I really enjoyed reading this book. The story follows John Crackstone as he negotiates he way through disappointments in his life and work and sets out to break the record for growing a world record pumpkin. As I reader I found myself cheering John on in the pumpkin contest and as he finds his footing again in his life and work. The book is very well written and easy to read. Enjoy

An unexpectedly charming and clever read.

A preacher trying to turn giant pumpkin farmer is an odd topic for a novel, and it only gets weirder in the details. But for some reason it worked, and this odd little novel was a fun read.

There’s not much about the basic plot that would usually interest me (indeed, I still can’t recall what motivated me to pick this up in the first place), but somehow Young makes the seemingly mundane subject matter engrossing.

The story’s sense of humor and sharp moments of introspection make it transcend the subject, and speaking of…I did somehow end up oddly intrigued by the technicalities of how to successfully grow a giant pumpkin.

While I was intrigued by what was going on (or perhaps I should say not going on) between John and Carol, I was a little disappointed by the too convenient and irritating portrayal of Nancy as a bit of a shrew until it was narratively convenient for her not to be. Oh that wife, she’s a real drag right up until her husband has his mostly imaginary dalliance and realizes she’s maybe not so bad after all. Sigh. Male authors, please be better than this.

Otherwise, it’s a fun read that is surprisingly intriguing and uplifting.

"Getting Huge" is a delightful read about finding and losing one's way. Minister John Crackstone longs for more, and believes his escape lies in building a pumpkin empire. Insight comes from a fellow minister and mentor through which he may find redemption or at least, his humanity. I wish everyone would read this. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

I liked this for it's characters. The plot was good too. While this didn't have the polish of a more experienced author, there talent is there. This is a bit quirky and fun.

Thanks very much for the free ARC for review!!
