A heartwarming story about finding your place. A combination of sweet and silly, it's definitely an enjoyable tale.
I’ve always enjoyed sharing fun picture books with my kids and was sad when they outgrew bedtime stories. Sometimes I get lucky and get to read them with a grandchild. Tonight I enjoyed this book with my 8 year old grandson. WHAT IF I’M NOT A CAT? by Kari-Lynn Winters and Kelly Collier.
Donkey lives in the farmers barn along with the rest of the cats. He knows he’s a cat because he acts just like them. One day the farmer unwittingly lets the cat out of the bag and now Donkey is worried. What if he’s not a cat?
This is an adorable story and filled with wonderfully colorful drawings throughout. It would be a great book for a child that’s already reading and for those not there yet. My grandson really enjoyed it and giggled at Donkeys antics. 5 stars!
Thanks to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for allowing me to review this delightful book.
In this book, Donkey learns that he might not actually be a cat. Donkey eventually learns who he really is through an act of heroic bravery. This book is perfect for those who are looking to find who they really are.
I love the illustration and the story' was enjoyable to read. The donkey and his identity. Its funny but i think its kind a deep story' about identity.
My students laughed all throughout this book. They love books with kittens in it. We also enjoyed the play on words with don-kitty and me-haw. We want to see what donkey comes up with next.
What If I'm Not a Cat? is a comical story about a confused donkey. I read this book to my 3rd grade students and they laughed at all the silliness...especially Don-Kitty!. They liked the illustrations because "it helped explain the story better."
I loved the message of this book. We had a great class discussion about the author's message and decided that you can look/be different and still fit in. Students also commented that everyone is unique and we don't need to look the same as everyone else.
A fun read aloud with a wonderful message!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Donkey is a cat, he's sure of it, but what if he's not a cat? A funny read-aloud book for little ones.
Our Thoughts ~ loveed it, such a great spin on finding out who you are and where/how you fit in. Such a funny heartwarming story. My daughter laughed throughout the book. As people with cats we thought it was very laughable. It definitely got the meaning of the book across in a way my 7 year old daughter understood. We loved the illustrations they paired so well with the story.
What a delightful read! This one had my boys in fits of giggles because it was obvious that the donkey was in fact, not a cat! But I loved the lesson in it, and thought this was a super fun way to show that everyone has their place in the world; even if we think we ought to be more like someone else to fit in.
In this adorable picture book, a donkey raised with cats wonders, "What if I'm not a cat?" Donkey's journey of self-discovery is fun and cute. I'd definitely share this book with the kids in my life.
This book is very unique and heartwarming! i love it, i really like how all the cats support each other. Me-haw!
What if I'm not a Cat?
5 Stars
What a charming, funny, and heartwarming read. I absolutely loved joining Donkey on his journey to find his own self-identity, and what it means to belong. I found myself smiling along with the story. I enjoyed the silly illustrations of Donkey doing cat-like things, because cats are all a little odd. I especially love how supportive Donkey's friends are and how welcoming it is to find one's tribe. A great addition to anyone's library.
Thank you, NetGalley and Kids Can Press, for an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
My daughter and I absolutely loved this book. The fact that we both love cats and donkeys is a bonus! Both the text and illustrations are fantastic and beautifully complement each other. It is a unique and fun spin on the theme of finding out who you are and how you fit in.
Donkey is a character you immediately like and root for on his quest to find out whether indeed he is a cat or not. The cats in the illustrations and their comments throughout make for great added humour and reveal each of the different cats’ personalities.
There’s so many silly joyous moments throughout from when he’s trying to be a cat, to finding out he may not actually be a cat at all and then for his journey onwards and then ending is perfect. It’s a fun romp from beginning to end, for picture book readers of all ages. It would be great to share at bedtimes, but equally great to read in the classroom when discussing how everyone’s individuality should be celebrated.
This book was so wholesome and heartwarming! Donkey thought he is a cat because of his upbringing and was confused that one time the farmer told him he acts like a cat. I loved how the cats are very supportive of donkey and one cat was also confused if he is also a cat. I especially loved the resolution here wherein donkey accepted who he is and embraces his individuality and doesn't conform to labels set by others. He is a donkey AND a cat.
The illustrations are adorable! I love this little book so much and it's so funny. I think kids will definitely like this book!
Such a cute story of finding identity and fitting in. Reminded me a lot of the book Red. Would be a great addition to any lower elementary classroom.
Laugh out loud funny with great pictures. My 6 year old grandson and I loved it. It's a quick bed time read.
Hilarious story that can be enjoyed for all ages. Everyone will laugh out loud at this book. Enjoyed it very much.
What a sweet, heartwarming book!
With my teacher hat on, this would be a great book to read with a class of any age. Younger students would love the silliness of a donkey thinking it was a cat and the playfulness of the text. With an older class, you could use the book to engage students into a discussion about identity and what it means to belong and fit in.
My favourite part was the range of responses from the cats when donkey was questioning his identity. I love that there was many different comments, not just no you're not a cat or yes you are.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to review this book!
The book is about a Donkey, who grew up with cats, thinks he is a cat, but strongly suspects something is un-cat-like about him. The book is about family, belonging and somewhat about identity. I’m pretty sure the main theme is chosen family and looking above labels. Which is extremely important. The illustrations are very nice and fun. The storytelling however is lacking something.. but overall it is a good book I would recommend for kids.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing my ARC.
