Kitty is known as the cat whisperer, and has gained a strong reputation for working with cats- training, pet sitting, and caring for them. Miles reaches out to her for help with his mom’s cat, and they have a very awkward first meeting. Once they get past the initial awkwardness, they are able to work together to help Miles’s mom with her cat. Despite their differences, they realize they have more in common than they thought, and might even make a purr-fact match.
I was a bit torn with how to rate this book because there were elements that really worked well for me, but also a few that didn’t. Although I love animals, it was a huge part of the story and Kitty didn’t have much to her personality besides cat lover. I also felt that there were so many side plots- allergy attack, loss of a parent, loss of a sibling/child, dementia, social media… there was a lot going on. While I appreciate the author addressing some serious topics, it just felt like there were too many. However, I liked Miles and Kitty together and it was overall a sweet story.
Thank you to Helena Hunting, Forever Publishing, and Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
This novel felt mostly furry-friends-focused more than anything else.
Add in animation & subtract the couple intimate scenes, & this book might make a decent Disney cartoon.…
And while it was cute, I don’t think i’d read it or anything similar again…

I am a Helena Hunting fan and immediately wanted to dive into this book! A Love Catastrophe is a well crafted romance. That said, if you are not a cat person, this will NOT be the book for you.
When I requested it, I didn't realize how much the cat thing was going to impact the storyline. In my mind, cat sitter + NHL employee = romance with quirky lovable characters, but it is SO much with the cats that I almost DNF'd multiple times. Even in the steamy parts of the book, the cat is yowling at the door. The cat should not have more emotional impact than the main characters, who get lost in all the cat shenanigans. Enough already!
There is a beautiful side plot about grief, Alzheimer's, and family dynamics being affected by trauma, so those are what I tried to focus on and the only reason my review is as highly rated as it is.

This story was a fun, sweet and super quick read. It had the usual Helena Hunting humor sprinkled throughout and I loved the dynamic of these two together. I like the author's style of writing and the pace of the story.

What a fun take on the animal lover trope! And I was so happily surprised by the ending. The author seemed to be setting up a damsel in distress type ending, but Kitty's interview put her firmly back in control. Great read, that I loved from beginning to end.
Helena Hunting has been a favorite, auto-read author of mine for a while now. Her writing has such an incredible range - from the hilarity of Pucked to the intense angst of Little Lies and all the funny rom-coms in between. She rarely disappoints. However, this one fell flat for me. Based on the blurb I was anticipating a funny opposites-attract rom com. What I got was a pretty heavy book dealing with grief and loss. I do think she handled it well, but there wasn't enough lightness to balance it out so it never felt like a true rom com. I didn't really sense the chemistry between the leads either, it just felt kind of forced. While this one unfortunately wasn't for me, I'll still keep coming back for more from Helena in the future.
I cannot say enough about what a masterful wordsmith and funny comedian Helena Hunting is! This book is the peak of all things cat and love-related. And the meet cute in this book is not one that I will soon forget.
I love that Miles and Kitty are both regular people. Romance readers don’t need every hero or heroine to be a billionaire, although I do love those stories, too. I think it’s sometimes harder to write the romance stories of every day people going about their lives and falling in love because romance readers, like me, love the fantasy of being taken away to a grander world. Miles and Kitty are everyday people with everyday lives BUT have an extraordinary love story. HH nailed it.
In every HH book, the characters are always struggling to overcome a mental or emotional block. This is key to why are books are so popular and relatable. Life is, after all, just a series of events we need to get over and move through. Miles and Kitty do this together, and it makes me love them even more.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt there was a bit too much CAT info for me being as I am not a cat lover at all. There were a few chapters need to beginning that I skipped because it was way too much cat info and I didn't really care. However once I got to the actual story I could not put it down. I really loved this story and even all the cat jokes and play on words I started to love.
This story had a few scenes that cracked me up. But a majority of this story is VERY serious and I really loved that part of the story. Its a story about moving forward and moving on and pushing past the pain when you lose someone in your life. The author did a wonderful job with this subject and storyline.
In this book we meet Kitty, a CAT Whisperer who our main character, Miles calls to take care of his mothers cat because she is in the hospital. His relationship with his mother was destroyed when at age 11 he lost his younger brother. His parents divorced and he lived with his father. Now 20 years later her house is terrible and she has some mental issues and is the hospital, but her beloved cat is left alone and thats when he calls Kitty for help with the cat. Kitty is a 30 something woman who lives at home with her mother and sister. Her father died many years before and their family has not really dealt with his death at all.
Miles and Kitty fall for each other while they try and help his mothers cat. They bond in a really wonderful way because they both have lost a precious family member and they are not sure how to make it okay for the family left behind. The author did a great job with this storyline in having Kitty and Miles find a way to move on in their lives.
I have never read a book with so much cat content, if you are a cat lover like me then you might enjoy this book and if you don't like cats then I'd stay away. The FMC, Kitty, owns and operates a cat care and training company. The MMC, Miles, works as a NHL statistician. Miles needs help with his mother's cat, Prince Francis, while she is in the hospital. Miles and Kitty don't start off on the best of terms, Miles is a dog lover and continually puts his foot in his mouth around Kitty. A medical emergency helps bridge the gap between these two and they eventually bond over their shared grief.
For a Rom-Com this covered some pretty heavy topics. I'd definitely check trigger warnings before reading. There are several things I liked about this book and a few that I didn't. I liked Kitty's relationship with her sister, I enjoyed the hockey references and interactions with the team, and I was pleased there was not a third act breakup, Things I didn't love: A Love Catastrophe is marketed as a Rom-Com but the book itself was heavy with grief and light on the comedy. Overall I don't feel strongly one way or the other about this book. Helena Hunting is an auto buy author for me and will continue to be one, this book was just a miss for me.

When I saw Helena Hunting was releasing a new book, I jumped in without even reading the blurb. I had complete trust that I was going to love this book, and I did. I'm going to break down all the fantastic things this romance has in store for you.
THE WRITING
Helena Hunting's writing was just as good and humorous as I expected. I knew I was going to love A Love Catastrophe from the first page. The opposites attract trope in this book was so fun. Plus, who doesn't love a good romance with pets with big personalities?
THE PLOT
Kitty is a cat lady down to her choice of shirts. Miles is a dog guy down to his patterned socks. He seems to have his life together, while she's still living in her childhood bedroom. They're two very different people who are extremely attracted to each other -- despite Miles' ability to say things about Kitty's favorite animals that makes her mad. Their interactions were so cute and oh so awkward that I couldn't wait for them to fall madly in love. Obviously, there's more to the story than this, but I don't want to spoil some of the important stuff.
THE CHARACTERS
Kitty's character was so fun. I mean, a lady named Kitty with a cat-sitting service called The Kitty Whisperer? I couldn't not love her. She fully embraced her love for cats in all things. I loved her slightly clumsy and awkward nature, her love for her family, and how she embraced her cat lady-ness. Miles was a little more buttoned up, but only slightly less awkward. The guy's ego took a little bit of a bashing comparing himself to the hockey players he worked with, but it was fun to see him gain confidence under Kitty's stare. I also loved how he tried to do his best working through his family relationships. Miles was a stand-up guy.
THEIR ROMANCE
Kitty and Miles were not love at first site. Well, I guess they could have been if it weren't for how they met. There was definitely some lust going on there. I know I've used the word "awkward" several times already, but that's the best word for these two. They went from completely awkward to completely adorable. They were different in so many ways, but there were some deep, emotional moments in their lives that brought them closer together. I loved how gentle they were with each other. Oh, and while this romance started out pretty slow burn, it ended up having the steam I would expect from Hunting. Kitty and Miles were fire! Plus, things between them were pretty low drama. I loved how fun their relationship was.
THE PETS
Oh, my goodness. The animals in this book were so entertaining! I loved Kitty's cats she took care of, but Miles' mom's cat Prince Francis was priceless. That hairless cat made me laugh so much! He was so naughty! I also loved Miles' Great Dane, Wilfred. There were lots of great animal moments, if you like those in your books.
THE OTHER PEOPLE INVOLVED
Family was a big part of this book. I loved Kitty's relationship with her sister and her mom. I also enjoyed how Miles was figuring out his relationship with his mom and what was going on with her. Then, there were their friends. Kitty had a cool friend named Kat. Miles had Josh. Then, there were a few players from the hockey team Miles worked for that were a lot of fun. Oh, and in addition to the cats Kitty watched, there were their owners. Lots of great character interactions and moments in this book.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
This book made my heart happy. It was well balanced between humor and emotion, and the romance was so adorable. If I had to point out any little thing that maybe I didn't love, it might have been the social media aspect. Not because it wasn't done well. It just took the story in a different direction than I was maybe expecting. That's not a bad thing and it didn't affect how much I loved reading this book. I loved this book so much I am hoping it's the start of a new series.
I have read almost everything Helena Hunting has ever written - and it's a big range of topics and books. So I really hate to give this book a negative review because I enjoy her work so much. The main thing is that if you are NOT a cat lover, this is not the book for you. There are so many details about cats, and taking care of cats, and litter boxes and cat hair and other unappealing topics on cats, that they overwhelm the storyline of the book. Especially, if you are not a cat lover, which I am not. There is SO much of it that even if you like the main characters, and I really did, it just takes up so much of the book that you have to skip around. This is not like not being into cupcakes or bakeries or axe throwing etc.
Helena Hunting’s latest book—A Love Catastrophe—is a pairing of a cat-obsessed “kitty whisperer,” aptly named Kitty, and a non-cat loving hockey fan. If that sentence had too many cats for you, this is not your book. The same is true if you can’t stand to read multiple passages of: “Who’s a good boy? Who is a handsome boy?” every few pages. It was the literary equivalent of a woman in a cat sweatshirt wearing cat earrings, covered in cat hair, who corners you to show you pictures of her cats on her cell phone, before leaving a party early to go check on her precious kitties. It was a lot. It was too much, and I say this as a confirmed cat lover.
Thank you, NetGalley, for an advanced copy of this manuscript.
I received this ARC from NetGalley. I really loved this book as the end goal was not for the two love interests to get together, but to work through their realtionships and childhood trauma.
The book stars Kitty, a car-sitter with a massive social media following, and Miles, an NHL data analysis for a Toronto hockey team.
By the midway point the couple is together, which I really appreciated. This book has a good pace with the realtionship and feels more realistic with a love interest realtionship.
I really enjoyed this book, and the bonus is it takes place in Canada!
If you're looking for a cute couple who have out of the norm careers, I highly recommend it.
A Love Catastrophe
3.75 ⭐️
For anyone anyone who loves romcoms and animals, this book is full of both!
Helena Hunting does characters so well, and these two are unique and full of depth. I really enjoyed Kitty and Miles as well as their families. This book is full of pets and sometimes a little too cheesy with the puns 😂
Thanks to @netgalley for this ARC!
This book is a lot like a Hallmark romance: slightly cliche but good for the soul. This is a grumpy (him) x sunshine (her) book and is an opposites attract storyline (dog person vs cat person). I thought this book was cute and appreciate the cat puns, but it’s definitely a little cliche.
I'm a sucker for Helena Hunting stories and couldn't wait to dive into this one. A Love Catastrophe is a fun, cute story centering on Kitty the cat whisperer and Miles the NHL numbers guy. It's witty, adorable, and sexy with a side of heart. While I'm not a fan of cats...AT ALL....I still loved the story and all that it offered.
Kitty is an awkward character who prefers the company of the cats she works with. When she meets Miles, they start out on the wrong foot. The circumstances that bring them together are a bit tragic and these two find that they have more in common than they thought which creates a bond. The more time they spend together, the more they fall for one another. Together, Kitty and Miles are adorable. I loved watching their antics. And because this is Hunting's story, those antics are pretty wild. I laughed, I teared up, but most of all, I rooted for these two to find their happily ever after.
Hunting's writing, as always is impeccable. She hooked me from the first page and I devoured the story quickly. A Love Catastrophe was a super fun read. 4 stars
I thought A Love Catastrophe was cute read and great for cat lovers. It did take me a while to get into but I thought Miles and Kitty were an adorable couple. They made me laugh out loud several times with some of the awkward stuff that came out of both their mouths. This book touches on grief and I thought it did a good job of showing how everyone doesn’t deal with grief the same. I will admit that Kitty was a little too much sometimes and I didn’t think the conflict toward the end was much of a conflict but overall it was a cute read.
Thank you NetGalley and Forever for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this eARC.
This was... different. But I definitely enjoyed it! I definitely wasn't sure about the cat POV but it was super unique and cute. I also loved the balance of romance, humor, as well as family and friend dynamics.
I absolutely adored these characters. The storyline was perfectly balanced with humor, romance and that little bit of awkwardness. I’m also a fan of the family dynamics and the authenticity that came with it.
Helena Hunting had me laughing out loud and loving this book. *whispers …those geese!
A. Must. Read.
I’m not a cat person, but I enjoyed reading this POV of one! This book has the hallmarks of a light romcom but also gets into some pretty heavy stuff around loss and grief. There were enough comedic situations to balance the intense ones, though some of the cat puns had me eye-rolling a little. Should’ve expected them from the title. <g> A solid HEA without relationship conflict (refreshing).
