This book provided a funny insight into pregnancy and a great twist on what to expect when you’re expecting. I liked the subtle humor in the book. It was written in a very realist style. I read it shortly after having my daughter and found the information to be insightful, but also accurate. I’d recommend this to any new/expectant parent.
"This is a unicorn. It's about as real as your parents' alone time these days."
Here's a funny look at all those things that make babies special - diapers, spitting up, sleepless nights, more diapers . . .
After poking fun at the horrors of early parenthood, the book ends with a warm and fuzzy AWWWW.
A sweet and heartwarming read for both new AND old parents.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* this was a great book! i showed it to my pregnant friend and she wanted to buy it! would recommend!
This picture book will appeal to some Millennial parents, but it's not as humorous as I had hoped. The illustrations show different animals and objects, and the text introduces them by saying snarky things like, "This is an owl. Like you, it never sleeps at night." That's one of the funniest ones, and the book doesn't have much to offer. The goal is for this to be a gentler alternative to vulgar picture books about parenting struggles, but this will be too harsh for many parents without being funny or unique enough for the ones who want something like this.
The book jokes about things not like being able to afford day care, and about the parents numbing themselves out with alcohol to deal with their stress. The book takes a more positive and meaningful turn towards the end, but then it's negative once more, ending with "Oh, you son of a..." and trailing off. This sort of thing could make a funny baby shower gift, but it's not something that most parents will want to read to their child repeatedly.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own."
I found some pages amusing like daycare and mortgages, but as a whole it fell flat for me..
This was such a fun and relatable book. I love the idea of making a baby book for grown ups. The illustrations were great and paired well with the messages. This would make a perfect gift for new parents, but I think it would be great for all parents.
Perfection! The imagery is perfect for little ones to look at while parents have a shit ton of giggles at bedtime!
This book could not be more perfect for new parents. I wish that I had this book as a new parent! This book will help parents laugh instead of crying during ups and downs of a newborn, while also having great illustrations for the baby to look at. I will definitely be purchasing this book as a baby gift in the future.
Thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
What Were You Expecting? is a hilarious and highly relatable book. The illustrations are engaging and catch the attention of the little ones, while the wording is a hilarious exchange of real and relatable parenting moments. As a parent to a toddler who will love the illustrations, this will be purchased when available. I laughed out loud, reading the story.
This book is adorable and hilarious! This is just the type of board book I would buy for my infant daughter. Great illustrations, and I love that it ends on such a happy, upbeat and sincere message.
Both funny and sweet, this book is written as if the narrator is the parents addressing their baby, but Spires is good humoredly letting all new parents know that she is speaking to them, reassuring them that they are not alone in their love and exhaustion.
This is a hilarious and lovable book. The beautiful illustrations suit the curious mind of a toddler and the well written words make the reading fun for parents. I couldn't think of a better combination suited for new parents.
If you are a parent who doesn't like reading in general, or finds children's books boring, this is the perfect buy for you as it will entertain both you and your child.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Kids Can Press in exchange for an honest review.
This has been a real delight to read. As a recent new parent who has almost survived her first year, this book gave me lots of laughs. I also really liked that while be funny, it has a sweet and sentimental ending. I will get this for any friends, and will request us to order for our parenting section.
I loved this book! I thought it was funny and witty. I think I expected more of a parenting book when I requested it but was pleasantly surprised at the humor and that it was a kids book.
This is fun take on making light of the struggles of parenting. From the illustrations, this book looks like it would be good for babies and toddlers and it should probably only be read to them if they won't understand what you're reading to them! The book would be great as a gift for new or expecting parents.
I wish this book were around when I was waking up twice a night with a hungry baby who then thought it was a good time to socialize.
What Were You Expecting by Cameron Spires and Grace Cho is sure to bring a smile to any exhausted parent's face. You're going to read to the little treasures anyway, and they are going to be clueless as to what you're actually saying, so why not get some personal satisfaction and relief while you're at it. The pictures are beautiful and will catch your baby's eye, while the words will reassure you that you are not alone.
What Were You Expecting is a delightful baby book that would make a fabulous gift for new parents.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the advanced copy.
As a childless Thirty-something, I was drawn to this book due to my job in corralling tiny humans and their grown-ups in a library. This book was just the right blend of sass, humor, and absolutely adorable illustrations! I can't wait to get a copy in my branch so I can introduce so many new readers.

I would call this book a solid 4.5:
I feel like baby books are like Christmas songs - there is 10-12 of them just recorded by different artists. There are only so many books you can read to your child before they start to all blend to together. "What Were You Expecting" definitely bucks this trend. This book has beautifully illustrated pages that your baby will love but the words? The words are all for mom and dad. Like the book says, the baby can't understand what we are saying anyway so look at the pictures while we read the words. The authors compare the cute artwork to how parents REALLY feel. "Look at this house, it looks like the one we had before we had to remortage our home to afford daycare. Just kidding. We can't find any daycares". It is a happy medium between your standard children's book and "Go the F**K to Sleep" by Adam Mansbach. As a new parent of a two month old, I highly relate to this book and can't wait to share it with my little one. If you are looking for a new book for your child or as a gift - this one is sure to be a favorite!
Anyone who is a parent can't help but smile when they read this book. It's a creative, cute little children's book with words written to help parents keep hanging on through those first through days/weeks/months after baby comes home and everyone goes through huge adjustments. The simple and colorful illustrations help to captivate and soothe your little one, as you try to focus your sleep deprived eyes on the book and get your baby back to sleep for the 15th time at night. This book will make the perfect gift for baby showers and newborn gifts for both parents and baby to enjoy together through many sleepless nights!
Thank you Netgalley for my ARC of this book!
