For readers who wonder if a regular person could really turn into a superhero, this informative book tells all about inventions, human capabilities, and future ideas of how we can stretch our five senses, muscle strength, brain power, and even life expectancy longer and stronger. I thought this would be a book about prostheses, but really it's about how science is looking at biomimicry, human evolution, and past inventions to create new ways for humans to be stronger and more capable.
Excellent source for scientific innovations impacting the every day lives of humanity...written in a language kids can understand! I love reading this book and my kids did, too. It's lengthy, but animated. A great option for older elementary through high school readers. The illustrations and combination of infographics and text help the reader truly understand the advancements that humans have made over the course of history. Fascinating read!
A cute picture book showing kids the good things that have come from Science over the years. Because science has helped make peoples live easier.
Thanks to Netgalley and Owlkids Books for the ARC of this!
This was an interesting look at the science of improving the human body, touching on topics from prosthetics to CPR and other life lengthening procedures. The illustrations were good and my 6 & 9 year old were able to follow along. This is probably best for 8-12 year olds with an interest in bodies, medicine, and/or superheroes.
My students will LOVE this book. I thought it was pretty fascinating! It talks about everything “superpower-like” such as the history of prosthetics, the origins of CPR, amazing feats of physical strength, how transplants were created, and how scientists study animals to help humans. It uses superheroes to break down the possibility and science behind their abilities, so it makes it very engaging and relatable. I see some fun writing projects in the future with this one.
I loved the information and I loved the illustrations but I didn't necessarily love them together. I felt for the topic, there should have been real diagrams or pictures so the children could get a clear picture in their heads. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the early read.
The strengths of this book lie in the graphic design, as each page is laid out in an easy to read format -- following advanced in technology through time. The illustrations are clean, bringing to life various moments in time or equipment for students to visualize. However, I found the superhero link to each chapter to be a little bit of a stretch and am not sure if it works. It will absolutely lead to more students and children pulling it off the shelf, but I'm not sure the students attracted to the superhero design will actually follow through to read each chapter afterwards. It may benefit from being advertised more clearly for kids who are interested in technology, engineering, coding, robotics, etc, who are likely to follow through and read each chapter.
