4/5 stars! This woman is UNWELL and UNHINGED but I was fully invested and dying to know where this story was going to end up.
My Husband is exactly my kind of book! It is translated from French and is told from the perspective of a woman who is obsessed with her husband. The less you know going into it, the better. It is compulsively readable and will keep you on the edge until the final sentence. Hilarious, twisted, deeply unserious, and perfectly camp, My Husband is a new all time favorite.
I finally got to sit down with this unhinged story, and I am so glad I did. It was insane, twisty, ridiculously unpredictable, and ultimately left me with my jaw hanging open, both at the audacity of the author and the main character she created. It is so rare to read such a vulnerable and batty book these days, and I am just obsessed with this one. While recognizing that not everyone will like this book, I will still be sending a copy to everyone I think will connect with it.
"My Husband by Maud Ventura is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the complexities of marriage and obsession. With echoes of Gone Girl and You, Ventura crafts a narrative where appearances deceive and secrets lurk beneath the surface of a seemingly perfect life. Tense, compelling, and darkly humorous, this novel keeps you guessing until its shocking conclusion."
My thoughts: I absolutely loved this book. It was a quick, delicious read that kept me hooked from start to finish. The narrator's obsessive and slightly unhinged perspective was fascinating and eerily relatable. While her actions were extreme, who hasn't had a version of this conversation in their head at some point in their lives? This book brilliantly captures the thin line between love and obsession, making it both unsettling and captivating.
Unhinged, wild, and unpredictible. I loved my husband so much! Maud makes living inside our obsessed narrator's head a true treat. I devoured this one on vacation, I'd 100% read another title by this author.
Though no fault of this book, I just could not get into it. I am in *another* reading slump and this one just couldn't hook me enough to keep going.
I’m not sure how I feel about this one still. I liked it while I was reading it but I found it very forgettable. I did really like the characters and the story line.
Chile, homegirl was crazy, I really thought at the end that she would kill her husband but she didn’t. She literally writes everything down. Everything that has to do with her husband that is. If he doesn’t kiss her before bed then she punishes him by not speaking to him the next day. Very weird behavior.
I also think the ending was predictable.
It made for a good and quick read though. I’m not mad at it. It wasn’t bad but it also wasn’t good. If that makes sense.
In 2023 I seem to have read a lot of first-person psychological character studies, my favorites including Emma Cline's The Guest and Ripe by Sarah Rose Etter. My Husband, at times, was as good as these titles, but never quite got to the level of intrigue for me. Had this book stuck the landing, it would have been 5 stars, but the 'twist' and the way it was delivered deflated rather than escalated the plot for me.
An odd little book; premise had promise, the book fell flat for me.
A 40 year old woman is obsessed with her husband of 13 years; so obsessed she hates that her kids distract attention from her.
Just wanted something thrilling to happen; the book was supposedly a thriller but it was not thrilling, almost more of a character study, albeit a crazy character.
Not my cup of tea.
Insane - so good. And the last chapter was just perfection I could not get over the whole thing. Also loved the lack of names oddly.
Oh I was not expecting to love this so much. It drags a bit in the middle, really hammering those characterizations home, but boy does it deliver in the end.
i love a good unhinged lady narrator and this is one to add to the stack. she’s OBSESSED with her husband and does everything she can to ensure he gives her affection to the point of spiraling into a sort of madness. well written and an ending i did not see coming!
Dark and twisty. The reveal at the end of the book really makes it. I expected it more to be a meditation on obsessive love but I would describe it more as a tense, thriller-y portrait of a marriage where something seems slightly off.
This was such a twisty tale.
I felt a sense of true mania along with the narrator as she recounted her week. Whether it was in terms of the colors that best represented or predicted her moods for the day. Or the thorough punishments she handed out to her absent minded husband, as he neglected the time and care she put into maintaining her “happy wife” facade.
An interesting take on the spells and spirals of love/obsession and how it festers in a relationship unchecked.
MY HUSBAND
Maud Ventura
MY HUSBAND is a quirky story with devilish characters. The combination makes for easy reading.
In MY HUSBAND we are following a happily married woman. She is interesting and has a unique way of relating to her husband. She sets him up for tests to make sure he is polite at all times, caring always, a great father, and more than anything else -faithful to her and their marriage.
He doesn’t always pass the test.
When this happens, there are consequences. The consequences vary in range but are almost always reformative in nature.
I already told you she was interesting.
This was quick. This was fun. This was quick fun. I enjoyed the writing and the opportunity to explore marriage and its complexities in a humorous way. I listened to the audiobook over one afternoon and thought it was the perfect petite length.
Thanks to Netgalley and HarperVia for the advanced copy!
MY HUSBAND…⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was bonkers!
The main reason why I didn't rate this book higher is the repetitive nature of it. The protagonist is sooooo obsessed with her husband that it got really aggravating quickly. I must admit that ending from the husband's point-of-view was delicious and so incredibly wicked. Decent novel just needed a little more polish and better editing.
This honest review is in exchange for an advanced reader copy from Netgalley.
This was an interesting book to read. An unnamed woman is obsessed and in love with her husband. She keeps her extreme love a secret but does not think the love is returned. This story keeps you on your toes. The deception is astounding and the unhealthiness of keeping this secret is evident throughout the book.
Does this story have a happy ending? This is something you will need to find out for yourself after committing to reading this book.
It was originally written in French and translated into English. It was an easy read and I enjoyed the depth of deception.
Told over the course of one week in the couple’s life, this book has all the tension of a domestic suspense novel with the biting wit of a dark comedy. It skewers the idea of the “perfect” marriage and reveals the dark inner thoughts of a wealthy suburbanite.

A woman obsessed with her husband!
I don’t know how many times I wanted to laugh while reading this book because the things that this woman did because she was so obsessed with her husband. I don’t know how many times she said “my husband in just one day alone! But wow!! Fascinating on how someone that looks so perfect on the outside can be so obsessive on the inside.
I probably would have rated this 3 stars but that ending left me with my mouth wide open. WTF……
