I really, really wanted to love this one more than I did. I tried! I think I just wasn't the target market for this one. If you love cats, have a cat, or are a "crazy cat lady" I think this one is up your alley. However, I did like the grumpy/sunshine aspects, the business bits, and the quirky side characters a lot. I think part of the problem for me, too, was the spice. A big thing in romance for me is the spice, so if that falls flat, or if the characters don't have as much chemistry, then the rest of the book kind of falls flat for me. However, I still recommend this for any cat lovers out there! I think your perfect romance is waiting in the book!
Did I read this book purely because there is a cat on the cover? Yes, yes I did. Don’t get me wrong, I love Helena Hunting but the cat got me 😂. All the cat puns have kept me laughing and forced my mind straight into the gutter.
Our heroine Kitty Hart is adorably awkward and owns the cat sitting service Kitty Whisperer (I laughed every time read that). Miles, the MMC is in need of a cats sitter and the hilarity, witty banter and sparks fly from there!
I enjoyed the grumpiness of Miles and Kitty’s sunshine + quirky personality. Prince Francis, the cat that brought these two together, is hilarious and is a gnome destroying kitty-hole who redeems himself by giving expert snuggles.
The cat portions of this book were generally light but there were also heavier topics, like dementia, loss of a parent, loss of a child/sibling and the stress of handling that.
Overall this was an enjoyable enough read but some parts felt a bit slow and other parts just fell flat.
I really enjoyed the cat humor and connection between Kitty and Miles but some parts of the plot, like the third act drama left me disappointed.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the arc.
Such a cute (and yet steamy) story. I laughed out loud, and oohed and awed. I devoured this book, and love Helena Hunting as an author!
!This was a super cute love story! It is definitely heavy on the cat puns, but if that appeals to you, this would be perfect. It was light, fun, and enjoyable.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Kitty, an actual kitty whisperer meets Miles when he needs someone to watch his mom's cat while she's in the hospital. They start a friendship and lots of hijinks ensure.
Okay, this book was very, very, very corny with a lot of cat jokes and silly conversations that made me roll my eyes a few times. The name she called her lady parts was actually ridiculous and I almost dnf'd the book.
Although I enjoyed parts, I would only recommend this book to true cat ladies.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc.
"My favorite days are the ones where I wake up with you beside me."
A Love Catastrophe is a reminder of why I fell in love with Helena Hunting's writing in the first place. Jam-packed with her signature humor, quirky characters, and absolutely addicting banter, this book is an absolute hit.
I loved Kitty and Miles so much. Two extremely awkward characters with sizzling chemistry - say no more! Their relationship was playful and oh-so steamy, and I couldn't keep the smile off my face while reading. I really enjoyed all the side characters, especially all the crazy felines, and would love for some of them to get their own stories as well! I really loved this book and can't recommend it enough!!
I enjoyed this book! I previously read a book by this author that I did not care for, so this was a nice surprise! The characters are well thought out and developed. There is a lot of humor, but also a lot of heart. It took me a while to get into it, but I found it finished strong. Kitty and Miles had good chemistry. It's worth a read!
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book. This was a really fun easy read! I absolutely adore Kitty right from the start! She has the most amazing attitude and her and miles already feel so real. I really enjoyed how straight forward these characters were and learning about the family struggles they faced. The chemistry was great from the very beginning! Miles and Kitty had just the sweetest most innocent relationship. I loved the ending and was so happy they found each other at the perfect time in their lives.
Kitty runs a cat sitting business and generally loves all the cats she works with- but there’s one owner that’s giving her trouble. Miles hires Kitty to care for his mother’s cat when she is hospitalized despite being a very vocal cat hater himself. Will they overcome their differences or continue to fight like cats and dogs?
Sooooooo I unfortunately didn’t love this book. I struggled with a lot of the cat puns (any reference to toe beans is guaranteed to make me cringe) and the spicy scenes were a big no for me.
I did enjoy the storyline with Miles’ mother and his job. I did also find that parts of the book were really funny.
Thank you to NetGalley and Forever for the advanced reading copy!
This was a light enjoyable read. There's a lot physical comedy and a lot of cat related puns. It was so funny! I laughed out loud so many times. The situations Helena can put people in are just so hilarious. I loved Kitty and Miles’s development from reluctant acquaintances to sweet and tender friends and lovers. Both these characters, and their friends and family, are the kindest, goofiest, most lovable people. I especially love Hattie and Josh and would not be disappointed if their story was a sequel to this one. I also appreciated no third-act breakup because both Kitty and Miles are mature people who can communicate with each other and who won’t let silly things stand in the way of their love. The way Miles and Kitty bonded their love and friendship in mutual respect for the traumas they’ve suffered is so sweet and tearful to read. Thank you to Helena Hunting, Netgalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for a e-arc in exchange for my thoughts. The epilogue seems to hint at more to come. Whether it’s more of these familiar faces or not, I look forward to reading what Helena writes next!
DNF at 30%. I had heard good things about Helena Hunting so I went into this blind. I am not a cat lover so maybe I just wasn't the target audience for this one. This was soo cheesy and awkward. I could not connect to the characters at all. The cat references were just too much. She even has nicknames for her lady parts. I gave it an ol college try but alas this one just wasn't for me. I am sure a cat loving lady (or man) would connect with this one though.
You know when you’ve made your mind up from the word go—that it’s your kind of read to sink your teeth into without even reading more chapters? Yes, that was me! Get ready, lovers of fur babes; Hunting doesn’t just delve into the mascot world; she’s given us another perspective of their caring intricacies in A Love Catastrophe. Hunting’s playful humour tangled in doses of romance is cracking up material. Yeap, laugh-out-loud isn’t in it. More like needed pain-snorting stress relief! Sounds a little over the top, doesn’t it? Hmm, anything that this author writes is what the doctor ordered.
So, who in this story loves cats there and back to infinity and who loves doggie caring just because? Hunting throwing in a loop and a half isn’t in it, but I’ll start with Kitty Hart, the upbeat cat whisperer who wears her heart on her sleeve. If you aren’t a felinophile, reading about her namesake occupation and her warm-hearted abilities will not only make you want one, you’ll be feeding strays!
Here enters our so-called hero, Miles Thorn. Right—I’m not being entirely fair because he’s too gorgeously geeky for his own sake without even cottoning on to it. Indeed my kind of man. Not only was I taken aback by his stick-in-the-mud attitude, his need for sound advice notched him up to a more affectionate level. Nothing like being a little bit humble, is there? In a nutshell, his mum’s kitty cat needs looking after under concerning circumstances sold me. Goodness, me! Who would have such pet-naming creativity if it weren’t for this author? Please—Prince Francis, or what! Screaming with laughter because his cat-purring genes were lacking big time! And Wilfried, the dog! I’d take him out for walkies any day!
Kitty and Mile’s story isn’t all forever roses and sunshine. Being honest with each other has a slow-burn feel that will keep readers on alert—love, love, love, gradual build-ups. When they begin to open up to each other, ooh my, the word heart-breaking takes on a different meaning. Harsh-affecting hectoring and family issues come to light, undoing me. I could have smashed my ebook into smithereens if it weren’t for Hunting’s storytelling sensitivity.
What can I say about Hunting’s word-building art? She’s fleshed out the rough with the smooth, giving her readers two very likeable characters and their backstories in a book hard to put down. I can’t recommend this pet-friendly, and at times tearful rom-com I read snuggled up with my pup more. Bravo, Hunting!
Many thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
At face value, Miles and Kitty are characters I would normally love. She's quirky, unique and a little chaotic while he's straight-laced, type-A and loves order. What I feel like this book lacked was angst. While Kitty and Miles didn't get together too quickly - the pacing was just fine - there was hardly any tension or angst between them leading up to it. The occasional mention of one being attracted to the other but that's about it.
That said, Kitty is super fun. I laughed out loud multiple times at some of her unfortunate embarrassing moments. Miles compassion for her in those moments was heartwarming and adorable.
There's no 3rd act break-up which is ALWAYS a lovely surprise so I really, really loved that about this book. I expected there to be at least some threat of something that could potentially tear them apart but there wasn't even that, so, without any sort of conflict or threat thereof it was hard to find a reason for the book to continue once you pass the 75% mark.
And, unfortunately, some of the dialogue felt very unnatural...almost like too many words were being spoken for the sake of "filling the reader in" when, in reality, we don't need that much help. Even their declarations of love for each other was anti-climactic and came almost out of nowhere.
The animal lovers of the world will find so much joy in certain elements of this story.
I loved the elements of their mothers and their respective grief.
Ultimately, I feel like this book has really good bones and so much potential. Add in more tension and angst between Kitty and Miles and some better dialogue and this could easily turn this into a 4.5star read for me. The story is super cute and fun. The family side characters and the work colleagues/hockey players breathe life in just the right spots.
This book may be everything to somebody else but it just wasn't for me.
Let me start my review by making it clearly noted that I’m not a fan of cats but I am a fan of @helenahunting and will read anything she writes. While this wasn’t my new favorite book of hers I did appreciate the same humorous moments and effortless writing style all her books have.
Kitty and Miles came into each other’s lives at the right moment and while they didn’t start off on the right foot they certainly found the right path and a place in each other’s hearts. Kitty and Miles were both supportive of the other without trying to change them. I’m glad there was at least one dog in this cat story with Wilfred being a Great Dane. Prince Francis is a sphynx cat and every time it was mentioned all I could picture was that FRIENDS episode when Rachel gets the sphynx cat and Joey’s reaction to it 🤣

Quick summary: Kitty Hart has a thriving cat sitting business, but meeting Miles Thorn and his mother's sphynx cat will throw her off her game.
This book was not what I expected, and I don't think I'm the best audience for it. There was a lot of cat content, and since I'm not a cat lover, it didn't really work for me. I also didn't connect as much with Kitty as I had hoped - again, maybe this is because I'm not a cat person. But I also didn't connect to cat hater Miles, because I don't hate cats either. Both characters were dealing with loss, and the mixture of the cat content and deeper theme of loss just didn't work for me.
If you love cats, this may be the book for you! One thing I did like was that there was no third act breakup.
Thank you to Forever Publishing for providing an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was just so lovely. A book that is centered around cats is just an automatic win for me, and the cat puns never ceased to make me giggle. The main characters were likable, I loved how their romance progressed, and I love how everything tied up in the end.
NetGalley making my reading wishlist dreams come true! Helena Hunting captured my heart with Kiss My Cupcake so I was hyped for this one.
BLURB: Kitty Hart has become internet famous as the Kitty Whisperer. So when her newest client Miles seeks her help with his mothers hairless sphinx, she’s ready to step up to the plate. What she isn’t prepared for is their messy first impressions and the connection that still remains despite it all.
🐈Sweet and wholesome with some surprisingly deep moments
🐈Nerds falling in love with nerds!🐈No third act breakup, adults acting like adults
🐈 Kitty cats galore!
Overall I loved this book. I feel like it’s rare in romance for a couple to get together, stay together, and work out their issues with clearly define commitment. If you’re looking for a book with high angst, and hot and cold tension.. this book isn’t for you. But this book is adorable, and filled with family lessons, and an absolute treat.
Heat Level: 🔥🔥🔥
Helena Hunting is a master of hijinks and hilarious banter and I’ve been a fan of her books since Pucked. That said, I never fully got into this story, even though I’m a cat lover through and through! While the majority of the book was filled with Hunting’s signature wild antics and eccentric people, there were still some serious subjects that were thoughtfully approached. Many will love this story and these characters, but for whatever reason, I struggled to finish.
2.5 rounded up
I’ve read a large handful of Helena Hunting books and really enjoy them all. This was not for me. I’m not a cat person but I don’t have anything against them. So I figured I would still love this. But it was just too much cat-ness. Kitty licking balls I guess is where I draw the line with rom-coms. It’s not my ideal cute angsty or banter like talk. And I’m all for awkward FMCs but… I just didn’t vibe with her.
At about 13% in when the FMC said “how in the meow” I just knew this was different from the other Helena Hunting books I’ve read. The FMC was immature, which was kind of explained but should not be excused since I assume she was mid to late 20s. She also had a “not like other girls” vibe that was over the top. I am also a cat lady, but even I couldn’t let this go. Kitty read like a 15 year old having her first crush and sexual experience. The use of “bingo button” and private parts hugging each other were….a choice? Also her best friend being named Kat so they were Kitty Kat together? I just don’t know. There were some adorable moments, and the tackling of dementia, loss of parent and sibling and the guilt that followed were done perfectly. The 3rd act conflict seemed over dramatic? Not being able to connect to the FMC made finishing this a chore.
