I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A children's biography about the Van Buren sisters who paved the way for women based on the many things they did during their time.
This is the sort of book we see occasionally - a woman who defies cultural standards and opens the door for future women to do the same. This one gives us a few unique details. Not only is this a story of sisters, they were raised to be independent and as capable as their brothers. It's no wonder, then, that they decided to travel the country on a motorbike, wearing trousers. It's a simple narrative. The language is easy to understand and none of the content is challenging so it's suitable for young readers
A wild ride through history with the unstoppable Van Buren sisters! This picture book biography follows the lives of Addie and Gussie Van Buren who thwarted societal expectations as they *gasp* wore pants and rode on motor bikes across the United States to prove that women were capable of anything. Despite opposition, they finished their ride, working to push for new roles for women.
The Van Buren Sisters vs. the Pants Police is a fun picture book biography about two sisters who defied gender norms and rode motorbikes cross-country in pants in the 1910s. The art really suits the story, with a sort of comic meets picture book layout that really helps bring it to life. The story itself is fun and engaging, a solid introduction to a part of history that will appeal to plenty of kids. Recommended!
When the first world war broke out, outspoken sisters Adeline and Augusta Van Buren (yes, they were related to our 8th president) decided that though women couldn't fight, they could at least serve as battlefield messengers. To prove their point, they motorcycled 4000 miles across the U.S. Clad entirely in leather for protection against the elements and accidents, they chose to wear practical PANTS, versus the yards of excess fabric that comprised women's dresses of the day. Silly as it seems, their attire garnered more attention than the reason behind their long trek.
This is a fun look at a little-known bit of history, made enticing for the younger set through Fox's words, and Anna Kwan's lovely artwork. A good choice for libraries everywhere.
What an amazing book! I cannot believe that I have never heard of the amazing Van Buren sisters and their snubbing of what "society" deemed proper and went their own way; this would have been a book I read over and over when I was a kid [as I never did seem to like being told what to do].
The true story of the Van Buren sisters is very timely [I could hardly believe when I saw in the news that certain factions of government want to AGAIN mandate what people should and shouldn't wear. In 2023!!! Yeah, like that's going to happen] and a good reminder that it wasn't truly that long ago that women were told what to wear, how to behave and were extremely limited in what they did with their lives and that if not for forward thinking people much like the Van Buren sisters [and the amazing father that raised them], we would still be struggling [harder than we currently are]. The illustrations really add to the story and it was a glorious story from beginning to end. I am so glad I had the opportunity to read about these amazing sisters and all that they accomplished and how they paved the way for other women to break free from society's molds. VERY well done!!
Thank you to NetGalley, J.F. Fox, Anna Kwan - Illustrator and Kids Can Press for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
OOOOOOOH, I LOVED THIS ONE.
I thought it was so great! I would have wanted to be their friend if I was around during that time. They said who cares and we're going to go out there and do what we want to do in the most logical way (see: IN PANTS) and you're just going to have to accept it! I loved their cross country road trip!
This is a head to head history book. This review is based on a galley where all speech bubbles were not yet filled in. Overall, just the story part of this book and the info bit the back are great. It’s about the Van Buren sisters, and how they dared ride across country on a motorbike wearing pants. This doesn’t sound like anything now, but at the time they did this, it was very controversial. We can thank the Van Buren sisters for helping the movement of women’s rights. And we can thank the publisher for making sure that this book is available for all to read and find out about these amazing sisters.
Another loved book! Such a great perspective of two sisters who went against the grain in a time when going against the grain was unheard of! Beautiful illustrations support a beautifully written tale of two sisters who fought the odds and crossed the country against the wishes of others. They did it to prove a point and boy, was a point proven! So grateful for books like this that show the strengths of women whose odds are stacked against them. Thanks for the chance to read!
A delightful little slice of history that supports women and issues of clothing norms that exist even today! The writing is straightforward and the illustrations and design are wonderful. I was not personally familiar with the Van Buren sisters, so it was a nice mini-education for me! This would be a great addition to any children's library for kids up to teen age.
What wonderful luck the Van Buren girls had to have the father they had. Thank you #NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in advance of its May 2, 2023 publication date. I will buy this for a future gift! 5-stars.
Loved this book! Subject matter was interesting, and it struck a great balance between informative and entertaining. Perfect amount of text-per-page for an elementary school read-aloud. I will definitely be getting this title for our school’s collection, and would love to see more from this author.
This book was informational, interesting and well paced for younger readers. I enjoyed the illustrations.
Lots of fun to read about these sisters and their daring ride! I hadn't heard of them before and so it was illuminating to discover their exploits. Timely for these days of activism and it will be so much fun to share with younger grade school audiences. Today the idea of wearing pants being scandalous seem so nonsensical, and it can be a good reminder how times and attitude can change! A lively book for a quick read, but now I want to find out more about the sisters!
I was really impressed by this book. The Van Buren Sisters vs. the Pants Police is a straightforward, funny, and inspiring story of two sisters who motorcycled across the United States, shattering preconceived notions of women in the process.
The illustrations stood out to me as compelling in their simplicity. The graphic style was appealing to me. I loved the little speech bubbles from various characters--they added a bit of personality and fun to the story,
The book moved quickly and the sentences were usually short, which will help keep young readers' attention. And of course, the title is sure to interest lots of little ones when they walk by it on display!
This was a fun and funny book about the Van Buren sisters, who had their own ideas of what was 'ladylike' and refused to bend to society's wishes.
The story is told in a breezy and amusing way, and the illustrations are very expressive and emphasize the amusing parts. At the same time, it emphasizes how ridiculous the old ideas are and how capable women are, no matter what people say.
Kiddo (8) enjoyed it immensely - especially the pants police part.
The information at the back elaborates on how women were supposed to behave and how the Van Buren sisters broke those rules. I had no idea pants weren't widely accepted as women's wear until the 1960s - that's just bizarre.
This is a fun book for kids to read to supplement lessons about how women and men have not always been treated equally.
*Thanks to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for providing an early copy for review.
🏍 What a great book for Women’s History Month!
🏍 This is a true story about two sisters who had the audacity to do something very unladylike in the early 1900s – wear pants and ride motorbikes across the United States!
🏍 The story is brief (40 pages) but powerful, with a great message for girls. There is a section at the end of the book that provides some additional detail about the sisters for historical context, along with a glossary and a bibliography.
🏍 The title is great and would attract young readers easily.
🏍 The illustrations are delightful.
🏍 This book isn’t available until early May, but teachers and parents absolutely need to pre-order this for your kiddos and classrooms! It is an inspiring story about two women who changed perceptions about females, and it needs to be shared. Now please excuse me while I go search for a grown-up book about these ladies because I would love to know even more about them!
Thank you @netgalley and @kidscanpress for an eARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I loved Van Buren Sisters vs. The Pants Police! The title is "wacky" enough I know students would pick it up, the illustrations are very well done and trendy enough that older students will enjoy it. I had never heard of the Van Buren Sisters previously and was really excited to hear about more adventurous and change making women in history!
Not only will I buy this for my School Library, I'm looking forward to adding to my home Library.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This book gives a simple tale about how the Van Buren sisters rode across the country while wearing pants. Due to this happening in the early 1910s, this caused them many issues and they got in trouble due to the laws of the time. The book gives a short history of the girl's early years, then focuses on their trip. The end has a page that includes facts from the era and how the Van Buren sisters were different from what was expected.
I did feel like the story portion was oversimplified, especially compared to how much information was given in the end. I think that this book would have done better with more of a story instead of a bare recitation of facts as it did have. The very simple storytelling at the beginning makes this a good book for younger readers, as long as there is someone older to explain or read the information on the last page
What a hoot! A hilarious and heartfelt take on women's history. My only regret is that this book won't be out in time for Women's History Month this year, but it's sure to be a smash hit this spring. Fox brings levity to sexist nonsense that pairs perfectly with Kwan's action-packed illustrations. Readers big and small will wish they were around in the time of the Van Buren sisters, if only to meet such badass women and ride alongside them!
This is one fun read on twin sisters' biography, how they didn't let traditions hinders their good will, and show a new meaning of being women in 1800s. When I read history in the form of comic book like this. it is more entertaining and I can retain more information. The Van Buren Sisters are truly inspiring.
