My Reaction: I enjoyed this collection of poems. It is great for its intended audience!
I received a complimentary electronic copy of You Need More Than Dreams by Tolú A. A.Akinyemi from NetGalley.
What I found to be engaging most about this collection of poetry is that each poem is written with its intended audience/demographic in mind: youth and teenagers. It is an instructive style of poetry that essentially is a call to action and a way to help kids and teens navigate personal and social issues that they are faced with daily. His style has been described also as didactic and I think that the term describes well his manner of writing and connection to his audience.
I most enjoyed the poem, "Social Media" as it is a warning that kids take heed to the pressures of social media platforms. That they always remember that their worth extends beyond what they see and have been shown online.
It makes sense putting "The Outsiders" vibes plus Social Movements into his poetry book. That's words that reminder me my teenage days in my neighborhood, lifestyle, insecurities, and how much need know what if there's good and normal insecurities to my entire life before my twenties. Like mental health, poverty, watching the white supremacist used to work against qpoc communities.
I liked it every poem.
