Abigail and Peter are in the midst of planning their wedding, they decide to take their parents on a weekend getaway trip to the great outdoors. Things go wrong as soon as the trip begins! This is a slow burn mystery with a few twists. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy.
Twisty, unpredictable, breathtaking thriller! Wow! Amazing plot spins that continue throughout the entire novel. Totally worth the quick, enthralling read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this amazing ARC.
You NEED to read this book! I read lots of thrillers, and the plots can get repetitive after a certain point. I haven't read a book about inlaws going on a camping trip. It's perfect because planning weddings and dealing with families is already a nightmare; add a bunch of secrets and creepy woods into the mix, and you have lots of drama. My only constructive criticism is that the cover doesn't match the story. It's a beautiful cover but not the best fit. Thanks for the advance review copy.
Very good. Lots of twists and turns and a good ending. Looking forward to reading other books by this author.
I have to admit - the idea of a “family bonding three day wilderness camping trip” ranks high up on my list of horrible ideas for my parents, in-laws, and my partner and me. Back when we were engaged, I seriously believe that my partner would’ve broken off our engagement - even before both sets of parents got together. But, it’s an interesting plot device, so for that alone, I give Laura Wolfe’s “The In-Laws” an interesting setting point. I greatly liked the inclusion of Darla - the use of the tarot, crystals, and palm reading I found nice touches - especially when contrasted with Kristen, the psychiatrist who trust science. This book is told mainly from Abigail’s point of view, but other characters have a chapter here and there to help explain things. While unreliable characters are not my favourite, once I realized that seemingly everyone had their own hidden reasons for this trip, the unreliableness ceased mattering. As the twists and layers of motivation complexities become exposed, it gets a bit crazy - but in a good way. Red flags abound and, especially toward the end, things either unravel or get more entertaining. It’s a bit of a ride, one that I’d probably go on again.
I wasn't hooked right away. It took a little while for this story to puck up. Once it did though I devoured it. So freaking good. Suspenseful, captivating, full of tension and mystery. Great characters too.
This was an OK book. Not necessarily addicting or different from the other ones I've read but it was bearable to say the least.
Abigail dreams of the "perfect wedding." But her family and her future husband's family are not in good terms, thus, she made plans on getting them away to bond. But, sometimes, things don't go the way we like them, right?
It was alright. The tension was there, there was a bit of mystery but it lack the "wow factor" that I was looking for. The whole narrative was pretty average.
Still, thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
Characters are very well written, and I raced through this book. Gripping from the start and everything that a psychological thriller should be. Dont take my word for it.......read it ! You wont be disappointed
Many thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC 5 WELL DESERVED STARS! You will want to read this in one sitting because you are on the edge of your seat the entire time… I was mad at life getting in the way!
I've read many of her previous books and with each one I get so sucked into the story.
The In-Laws by Laura Wolfe certainly didn’t disappoint!
I couldn’t put it down once I started it and found it a fast paced and well developed. story.
The storyline flowed very well and set you up for the twists towards the end.
Wolfe did an amazing job of giving the audience a clear picture of the setting.
Another heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat..

What a great book, I thought at first it was a bit slow but how wrong could I be? the storyline just got better and better and it turned out to be a fast-paced thriller read.
All the characters were so well developed and I just loved how the story enfolded with their background information as the book progressed, it kept me on the edge of my seat and what an ending, just brilliant.
I hope to read more from this author in the future and thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
What a book! I stayed up til 5am reading this and didn't regret one minute of it. Its got so many well written twists and turns, noone is who you thought they are, you are constantly having to reevaluate everything you've already read once the newest twist happens and it was just a sheer delight to read. The wilderness setting had the most eerie and sinister atmosphere and you really don't have any clue what's going in until the big reveal. The characters are well written and so believable. The pace is kept up throughout and the plot is always moving forwards. A must read. I will be downloading every book ever written by Laura wolfe immediately!!
This is another well written thriller by Laura Wolfe that delivers an amazing ending.
There were plenty of twists throughout the book that kept me guessing and I found the characters engaging and intriguing.
An enjoyable read overall and one that I’d recommend.
In The In-Laws by Laura Wolfe coming out in January, bride-to-be Abigail Cates and groom-to-be Pete Mitchell have planned a bonding activity in Hiawana National Forest in Michigan with both sets of parents: Kristen and John Cates and Darla and Kenny Mitchell. The parents met once for dinner at a restaurant that did not go well, so Abigail is hoping three days in the woods with a scout from Team Wilderness would help everyone get better acquainted.
The going is rough as the refined Cates and the coarse Mitchells interact. Pete has distanced himself from his parents as their ways embarrass him what with Darla being into the mystic world and his father an ex-con who Pete never told Abigail about. On the other hand, Abigail is close to her parents; Kristen is a psychiatrist, and John runs his own commercial real estate enterprise.
But not is all that it appears to be. Abigail has actually plotted with the guide, Liam, to help her plan a very different experience than the one the others expect. Terrifying things begin to happen in the forest, and the campers are ready to pack it in on Day One. Things only get worse, leaving one in the party dead.
In the end as everyone’s secrets unravel and Liam has gone for help as one of them has an injury and cannot possibly finish the hike, how will the campers be rescued as they are now down to their last granola bars, and it is only Day Two? Is there a murderer among them or did the victim simply have an accident? The book comes to a startling end and a revealing deception, with one more death occurring before this twisty psychological thriller comes to a close.
Laura Wolfe, a lover of animals and nature, has written a total of six adult thrillers including We Live Next Door, Her Best Friend’s Lie, She Lies Alone, Top Producer, and Two Widows. She also writes a YA mystery series. The author lives in Michigan where her thrillers are set.
My review will be posted on Goodreads starting December 20, 2022.
I would like to thank Bookouture, an imprint of Storyfire Ltd, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in return for an objective review.
Abigail and Pete are getting married. In an effort to bring their parents together they go on a three day camping trip in the National Park, led by a team building tour guide. The hike starts off ok but soon one thing after another goes wrong. Medication and other items go missing, food is ruined and there is a shadow stalking the group. One of them ends up dead and the group starts pointing fingers. Who could have done this and why?
I love books set in the woods and while I wouldn’t say this one was particularly thrilling, it was entertaining. I kept trying to predict who the killer was but ended up being wrong which I liked.
The In-Laws is available January 26,2023.
Thank you to netgalley and bookoture for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! I didn't expect that!! so many crazy twists! This book had quite a tale to tell!! It had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery and so many crazy twists and turns that I did not expect!! The storyline was very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! I definitely enjoyed reading this one! It sent chills for sure! Don't miss out on this one! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Oh my word this was so good!!! I loved the set up - a couple about to get married going off on a bonding trip with their respective parents. And what a bunch of oddballs the parents turn out to be. The perfect recipe for conflict if ever there was one! The setting was also perfect - a remote park, off the beaten track. And nothing, I repeat, nothing is what it seems in this story. That's what makes it so good. I absolutely loved it and stayed up way too late last night so I knew what happened.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Fantastic read!!!!!
Abigail and Pete...these characters come alive on the pages of this book by a talented and gifted author from one of my favorite publishers. Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for this electronic copy to review. It is a page turner...it is a novel that is fiction but reads like nonfiction. Secrets...intrigue...what will happen next? Who is guilty? Who is innocent? Do not miss this book. Curl up in a comfy chair in front of a blazing fire...enjoy an afternoon of mystery. Be ready to be surprised.
I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end. I found it so hard to put down.
The writing is amazing. It kept my attention, with twists, turns and who-done-it, and what if or was it or wasn’t it. This is something you’ll read and wonder and will thrill you to complete!
I can highly recommend this to those who love suspense, thrillers, mystery and tons of psychological mind bending thoughts as you read it.
I want to thank Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for a review which I’m glad to do on something so amazing! Now I cannot wait to read more from Laura Wolfe!
This was my first book I read by Laura Wolfe, but it won’t be my last.
