First off let me admit that this is not my usual genre. But this beautiful cover caught my eye and I had to read it.
This is basically a modern Romeo and Juliet. With a twist. It is either realistic fantasy or Romeo is a Cullen. But I have so many unanswered questions about this story.
Actually, it is too fantastical for me. I actually would understand it more if he was a vampire. But he’s not. He’s Romeo.
Amazing cover though!
The Hundred Loves of Juliet is a beautiful love story! Evelyn Skye gives us a unique spin on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and I loved it.
From the get go we meet Helene, who is strong, upbeat and working on reclaiming her life after moving to Alaska. We hear about her vignettes and her horrible specimen of a soon-to-be ex husband. Then we get to meet Sebastian. He is a little more reluctant in the beginning as he guards himself, but there is that instant recognition he and Helene have if each other.
Their romance was not as instant as their connection, but it was so refreshing that they took time and got to know each other in the present and let go of what past they could. I loved that Helene kept pushing Sebastian to be with her now, and that they were about to find happiness.
This was such a sweet, yet simple story, but I found myself in tears at points, and I was whole heartedly rooting for Sebastian and Helene.
Thank you Evelyn Skye, NetGalley, and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Del Ray for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Despite my not being the biggest fan of the romance genre, after reading The Hundred Lives of Juliet, I can absolutely recommend it to people like me and romance lovers alike. The hook for me was the premise that the main character Helene was actually the reincarnation of Juliet Capulet, who has run into Romeo Montague in present times. He has somehow managed to stay alive (and only visually age about a DECADE - men get all the breaks!) since those days in Verona. He's changed his name, vocation, and location a few times since then and is now known as Sebastian Montague.
First of all, I love Romeo and Juliet! I was obsessed with the play in high school and have seen all the movies many, many times. Skye roped me in right away with a scene featuring Romeo and Benvolio preparing to attend the Capulets' ball. Written in modern prose, this previously unseen interaction enhanced my existing R&J knowledge and really made me want to read more. From this early scene, we learn of the characteristic chemical reaction the star-crossed lovers experience upon each meeting, establishing their status as the ultimate SOUL MATES, and it's carried through the book perfectly. They recognize each other instantly regardless of Juliet's current incarnation - it's a powerful thought that you can know someone no matter the time spent apart and despite even death.
My favorite part came toward the end, when they work together to vanquish the enemy and live happily ever after, maybe. (No spoilers!) All I'll say is that I just really enjoyed how this character developed; she grew so much that she was the one who figured out what needed to be done and carried it out, with minimal assistance from Sebastian and friends. It was an excellent example of great character development and was definitely empowering for Helene.
For all you hard core romance fans, do not despair. There are sex scenes! I am a tad squeamish in general but these were well done, integral to the story and steamy. I might just see what you all like so much about them. ;) Overall, I think this was a brilliant reimagining of a classic love story.
***Eternal thanks to Random House and Net Galley for the ARC!***
I loved this retelling of Romeo and Juliet with such a neat twist! I was hooked on this book from the very beginning and didn't want to put it down. It was fast paced and flowed so well.
One of my favorite movies is Age of Adaline and this book definitely reminded me of it. If you are also a fan of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, then you will love this
Great read! Thank you for the opportunity to read and review Netgalley!
3.75/5 - love the premise of reincarnated Juliet and immortal Romeo. I was hooked from the first chapter, and enjoyed the writing style. But I would have liked more closure from the epilogue, like maybe if had taken place a few years later. The ending wasn’t very satisfying for me.

Thank you netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a decent read. If you're a lover of the classic tale with a spin, I think you'll enjoy this.
3/5 ⭐
Yet another 5 star read for this year!
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing for an ARC of this book!
I jumped in head-first to this book and literally could not put it down. The pining expressed by Sebastien was so sweet to me, yet frustrating at times (because just love her already!!!) I liked the storyline of Helene writing her book, but I wish there was more development on that in the end.
The soulmate trope is one that I will always love, and this book did it perfectly. This was a short read for me but I could have read another 300 pages of their love story!
If you loved The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I think you would adore this book. The concept is similar while still being completely fresh and new.
I know the formatting will be a little different once the book is released, but I would have liked the flashbacks to be separate chapters instead of on the same page as the ending of a chapter. I found that a little confusing with the perspective as well. If it was just a little more clear, that would be perfect!
The Hundred Loves of Juliet by Evelyn Skye
I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley for review. My opinions are my own.
4/5 stars
To say that I loved this book would be putting it lightly.
I. Am. Obsessed.
This book is the perfect mix of time travel (?ish) and love story.
It is so beautifully written that I was invested in the characters from the very beginning. My only complaint was that I felt it could have been longer. The historical pieces could have been expanded.
Love this novel!
I wanted to enjoy this but overall found the story, characters, and plot to be something not what I was longing for or one that I would pick back up.
I love the way Evelyn Skye writes a love story. And this did not disappoint.
I was worried the ending wouldn't be satisfying (when you set up a premise like this, I always need a clever ending) but the ending was perfect. The deeper into the book I got, I found myself caring less about cleverness and more about a happy resolution - that's how invested I was in the character's happiness. There are a few corny lines, I will admit, but otherwise I loved it. It reminded me a little of Tessa Bailey's Bellanger Sisters books, so if you enjoyed them you’ll love this too.
3.5/5 stars!
this was a cozy magical retelling of romeo and juliet. this book has a really unique aspect. what’s more crazy than your childhood imaginary friend coming to life?
i really enjoyed this book! it had me stressed out the entire time because i was scared of the ending 😭 i love time travel books so this was a very fun read.
the only thing i didn’t like was the story dragged a bit. i found myself getting bored a couple times. the ending was a little disappointing as well. i was expecting more.
i would recommend!! this was a really cute lighthearted read!!
thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!!
Although The Hundred Loves of Juliet failed to impress me, but Evelyn Skye's writing is so beautiful, and I'm a sucker for gorgeous writing. I found the characters to be compelling in their own ways. I also enjoyed how the plot developed. The novel does an excellent job of capturing sadness and the act of simply being. The book highlighted the importance of seeing people for more than superficial qualities and more so about what's inside. I appreciated how the author gave the two major characters more dimension by including minor tidbits about them and their lives. The book, in my opinion, dragged on for a little while, but it was nonetheless good.
I’ve always thought the idea of Romeo and Juliet reincarnating was interesting so I was immediately hooked when I read the summary of this book. The story is okay but the middle section dragged on for a bit longer than it needed to. I felt like the characters could have been fleshed out more but I enjoyed my time reading this book.
While I really liked the concept of this novel, I think the execution just wasn't for me. Repetition of slightly varied stories irks my brain, and this involved quite a lot of reliving the same general plot. Though Evelyn Skye's writing is quite beautiful, The Hundred Loves of Juliet missed my mark.
3.5 out of 5 stars! Very interesting spin on what could have been a typical classic story of Romeo and Juliet. I was able to predict the ending but it kept me interested and entertained. I liked that the author added in small details for the two main characters which provided extra depth. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing the e-ARC for an honest review.
The Hundred Loves of Juliet tells the tale of an immortal Romeo and a Juliet that dies over and over again from tragic accidents only to be born once more. I have to say that I immensely enjoyed this book; I wouldn't say that I am a fan of Romeo and Juliet and was a little skeptical going into the book but it is probably one of my all time favourite books. I really enjoyed the vignettes and seeing how all of them connected. I also found the whole swiss bank business interesting. The characters were engaging and I liked how the story unfolded. If I have something to complain about it's the ending, I can't say I liked how there was no proper explanation to the tragic endings. I refuse to chalk it all up to bad luck, there has to be more to it. Overall it was an excellent read and I give it 5 stars.
I really enjoyed this story! It was a short sweet romance and really enjoyed it! Even though this was marketed as a retelling, it felt like a new concept and I really appreciated that!
The Hundred Loves of Juliet requires far too much suspension of believe for me to enjoy. The constant jumps in time, the brief tales of just happening to be at all these major tragedies. Not a fan.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC for an honest review.
This story is the epitome of ‘short and sweet’! Although I read it in just one sitting, I can still feel a warm buzz when thinking about this book at the time of writing this review, a week after finishing it. I wonder if this is a similar feeling to that honey-wine aftertaste every time Sebastian and Helene met…
The story follows Helene, an aspiring novelist who has had some important losses in her life, as she retreats to Alaska to escape an abusive relationship and focus on writing her novel. Her world suddenly turns upside down when she meets in real life the main character of all her stories: Sebastien.
This book reminds me of stories written by Cecelia Ahern as it brings some “magic realism” to our lives. Although the main plot line is quite fantastical, the emotional development of the characters feels very realistic and quite relatable.
I really enjoyed this book and will be looking forward to any more publications by the author! Thank you NetGalley and publishers for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley and Del Rey for granting my wish to read and review this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Hundred Loves of Juliet is a twist on Romeo and Juliet if they did not die at the end of their tragic love story. Helene moves to Alaska in order to get away from an old job, a cheating ex-husband, and to figure out her life before going on a trip with her sister. When she arrives, she meets Sebastien and a strange sense of deja vu and connection forms between the two star-crossed lovers.
The Hundred Loves of Juliet reminds me a bit of a lighter version of The Age of Adaline and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Sebastien and Helene are Romeo and Juliet. Sebastien continues to age at a very, very slow pace whereas, whenever the two fall in love, Juliet dies within days and she is reincarnated as different women across different time periods. Sebastien has realized he doesn't want the curse between them to activate with Helene so he tries to avoid her but fate has other plans...
I really liked the beginning portion of the book. I couldn't help but feel sorry for Sebastien, who is almost immortal. He remembers everything between each of the Juliet's: when they meet, when they fall in love, when she dies, and is reincarnated but with no memory of the last version of herself. I preferred to read from his point of view, most of the time, because his side is what kept me engaged in the story.
I didn't care too much for the in between chapters, when we see the pair meet in different time periods and with different names. It's a nice touch but it felt a little jarring to go back and forth between past and present. Helene is a writer and she has always had a version of Sebastien in her head. When she meets him for the first time, she is realizing he is not imaginary but of flesh and bone. I liked Helene and how she handles her losses. She was realistic and relatable. There is a dash of heart and soul in their love story and a lot of that comes from finding out about Skye's personal hardships in the afterword.
However, as the story continues, my attention span began to wane. I feel like the book has a great beginning, an okay middle, and a slightly disappointing end. With that in mind, I do still think many people will enjoy this book and what Evelyn Skye has written.
