Danger, mystery, romance with a single dad, enemies to lovers, and a cop story on top of it. Count me in. Janie is an attorney and Sean is a Detective who gets put in protective custody after an incident while in court. In custody, they work together to investigate what is happening and fall in love. This is a new series and is off to a good start. The plot was good and kept me entertained with lots of action. At times I did feel the romance was too quick but still enjoyable. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series. I would recommend this book for a good mystery and romance.

Ever since Jane moved to West Oaks, she’s been heralded as the top defense attorney to hire as well as one of the “Forty Under Forty to Watch.” She’s reached a high level of success, but with that success comes new enemies. Enter Detective Sean Holt, who ever since they met, has had an intense hatred for the attorney – and that hatred seems to go both ways.
Detective Sean Holt has not had the easiest transition to being part of West Oaks PD. On top of moving from LA to a small town and going from investigating gangs and drugs to less nefarious cases, he finds out he has a son who now is under his care. But with the help of his mom, Sean finds his transition a tiny bit easier. Except Jane Simon is about the most cold-blooded, conniving woman he’s met, and he has no idea what to expect from her.
When a mutual case investigating the largest financial fraud crime in West Oaks history pulls Sean and Jane to the county courthouse, no one expects the attack to come. Gunshots and the attempted murder of Jane’s client and the two “enemies” turns into something much more personal. Putting aside their intense hostility, Jane and Sean are more determined than ever to discover who the mastermind behind their attacks is and just what that means for the case Jane and Sean were involved with.
***************
Written in dual first-person POV, “The Six Night Truce” follows Detective Sean Holt and defense attorney Janie Simon as they investigate who is trying to kill them while also uncovering the secrets behind the attack against the county courthouse.
This was certainly a suspenseful read. I honestly enjoyed it for the mystery that was the financial fraud case and how it linked to the attack at the courthouse, and I definitely wasn’t expecting that ending. As for the romance, it felt like a bonus. It was a well-built romance based on mutual attraction and hatred formed from misunderstandings. Basically, Jane and Sean hated each other because they caught each other on bad days and just never attempted to retry.
The author does a great job building the characters up and giving them unique (but realistic) backstories that led them to work really well together as love interests. Sean being a single dad and relying on his mom to help raise his son due to the stress and long hours associated with his job, but also his motivation to provide a better life for his son than what he had growing up, was really inspiring. Yes, single dad romances are common especially for first responder or military characters, but there was just something about this romance and the way it was written that I didn’t mind the common trope. As for Jane, she was a strong, determined woman who relied on herself to get what she wanted and needed to succeed thanks to the advice of her gran. But she also has a softness to her that makes her loveable for the moments where she isn’t as strong or willing to put up that front to protect herself. She hasn’t had the best life, but she’s making a name for herself and proving to herself that her past isn’t what defines her.
The romance just worked so well between the two, and they both filled in parts of the other that were missing. Plus the chemistry between them was palpable. The spicy scenes definitely made for a great read. Yes, everything was cheesy and cliché but it worked for the characters and the story the author was trying to deliver. If I wanted a fully suspenseful thriller or mystery, that would be the genre I chose instead of a romantic suspense.
Sometimes, the mystery kinda fell to the backburner, but that was okay considering the romance needed some build-up and development. The pacing of the story was sometimes slow and clunky, but I think it evened itself out by the end and made up for the draggy parts. And the twist of who the culprit of the attack was wasn’t all that intense, nor were any of the revelations that come from their confession all that surprising, but I think it all worked well.
If you happen to like romantic suspense novels with enemies-to-lovers and single dads, I think this is a pretty good read to check out. And this book kinda made me want to check out other Hannah Shield novels to see what else I will enjoy from them.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Really good read. I loved the suspense and action. I loved both Sean and Janie, they are very well-developed, both with interesting backgrounds and they make a really good power couple. The story that keeps you on your toes. Who did it?
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for NetGalley
Six Night Truce is my first book by this author. The description sounded intriguing and it did not disappoint! Steamy, suspenseful and full of twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages. Hannah Shield has definitely become a must-read author for me.
This is my first experience reading something by this author and it definitely won't be my last. This was an all around great read with suspense, action, romance, and enough steam to fog up your kindle! Janie and Sean, always on opposing sides, are always clashing. He is a cop and she is a defense lawyer, an unlikely pair for sure. Brought together by unfortunate circumstances, they need to find a way to put their differences aside and work together to find out who is after them.
The story was exciting and fast-paced and I was pulled in from the very start. The characters were intriguing and interesting. They had wonderful chemistry and I enjoyed getting to know them and following their story. This was a well-written, enemies to lovers romantic suspense and is the first book of the series. I enjoyed this book and plan to look up more of this author's work!
I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Whoa. Mind blown. Iykyk. This book hit drama hard and fast. And in some incredible ways. Hannah gave all the emotion. Sadness, fear, anger, frustration. But also love, adoration, happiness, comfort. Janie gave it her all. Literally. She just wanted to give the help that she was never offered as a child. Sean just wanted to figure out how to be insta-dad. He loved his son and just wanted to keep him safe. Make sure he was happy and loved. And the action packed story line? Wowza. Janie showed just how tough and hard she is while Sean learned that he really just can't do everything on his own.
All in all, I think this book was just a perfect mix.
I received an arc from NetGalley in return for an honest review!
This was an exciting, fast paced romantic suspense that had me turning pages until the end! It had the feel of a blockbuster movie. Usually I’m a little skeptical of insta-romances as they are too unrealistic for me. (You know, that indescribable feeling but the MC’s know they love each.) I felt this story was more credible in the pacing and evolution of their relationship. Loved both MC’s. I loved their witty banter. And their chemistry was hot! I am definitely adding this author to my auto-click list!
Janie and Sean are from two different sides of the law. She is a defense attorney and he is a detective. The day they meet or I should they are supposed to meet in court with her client there is a shooting and people decide after her office and his home are both ransacked that they should be placed in a secured location. After they decide to make a truce they also decide to work the case together and find out why people are after the two of them. It does take Sean a while to trust Janie but after she picks a lock and saves him he begins to trust her. Overall a good book there are moments when Sean is a jerk but by the end, he starts coming around. A good book with plenty of action and mystery. The characters are good as well.

Review: During my recent reading journey I always though I loved second chance romances the best, but after this book MAN I am falling hard for Enimies x Lovers. This book was the perfect amount of action and banter. I had no idea how it would end because the obvious guess with the MC’s but the actual plot I had no idea. It was an easy read and it was the perfect length I think and all the information you would got during the start of the book was all needed through out the book. Very enjoyable
This is the first book I read from this author and I’ll certainly be interested in reading more. The description and the cover caught my eye originally but once you start reading, you’ll be totally engaged in the story and the characters. I liked Janie and Sean. They both had misconceptions about each other and that’s what made the book so good. I was caught off guard by the who at the end which made it even better for me. I received an advanced copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
I got this book in exchange for an honest review. I didn't know the author before this book and what a mistake. Especially because I'm a big fan of romantic suspense. And her books are full of this trope.
It was an enemies to lovers and a perfect one, because they really hate each others in the beginning. Even when she's hurt she hates him. She needs some times before changing her feeling. They have a strong connection and the two of them want the truth. To know what happened they call a truce.
I like the fact that the bad guys were after the two of them and not only Jane. It was refreshing because in some books it's always after the girl.
One trope I like more than romantic suspense is the single dad trope. Sean is a great dad with Henry and he loves him so much.
This book got me hooked since the first pages. I wanted to know more about the story and wanted to know the truth. I got my suspicions about two characters. And only one of them were the right answer.
This book is pretty realistic and it's great.
The relationship between Jane and Sean is a great one and a realistic one.
I want more books (one about Murphy and one about Shelby).
This book was amazing!! This is book one in a series. If you have read Hannah’s Bennett Security series there will be a lot of familiar faces - I personally love when authors add that touch. I have never read books by Hannah Shield but I am interested in her backlog now!
This has everything I love - super steamy enemies to lover PLUS suspense that lets Sean really flex his alpha maleness (my favorite) and Janie what a strong independent women she is.
Janie is a defense attorney and Sean is a former LAPD detective now small town cop. Ememies, Imma right??? After a court house shooting they need to figure out who is after them. It was a suspenseful romantic ride.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. These are my own thoughts and opinions.
This is the third book I read by Hannah Shield, and I liked all of them. I enjoy the writing, the relationships, and the stories. We have lots of love and mysteries to solve!
There is a case in court - the defense attorney and the police detective in charge of the investigation can’t stand each other! Bring two armed men shooting at them, and everything might get different.
If being shot at wasn’t enough, her office and his home get ransacked, and bombs are installed.
This brings Jane Simon and Sean Holt into protective custody - together. As they won’t stay put and need to investigate who wants to kill them, they agree on a truce of six nights - the duration of their stay together.
Besides all I’ve already said, I liked how strong Jane and Sean were and how well they complemented each other.
From what I’ve read, I think Hannah Shield might have the same problem as me with couples having to break up in the second half of the romances. Why?!? When you are in a relationship, if a problem appears and you quit, you will never have a last-longing relationship. I’m okay with people needing some time alone to figure out stuff, but it’s together they have to solve the problems. And this is one of my favorite parts of this book. They might not get it at first - and what an entertaining story they gave us with that - but they get there sooner or later. m
Another part I loved was Sean’s relationship with his son and mother. They are a team and help each other even if the story that got them there wasn’t ideal.
Learning more about Jane’s and Sean’s pasts brought a whole new perspective to what we were reading. Great job!
This book is a mixture of crime, mystery, love, sex, friendship, and family, with a dash of suspense.
4.5*
Wow, Just wow! The Six Night Truce by Hannah Shield is the first book in the West Oaks Heroes Series and the first I have read by Ms. Shield. I am disappointed only in the fact that I did not find her sooner!
This book has it all! Mystery, thriller and romance! We ALL need a Sean Holt in our lives! Sean is sexy, driven and well-accomplished. He is a former Marine who is currently a police detective. He's a single Dad, his Mom is his best friend and he is a true gentleman.
And the main female character, Jane, how refreshing. She is simply a bada$$! I loved reading a book with a strong female character. Jane is an attorney, workaholic who doesn't need anyone, but Sean and Jane come to find out that while they don't need anyone else they are better together.
I could not put this book down. I was engaged throughout the entire book. I even had to slow down at the end because I knew I would miss Sean and Jane once I finished this book. I can't wait to see where this series goes!
Well written and suburb execution this book will not disappoint!

The Six-Night Truce
By Hannah Shield
The first book in the new West Oaks series! I’m so excited we’ll get to meet more Hannah Shield characters! We met Jane and Sean in the previous series and it’s great to see Jane get her HEA!!! I loved Sean and Jane together, they were explosive. Sean Holt is the lead detective at the West Oaks PD, he’s aggravated at Jane Simon the defense attorney, usually always, but today specifically over her client. He’s an accountant and is supposed to be spilling the beans on a wealthy and entitled con man who frauded hundreds of people out of their retirements. The defendant is stalling and waffling about turning states evidence against this villain. Jane is equally frustrated with Detective Sean and his growly attitude. A shocking incident at the courthouse has Jane and Sean on lockdown in a small room together.
The danger to them that follows has them entering into protective custody, Jane, Sean, his mother, and his one-year-old son. They have less than a week to resolve who is trying to kill them and her client. I loved watching the tension build between Jane and Sean. The relationship Sean has with his mother and son. How easily they accepted Jane (Janie to her friends). There was a natural progression from enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, it made the story flow seamlessly. The action was suspenseful and intense. They stayed true to their characters throughout the story, and it made the HEA that much sweeter. I was caught off guard by the ‘bad guy’ but should have expected having a twist in Ms. Shield’s story, she very good at surprises. I am so excited she has started this new series which is a spin-off of her Bennett Security series. I’m eager to see what’s next! I received an arc of this book through NetGalley, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Janie is an attorney and Sean is West Oaks police detective and they never got along. They always fought on opposite side in the court and off the court. This day didn't change anything until they were trapped in the court house while shooting was happening. Sean's detective instinct took over soon as shooting started and they were trapped together. Even they were trapped together, they were arguing until they were forced to stay together until shooting was solved. Shooting seems to follow both of them and they are threatened and it is too close to their loved ones so they decided to stay together.
Close proximity brings their feelings to the surface and they still have solve their threats. They must work together while on the run. Will it be just while they are together or will they continue...
This author was new to me and this was great start of a series. I can't wait to read the next one.
The Six Night Truce is a very entertaining story with some nice twist and turns to the plot the writer has produced a true romantic suspense in ever since. Action packed romance mystery and a little humor mixed in. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow this book was an unexpected fun read. You meet Jane Simon and Sean Holt in the Bennett Security Series. Janie is an attorney and Sean is a police detective. They had the whole enemies to lovers trope down right from the beginning. This book was a little steamy but could have used some more spice in my opinion.
** Thanks NetGalley and Diana Road Books**
Enemies in courthouse who cant stop ogling each other. One incident make they working together on the investigation. Janie and Sean still figure it out who is the puppet master behind all these complicated case. Their passion to each other flying hard here, mostly they are wory for each other safety because this henchman dont care who get hurt.
Yes there are instant attraction but author build their conection slowly, they are listening, understanding, open each other heart. That formula make sexy time so intimate.
Thank you to NetGalley for provide this book, it is pleasure to review this book.

This book was amazing! It’s a little suspenseful and intriguing. I didn’t want to put this book down! This was my first book by Hannah Shield, and I will definitely be reading all of her others! I normally don’t like crime or suspense books, but I love a good romance. This book has both, and to my surprise, the suspense wasn’t boring, but actually kept me wondering what was going to happen next! And the romance and connection between Sean and Jane seemed like a hate relationship at first, but in the end, love always wins!
