I really wanted to like this entire book because it started so good. The first 50-60% of the book I enjoyed. There was good tension, banter and emotional stuff. She even took care of him after an ER visit.
I liked that the characters were quirky, nerdy and awkward because I could relate to that. And I could overlook all the cat puns for the sake of the plot.
However, the second half of the book just fell flat for me. After they got together and got his mom settled everything seemed forced. There was a lot of focus on the cat business and not a lot of the development of the relationship and it got kind of boring. The problems seemed forced and the resolutions seemed rushed.
Overall pretty quick and cute read just got a little boring.
Helena Hunting is a wonderful writer. She crafts beautiful stories full of wonderful characters. This was a fabulous book that I enjoyed reading. I can't wait to share this fun, engaging stories with others through recommendations.
A Catastrophe indeed! I really liked the description of this book and the first 10% but then it went downhill and spiraled fast. I think the book just tried to do too many things and it was cumbersome and overwhelming and in the end made the book extremely overwhelming and the romance underwhelming. First the positive, I really liked the introduction to the characters, their meet cute, that they're both a little awkward and adorable. I was really excited to see their love evolve and the premise is truly unique, I have never read anything like it. However, so many things were shoved into this book. First we have the dual character plotlines around grief and guilt. While completely unrealistic that two people randomly meet and have the same exact trauma and help each other, I can see it. Their families are perfectly paralleled- they both feel guilt and responsibility by negligence about the death of a family member. Their mothers fell apart and they picked up the slack. COINCIDENCE! But now Miles' mother has early onset dementia which started out mild and has her fully blown out amnesiac within half the book!!!! This felt a bit heavy and unreasonable. Why do the mothers never meet and interact??? So I thought that's what the plot would be about - growing from grief and loving cats. Don't get me wrong, this book is one giant ode to cats. I've never read so much about cats. It completely overshadowed the romance if I'm honestly but I can lean in.
And maybe if the book had stopped there, it would have been fine. But then it had to have a huge subplot about social media fame and infamy, animal abuse, cat training, influencing, and even... hockey player fame. All of it was excessive and unnecessary. It was a LOT.
Again... where was the romance? Our characters basically just fall in love, easy as. One minute he's tackling her, then she's staying at his mother's house and then they're together. I did appreciate the lack of third act breakup but the romance was paltry. The ex scenes even worse. After reading a clit describes as a "bingo button", I'm not sure I want to ever have sex again. And then after reading "I hugged your penis with my vagina", I'm absolutely sure this author has made me never consider it. Sex scenes were lame with no steam or connection. Time was measured as forty five minutes and two orgasms... every time.
Finally, the addition of random characters that were meant to be important and just weren't. I liked focusing on Miles and Kitty's families and those descriptions and characters were good and pretty well developed. But then we came to the extras that were supposed to be best friends but got absolutely left to the wayside - Kat and Josh. Remember them? Ya, no one does either. Kitty's a fairweather friend it seems as she only sees Kat to do paperwork and promos. Josh... Miles could not ditch him fast enough for Kitty. Brit Sheers? a third act addition for no reason! Teresa, a person named FANCY, a cat (??? People used as plot devices and added nothing but confusion.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone and that's a real shame. Didn't hit my bingo button that's for sure.
Thank you @readforever for the early copy!
This has such a cute premise, and being from Helena Hunting, I knew I wanted to read it ASAP!
One word to describe A Love Catastrophe would have to be quirky. Don’t get me wrong, it has adorable moments, cute cats, and fun characters, but it is definitely a quirky read! The cat puns had me LOLing. Miles and Kat went from hating each other to being obsessed with each other pretty quickly and I feel that their story was a quick & easy one.
There are some heavy topics mentioned but Helena handles them with a light touch.
ARC received from NetGalley
I am not going to lie - this book ended up being a lot more serious than I initially gave it credit for. Based on the title I was expecting a cheesy love story filled with cat puns (which it delivered), but the author also hit hard topics such as death of family member, grief, aging parent, cyberbullying, and being true to yourself.
The story revolves around Kitty, owner of a cat care service and genuine sweet soul, and Miles, an analyst for an NHL team. Kitty is hired to care for Mile’s mom’s cat while she is being moved into a home for early onset dementia. Kitty and Miles don’t get off on the right foot – basically cat lover vs. dog lover. As they spend more time together and reveal more about themselves, their relationship soon grows from enemies to lovers.
Overall, this is book was a sweet and emotional read. It read like a Hallmark movie. At times the cat puns made me cringe, but they also added to Kitty’s quirky personality. Though I wouldn’t recommend the book to everyone for this reason.
Thank you to @netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for this ARC. Kitty "the whisperer" Hart has been called to help cat sit for Miles while his mom is in the hospital. When she arrives for her first home visit, Miles and Kitty start off on the wrong "paw".
If you want a cute, easy, steamy read, this one is for you!

Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! This book is definitely for all the romantic cat lovers out there. On the surface, the enemies to lovers-ness is there (as enemies-to-lovers as you can get between two adults in contemporary romance can get) with Kitty being Cat Extraordinaire and Miles being The Cat HaterTM (he's a dog lover) and a misfortunate, but still awfully cute, meet cute. This is my first Helena Hunting book and while I love cats, I hope this is the only book with that many cat puns. It was purr-fectly fine up until a certain point (I'm sorry, couldn't help myself). Still, it was a cute book and unfortunately, I don't have a lot of cat-obsessed romantics to personally recommend this book to, but I know that they are out there and would enjoy this. Didn't think too much about it after I finished other than it was, indeed, a love CATastrophe. Okay, now I'm done.
3.5 stars.
4.5 Stars!!
I read this book in one sitting, this book was the perfect combination of sugar and spice! Laugh out loud moments, pull at your heartstrings moments, and spicy moments make up this rom com from Helena Hunting!
Kitty is serious when it comes to cats, and I was cracking up at her inner monologue when she first met Miles. The two couldn’t seem more opposite when they first meet. But through their different interactions with each other they develop a really great friendship that delves deeper than either expected.
I really adored this book, the story, the characters, and everything in between were fantastic. I will say there were moments that had me more emotional than I was expecting, however I really feel like that just added to the book. I wouldn’t be upset if we got more from stories set in this book universe because I have a feeling that Kitty’s sister and Miles’s best friend may have a story to tell!
Kitty Hart is a cat expert. She has her own business and is Internet famous with a significant following.
Miles is stat guy for the NHL and a dog person.
Miles and Kitty both have experienced great loss in their families and are pushed together when Miles needs help with his mother’s cat.
This one has a lot of cheese. There are some cringey moments for sure. But there are some heavy themes throughout the book…his mother has dementia…they both have guilt from family members passing…it’s a lot thrown in the mix.
This one was just ok for me but if you are a cat person this is the book for you!
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the fun read!
Kitty Hart, the founder of The Kitty Whisperer, is a kind hearted, unique and eccentric woman who opened her own business to work with and train cats. A calm and soothing personality is what you get, until Miles Thorn hires her and they meet for the first time. Not one to usually get ruffled, Kitty can tell he is a dog person, and is less than impressed when she is tackled to the ground after using her water gun (which is used for training purposes) on Prince Francis, the cat Miles hired Kitty to care for.
As one could imagine, the tone set initially between these two characters is a little hairy, until one day, Kitty and Miles see each other in a different light. They have similar life experiences in the loss of a loved one department, and Kitty begins to see through the rough exterior that Miles first portrayed. This was a cute story that made me smile and made me want to curl up on the couch with a cat on my lap to read.
Miles and Kitty melted my heart. They are awkward and corky and the perfect match. As always with this author I found myself LOL with her outrageous one liners and mishaps.
Mikes and Kitty really went on a journey of discovery and growth as I laughed and cried and swooned over their relationship.
I've been reading Helena Hunting since back in the fanfiction days of cupcakes and tattoos with her Twilight stories. I've always enjoyed the way she draws you into her characters through emotions and physical acts. That being said...I felt like 'A Love Catastrophe' is like a Helena Hunting lite book....it was cute. I enjoyed the story. But I didn't feel it as fiercely (for lack of a better word) as I did her other stories. Her Cupcakes and Ink were such raw stories emotionally with the sexual/physical open door elements to match. Her Pucked series followed in kind, books that you thought would be physically pushed but pulled you in emotionally. I think her Spark House series was a sweet mix, an easy read that still held the spirit of her past books for those fans who read her stories. A Love Catastrophe I felt just feel a little short, emotionally and physically. I wanted more...within both elements. Will still read more of hers...but didn't feel the pull within this story that I've felt in ones before.
This book was great! I couldn't put it down! The premise was fresh and new, which is hard for me to say as I read so much each year! Sometimes it feels as though I keep reading similar stories, but this was a so original!
Grumpy x Sunshine + 🐈
My favorite part of this was easily lack of the third act/ 85% break up!! Miles and Kitty are both lovable main characters albeit a big quirky and awkward. I do love how sweet Miles is to Kitty especially near the end!
There are some things that kept this book at 3⭐️ for me. A few too many cat puns for my liking... and don't even get me started on the bingo button reference 🤮
Would I recommend this book? Yes, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea depending on your feelings about cats.
I honestly loved this book. It was heartwarming and fun and relatable. It had light moments and felt also with heavier issues like social media pitfalls and grief. It was basically a love letter to the modern cat lady.
Kitty and Miles are awkward and sweet and hopeless. I found myself rooting for them immediately. There wasn’t a character in this book that I didn’t wish a HEA for.
Spoiler alert: NO THIRD ACT BREAKUP. There was also very minimal misunderstanding. Also safe for animal lovers to read.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone.
I loved it so much! Can Helena write a bad book? I haven't come across one yet.
It was so funny! I laughed out loud so many times. The situations she can put people in are just so hilarious. Once I was riding in the car with my mom and I started laughing and slapping my purse in my lap and my mom was like, "what's so funny?"
I loved Kitty and Miles. The pain they've endured in the past was so heartbreaking. When they each reveal themselves to each other was sad scenes to read. She can write the funny moments and the poignant ones too. It wasn't instalove but the slow revelations they'd have about each other were great to read.
All the animals in the book were great too. I loved all the different personalities she gave them.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for honest feedback.
This book was just not for me, even as a cat lover. I DNF'd three chapters in. A lot of other reviews from dog-people have said that it's the focus on cats that is off-putting, but even as a cat-parent, I did not have a good time. I'm generally not a fan of first-person POV, especially in cases like this book where there is a whole lot of telling rather than showing and it loses my interest rather quickly. Also, I spent the first chapter thinking that the narrator was the FMC because their inner thoughts and the dialogue sounded a lot like our usually FMCs, and I don't enjoy having to guess who my narrator is. Also the way the main dude-bros describe the FMC was simply disturbing and gave me the ick. Men in the real world already suck, why make them still suck in books?
Cute story, endearing characters, but something felt off with the romantic parts. I’d recommend for the cute factor, with a caveat about the cringe factor.
Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for early access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love Helena Hunting's books and this one is not an exception. The characters were charming. The pets were SUCH characters and I liked how the author handles real world trauma with care and attention to detail. Her books feature characters who feel real and are flawed. Which makes her audience feel even more connected to them. I loved living in Kitty and Miles' world, even if it was just for the span of a book.
Calling all cat lovers! This book was definitely an experience. As a disclaimer, I am not what I would consider to be a cat person, so I am not the target audience for this one. That being said, I still enjoyed it. Kitty Hart the Kitty Whisperer is an adorable main character who runs a cat-sitting business. She is approached by Miles to take care of his mother’s cat, Prince Francis, while she is transitioning to an assisted living facility for dementia. What follows is a very cat-filled adventure of comedic mishaps and heartwarming developments. I will say that at times the cat puns were a bit cringeworthy and over the top, but beneath that is a touching story of love and moving forward in life through the grief of past losses. Overall, this was a quick, easy read that I think will be perfect for all the feline fanatics out there. 3.75/5
