When a cat sitter and a hockey nerd meet it's not exactly all roses and sunshine.
Miles Thorn is in need of a cat sitter to take care of his mom's pet while he's visiting her in the hospital. When he discovers the truth about her health it's time to call in the calvary.
Kitty Hart is an expert in managing pets and understanding who they are. A fun, quriky woman who sees beneath the layers and can connect with even the most challenging felines.
With witty banter, plenty of chemistry and a lot of laugh-out-loud moments this slow burn is the perfect summer read.
Sometimes people come into your lives for a season or reason, for Miles and Kitty they will discover that their connection is deeper than a physical attraction. If they can both let go of their past then they can unload baggage they've been carrying around.
A sweet, slightly spicy romance with great character arcs, a plot that keeps moving along, and a few extra dollops of fun will leave you one-clicking Helena's backlist for more.
A Love Catastrophe is Helena Hunting’s latest steamy romantic comedy that is hockey and cat-themed. It is an opposites-attracts story told in dual points of view. It can easily be read as a stand-alone although it may tie-in with one of her hockey series.
20-something Kitty Hart is an internet famous cat trainer, running her own cat-sitting business as the Kitty Whisperer. She is clumsy and very introverted, preferring the company of her family and best friend, Kat, and animals to dealing with other humans. She is also stuck in grief over her father’s sudden death 10 years earlier.
30-year-old Miles Thorn is a statistical analyst for a professional hockey team (think Moneyball) on a trial contract. He’s trying to prove his value to the team while also dealing with his mother’s sudden decline in health. When his mom is hospitalized and he must travel to away games, he hires Kitty to care for his mom’s demon cat. Miles doesn’t like cats and is allergic to them, Prince Francis, a hairless Sphynx. When Kitty arrives to meet him, he tackles her to the floor when he sees her pull out a water gun.
Both Kitty and Miles are socially awkward, but Kitty is worse. She takes care of Miles when he goes into anaphylactic shock while cleaning out his mom’s house, and their mutual dislike changes into like. She helps him accept his mother’s Early-Onset Dementia diagnosis and process his guilt from his younger brother’s death when he was 11. Kitty realizes that she and her mom both need to move on from their grief and quit being co-dependent.
A Love Catastrophe is a well-told uplifting story about a young couple overcoming adversity and working towards a happier future. The scenes with Miles’ mother are realistic but treated sensitively and positively. Kitty is a true animal lover and always puts their well-being first. Some of her escapades are hilarious. The chemistry and banter between Kitty and Miles is off-the-charts. I had a hard time putting this book down and highly recommend it. A Love Catastrophe contains no profanity but some graphic sexual scenes.

A super cute book about Kitty, a cat whisperer who runs her own cat sitting business. She has a meet disaster with Miles, a dog lover who needs help with his mom’s cat. They get to know each other and become friends. Friends who are attracted to one another and later become lovers.
The parts with the cats and other animals are cute, but there is a serious side to the story. Kitty and Miles bond over family losses they experienced when they were younger and his mother’s dementia diagnosis. There were a few open door scenes and no third act breakup, which was a nice change of pace.
This was an easy read just in time for summer! Take this to the pool or the beach if you enjoy:
🐱friends to lovers
🐱cats and cat puns
🐱 grumpy x sunshine
Kitty Hart, the "Kitty Whisperer", has been slowly expanding her personal business as a cat sitter, receiving sponsorships, free treats and toys, etc. Her personal life has been stuck since the death of her father 10 years prior. She's lived at home to help her mom and enables behaviors that keeps them both from being able to move forward.
Miles Thorn is in need of some help as his mother wanders off in the middle of the night; another episode of early on-set dementia. He hires Kitty to pop in on Prince Francis, his mother's Sphynx (hairless cat). Though the two start off a bit rocky, their mutual attraction continues to bloom, and they find that they are able to help each other manage past (and present) guilt/trauma, etc. Their vulnerability with each other allows them to find exactly what they need to move forward together.
I enjoyed this book but it dropped a bit in rating for me to 3.5 stars because our cat expert suggested using a spray bottle on Prince Francis in the beginning (and a few other things later on) and it irked me because this will only serve for your cat to be scared of YOU.
Sometimes you just need a little Helena Hunting writing in your life- this goes along with her quirky, and witty mix for a rom com. Characters who seem to be mismatched wind up being the perfect match and the journey for their romance is filled with humor and quite simply- great writing. I honestly laugh out loud when I read Helena Hunting Rom Coms, and find myself sending quotes and clips to friends while reading. Love that she creates characters that are out of the norm and have something unique about them that you wouldn't expect to find in a romance book. I think that just adds to the appeal- doesn't feel like something that's been written about over and over. Unique and spunky.
My cat lady heart is so happy!
I've read quite a bit by this author and this one might be my new favorite by her. And not just because I love cats.
This was so funny. I found myself laughing out loud a bunch. Kitty and Miles were so adorably awkward that it was endearing how well matched they were.
But this book was a lot deeper and dealt with a lot harder topics that the cartoon cover might make you believe. Some trigger warnings are dementia, death of a parent, and death of a sibling.
I loved how Miles and Kitty really connected through their own losses. The connection and chemistry was on point. But that doesn't surprise me based on the author's previous books.
This is an author I think just gets better and better. I look forward to more from her.
This author could write a grocery list and I’d read it. I found myself not being able to put this down after the first chapter.
A Love Catastrophe is a fun, interesting story and I enjoyed the read.
Kitty. Sweet, loved, maybe a little stuck after her dad's death. She's close to her mom and sister in the nicest way. Miles. Sigh. Super smart and sexy, he's taking care of his mom as she's in the hospital to find out what's going on with her. He needs a cat sitter and that's how the two cross paths. Their first encounter is not a positive one. This relationship doesn't get off on a good foot. He's not a fan of his mom's cat Prince Francis or cats in general, owning a huge dog himself. Kitty's life is cats. Kitty's talent with cats is soon apparent as is Kitty and Mile's attraction.
There was enough action in the story to keep me interested. The characters were interesting and showed personal growth through the book. A viral video proves a near crisis for Kitty's confidence and business which added interest to the book. The ending was very satisfying.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This was a light and easy, happy, sometimes silly love story. Miles needs a cat sitter, and her business is called "The Kitty Whisperer". I mean....you know how that sounds lol. And her name really is Kitty. Aside from the fact that she sometimes replaces words with like cat phrases(?), I liked both the characters a lot. They felt pretty real to me, especially how they sometimes felt insecure, or nervous, and were clumsy. It was relatable. And a fun read.
This was a really lovely love story. I enjoyed the premise of two hurting, stuck people (a cat lover and a dog lover), find each other at the right time. There was a nice, natural progression to their relationship. It didn’t feel like insta-love at all. I especially liked that the third act problem that came up had nothing to do with their relationship, which was really refreshing. Even though there was a bit of growing to do on both of their ends, they seemed to always have a mature, non-toxic relationship (both between the main characters and their families). The family drama was very relatable. Towards the end of the book, it seemed to imply there could be a second book with a couple of the side characters that I think would be a fun read as well.

A Love Catastrophe is a feel-good, sweet, romantic story about Miles Holden and Kitty, the Kitty Whisper. Kitty is internet famous as a knowledgeable, cat-loving, professional cat sitter if you will. Miles reaches out to her when he needs help taking care of his mother's cat Prince Francis (who could probably have a novella all about him and his antics). Miles and Kitty didn't hit it off and honestly, it took me a while to warm up to Miles but he eventually won me over (stick with him; he is worth the journey). Kitty and Miles begin a partnership taking care of Prince Francis and working on his naughty behavior. As they open up, a friendship develops and one night when Kitty needs Miles, he is very glad to help her out. The books had several different facets that I really thought brought the whole thing together. Both Miles and Kitty were dealing with guilt related to their parents. Kitty was really hanging onto the past and was kind of stuck but there were several things that happened during the book that helped get her moving again and even helped her career-wise. I also liked how supportive Miles was when Kitty was hurting emotionally. He did everything in his power to either shield her from what was going on or to make things easier for her. This story also shows the positive side of not going the "norm" and being confident enough to be yourself as well as poke fun at yourself, which Kitty does. I felt happy and giddy after reading A Love Catastrophe.
Kitty has a successful cat-sitting business, the Kitty Whisperer, which Miles utilizes when his mother is temporarily hospitalized. They find themselves pushed together in many (rather humorous) circumstances and start to indulge in their mutual attraction. But she's a cat person, and he's a dog person... Could it ever work?
This book had all the heart and good vibes of a Helena Hunting book, just covered in a blanket of quirky and awkward. I have to say the author really committed to the theme here - there are A LOT of cat puns. At times it felt like a bit of a shtick and bordered on cringey, but if you can look beyond that, there is lots of goodness hiding below in the form of tender and charming characters with good development, some sensitive issues that are dealt with compassionately, and plenty of laughs.
Thank you to Forever and NetGalley for gifting me with an ARC to review. I enjoyed it!
I thought this book was going to be light hearted and whimsical. And to a degree it was but it also punched you right in the heart. I think this book did a nice job of talking about grief and how it can affect your life and those around you.
Kitty runs her own cat sitting business and Miles is in need of a cat sitter while his mom is in the hospital. At first they seem to clash but as they get to know each other and realize that they both went through serious tragedies in their lives they start really getting to know each other. They help each other grow and move on and I really loved that aspect of this book.
The Love Catastrophe by Helena Hunting is a cute and quirky contemporary romance with fun puns and a unique cast of characters. Kitty Hart is a cat whisperer hired by Miles Thorn to care for his mother’s beloved cat as she faces long-term care at a facility. Kitty and Miles couldn’t be more different, and their meet-cute isn’t so cute. But once she sees Prince Francis, the troublesome feline, Kitty jumps at the chance to care for him even though she isn’t a fan of Miles. However, the more she gets to know Miles, the more Kitty realizes she might have prejudged him, and they slowly begin falling for each other.
There are a ton of cat puns at the start of the story since that is part of Kitty’s schtick, and they were purr-fect additions to the story. But once Miles gets to know her as more than a cat caretaker, Kitty’s cat persona drops, as do most of the puns. Kitty and Miles’s relationship progresses nicely from strangers to friends to more. Theirs isn’t a high-stakes, risky relationship filled with obstacles, but some of their obligations, insecurities, and emotional struggles, especially Miles’s stress at his new job and his mother’s health issues and Kitty’s stagnation and fear of change, stand in their way.
The story isn’t all lighthearted romance. It delves into grief in both Miles and Kitty’s pasts and details how that pain defines their present. Both lost loved ones when they were young, and those tragedies deeply affected them. These heavier themes contrast with the lighter, comical scenes. Miles and Kitty have a few laugh-out-loud scenes that totally made me chuckle. Kitty and Miles also have great friends, and I have a feeling many of them will have their own stories in the future. And a special shout out to Prince Francis for being my favorite character in the book! That cat is a rascal, and he stole the show in so many scenes. I’m not a big cat person, but I totally want a Prince Francis!
I do wish there were a bit more chemistry between the pair, though. Also, it took a while for me to warm up to Miles. He wasn’t the most likable character for me at first, and I didn’t love how he was with his mother for most of the book. That being said, he grew on me as the story developed and his character grew, and I think he and Kitty were good influences on each other. And the way he defended and supported Kitty when a social media situation threatens her livelihood was fantastic.
This is a purr-fect read if you like cat-tastic feline puns, awkward and funny friends-to-lovers romance, a great cast of secondary characters, and some deeper, more emotional themes. Thanks to Forever Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
It's an idealistic romance, but it's also a fun read!
This movie takes a quirky likable female character and a supportive golden retriever of a male character and puts them together with no miscommunication or conflict. Is that a little bland? It can be, but it can also be refreshing.
What this book does right is include the families of our main characters. This adds a level of depth to the relationship the main characters are forming and makes the stakes a bit higher with regards to their prospective futures.
I also really like that the third act conflict in this story doesn't involve miscommunication between the two main characters or a breakdown in their relationship. The conflict doesn't make you question the intentions of the character, it allows them to grow together in their relationship, which is great for the believability of their romance.
Is this an earth shattering, change your life kind of romance? No. Will you have fun reading it? I really think you will.
And you're a cat lover? Even better!
I love Helena Hunting and had high expectations going into A Love Catastrophe. No surprise, she delivered and fantastic story. I like my romance to have a healthy dose of comedy and this had so many great moments of humor. Kitty Heart is a cat whisperer, but you do not need to be a cat lover to really enjoy this wonderful character. A Love Catastrophe is a wonderful example of rom-com done right, with its balance of light and deep topics, characters that are complex and relatable, and flowing story.
Thank you NetGalley and Forever Publishing for the advanced reader copy. This is my honest review.
This book was so fun! I loved Kitty and Miles. This book was so well written and the characters were fantastic.
This book is paw-sitively delicious! Hunting delivers another fun and intriguing set of characters who draw you in and glue you to your Kindle! Kitty is wonderfully delightful as creates a world and profession out of her passion. Kitty embodies her name: warm, sweet, and engaging like a kitten but not afraid to let out her claws if needed. When Miles Thorn enters her life, he's as prickly as his name denotes. He's in an impossible situation of managing his mom's cat, a burgeoning career, and his mother's health. Definitely not the best first impression on Kitty.
But the beauty of Hunting's characters is finding out what's beneath. In this case, what's under the thorns and claws. What she gives us is well-developed chemistry, a slowly unfurling plot to keep us enticed, and just enough humor to make us chuckle out loud.
As usual, Hunting's clever naming of her characters brings new levels of depth to her characters. And I would be remiss if I didn't give a massive shout-out to Prince Francis for stealing any scene in which he appeared. He needs an award for Best Supporting Character - 5 gold claws!
A quick read that flies by! There are some laugh out loud moments in this sunny vs grumpy romance - starting at the very beginning when Miles is looking up the Kitty Whisper website at work. Kitty Hart has just the right quirk you expect with Helena Hunting’s characters. If you are looking for a light-hearted rom-com, I recommend this book.
A Love Catastrophe was a lighthearted, easy summer read. Low angst and high on laughs that will be perfect for a relaxed Sunday afternoon.
A cat loving woman and grumpy stuck-with-his-mum's-cat guy meet and cue the hilarious interactions. I'm not really a cat person and don't understand those people who are obsessed with them, but I couldn't help but love Kitty. Miles was just one grumpy sweetheart that I was swooning over. Their attraction was palpable and their story was so fun to experience.
This was a heartwarming quick read, that I would definitely recommend if you're in the mood of a palette cleanser with something sweet, fun and easy.
