It was lovely catching up with Alice and Bethany together with all the other characters. It was a real page turner and had me hooked from the beginning . I enjoyed following how the relationship between Bethany and Jos unfolded to their happy ending despite the goings on with others trying to kill Alice. It was a very well written book. A new author to me but I shall be looking for her other titles as she is such a good story teller.
This book gave me a lot of mysterious like old gothic vibes in a way when she went to this house.
I liked bethany as a character a lot.
The story was slow moving but it picked up in the middle and end.
It was a good historical fiction book. A lot of mystery. Thank you for giving me this ARC copy these opinions are 100 percent mine.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Bethany used to be a teacher in a primary school in 1944, that was until the school was hit by a bomb.
So now she’s looking for work and applies to be a companion, for a lady, who lives in one of the houses in the grounds of Summerhayes.
The buildings, although look lovely, at one time were regal and the grounds were alive with trees in bloom, now are in need of repair.
The old lady for whom Bethany has applied to be a companion for, Alice, only has two rooms to live in.
As the war is still ongoing, the Military has taken residence in other parts of the buildings.
Bethany and Alice have become friends, but then things change, Alice begins to get letters from her daughter, who she’s not seen for a long time.
Every time the letters arrive, Alice starts taking of the past and in doing so, Bethany finds it hard to make her think of what is happening now instead.
But, the letters Alice is receiving, are they really from her daughter? Or is someone else behind them?
The story was very well written and I enjoyed reading about the adventure Bethany had with Alice.
I recommend this book.
Such gorgeous covers….2nd book in this wartime series. This book is a beautifully written and emotional romance. Its historical setting and fresh, contemporary style will appeal to both historical fiction and romance readers. Definitely recommend!
This is a companion book to The Girl From Summerhayes by the same author. This one is set as WWII is coming to a close and is also set and Summerhayes, as was the other book. You could read this alone or first, but it makes more sense to read them in chronological order. This book centers on the same family, with the fates of some key characters from the other book revealed. Our main character, Beth, comes to be a companion to one of the characters from the first book, which was et in WWI. She quickly gets drawn into the lingering family drama, the soldiers billeted nearby, and the course of the war itself. As with the other book, this was well-written and provided interesting insight into the home front during war. As with the first, though, some sort seem to drag, and some relationships seem to develop oddly quickly.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
