ll definitely keep that author on my watchlist!
I got into the story pretty quickly and enjoyed it throughout! I loved getting to know the characters and it was great to see how the relationships changed within the story.
YA fantasy author trapped in her own story (which supposed to have devastating ending too).
It was a little hard to get into because this book had a different perspective than other fantasy books, but once I got into it, it was a lot of fun! It was a curious thing, how author's mind worked, and I love that we get to read a glimpse of it through this book. I also like how this book has an asexual heroine, and although there were romance subplot but I think this book is clean and offered new way of perceiving things. I love the whole gang of Kyla, Valen, Asher, Rexa, and Cendrion!
