The author's writing style is both conversational and inspiring, making it an enjoyable read for women seeking guidance in their professional journeys. Braun effectively dismantles outdated norms and provides practical tools for women to redefine their approach to leadership. The emphasis on ditching perfectionism, seeking validation from within, and challenging the inner critic resonates strongly, offering a blueprint for building confidence and fulfillment.
Braun's book stands out with its actionable advice, such as the 16 things she forbids you to say at work, providing readers with tangible steps to implement positive changes in their professional lives. The incorporation of real-life stories adds a personal touch, making the content relatable and inspiring.
The playbook format adds an interactive element, encouraging readers to actively engage with the material and apply the strategies in their own lives. Braun's expertise as a certified executive coach and CEO of Something Major shines through, providing credibility to the insights shared in the book.
While the book primarily targets women, its message of empowerment and redefining leadership transcends gender boundaries, making it a valuable resource for anyone navigating the complexities of the modern workplace. "Something Major" is a recommended read for women looking to chart their own course to success, dialing up confidence, and reducing burnout in the process.
This is supposed to be “the new playbook for women at work”, but unfortunately, I didn’t find it to be that new or exciting. Maybe it’s just because I already read a lot in this genre (“Lean In”, “Confidence Code”, “Corporate Rehab”), but this felt like it was trying to repackage a lot of other works without having its own perspective. The author is an executive coach, and opens with a joke comparing work burnout to sex, but the humor in this instance and others fell flat for me, and felt forced and contrived. (The constant references to movies like “Mean Girls” and “Legally Blonde”, or jokes about purses, felt downright demeaning.) As I got deeper into the book, i started to realize that there were very few personal stories, and instead, the author focused on repeating stories about celebrities that she clearly hadn’t interviewed herself but was just repeating from other books / articles – not the depth of insight I was looking for. And maybe it was just because the book didn’t hold my interest enough to read it all in one sitting, but it really lacked cohesion – it was lots of little bits of other people’s research dumped into one book, with no throughline or actual framework. I was so excited about this book, but it just didn’t live up to its initial promise; I would only recommend it very junior women who don’t yet have any experience in the workplace.
I have been looking for books specifically for working women and this was a good one! Randi Braun has a great grasp on how things have historically been for women in the workplace and how we can move forward. I appreciated her examples, and especially liked the section on self-care. There are several aspects of this book I am implementing in my life. Solid 4 stars.

This book is aimed at helping women achieve both personal and professional success. Braun's writing is engaging, candid, and inspiring, making "Something Major" not only an informative read but also a powerful call-to-action for women to step into their power and redefine the way they approach their careers. This playbook is a must-read for women at any stage of their professional journey, and it promises to leave readers feeling invigorated and ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
A very useful book for women of all sorts in all types of occupations. The conversational tone is engaging, and while some of what is presented is "common sense" info that we already know, it's useful to have the reminder for how to apply it. The "I forbid it" list is fantastic.
I was actually really struggling to find my voice in my leadership role. This book helped so much with my confidence. I thinks this is a must read for all professional women, whether you're trying to move up that ladder, or just want to learn how to set yourself apart. Something Major is a great self-help book that cuts out the fluff and gives real applicable advice.
I had the opportunity to read Something Major: The New Playbook for Women at Work by Randi Braun, via NetGalley.
Unfortunately, I could not keep my interest while reading and could not finish the book. Even so, from what I read, this book appears to provide a comprehensive approach to professional development and offers valuable advice on how women can succeed in their career paths. However, as a woman working in business, I found the book to be a bit lacking in relatable concrete examples and felt that some of the advice was too vague for my specific tech field. Regardless, this book may still be useful for other women looking for general support and guidance as they pursue their career aspirations.
The topic of women in leadership roles is often discussed, the questions surrounding decision making still remains!
This book sends a powerful message and reminder that women are just as capable as men! There should not be any confusion about women in positions of power, just as there isn’t with men, it’s simply a given!
Why do we need this book?
Something Major: The New Playbook for Women at Work is like a handbook, a positive reminder to all women in a managerial position and also a reference to keep close by for reference!
There are many females in positions of power, both politically and in business practices, lets continue to celebrate and support strong women!
Thanks so much to the publisher, NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this powerful book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you to New Degree Press and NetGalley for an electronic advanced readers copy of this book.
Something Major: The New Playbook for Women at Work, tackles the topic of women in managerial positions, and how they have to navigate the environment without using the outdated rules that never worked for anyone. Being a female manager denotes something different than a male one, and Randi Braun tries to dissect this. As someone who manages a team, I was interested in hearing what she had to say. It is interesting to hear that even women in high levels of power still have their doubts and go through imposter syndrome.
I am not one to read business books or self help books, but I'll be keeping these new rules in mind when I work.
It offered a little bit of new concepts, but overall, there's nothing new in it. The writing style of the author was also too simplistic and boring for me, but I can acknowledge that this could be a good book for readers who want to read this kind of writing style.
If you are like me, who happens to be a woman, and who happens to be someone who made it to the top of the corporate ladder. Sitting directly in front and beside all men in monkey suit on each and every conference, meetings and business travels. You will appreciate this book. It speaks truthfully about what's really going through a woman's head. It is mind boggling that this book just came out now. This is a must-have for every "LADY BOSS" out there. This is really...SOMETHING MAJOR.
