Thank you Netgalley and as alwaays, Orbit books for this advanced copy.

Paradise-1 was a thrilling read. I love how David Wellington wrote about the difference between human who stayed in space and in earth. That was thoughtful and smart. However, the pacing in this book was too fast. David Wellington didn't give me a time to breath to think about all of those event.

I also love every characters in this book. They had their own problem and got enough spotlight to tell their story.

I was given a copy of this book to review.

A good sci-fi book starts as a typical series in this genre and changes midway. I was very pleased with the plot twist and especially enjoyed the Robot. The villain was unexpected and a new feel made the book. I do suggest that is a must-read for sci-fi fans and look forward to more of this author and story line.

This was a fun read from start to finish.
It had some really fresh and interesting takes on AI. The thriller/horror parts were executed well (the unknown of deep space terrifying on its own, but the writer added some additional fun elements that I don't want to spoil). The rotating characters POV and their inner thoughts flowed nicely and were easily consumed. My only gripe is having to wait for book 2 to get more answers! TYSM for letting me be an ARC reader for this one, I really enjoyed it and can't wait for more.
4.5 stars rounded to 5.

I didn’t dislike this book, but it didn’t wow me, either. Some of that came down to personal taste and some came to matters of execution (IMO).
I liked Zhang and found his character arc compelling, and I was amused by Rapscallion, but I had trouble connecting with Petrova, the other POV character. I felt like she didn’t have a lot of depth and her inner conflict wasn’t very clear until the end of the book. I think the short chapters and relatively rapid POV switches contributed to my difficulty connecting with her. I prefer to spend longer chunks of time in any given character’s head (to those who have read the book: see what I did there?)
The other thing that kept me from enjoying this book more was the ending. I’m not a huge fan of cliffhanger endings, but I’ll tolerate them if I have to. The cliffhangers that bother me least are those that answer the questions posed by the narrative only to ask more. The ending of this book did raise additional questions, but it did so while leaving a lot of the mysteries of the book unsolved. This made the ending kind of unsatisfying for me.
This book contains some well-done and sometimes gruesome horror, and it contains a fairly original (for once) take on AI gaining self-awareness. I think people who like plot-focused stories with space battles and danger around every corner and who don’t mind cliffhanger endings will enjoy this book.

This book is non-stop action. It’s exciting, unpredictable, and at times horrific. I could not put it down. I loved every crazy second of this Sci-Fi Horror book.

Special Agent Petrov sent great at following orders, and ends up on a ship bound for the space colony Paradise 1. Along for the ride is a doctor with a mysterious device, and and the Captian, her ex-lover.

As soon as they arrive they find their ship under attack, and they are unable to communicate with the colony or anyone else. Where is everyone?

BEWARE: the CLIFFHANGER ending.
This novel is about getting to Paradise 1, but almost as soon as they land the book ends

Maybe I've read too much scifi but I found this predictable. It's as if the author plagiarized books he loved like Project Hail Mary, Leviathan Wakes, Dead Silence and the Murder Bot series. It wasn't very original, too long and repetitive and the cliff hanger at the end left me wanting more

This book was somewhat frustrating to read, review, and rate.

It wasn’t what I was expecting, and it was long, so I stayed committed hoping to at least get answers by the end.

Well, no answers, a blunt cliff hanger and more questions is how this book ended. I found this incredibly frustrating and despite wanting to know what the heck is actually going on, it’s thrown me off wanting to read any sequels.

The positives of this book were:
- the first half was intense, action packed, and kept you at the edge of your seat. I found the second half a bit more slow, repetitive (literally different characters would repeat the same observations).

- the characters, especially Rapscallion, were great to follow along with. Rapscallion is probably my favourite AI/robot character of all time now.

- a different take on a space thriller with a unique malevolent “being”.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Orbit Books for a copy.

I would have classified this book more towards horror than sci-fi despite it all taking place in space. Sasha is sent to Paradise-1 to check on the locals when an alien presence tries to stop her at all costs.
I'm not a huge fan of cliffhangers, and I felt that the book ended very abruptly. There was all this building up to being on the planet and we just get more mystery.

LONG - And Still Only Tells One Part Of The Story. The biggest thing I was left with at the end of this book was whether I was satisfied with the tale here - and thus the book should get the full 5* rating- or whether I thought it was a cash-grab that only told one part of the story and demands money to get the rest of the story (which I've seen in other books and written about in other reviews, though I note here that neither of these refer to books from this author) and thus should get a star deduction. Obviously, I ultimately sided with it being a complete tale *so far as it goes*, and I personally would love a sequel that picks up moments after this book leaves off.

As to the tale itself, think "Dead Space" or maybe a touch of the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2 or any number of other movies / tv shows / games / book / etc where our main characters wake up already in a survival situation... and things only get more horrific from there. Here though, we also get almost disaster movie type setup with a bit of the "normal life" of each of our crew members before they are sent on this particular mission, and this both helps ground the characters and serves as a touch of foreshadowing of how the tale plays out. The horror is real and visceral, but of a type that if you have your internal "blood filters" set, you may envision at least somewhat less carnage than others who envision the more complete "Mortal Kombat experience". And as horrific as the physical horror is, the psychological horror here could be said to be even worse - yes, this book goes *that* deep. Ultimately, if you like any of the franchises I've named here - and I'll even drop in the original, space based, Aliens movies here - you're likely going to enjoy this book. If you like visceral survival / horror type space tales, you're going to like this book. Again, I truly do want a sequel here, so I'm hoping either Wellington is already planning that or sales/ outcry is enough that we get one. Very much recommended.

Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
