Historical fiction about a widowed school teacher who becomes involved in an effort to find a widower a mother for his young twin sons. I really liked that the potential "villains" in the story weren't villains, they were just a couple that was struggling with their own losses, and regained their faith and happiness at the end.
The Tapestry of Grace is an inspiring, thought-provoking story of family, community, and faith. The characters are engaging and relatable. The three major characters Augusta, Martina, and Konrad each have their own story. These stories intertwine seamlessly and beautifully leading to a satisfying ending. Set in a small Kansas Mennonite community in 1895 the rather unique plot flows smoothly and keeps you invested from start to finish. As in all of Ms. Sawyer’s works that I have read, the faith thread is strong. This one illustrates how God works in everyday life to bring all things together for good for those who love and trust him. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it especially for fans of inspirational historical romance.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was incredible. I was drawn into this story from the beginning and I didn't want to put it down.
The characters were relatable, and the kind of people I wish I knew in real life.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Loved the historical aspect of the story. Reading different character's viewpoints made the story more personal. This is a sweet story of faith and friendship but predictable. Enjoyable!
I truly enjoyed The Tapestry of Grace. It was a sweet book filled with love, heartbreak and forgiveness.
I reviewed this book for the May issue of Historical Novels Review, the magazine of The Historical Novel Society. Per their policy, I cannot post the review until after it is published on their website on May 1st. I will update the review then.
Augusta Dyck is a widow raising a daughter alone. She is content to teach school, but when the summer break comes around, she joins a group of ladies that is determined to help widows and orphans.
Konrad lost his wife and is trying to raise his twin boys. He finds it difficult during the summer, as he needs to work and cannot keep an eye on them. After he himself having an accident as a boy, leaving him scarred, he seeks Augusta's help in finding a wife and mother for his boys.
The story was pleasant to read, a bit drawn out, but it kept my interest. Great character development, with lots of lessons that are learned along the way. Definitely a faith based story, with old world values. Kim Vogel Sawyer is an excellent writer as testament to her other works. She weaves faith throughout as her characters find hope in their reliance of God.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Alexandertol, Kansas 1895
A Tapestry of Grace does not disappoint as I expected a slow but thoughtful story from Kim Vogel Sawyer.
Martina Krahn starts a Frauenverien, a society that is dedicated to helping widows and orphans, and schoolteacher, Augusta Dyck, believes that she knows who should first receive help from the benevolent society, Konrad Rempel, a reserved widower with twin sons, Walden and Folker.
They thought they knew what they wanted and desired but they found that only God really knew through situations beyond their control that He was fulfilling their true desires through only what could be described as His grace. Very enjoyable.
My gratitude to Netgalley and Waterbrook and Multnomah. All opinions expressed are mine.
I found this book to be heartwarming and faith-filled, which I really enjoyed. The messages really were worthwhile and touching. Family, including the one you’re born with, the one you’re given, and the one you find later, really do shine in this novel. However, I found the writing to be a little stilted, the story a little slow, and the miscommunication unnecessary. Overall, I can see why others would really connect to this story, but I didn’t love it.
Augusta Dyck is a widow raising her daughter Juliana alone. A group of women start a Frauenverein a benevolent society. When they ask did anyone they know need help Augusta gives the name of Kondrad Rempel and his two sons. As the group tries to figure how they can help it brings Konrad and Augusta together, It is a beautiful story that draws you into the book from the beginning to the end. It's about love and new starts in life. Kim Vogel Sawyer is a great writer and it shows in this book. You will fall in love with the characters.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This is my first book by Kim Vogel Sawyer, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It describes a community of Mennonites in Kansas in 1895. Their German heritage and faith is palpable throughout the whole story, which made me feel right at home since I grew up in Germany.
The story follows mainly three people. One is a widowed teacher who raises her only daughter alone. The second is a widower with twin sons, who is struggling to both keep and eye on the boys and support them by working as a blacksmith. There is also a married middle-age lady who struggles with not having any children and a husband who seems to have given up on love and life.
All three have had their share of heartaches and difficulties and yet through faith and friendship they start seeing how God direct their steps in ways they never dreamed of and brings the much needed comfort and love in their lives.
The book is laced with little nuggets of God's Word and show how simple people lived their faith even in difficult circumstances. Sure, they stumble and struggle, but in the end decide to trust.
I really loved how the author told the story from different perspectives of the main characters, which made the story really personal. The plot is quite unique and although the reader can quite early feel where the resolution is headed, there are many places where the story ebbs and flows and keeps the tension.
I received a copy from the publisher through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Although it may have taken me awhile to read-a slow reader due to life. I really enjoyed this book by Kim Vogel Sawyer. I have indeed enjoyed every book I have read of hers! Augusta is a widowed school teacher with a daughter named Juliana. She enjoys teaching the kids in the school and teaching her daughter to grow and mature into a godly lady. She joins the organization Frauenverein and is determined to help widows who are trying to get married and plans on helping Konrad. He has twin boys who are a handful and he is trying to work in his blacksmith business, but struggles to work with them and keep them out of trouble. Augusta determines to help him by advertising for him to find him a wife. Martina is a married woman who can't seem to have any children. They have tried, but she looses them every time. It is a hardship in their marriage. She will do what she can do to try and get a child. Her husband is a mess drinking to deal with the stress of not being able to provide a child for him and his wife. I won't reveal anything else of the story. It is a great read!.
When a group of Kansas women start a Frauenverein, a benevolent society devoted to aiding widows and orphans, life changes for more than just the hurting people they seek to help in this heartwarming romance inspired by historical events--from the bestselling author of Freedom's Song.
Wow. This is a new to me Author, and I will definitely be looking up more of her books. What a story.
There was a Bible Verse at the start of this book:-
'Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.' Hebrews 4 v 16
This set the tone for the whole book. At first, I must admit, I didn't like Martina, I felt she had the wrong motives for suggesting what she did, but, as the story goes on, and you understand more of what is going on with her, then I grew to like her. This story is set around a community coming together to help each other. Families then, as now, have the same basic needs and hardships as we all have today. I really got invested in the characters and their lives. I love stories set around a village or community and family sagas. I consider this book both of those. I must admit, I did guess some of the outcomes but it didn't take the enjoyment out of the story for me at all. I couldn't put this book down tbh, the way it was written, from several viewpoints, really drew me in. I had to keep reading to see if my suspicians were right. I loved the way that the Author put God in the centre of everyday lives, as it should be. This book spoke to me in so many ways. I'd encourage everyone to read this.
I received a free copy of the ebook from Netgalley. The opinions are my own.
An enjoyable read set in a small Mennonite community in 1895, Kansas. The newly formed women's group at the church sets off a ripple of change and unexpected blessings in people's lives.
"If at all possible...live peaceably with all men."
This author always does a great job writing a story that pulls me in and leaves the feeling of having learned a spiritual truth through the characters' situations. The women disagree, but their love for others and their faith overrides any division. A second chance at love and the importance of family are threads in their "tapestry of grace".
I loved the rambunctious little boys and also the tender relationship between Juliana and her mom. The moments of heartfelt prayers and seeking the Lord's will for direction was inspiring. The resolution at the end was definitely worth the wait.
Recommend to readers from teens and up who enjoy Christian historical reads with a bit of tender romance. 4.5 stars
A Tapestry of Grace by the talented author Kim Vogel Sawyer is a Christian historical novel. It is set in a Mennonite Kansas community. I was immediately invested in this beautiful story and its characters.
We meet Augusta, Martina and Konrad, all major characters in this captivating book. They all live in the quaint community along with many other secondary characters. The women of the town decide to start a society to help those in need. There is much discussion and division about this.
Augusta, a widow, is the primary school teacher. She has one daughter. Konrad, a widower, has twin eight-year-old boys. Martina and her husband Gerhard are an older childless couple. All of the characters’ lives become intermingled in a page turning way.
This is an inspiring story. Once I started reading it, I had trouble stopping. The characters are realistic and very relatable. All of the different stories were fascinating and meshed into one magnificent novel. The writing is so well done that I felt swept away to a time and place far away. This author has an extraordinary way with words and storytelling. I love how faith is woven into her story.
I highly recommend this to everyone! It is a story that will captivate you with its twists and turns. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy from was provided by the publisher through Netgalley. All opinions are my own honest ones.
This book has certainly been a pleasure to read. I felt blessed to receive it.
I love anything this author writes. She never fails to disappoint me.
I just love Martina! She's so so much like me. A people pleaser and a worry wart!
But, you gotta love her. Her heart is in the right place.
Yes, this book made me want to cry and I did giggle at some of it too.
Augusta is another character that won't let you forget her anytime soon either.
The Lord knows what He's doing He has a plan for each one of us.
I believe He puts us in the right place at the right time. Exactly where we're supposed to be.
My favorite thing is when the author uses the Biblical messages and plops them down right where they're supposed to fitting each scene perfectly.
This novel is one of my all time favorites penned by one of my all time favorite authors. I cannot think of one of her books that I have not simply loved.
The story of the group of women in Kansas who start a benevolent society dedicated to helping orphans and widows is heartwarming and extremely interesting. I loved meeting each of the characters within the pages of this book, they each have a reason for helping their community and one of the ladies I didn’t care for at first, won me over after getting more of her story.
From the very beginning, I knew Augusta was going to be memorable and she certainly is since I’ve thought about her long after I finished reading the book. This beautifully crafted story will appeal to readers of Historical and Christian fiction and those who love a story you where you will become fully immersed.

The Tapestry of Grace by Kim Vogel Sawyer
Augusta, Martina and Konrad all live in a small Mennonite community in Kansas.
Konrad is a widower with two eight-year-old twin boys, Walden and Folker and he is ready to remarry he asks the primary school teacher and old family friend, Augusta, to help him find a wife or helpmeet. With much prayer and humility Augusta takes on the task.
Martina and Gerhard are an older childless couple. Martina feels like she has let her husband down by not giving him any children, she encourages Gerhard to hire young Walden as an apprentice for his wagon making business during the summer school holidays, to help Konrad out so that he can get work done without the boys getting underfoot and selfishly to have a child close by hoping that in the future they would be able to keep him as their own but God’s ways are not our ways and God has a perfect plan for Augusta, Martina and Konrad.
To me this wonderful book is based on one of my favourite bible verses; Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desire of your heart.” As all three Characters hearts are drawn closer to the Lord God meets their greatest desire and needs.
Thank you, Kim, for a truly touching read. I Loved this book!!!
