I didn't expect the rhyme scheme to be solid, but it actually reads smoothly and jauntily. It's a fun, educational text with informative back matter that covers the importance of animals' endangerment and the potential for species recovery. Bonus points for the suggested reading list and the glossary. I read this on Kindle and may have missed out on some of the illustrative matter so can't say anything about that aspect of the book.
A book that provides the reader a chance to step into the skin of various animals by the usage of mask poetry and to get to know them better.
As a result of this presentation I chose to test my husband by using it where I read the mask poem to him and made him guess on the animal even if it wasn't the specific individual animal species that was named. He did fairly decent until he fell asleep in the telling of the elephant poem so I chose to just finish-up without him.
Champion Chompers, Super Stinkers starts off and ends with a poem that invites the animals to come to a competition to see who is the best at what and then wraps up by confirming that basically all animals are special in their own way. The rest of the book is a dedicated two-page spread for each animal with the poem on the left side and then the revealing of the animal's record on the top of the right page before going into a paragraph giving more information about how the animal reached the record. Although the book does a great job of including different font sizes, word effects and onomatopoeia to add to the charm of the poems the rest of the poem telling was mediocre at best with some that rhymed, most that kind of did and very flow.
In the end it was a pretty decent book and although it did give me insight into some new animals that I hadn't heard of before most of them were actually rather old news to me. Although I also do want to point that the oldest animal record was incorrectly given since there are much longer lived animals than what was named in here particularly the Greenland Shark.
The illustrations were also rather so-so for me with some of the animals looking particular more cartoonish than others such as what is going on with the beaver's incisors ?
And finally the last few pages of the book give some more infomation on the usage of mask poetry, protecting the animals and of course trying to explain how we measure animals for these records. Fairly decent but not much newsworthy at least for me.
In the end it was a pretty decent book and one that children may enjoy if they haven't had a chance to explore too much of these animal species beforehand. As I did you can use it as a bit of a playful interactive with your young readers, though, if they are animal fans just to see if they may get a few of the records right or just have them read it cover-to-cover.
**I received a free copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**
I loved it! Not only did my children love it (4 year old and 6 year old) I also really enjoyed the book! The illustrations were beautiful and the cover really draws you in. The poems were smart and well written and I really enjoyed the little paragraphs that explained more information about the animal. This is the perfect book to gift to anyone with kiddos. 10/10 going in our collection.
This is too much fun! It has many elements, without seeming hectic.
-the mvp of each category “most stinky” “biggest nest builders” etc
-poems that rhyme and make each animal’s facts more fun to listen to
-facts about each animal
-beautiful illustrations
-different fonts that pop off the page
I also really enjoy how they have half the animal of the first page with the poem. I know if I were to have a copy of this book to read to my class, my young students would love being able to guess which animal is being written about. Before it is revealed on the next page with the full illustrations and fun facts.
I learned quite a bit of new information! A fabulous and fun read!
I highly recommend buying this book for your older elementary age kids! Not only is it fun with the rhymes but also have a lot of information about the different animals!
Super cute book with adorable illustrations! Loved all the information and the artwork was really well done. Highly recommend this book!
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
LOVED the nonfiction in this book. Also enjoyed the mask poems for each creature included. The personalities assigned to each creature ensured the reader understood the positives and negatives of each animal included.
The illustrations were done beautifully, the poems written in fonts that accentuated the right words at the right times, and just all around great vivid vocabulary used for readers as they follow along.
At the end of the book is a little more information about endangered animals as well as some ELA information for parents and educators that choose to utilize this book in studies of creatures and all.
Overall, would highly recommend to add to a home library or school library when a child chooses to follow down the path of who is the most XYZ.
Thank you for allowing me to review the story!
This is am amazing book! It's a great way to introduce or reinforce poetry with students while also learning important facts about animals. The animals aren't necessarily familiar to readers so it definitely expands the knowledge base of the reader. The animal clues and snippet of the animal keeps you guessing!
A mask poem is written from the point of view of an object, an animal, or a person who is NOT you. There are no rules as far as meter or rhyme pattern. Linda Ashman has selected interesting and extraordinary animals to reveal their feelings.
The reader knows exactly how the object feels.
This book of poetry is fun! Eloquently executed.
This was really adorable. The illustrations were excellent and the poetry was fun. I like that it provided the opportunity for readers to guess which animal the poem was describing. I also like that it provided information about each animal and which "award" it won and why. This is a great book to get readers interested in the animal world! Readers that enjoy poetry, nature and animals will enjoy this one.
What a delight! I liked the poetic riddle to introduce each animal, and I thought the information for each animal was just the right amount. Perfect for the animal lover, the fact collecting kid, and one who loves to play with words.
Another winner that I found in the read now section. I read this with both of my sons and they loved it. I thought it was super cute, and the facts about each animal after each poem was great. Will purchase for my kids shelf.
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy for review.
What a great book! Students will have a great time guessing the animal by reading a fun poem and looking at beautiful illustrations. On the accompaniying page are facts about that animal. I will definitely be using this in my classroom during our poetry unit.
-I loved the format of this book. A poem was written in the form of a riddle for each animal with only part of the animal showing. Then on the next page, the animal was revealed along with a page of fun facts about the animal. My kids will love it!
This book is so cute and very educational. I love the poems was bout the different animals. What I love more is the little paragraph that is written about the animals.. Slot of the information, I did not know and it was very interesting. The kids would love the information along with everything else. Great book and fun read.
I received a free copy of the book and is voluntarily leaving a review
Simple cute poems about each animal give hints about what the animal is and what its 'prize' is then each animal gets an in-depth description of it and why it wins the prize.
The soft copy is not made available for download so not able to read and review. Please provide the copy for the same purpose
Unfortunately I am unable to give a proper review due the downloaded material not matching the title/cover. Hopefully this can be corrected for future reviewers.
The stories are laid out as if in a comic book. It didn't feel as if there were "poems" in the story. Overall, the story was a fun read.
