A Love That Heals The Heart. Wow I loved the book. It was definitely entertaining. Jonah was my favorite character. He came across as very strong, smart and determined to win the woman that he loved. Mariah was alright herself, but I could only take her wishy washy feelings towards Jonah. I was a bit tiresome after the third time Jonah was confessing himself to her. The story seemed very real. The plot has a motivational factor for all the characters. I enjoyed the way the book ended.

Could Love Be Enough?
Jonah’s brother had only daughters, so his brother asked him to find a wife since keeping their lineage alive fell to him. His wife could die if she got pregnant again. However, Jonah was in love with Mariah, who kept saying “no” to his proposal. Mariah did not have what Jonah needed, and she loved him enough to let him go. Was their love doomed, or did they stand a chance? This is a heart-wrenching story, and Mariah and Jonah will have much to overcome. I did enjoy the story and would recommend it to lovers of historical romance.
This is the fourth installment of the Men of Valor series. I have enjoyed all the stories thus far and this one also did not disappoint. This is Dr. Jonah's story. If you read book 3 you know that he had helped Annie overcome her addiction to opium and laudanum and also established Hope's House, so that he may help others struggling with addiction as well. Jonah had to make his own way in the world after becoming a doctor because his father disowned him for choosing his profession. As a result, Jonah hasn't spoken to his brother Russell in years, who now reaches out to him and brings him to London. Russell hasn't been able to have a son, and he wants Jonah to marry and continue the family line. He agrees and joins the marriage mart and reconnects with Mariah, who he had been friends with when they were children. Jonah is easily captivated by her, but Mariah decided a while ago she would not marry. She has devoted her life to taking care of her family, especially Charlie who she had a terrible riding accident with many years ago. Because of the injuries he sustained, he is now addicted to laudanum. Jonah helps Mariah in getting Charlie the help he needs and they grow closer and fall in love. But because of the injuries she sustained from the riding accident, she believes she can never be the wife Jonah needs.
This was a heartwarming story that will definitely pull at your heartstrings. The characters were wonderful and endearing and you can't help but fall in love with them. I easily got swept away in the story and was engaged from start to finish. A great story and lovely addition to the series!
Thank you to Dragonblade Publishing and Netgalley for providing a complimentary copy. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion.
This is book 4 of the Men of Valor series, and a more direct continuation of the book three, in that this is the story of Dr. Jonah Reynolds, who helped Annie overcome her opium/laudanum addiction in book 3, and on the Washburn's estate, established Hope's House, a hospice where he can focus on helping others overcome their addiction.
Because of his choice to pursue a career in medicine, Jonah was disowned by his father, the Viscount Darbringth years prior. As such, he made his own way through the world and had lost contact with his brother for years. His brother, Russell reaches out to Jonah to reestablish ties and brings him to London. But he has plans beyond healing the rift with his brother. It turns out that Russell and his beloved wife have had several children, but they are all daughters. He has been warned that her health and life would be at risk if she were to try to get pregnant again, and Russell is terrified of losing her, so wishes for Jonah to marry and have children to continue their line. Jonah agrees to aide his brother in this endeavour.
As he joins the marriage mart, he meets Mariah and her brother, Charlie, the Earl of Aspen. They had been childhood friends that he had lost touch with when he left for school. Mariah had grown into a beautiful woman who is warm and intelligent, and Jonah is delighted by her, and easily falls in love with her. However, Mariah had decided many years ago that she would not be a suitable wife for anyone, and has devoted herself to caring for her family, especially her brother, Charlie. It turns out that when she was a teenager, she and Charlie were in a terrible riding accident. One that left both her and Charlie with serious injuries. Because she felt terrible for the pain that Charlie was in, she thought she would help by giving him pain relief - with laudanum. Years later, they still have to live with the consequences of that accident, as Charlie has now become addicted to laudanum and because of her injuries, Mariah is barren.
When Mariah finds out about Hope's House, she and Jonah approach Charlie about facing his addiction, which he wants to do to be able to move forward with his own life. But this forces Mariah and Jonah to be in close proximity, and they fall further in love, despite Mariah knowing she would never be the wife he needs.
I really connected to the warmth and love of the characters of this story - not just the romance, but the familial love and caring of the various characters and how they wanted to help. It was quite lovely and heartwarming and that really brought the story to the level of touching my heart. Also, the medical/healthcare aspects are always able to capture my interest as well. This may be my favourite of the series so far.
4 stars out of 5
The fourth book in the Men of Valor series. Doctor Jonah Reynolds and Lady Mariah's story is well written with a very good storyline that held my interest throughout. At times there will be some tears, and some happy moments. The story was well worth reading. I have now bought the rest of the series. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A historical novel dealing with a modern issue. This is a romance about a man who defies his family to become a doctor specialising in addiction. The FMC is a lady of noble birth who cannot have children due to an accident. This story was really well written with an engaging plot and likeable characters. I found it was a little too angsty for my personal taste. Pick up this book if you like a more thoughtful historical romance and don’t mind a repetitive fmc. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Jonah Reynolds left his family over his father's wishes and became a doctor. A doctor who helps people with addiction to opium at his hospital called Hope's House. Returning to London after twelve years, Jonah isn't prepared for his brother's request, but he has an answer. The only woman he wants is Mariah. Seeing Jonah again and helping her brother overcome his addiction, only makes Maria love him more, but she will never marry and have children. Jonah loves her, but she will only say she can't give him what he wants. A heartbreaking love story bound by a promise and a tragedy. Clean romance with tears.
Love the epilogue.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
A tragic accident that steers lives differently than what had been laid out.
Part of the book was predictable BUT there were a few surprises that were well worth the read through.
I recieved a free copy so that I might tell you what I honestly think. Hope you enjoyed my review. Now go enjoy the book.
A sweet slow burn that did drag a little as most of the problem was down to the ability to have children it was an ok read but didn't really take off for me but a solid read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Lady Mariah made a terrible decision when she was sixteen that will affect her and her elder brother forever.
Jonah Reynolds was disowned by his father because he chose to become a doctor. Years later he runs a very special hospital. His brother's request for him to take on an extra responsibility for the family name will cause him more heartache than his patients.
This historical romance is filled with characters that put other people's needs above their own. There is a lot of emotional torment but also an all encompassing love story.
If you have read any of the previous books in this series you will have met our hero. That will not stop you from reading this on its own, but will tempt you to catch up with the secondary characters that have had their stories.
I loved it.
Unfortunately I am once again let down by this series. There is a lack of depth, no emotion, lack of passion, and the plot lacks any *umph* … too bland for me.
On a positive note I loved the covers for this series.

Mariah and her brother Charles were in a terrible riding accident when they were younger. Both siblings remain adversely affected by the event. Jonah Reynolds is a respected doctor who runs a hospital designed to help those addicted to opium. When he returns to London at his brother’s request, he meets his old friends Mariah and Charles. Because his brother asks him to marry for the sake of the family name, he knows at once he wants Mariah to be his wife. He doesn’t understand why she rejects his proposal. He does understand that he can help Charles. While they are at Hope House, he can discover why she refuses to marry him and change her mind. This is a wonderful story filled with compassion and emotion. The characters care about each other and others. There is heartache and healing, and the solutions to the different situations are heartwarming. A lovely addition to the series.

A Love That Heals the Heart by Laura Landon is a short, but sweet, romance with a couple of amazing people leading the fray. Jonah Reynolds was a successful doctor. He ran a clinic where people could be cured of their laudanum addiction. He had left home 12 years earlier when his father gave him the choice of becoming a doctor or continue being a part of the family. His father had since died: he hadn’t attended the funeral. Now, he had a missive from his older brother, Russell, inviting him home. Of course he would go. Once there he met Russell’s lovely wife, Julia, and his four daughters. After the girls had gone to bed, and Julia with them, Russell explained his dilemma: he needed an heir. At this point it was Jonah, but Jonah had to marry and produce an heir or the estate would leave the family when they died. Jonah saw the dilemma, but had never met a woman he wanted to marry. Then he met Mariah, who had been his childhood friend, well, her brother had been. But she refused to entertain his offer. The first night he met her, he also was reintroduced to her brother, Charles, and immediately recognized the symptoms of laudanum dependency. He explained to her what he did and she wanted it for Charles, since it was her fault he was addicted.
This is a modern story in some ways. Addiction was real then, but I have never read of anyone trying to cure it. While Mariah and Charles were at his hospital, he was able to introduce them to his friends: the wife in one of the couples had been one of his first patients, and the others ran an orphanage. Mariah was a good character, willing to sacrifice her own happiness so that Jonah could marry a woman who could produce an heir. Jonah seemed to be the perfect man. He was beyond understanding, but he was also stubborn, at least where Mariah was concerned. He was also generous and dedicated. He was an excellent hero for this story. It was a different kind of plot and was very entertaining to read. It was not a long book, but it stuffed a lot into its pages. It’s a very positive read for this, or any, time of year.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of A Love That Heals the Heart by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #LauraLandon #ALoveThatHealsTheHeart
Beautifully written and emotive, this novel started with a tragedy, however, Lady Mariah is no whimpering female bewailing her fate. Taking responsibility for her choices, she lives with the consequences. Rejected by his father for his choice of profession, Jonah is surprised to receive a summons to visit his older brother as ever since Jonah had been cut off, there had been no contact between them. He finds reconciliation, but also a request that he marry and assist in providing his brother with an heir. His fortuitous meeting with his old friends Mariah and Charles immediately raises his hopes as he believes that Mariah will be an ideal bride, but is shocked when she rejects his offer. However, Jonah discovers an even bigger problem and he is the one person who can reach out to Mariah and her brother, which also gives Jonah the opportunity to wheedle the truth out of Mariah. I was ready to give on Jonah and Mariah as a couple, but they were in for a surprise, which changed everything. I received a copy of this heartwarming novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Jonah Reynolds hasn’t seen his family in years, after his father banished him for choosing to become a doctor. His elder brother contacts him & asks a favour. It’s the one thing Jonah cannot refuse—give the family an heir and save the Darbringth title. But finding a willing wife seems impossible when the one woman who steals his heart refuses to marry him. Lady Mariah yearns for nothing more than to have a home of her own and a loving man to share it with but knows she can never marry.
A well written quite emotional read. I loved both Jonah & Mariah who’d grown up as neighbours but he went away to study & she & her brother Charles suffered riding accidents. both of them are selfless & caring, they don’t deny their love but she adamant that they can't marry. I did wonder how things would be resolved - afterall it is a romance! I loved how things worked out. I also loved that whilst this is a standalone book characters from previous books made appearances
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A Love that Heals the Heart by Laura Landon is a beautiful story about lasting love and family expectations.
Jonah is a doctor whose specialty is to work and help those afflicted with addictions. He has built a wonderful hospital with the help of his friends. He has been summoned home by his brother, Russell, and decides to make the short trip to see what he needs. Russell has a loving wife and 5 beautiful daughters but needs a son to carry on the name and title. He requests Jonah find a wife, settle down, and have an heir for their family since it would be too dangerous for his wife to have more children. After seeing their family friend Mariah, he has no problem with that plan as he realizes how much he has always felt for her.
Mariah and her brother Charles were involved in a terrible riding accident years before, that left Charles with an addiction to opiates, and Mariah without the ability to give Jonah what he needs. Her desire to do the right thing for Jonah and his family is at odds with the love she has in her heart for him. Jonah wants to help his longtime friend be clear of the dependence and Charles is more than willing to do the work to become healthy again. However, he wants Mariah to journey with him and Jonah to the hospital to help. Of course, Mariah will go, even if that puts her near Jonah for an extended period.
I love reading a Laura Landon story. She weaves a wonderful tale of heartache, angst, and longing against a backdrop of family, friends, and love. The way she brings her characters to life makes easy connections with the reader. These people grabbed me from the beginning of the story and kept hold of me past the end. I was awed by the love Jonah has for Mariah and how he was not afraid to show her. I understood Mariah’s reticence, but I loved the resolution to their conundrum. This was a brilliantly written conclusion to the Men of Valor series. It was nice to see the friends from the previous books and catch up on their lives. I received an arc of this book from NetGalley, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
A Love That Heals the Heart is exactly that! This is kind of a second chance type romance in that Jonah and Mariah’s love developed years prior when they were still too young to recognize it for what it was, nor could they act on it. Now, Jonah has to convince Mariah she is worth his love and worth being his wife. Jonah tells her repeatedly he does not care about producing an heir for the family; he cares about her. So, we are walked through the pain and anguish the riding accident caused Mariah and her brother, Charles.
Ms. Landon shares the difficulty laudanum causes to an addict. Jonah, against his father’s wishes, became a medical doctor. His chosen profession is an important part of his connection to Mariah and Charles, as well as, important to his brother and his brother’s wife.
I thoroughly enjoy Ms. Landon’s romances due to their realistic nature and that they center on the characters and their lives, not on sensual desire.
A wonderful tale of giving and sacrifice,, amidst personal tragedy and family ailment. I admire the main characters’ generosity and specially enjoyed the ending.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
I did not care for this book as much as I would have liked. It had not so much a slow burn, but a, I-can't-marry-you-because that went on and on. The main reason was the love interest was barren, because of a riding accident, and the male love interest needed some male heirs to carry on the family title.
So, back and forth they go, as they visit an orphanage, which, like Chekhov's gun, has a very clear role later on in the story. In fact, it is a telegraphed to the reader so hard that I felt like shouting to the characters to pick up on it.
It was a bit slow for me. I do love a slow burn, but did not feel that that was what i was getting here. Perhaps I am not familiar enough with recency romance to recognize that this is the way they are all written.
Your milage may vary.
