The characters in this book were really cute and sweet. I loved how they bonded over their respective trauma and had each other to lean on. I think the enemies to lovers trope really works in some cases but I didn't feel like the relationship in this book had grown or the characters had enough in common to make their relationship plausible. I struggled to really engage in the story and I didn't feel like there was really any chemistry between the two.
A Love Catastrophe by Helena Hunting is a sports contemporary romance that can be read as a standalone. This story is told in dual perspectives and follows Kitty Hart (the Kitty Whisperer) and Miles Thorn (NHL team analyst).
Kitty is a professional cat sitter. In other words, she's the cat lady that everyone goes to when they need some feline help. When Miles' mom is admitted to hospital, he enlists the help of Kitty to help with his mom's cat. From the beginning these two are off to a bad start but you can't deny the chemistry that comes off these two. In time these two become friends before their relationship becomes romantic.
Overall, this was a fun light-hearted feel-good romcom. I loved the quirkiness of Kitty and how awkward these two would get at times. This story had a sunshine meets grump and friends to lovers vibe to it so if that's your jam and you love pets and comedy, then this story is for you.
I was so excited to get this ARC for “A Love Catastrophe” from the fabulous Helena Hunting. I highly recommend this story - I was such a fan!
This book was so good. It was a quirky rom com, with a deep story line entangled with it. So, one moment I'm laughing my butt off and the next moment I was reaching for tissues. Sometimes it was laughing and crying all at the same time. It really was a funny emotional rollercoaster, and I really enjoyed it.
I've read a lot of Helena Hunting and this was one of her more "cute" romances. And when I say I've read a lot of her books, I mean I've read a lot of them and even survived the beaver book. Both of the characters here were fairly meta and predictable. Kitty is a cat whisperer and has an instagram account to promote her cat sitting business called the Kitty Whisperer, and Miles is another male hero of Hunting's that is connected to hockey. He's a data analyst for the NFL. Miles mother needs help caring for her hairless cat Prince Francis, and so Miles hires Kitty and then of course romance ensues. This book has a lovely back story involving grief both from death and for dementia. But honestly, that is all I can say it has going for it.
I really need to know who edits her books because Hunting has some of the worst euphemisms for sex I've ever read. After reading 5+ of her books, I feel like she's just taking a thesaurus and trying to think of the most outlandish things she can call a clitoris. It just takes so much away from the moments that these characters have, and immediately transports the reader out of the story. I think with some good editing and less trying, her steamy scenes could actually be good, and I hate that something that small can really ruin my vibe for the whole book but it's like this in every single book of hers!
All in all, cute, but needs some serious editing in the sexy scenes. She did not resort to what I expected for a book where the character's name is Kitty, so at least there is that.
This sadly wasn't my favorite Helena Hunting book. It was incredibly slow not just in romance but in pace as well. The connection between Kitty and Miles felt clunky and honestly *too* awkward which is saying a lot. I had a hard time finishing it because I was never really drawn in. I will still read new releases from this author because I really liked a few of her backlist but this one was a miss for me.
What a lovely book. Miles needs a cat sitter and when he meets Kitty he gets so much more. I appreciated how mature here two were and how they had such good conversations about heir lives and struggles. This is a true to life romance.
A Love Catastrophe is everything best about Helena Hunting; quirky, flawed main characters and a perfect meet cute. Kitty was so relatable, fun, and a mess in all the right ways. Her romance journey with Miles was engaging and cozy. Something held me off from giving a full 5 stars, however; the plot felt a little to perfect. Despite the obvious difficulties each character had faced, the story lacked any real depth and felt like a YA book that I might recommend to a high schooler. Which is fine, but isn't Helena Hunting's usual audience.
Was a great read from beginning to end. Emotionally thrilling, action packed, laugh out loud and engaging adventure filled with exciting charters, witty dialog, heart racing twists and undeniable passion. Highly entertaining reading!
Opposites attract x grumpy/sunshine.
what more could you ask for from Helena Hunting?
trust me on this. You want to read this one! I enjoyed th story and characters so much.
Thank you NetGalley and Forever publishing for the advance reader copy of A Love Catastrophe by Helena Hunting. This book was so quirky and cute; a solid 4 maybe even 4.5 stars!
If you read & enjoyed Christina Lauren's Josh & Hazel's Guide to Not Dating you will probably love and appreciate the eccentric personality in the FMC of this book (Kitty). Kitty is an animal lover, she owns her own cat sitting business and she reminded me a lot of Kristen from Abby Jimenez's book The Friend Zone! I love a FMC that has lots of big personality and is not afraid to show it. Best part about this book was NO third act breakup! I swear that "miscommunication" stuff in the third act of most rom-coms really messes up my connection with a story, but not here! This was a classic in the genre though, lots of laugh out loud rom-com moments, the allergic reaction scene reminded me of the movie Hitch and the scene near the end in the park with the dog and cat on a leash had me laughing out loud while reading in public!
I immediately connected with Miles in chapter one, I loved how Hunting started the book from his POV. Speaking of POV, I loved the dual setup with Miles and Kitty. I honestly don't enjoy romance stories as much anymore if they are not from both POVs. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and all of the characters (both human and animal). I could probably get into another story by Hunting if it centered around Kitty's best friend Kat or Miles' best friend Josh, or even Parker O'Toole the young NHL player and his grandpa!
This book was FANTASTIC!!! I really loved it! Kitty was a wonderful character, and so was Miles. I also loved every single animal in this book, and (almost) every side character. I cannot name a single thing about this book that I didn't love. Honestly I want a sequel just to see how they're doing in two years, and to see the escapades as the wedding approaches. This book was honestly perfection and I gave it 5 stars. Will definitely read more by this author!
Look. I get it. A Love Catastrophe might not be everyone’s cup of tea. It seems to be the most polarizing Helena Hunting book I’ve seen. But if you can roll with the cat puns galore, then this quirky romance might be what you are looking for.
I thought it was cute and sweet with a touch of heaviness centered around dementia and caring for a loved one with it and grief over loved ones who died in the past. As a cat lover, I enjoyed all the cat puns and jokes and especially enjoyed the antics of Prince Francis. While this isn’t my favorite book by this author, the quirkiness of it kept me entertained.
You can expect:
- Opposites attract
- Grumpy/sunshine
- Cat puns, jokes, and actual cats who act terribly because they are lonely
- Mildly steamy (tame compared to other books by this author)
- She’s a cat whisperer who owns a cat sitting service and he works for the NFL analyzing players
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! There is a hysterical meet cute that involves tackling and miscommunication. An adorable hero and a funny and sweetly naive heroine. Minimal drama and no third act break up!! Really, doesn’t get better than that! I just absolutely adored that Miles would do anything to see his girl succeed. He believed in her fully, but was willing to stand beside her and help where she needed! Be still my beating heart!
CW: Swears, a few open door scenes.
Helena Hunting is one of my go to authors and I was anticipating her newest release. However, this one did not work for me at all! I got 25% into this one when I decided to dnf it. This story is about a a cat whisperer named Kitty who watches cats for people who are on vacation or just want their pet checked on during the day. This book was just pun after pun and I really couldn't handle it. If you are a fan of cats or very punny books then this one might be one to try. Thank you Forever and netgalley for my gifted copy for review.
OMG, this book was so amazing! I gobbled it up in one sitting! Please, Helena Hunting, give us more just like this one!
Sadly, I don’t really like cats… which is a bummer because this book is about a “kitty whisperer”. I was just not set up to like this one and I think there was simply too much going on for me. Miles was charming, but I didn’t connect with him either.
This was a cute fun contemporary romance that I really enjoyed reading. Also it was a super quick read so if you want something to read that you know you can get through quick this one is a good choice and also if you like CATS!!, Friends to lovers, opposite attracts types of books then this one is definitely a must read.
I received a free copy of How to Win a Breakup from Netgalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) in exchange for an honest review.
An adorable love story between a hockey data statistician and a professional cat sitter, A Love Catastrophe is a solid, cute romance that checks all the boxes. There was a good amount of banter, some innuendo jokes, and
Though this romance was solid, I felt like I wanted more. The tension broke too early on as well, and the plot took precedence over the romance. This isn’t the worst thing ever, but I was hoping to see more of their relationship develop so that their ending felt justified. A solid romance, with lots of room to grow into a great romance.
it was just very cringey and awkward to the point where i was uncomfortable. their sexy moments felt very forced and awkward is the main word i have to describe them. the cat puns were excessive. i get that it was about a cat-training/watching business owner but omfg. she literally says “oh my catness."
the plot was just very emotional yet didn’t really grip me. felt like there was too much happening while also forcing a romance. and the author gave more details than necessary for mundane activities in the storyline.
