A Love Catastrophe is a sweet comedy about two people who meet because of a cat. Kitty Hart is the Kitty Whisperer. Her cat sitting service is growing steadily but she feels like there is more out there. Miles Thorn is in need of someone to help him out when his mother lands in the hospital. He does not like cats and has to deal with his mom's sphinx cat who is a royal pain in the butt. They start off on a bad foot but realize they have a lot more in common than they realize.
I did really like the book. It started a little slow but then really found its footing. The characters are fleshed out. You really feel for everything that both Kitty and Miles have gone through. This book touches a lot of family loss of both a parent and a sibling. Dementia is also a big part. Helena addresses and writes all of it very well where it is not overdone or under explained.
I really liked that the major conflict between the characters that you get in a book takes place at the beginning rather than at the end. Miles really grows as a character and Kitty is just as sweet as can be though sometimes I wish she was more confident. I do like that she seems to always put her foot in her mouth while talking to Miles. It made me laugh several times.
Thank you to NetGalley, Helena Hunting, and Forever for the e-ARC of this book. My review is my own opinion.
Kitty Hart is a well known (internet personality) cat pro known as the Kitty Whisperer. Miles Thorn is a NHL analyst whose mom is in the process of being moved to assisted living and needs someone to take care of her cat while he figures out the game plan. Enter Kitty. They get off to a terrible and awkward start, but they say opposites attract and maybe they can find a happily ever after with each other.
I am a huge Helena Hunting fan. Her hockey romances are my favorite! Her small town romances get me every time. I was so excited to see she was coming out with another book. Unfortunately this book didn't do it for me. It's supposed to be an enemies to lovers romance, but I didn't find Miles to be the grumpy enemy he was supposed to be. Kitty was this overly sunshiny character, but I found her disdain for Miles in the beginning to be unwarranted. I didn't like Kitty as a main character. She was a bit cliche. This overly clumsy character who managed to put a cat pun anywhere she could find it. She felt too cartoony for me. Miles was a decent male lead, but I felt he was a bit boring. I liked that they bonded over their losses and feeling responsible for what happened to each of them. The side plot of their families was the most compelling part of the story.
Thanks to the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review. This book releases 6/13
I was excited to read this one but if felt a little too cheesy for me. The FMC seemed immature and the puns were too much. I just couldn’t get into it.
3.5 stars. While I love a story with puns, this book at times got a little too aggressive with the cat phrases and puns. The story was good up until close to the end. I was happy there wasn't a third act breakup, but I didn't like the misinterpreted animal video and scene. Miles and Kitty were cute characters, and I really enjoyed the back story with their families including managing with a parent who has dementia. This part was well written. Overall, not my most favourite by Helena, but still a book I will recommend. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for a copy to read and review. All opinions are my own.
Honestly, what an unusual book - I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not. It started off very rocky before simmering into something much better, but it couldn't quite work its way up to 4 stars for me. As a longtime fan of Hunting, I'm fully aware that she writes a variety of vibes and tropes, and I liked some of the concepts at play in this one. It's a (super) quirky, cat-themed comedy paired with a heavier exploration of dementia, caring for an ill parent, and the aftereffects of grief. The first third is WAY too over-the-top in its quirkiness, with SO MANY cat-related puns and references. We've got Kitty the Cat Whisperer and Kat the Cat Café owner, cats learning how to talk and use a toilet, a dog person feuding with a cat person (and he's allergic to cats!), and that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's too much. Way too much. I actually DNFed this pretty quickly before deciding to give it one more chance, and it definitely does smooth out in the back half. I enjoyed it a lot more on my second attempt. In fact, part of me considered a 4-star rating, but it's just too extreme in its tonal shifts and there are too many easy-to-identify issues.
The story follows Kitty, a woman who makes a living as a cat sitter. While many people scoff at her profession, she knows there's a lot more to cats than meets the eye. She's also internet famous, and has built up quite the reputation. So when she's hired to take care of a cat whose owner is an insufferable jerk (who doesn't seem to like cats!), Kitty isn't sure what to think. Turns out, the cat isn't actually Miles' - he's got his hands full dealing with his mom's dementia diagnosis, and he's doing the best he can to care for her cat. As someone who knows what it's like to deal with grief and complicated family issues, Kitty can empathize. The two strike up a tentative bond that feels like friendship with the spark of something more, and it's not long before they're growing closer.
Let's talk about what I liked for a minute, because there was a decent amount of it. As always, Hunting's writing style is easy to devour, and that made this a quick, bingeable read. I also loved that Miles is a hot nerd - he wears glasses, he crunches numbers for a living, and he's not great with women. He's actually kind of a sweetheart when he's not overwhelmed with all of his new responsibilities. Kitty is... well, she's a lot. Her personality is much more extreme in the first half, but I think a lot of the puns had mellowed out by the end. I definitely liked her a lot better in the back half. Then there's the tone of the book. As someone who loves a rom com with deeper, more complex elements, I can see where Hunting was going with this. It did not stick the landing, however. The juxtaposition between quirky and heavy was abrupt and jarring, with too many mundane details about caring for cats and caring for parents. There's even a whole lesson on how to use lip stain, which... I just wanted more romance, I didn't want that. So there's a lot of potential in the storyline, but much of it remains unfulfilled.
A fun opposites attract novel with- cats! Miles really doesn't like his mother's beloved Prince Frederick but she's got some health issues and, after spotting her on social media he hires Kitty, She bills herself as a cat whisperer and she's a bubbly fun person who loves animals. Miles- grumpy. They progress from an awkward first meet to you guessed it friends and then romance. And along the way, Miles lightens up. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A light fast read to make you smile.
This was a very funny and cute read,
I hearted all the catty things. A very good read.
This author never fails to dissapoint
Miles Thorn needs help in the worst way. He has just started his dream job, analyst for a pro hockey team and his mother has been hospitalized after wandering the streets in her pajamas. Part of his job means traveling with the team, so he needs someone to take care of his mother’s sphinx cat Prince Francis while she is in the hospital. Enter Kitty Hart, the Kitty Whisperer. Their first meeting is more of a meet awkward than a meet cute, and they both find each other annoying. But with his mother’s diagnosis, he realizes that he needs to work with Kitty on a longer term solution. This is a romance with a lot of humor, but also some heavy issues (death of a child/brother, dementia, and death of a parent). The story goes a bit overboard with the cat puns, and Kitty’s physical clumsiness seemed overblown. But this was an enjoyable book overall.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.
I am a huge fan of Helena Hunting's stories but this one kind of missed the mark for me. I wavered between 3 and 4 so i'm giving this a 3.5 rounded up. The problem with the story for me was the heroine, Kitty. Written in a way where she was a little wacky (this author specializes in that but doing so in a relatable often fun way), she was a little too juvenile and silly for me. So many cat phrases (ha, catastrophe, I get it!) along with so much bashing of dog lovers (yes, I took offense) and I was pretty put off on her within about 30% of the book which made it hard to come back for a dog lover. I also didn't actually feel the chemistry as strongly between her and Miles, which is a departure from her usual books where the steam rises from the pages. But overall, a cute story, lots of fun moments worthy of a laugh or chuckle and definitely a cat lovers' catnip kind of book. Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for an early read.
I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really really enjoyed this book. It is such an easy and breezy romantic comedy. I loved that both of the main characters had constant foot in mouth disease and said literally the first thing that popped into their heads.
One slight thing that I'm also really happy about is that at the beginning of the book, Kitty is almost constantly talking in cat puns (ex: Bless Mew) and once the two of them start to really connect those puns disappear real fast. To me the puns were not cute or funny they were ridiculous so I'm happy they stopped.
I tried really hard to connect with this one, but I couldn't. I am a huge Helena Hunting fan, but this one fell a little flat. I was expecting more of a feel-good romcom but there were too many heavy topics (and no trigger warnings) for me to really get into the characters and their relationship. While I love a good cat pun, I felt that some parts were over-the-top cringy. Sorry, I couldn't enjoy this one more.
I would describe A Love Catastrophe as a cozy romance. It’s funny, cute, and full of cats. Cat haters beware!
A Love Catastrophe follows Kitty, a cat sitter, and Miles as he searches for someone to watch his sick mother’s cat. Kitty and Miles are forced to work together to care for his mother’s Sphynx and don’t get off on the right foot.
Kitty and Miles have instant chemistry despite their mild dislike of each other based on first impressions. By no means would I describe A Love Catastrophe as enemies-to-lovers, but there is some animosity.
What makes me describe A Love Catastrophe as cozy is not only how cute the story is as a whole, but both Kitty and Miles are quirky and insecure in their own ways. These quirks and insecurities permeate the story as Kitty and Miles work to overcome them together.
One other aspect of the novel I thoroughly enjoyed was the setting. A Love Catastrophe is set in Toronto! There aren’t enough romance novels set in Canada.
If you’ve read Hunting’s novels before you know her spice is excellent. A Love Catastrophe is by no means her spiciest novel, but scratches the itch.
Overall, A Love Catastrophe is an incredibly cute and funny romance that will have readers swooning for not only over Miles but also for all the animal love.
Helena Hunting is a comfort author of mine so being lucky enough to receive ARCs of her books is truly a dream come true for me. Thanks so much to Helena, Netgalley, and the publisher for this ebook. I LOVED it. If you are a cat person, or have cat people in your life, this book is exactly for you.
A Love Catastophe follows Kitty, the Kitty Whisperer (she runs a business taking care of cats, cat-sitting, etc.), and Miles, a data analyst for the city’s NHL team who hires Kitty to take care of his mom’s cat after she is diagnosed with dementia. Their first “meet-cute” is anything but cute. It’s downright hilarious, setting a precedent for the whole book. I laughed so much throughout this book and really loved the relationship develop between Kitty and Miles. They both have pasts filled with grief and guilt so seeing them discuss those times in their life and handle the burdens those periods left them with really helped me connect with these two characters. This book is all about personal growth and moving on while retaining Helena’s classic humor and banter. Both Kitty and Miles them were just absolutely adorable and funny and real.
I really love Helena Hunting as an author- her range is phenomenal and her books never fail to bring me joy when I’m reading them. A Love Catastrophe is purr-fect, witty, and so entertaining. Just another reason for Helena Hunting to be one of my favorite authors.
A Love Catastrophe is a sweet, feel-good rom com with spice and laughs.
A lot of the situational humour in this book is a little far-fetched, but it’s still enjoyable. It’s cringe-humour, particularly in the beginning–so if you’re a fan of awkward sitcoms like The Office, this book might hit right for you. I’m not going ot lie, but I did groan a few times! It felt like Dad humour at parts, which can be a hit or a miss for most.
I love books where the hero and heroine dislike each other instantly, and Miles definitely does not make a good first impression! While the book is a rom com at heart, it does attempt to touch on some tougher topics, which I found made the book a little depressing at times. Miles’ mother has recently been diagnosed with dementia, and his brother died when he was only a little boy. Kitty’s father died years ago, and her mother has never been the same.
Hunting has a delightful writing style, and she really leans heavily on the cringe-humour when describing things. This is particularly the case for the dialogue between the two main characters. Honestly, the way that certain characters would say things was the highlight of the book for me. I know I’m not supposed to quote an arc (as the text might change in the final copy), but this line is too good to pass up. After Kitty says something awkward, she says “I wish I could pluck that last sentence out of your ears and shove it back into my word hole.” LOVE IT.
This book leans heavily on the cat themes, so if you’re a cat lover, this book might be just up your alley! Kitty is the “Kitty Whisperer”, which, of course, earns some awkward jokes from the male characters in the book. (Fortunately not the hero, otherwise I might have had to DNF on the very first page!) Prince Francis, Miles’ mom’s cat, is a real demon, which results in a lot of hilarity in the story.
All in all, this is a sweet and light book with some triggers (already mentioned), resulting in a fun beach read!

thank you NetGalley for my copy of A Love Catastrophe!
i love Helena Hunting’s books, they feel like a warm hug & also i end up laughing at some point as well . this book was just the same !
i am not too big of a cat person, but i loved the insight of kitty being a cat watcher & how they meet . so miles is a data analysis for the NHL & his mother is having a hard time after an episode that leads to her dementia diagnosis . this brings in kitty because he needs someone to look after his mom’s cat !
these two we’re so cute because they were a little awkward & the slow burn was so good . the characters bonded so well & both of their trauma was related to each other in some way & seeing them help each other through it was great .
This book is for animal lovers and specially people who love animal puns. There are several throughout this novel.
Kitty is a cat sitter and influencer and Mile’s works for the NHL. They meet after Mile’s mom starts to have a series of health issues and he needs someone to watch her “demon cat”. Enter Kitty. She’s unique and quirky. They begin to bond over a shared love of animals and things in their past.
This book was just not for me. The spicy scenes were kind of cringe. Example: the phrase “bingo button” is used at one point. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.
Parts of the book were very sweet, fun, and heartfelt. However, the book felt disconnected and I found myself skimming to make it to the end.
When they shared some of their past together it read more like trauma dumping than connecting. It was hard for me to get on board with this book. Again, just not for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
4 Star review A Love Catastrophe by Helena Hunting
This was another well written, entertaining story from Helena Hunting which I enjoyed. A Love Catastrophe is Kitty Hart and Miles Thorn’s story and it ticked a number of boxes for me.
Have you ever heard of a cat whisperer? I haven’t, but that is what Kitty is known as so when Miles needs someone to take care of his mothers’ cat Prince Francis (aka the Gremlin).
His mother needs long term care as she has dementia and it is confronting for Miles. This was handled with respect by Ms. Hunting and added an emotional side to the story.
Miles and Kitty are so quirky and different, he is a bit of a grump where she is sunshine and light and on paper they should not work and yet they do. It was heart-warming to watch their relationship progress.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
DNF. This story is just not for me. I really tried to get into this one, even getting half way through. But I just couldn’t connect. It felt silly. Unromantic. I’m a cat person, but this was a little too over the top. And a cat sitter who squirts cats with a water gun?! Nope.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy from Forever Pub via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If you like cats, the most adorable love story mixed with hockey and lovable characters this one is for you! Helena Hunting has such a way of writing that makes you just root for all of the characters, even the supporting ones. I can’t think of a single character I disliked. Kitty and Miles are precious and I loved their witty banter. There was just the right amount of steam too. I loved how the book tackled some tough subjects too and focused on different ways of healing after grief. I definitely recommend it!
Perfectly cheesy, and honestly a few too many cat puns for my liking. And I say that as someone who loves puns and adores cats. It's the mispronunciation of words to make them cat pubs for me #EnglishMajorProbs. Not to mention the cutes-y innuendos got to be a but much for me.
Kitty (first bad cat pun) owns a cat sitting business in Canada. She gets a request to watch a cat for a short period of time while the owner is in the hospital. She meets the cat owner's son, of course he's hot, and chaos happens, sometimes literally. There wasn't a third act break up, which I appreciated because there wasn't a need for it. It felt a little shallow at times, but what can one expect from a contemporary romance.
