A Love Catastrophe starts out with a funny yet awkward first meeting between Kitty and Miles.
Miles is in need of a cat sitter for his mothers cat. Miles isn't much of a cat person. Kitty of course is.
Get ready for an abundance of cat themed jokes, puns and innuendo.
I am not a cat lover, so the constant cat talk was a bit much for me. Yes I knew the book was about a cat person, just didn't expect the entire book to be cats. The main characters often took a back seat to the animals.
I didn't totally buy into the chemistry between the two humans. It just didn't feel as real as I would have liked.
I have heard great things about this author and would read more books by her.
A great book for cat lovers and cheesy romance lovers.
Thanks to netgalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the arc
“You’re a sunrise in human form. And I’m lucky I get to see you shine every single day.”
Honestly, I loved this one from Helena Hunting (but that’s also usually the case 🤣). The meet cute was hilarious and embarrassing, but it was perfect for these two characters. I loved watching their first impressions of each other morph into realizing that they just started out on the wrong foot and really could be there and empathize with the other.
I’m truthfully not really a cat person as we have two lab mixes here, but I loved Prince Francis🤣 he was definitely spunky and had his own personality and wasn’t afraid to show you he was displeased!
I also loved that Mikes was in the Hockey world without being a hockey player. It was a different side to a sports romance that I actually really enjoyed!
There were some hints about potentially another book in this series/universe and I’m here for it! This book releases on June 13 and I can’t wait for my preorder to get here!
Being a proud, self-proclaimed crazy cat lady, I was drawn to the title, cover, and summary of this book. "A Love Catastrophe", by Helena Hunting, has a cute plot line: Kitty Hart ("The Kitty Whisperer") has come into the life of Miles Thorn when his mother lands in the hospital and he needs someone to help with her cat. However, Miles is not a fan (putting it mildly) of cats and Kitty is obsessed with them, so their first meeting does not go well. As they spend more time with each other, they begin to realize that they have more in common than they first thought and a relationship begins.
I love the *idea* of this story, but something about it fell flat for me. I don't think Kitty and Miles had good chemistry, and thought some of the "bedroom scenes" written by the author were a little awkward. I wanted to like this book more than I did. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Helena is one of my favorite authors! This book was so so good. Helena never fails to tell the best stories.
Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC. I really tried with this book but it was beyond cheesy. The puns about cats were way too much. The main character was a caricature of a cat person. I DNF at 15%. It made me cringe so hard I had to stop reading.
Cute romance story. I love grumpy sunshine trope. Both mcs had major losses and came into each others lives at the right time. Kitty was kind of annoying to me more often than not which made me not enjoy the story as much.
Kitty Hart is known on the internet as the Kitty Whisperer- cat-trainer, cat-sitter and cat-expert extraordinaire. She loves her job and knows some people would just consider it a hobby. Miles Thorn is in a need of a cat-sitter for his ailing mother’s demon cat. When he calls Kitty, they don’t exactly get off on the right foot- it’s a disaster and Kitty is not a fan of dog-loving Miles. Some weirdness ensues and these two find themselves falling for each other among all the cat-astrophes.
Well… I need to make it known I am normally a HUGE Helena Hunting fan. I sweat her hockey series and other stand-alone books. But this one was not for me. I felt like this book was just constantly talking about cats. Like, the MC’s name is Kitty, she tends to only wear leopard print, her best friend’s name is Kat, her job is cats, sexy time is interrupted by cats. She kind of gave me Carol Baskin vibes minus the husband killing 😬 Her and Miles’ chemistry is odd- they’re both very awkward which is FINE, but it didn’t work for me here. Also, Kitty referred to her lady parts as a “bingo button” and I never got past that one. I did laugh at some parts, but overall, I didn’t connect to anything in this story. Too much cat, not enough anything else 🤷🏻♀️
A Love Catastrophe by Helena Hunting is a purr-fect rom-com about a cat lover and a hockey lover. The characters are people you will fall in love with, and the story is laugh-out-loud funny.
"Cats are independent, not psychopaths."
"He looks like a shaved ball sack with eyes."
"And Canada geese, while cute, are aggressive. It's like Canada channeled all their meanness into that one animal!"
Enjoyable read!
This was definitely a different kind of Helena Hunting book. We still have her signature quirky characters & LOL parts, but there is also a deeper storyline threaded throughout the book.
A very cute and sweet, cat centered, rom com! I really wanted to like this one more but had some issues with the chemistry between the main characters and the conflict the MC experienced towards the end. Overall, really appreciate all the cat puns and cat love!
This opposites attract love story was just so much fun!!! A Romcom that truest made me smile and swoon until the final page!
I have to say, even as a cat lover, this book just wasn't my favorite. While I enjoyed the main characters and the way that they connected over the impacts that grief and unwarranted guilt can have on individuals over the years, the dialogue and writing were just a little flat for me. I did laugh a few times and overall enjoyed the storyline (although there weren't any twists or surprises), the choppy writing and the way that the characters said or explained why they were doing what they were doing just made the book a little hard for me to read.
I don’t know what it was about this book, I usually love everything by Helena Hunting. But this book was particularly difficult to get through, the plot just was not for me. That being said, the book was well written, the characters were well developed. I think the tropes and the pet sitting/animals weren’t for me. I could see other people really loving this book though!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for honest feedback.
I want to start by saying I love Helena Hunting. This book however, did not do it for me. I think my lack of love for cats did not allow me to relate to the quirkiness of Kitty. This book lacked a lot of what I loved from her other books. I missed the real progression and honestly felt like I was missing a good plot. I did appreciate Miles and Kitty's characters finding each other and sharing their similar stories of early loss and guilt. I feel like this book will either be the reader's favorite, or just miss the mark like it did for me.
I will recommend this book to my friends, I am happy I read, and I am still giving a solid 3 stars, because I did not hate the book, again, just wasn't as well liked as a lot of the other titles I love by this author.
This book was ridiculous – ridiculously fun! The two main characters, Kitty Hart and Miles Thorn unintentionally keep falling all over each other. Kitty is the Kitty Whisperer, a cat expert who has a cat-sitting business. Kitty is a lovely, young woman who is a bit awkward around the opposite sex. Miles is a nerd who runs sports stats for a popular hockey team and is also a bit gauche around women.
Miles’ mother is in the hospital suffering from dementia, and he hires Kitty to take care of her cat, Prince Francis. Prince Francis is a temperamental Sphynx cat who has been breaking things around the house since his owner has been gone. Miles gets off on the wrong foot with Kitty when he informs her that he does not like Prince Francis.
As Kitty and Miles navigate the day-to-day, all kinds of hilarity ensue. They soon find they are connected in ways that they could not have imagined and of course, attraction soon blooms.
This was such a fun rom-com and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good laugh, a HEA, and especially cats! My thanks to the publisher, Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read the book in exchange for my honest opinion. I gave it four stars!
This was a purr-fect read on a cold winter night. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy. Miles and Kitty were awkwardly cute and I enjoyed their quirks and how they were just them… This was such an easy and quick read and kept me engaged as I devoured the book on one sitting. It was refreshing and was a nice pace with no unnecessary drama. I loved the couples interaction especially when they first met. This story made me chuckle on multiple occasions and had me in a perma-grin the majority of the time. Miles and Kitty just fit… both finding each other at the right time in their lives. This author has once again proven why she is a go-to for me and never fails to pen fun and quirky characters, storylines and knows how to bring on the laughs.
As a cat lady I could not click download fast enough when I saw A Love Catastrophe. There was a lot going on here and while some of it was good, a lot didn’t work for me, and unfortunately I just didn’t love this one. Our love interests are Kitty and Miles. He’s a dog person and she’s an Instagram famous cat sitter. When Miles hires Kitty to care for his mother’s cat, they immediately butt heads. As they work to take care of Prince Francis (the cat) and deal with troubles in their respective home lives, of course they manage to fall in love.
This book was super cheesy and full of puns, which isn’t a total dealbreaker for me as I don’t generally mind those things, but combined with a rather unbelievable love story (super instalovey) it was hard to root for these characters.
It also had one of the most cringey sex scenes I’ve read recently. Bingo button. Let’s sit on that for a moment.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a review copy. I will probably try this author again in the future.
5 stars - I absolutely loved A Love Catastrophe by Helena Hunting! The story is very funny, and the writing is spot on. The two main characters are Kitty and Miles who are opposites, and they are so likeable. Kitty talks too much, has trouble keeping the thoughts in her head from coming out of her mouth and is a cat whisperer. Miles is a dog lover and an NHL data analyst. Opposites, yet their chemistry is undeniable.
Miles’ mother has middle stage dementia (as well as some hoarding issues) and blames herself for the loss of her son Toby (Miles’ brother passed away when he was 8 years old). Both Miles and his mother blames themselves for Toby’s death. While Kitty’s father passed away and both Kitty and her mother have trouble letting go and moving forward while keeping their memories precious. As both main characters navigate their family issues, they grow closer together.
There are some steamy scenes which are tastefully done, and consent is highlighted nicely.
Trigger warnings: loss of parent/sibling, dementia, hoarding.
A big “Thank You” to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for providing me with an advance copy in return for an independent, honest review.
Let me preface this review by saying I’m not a cat lover and therefore clearly not the target audience for this book. I am highly allergic and the only cat I’ve really ever been around was about 100 years old and hated my guts.
I go into almost every book blind, especially when I already know I like the author. I’ve read almost every book by Helena Hunting and while a few have fallen flat I’ve truly loved most of them.
A Love Catastrophe was not for me. This is such a cheesy story with constant kitty chatter. Even if I had read the synopsis I would have still picked this up and assumed that after the first chapter or so, the cat content would die down… but it just kept going. The characters are awkward and quirky and while that can be fun, this was just too much.
While this one didn’t work for me, I’ll read Hunting’s hockey romance any day of the week. In fact, I’ve read the entire Pucked series multiple times. She’s such a fun author and I’m sure cat lovers will feel differently about A Love Catastrophe!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book; all opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to be an early reader.
Good, I always like her stuff. Could probably have used a content warning about deaths/family lose, I imagine it could be disturbing for the wrong audience. (they're handled well, it's a good book, but it's still a lot and not what I was expecting while reading.
