Although not one that grabbed me initially, I warmed up to it after the first few chapters.
Well written characters, each with their own something going on, certainly not one that is struggling for plot twists.
By the time I finished it, I realised just how much I enjoyed it. I hadn’t noticed just how invested I was, in all of it.
All in all, a slow burner but really good once it started ramping up. A great read and one I’ll be recommending.
Thank you to the author. The publisher and Netgalley for the arc.
Neat Twist..
Three days away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life in beautiful surroundings. A chance to breathe, to regroup, to regenerate and to really get to know each other. That’s the plan. But is it? Abigail promises Pete that the idea will work, that the in-laws will simply have to get along and, who knows, maybe have something in common with one another. Things are about to get messy. Nothing is as it seems in this twisting psychological suspense with an engaging premise and a neat twist.
Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and Laura Wolfe for the opportunity to read an advance copy of THE IN-LAWS, to be published 26 January 2023. The cover said somebody had a secret. I think they all did! This suspense thriller kept me turning pages and glued to the book. I wasn’t sure who was going to win out in the end! The characters were believable and real; the twists and turns never ceased. A great read. #NetGalley #Bookouture. #TheIn-Laws #LauraWolfe
Abigail and Pete are engaged and are embarking on a wilderness trip with their parents in an attempt to bring the families closer together. While the trip starts off on a good note and the parents are making an effort to be friendly, the trip does not go as planned. Sinister events start happening almost immediately. The campers are plagued by scary sounds, strange individuals, and missing vital items. Before long, a tragedy occurs and all campers will not be returning home. This novel has suspense, unexpected events, and is told from alternate points of view. I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this book. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
This thriller got me on the edge of my seat from the very first page. The plot twists and new discoveries definitely kept the story interesting and moving seamlessly.
Abigail and Pete’s relationship is the focal point of the story however, Abigail is the main character. She is such an interesting character, the way she sees others and the way her mind works were fascinating to read. At times I loved her and at times I hated her and that was the most beautiful thing because not all main characters are lovable.
While reading, I had an idea to write down theories of what I thought was happening. It was such an amazing idea, it kept my mind going and thinking from every angle and every possible scenario. I definitely suggest you do the same thing.
Nothing I love more than a thriller that can actually make me gasp. Abigail just wants her parents to get along with the parents of her fiancee before their upcoming wedding, so she has an amazing idea to organise a family hiking trip through the forest to essentially camp in the middle of nowhere…what could go wrong? 🙃
Once you get past the first few chapters in the book, there are surprises in almost every chapter. I was suspicious of most of the characters and was always wrong when their truths would come out later on. Almost every chapter ends with a cliffhanger so you just have to keep reading…and that ending! - didn’t see it coming at all! I definitely need to check out Laura Wolfes other books after reading this one 🤩
With her wedding imminent, Abigail decides a great way of getting the two sets of parents together is by organising a three-night camping experience in the Hiawana National Forest led by an experienced guide. The two sets of parents are poles apart socially and from the first day there are moments of disagreement. Then things begin to go wrong. Items disappear from back packs, food gets ruined, and Abigail is sure they are being followed. Immediately, she suspects Trent, Pete’s brother, someone with mental health issues who Pete has upset by not asking him to be best man, and giving him an usher’s role instead. When unexpected tragedy strikes, it brings a whole new set of concerns and suspects.
Narrated principally from Abigail’s viewpoint, but with additional input from several of the other characters, The In-Laws is cleverly written. I have previously read several other novels where a group of people are stranded in the wilderness, but this one really does grab you from the moment they set off. Given the different characters, it’s easy to see there will be tension and conflict and there is plenty of that. And there are spooky moments too. Lots of them.
I had no idea how the story would conclude. As it turned out, it was more complicated than I first thought. Not just one plot twist, but several. Recommended.
My thanks to Laura Wolfe, Bookouture and Netgalley for an ARC of The In-Laws in exchange for an honest review.
✨BOOK REVIEW✨
The In-laws
By Laura Wolfe
What a rush! Laura Wolfe knocks it out of the park AGAIN!
I have read a few books by this author previously, and have loved them! This one was no exception. In fact, this one may be my favourite so far!
What I love about Wolfe’s writing style is that it’s so perfect. The flow and rhythm of her books is top notch. Characters are always written out well, the storylines are always captivating and get me hyped. This one was so well done, I couldn’t set it down, and actually devoured this in about 4 hours.
Filled with lots of gripping twists and turns, you’ll be biting your nails throughout.
This one is out on January 26th so be sure to pick up a copy. If you haven’t read her other books yet, be sure to check them out as well. She’s become one of my favourite Authors, and we need to see more of her here on bookstagram!
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
What a wild and wonderful thriller! A young engaged couple take their parents on a 3 day adventure campout as an ice breaker before the wedding. The two sets of parents could not be any different! The group sets off on an arduous hike along some treacherous trails and things go from a bit creepy to down right crazy! Well developed, unlikeable characters drive this tale. Written in multiple POV, the short chapters make for a quick read. Set in the beautiful, upper peninsula of Michigan, the beauty juxtaposes the tragedies that unfold. Fast paced with an ending you won’t see coming!
A slow build of twists and turns and a great shock ending, some awful love to hate characters, good descriptive scenery re the forest and an easy book to read,
So this was an interesting twisty thriller. I didnt expect the major twist at the end. A definite recommend. Loved Abigail.
Thanks Netgalley and Bookouture.
All my thoughts and opinions are my own and aren't influenced by anyone else.
This book was unhinged! It was almost fun but hard to follow. I love an unreliable narrator but this was all over the place. Length is good for a quick twisty thriller but I think there should be some character development that isn’t just a thriller troupe.
From the first page I felt drawn into this story. It was well written and very interesting however it didn’t get more interesting as the story progressed. I had hoped it would eventually have me on the edge of my seat but this was not the case. The story was solid and the characters were interesting but there did seem to be something lacking. When the final twists came I was not really shocked.
All in all, it was a good book but sadly it lacked the WOW factor. It’s a quick read so I would certainly recommend it, if that’s what you are looking for.
Thank you to Netgalley, Laura Wolf and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book before the public release date, in return for an honest review.
This book will be released on January 26th, 2023

What starts as a simple trip away with your parents and future in-laws turns into something more sinister in this page turning novel by Laura Wolfe.
Abigail has a loving relationship with her parents and is desperate for her relationship with her in-laws to be similar, but fiancée Pete doesn’t talk much about them, so Abigail engineers a wilderness holiday for them all to get to know each other better. Getting to know each other better, means getting to know all about each other and this is a thriller in the wilderness that has you longing and wanting for more.
I loved this book especially since it took place in Michigan where I’m from!!
Abigail and Pete are engaged and just want their parents to get along! Abigail plans a hiking and camping trip hoping to bring the families closer. They hire a guide to help them navigate the National Forest. Soon the cracks begin to show and things go wrong quickly. Medication goes missing a strange man crosses their path and Abigail swears she sees a shadow following them. When one of their members end up dead they begin to point fingers. It appears everyone is hiding secrets but who has the biggest secret? A secret they are willing to kill to keep it hidden? Told through different POV in alternating chapters, we get different angles to the story which I felt added to the mystery.
The in-laws by Laura Wolfe
4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book had me hooked from the beginning! I thought the story was going one way and the twists kept coming. By the end I was really surprised how it all ended. I liked how most of the book was from Abigail’s point of view but you do get a couple other characters pov mixed in. All the characters seemed to have secrets and I didn’t know who was good or bad. None of the characters were very likable which I liked because it made the story more interesting. I also liked the eerie setting of the book in the forest. And the drama between the two families was very entertaining! I definitely recommend this book!
Book Review: The In-Laws by Laura Wolfe
Abigail and her fiancé embark on this camping trip with their parents and a tour guide and as can be expected in a thriller, things start to go awry. Their parents are complete opposites and it seems like no one is going to get along by the end of this trip. Combining families through marriage can be really tricky, and it’s clear that this isn’t going to be easy for them. But then there are ominous messages left at the campsites and someone goes missing- it’s clear that this isn’t going to be a feel-good family-bonding trip.
I loved the first half of this book- it gave me major No Exit by Taylor Adams vibes- except they were trapped in the woods instead of snowed in at a rest stop. Until I was 50% in, the story is told completely from Abigail’s perspective. I haven’t read a book with single POV in a while and I thought that’s what I was going to be getting. Then the POV starts changing to other characters in the book so as to point out people’s secrets and deceptions. The first twist was good, it made sense as to why this trip had been chosen by Abigail to begin with. But then my attention kind of wandered after that. As twist after twist popped up, it felt unrealistic. Overall, I enjoyed this read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this eARC!

This one was a fun domestic thriller/suspense. Abigail and Pete are engaged and want their parents to get together after a one time meeting between them before, that didn't go too well. Now they have a hiking/camping trip planned for them all so they can get to know each other better before the wedding! During the trip, the families clash, and strange things start happening. Then one of them winds up dead.
Told through different POV in alternating chapters, you are kept on edge, wondering who is guilty and who is telling the truth. This pulled me in right from the beginning, and I didn't predict what was going on. This was a clever and unique plot, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own
This book took me a day to read!! While it was a little on the slower side, I loved the storyline and how it tied all together towards the end. It was a little predictable for me but nonetheless it was a great read!! I think the fact of the whole in the woods and retreat was pretty unique and a really cool idea!
I really enjoyed this book.
The storyline was unique and kept you interested.
The story had multiple POV that i really enjoyed.
This book had twists and turns that were unexpected.
I felt like at one point that i had it figured out but then i was completely shocked during the last chapter.
I am grateful for being able to read this ARC and really enjoyed this title.
Will be reading more from this author.
Would recommend this book for people looking for a new thriller.
