This was super cute and sweet. I loved Henry. I will have to try to refrain from aging myself by mentioning The Cutting Edge while handselling it, but I think Hannah and her team have been really smart in promoting this and I wish them continued success.
Well developed characters and a good story. It was a bit long/repetitive, which is why I only awarded 3 stars.
Icebreaker is such a fun (and spicy 🥵) read!
When the university figure skaters and the hockey team have to share a rink, our protagonists try to focus on their own goals despite the chemistry that draws them together. Our protagonists' struggles don't come from a lack of communication but rather from having fully developed backstories and problems like real human beings. Not only that, but the secondary characters are full of depth and enhance the story. The ending wasn't quite what I expected, but it was still satisfying as an end (and beginning 👀).
Stasis and Nate were perfect. I loved their whole relationship, from the rocky start to their HEA. Perfect. The whole cast of characters in this book were amazing and I really hope Henry gets his own book! The way the author handled some tough real life situations was wonderful, the way therapy is talked about and how open Stassie and Nate were with each other, it so nice to see this type of dialogue in a book.
This book was the perfect romance book. Hannah Grace delivered a sexy and fun romance book that gave me everything I could ask for. It was as hot but also cute and fun. Nate and Anastasia’s relationship was so fun to read and the only issue I have is that when the book was over I was sad I couldn’t read more about them. What I loved about this book was that Hannah Grace not only delivered an amazing love story, but she also gave insight on mental health and specifically sports anxiety. As a former athlete, I could really connect with Anastasia’s struggles with sports anxiety and it was interesting to see how she improved throughout the course of the story but it was still something she struggled with. I also enjoyed Nate’s character. He was everything you would want in a romance male lead but he also had his own struggles that were inspiring to read. I would definitely recommend this book to any lover of romance books and to anyone in general who wants a fun and inspiring read!
Ultimately, I really enjoyed this book. The characters were funny and relatable and the overarching plot was easy to follow and fun to read. However, I do feel that this book is written more similarly to a YA romance as opposed to your normal adult fiction romance, despite some of the more explicit scenes. This is most likely due to the age of the characters and how some of their conversations are written. I do feel like this reads like a Colleen Hoover book. Which is great because it will most likely become really popular among those who enjoy a similar writing style. As a young woman myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it made me feel a variety of emotions that allowed me to truly empathize with each character. I would recommend this book to any young woman who asked for my opinion on it.
Thanks so much for the arc of Icebreaker!
Woo! What a steamy read!! A fun take on the “one bed” trope- these two college athletes have “one ice rink” to share. Anastasia is an ice skater and Nate is the captain of the college hockey team. When one rink gets vandalized (due to hockey pranks) the two sports are forced to share rink time. Anastasia is determined, feisty and not to be messed with. Nate has this protective big brother quality. He tries his hardest to get Anastasia to get along with him.
Slowly but surely they can not resist each other. Anastasia’s skating partner is a total jerk and causes a lot of drama throughout this book. It also keeps you wondering what he’s up to and what’s really going on with him. Nate will do absolutely anything for Anastasia. He is a total dream guy. The hardest part to believe was his maturity level as a college athlete (or purely just a college aged guy.)
I was slightly obsessed with Nate and what’d he’d do or say next. This book was so steamy- even early on. I wasn’t expecting that! It almost worked backwards as we didn’t have to wait long for the chemistry but the friendship and admiration.
What a great first romance novel!! I can only hope Hannah Grace writes more!!
I love sports centered romances, I love smutty books. But wow, this book went on and on for forever. It seriously felt like I was never going to finish it. When the author decides to publish another book in this series (I suspect she will since it kind of felt like she was building up a second story for Henry), I hope she edits out some of the repetitive nonsense because it was exhausting to get through.
The writing in it is just subpar and I found the side characters 100% more entertaining than our main characters. The smut was unnecessary at times but I did enjoy my time within this story.
I LOVED THIS. I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I loved this college romance!! The fact that the book is between a figure skater and hockey player was so fun!! I love the dynamic between Anastasia and Nate. The banter, her trying to warn him off and act like she didn’t like him, even though they were both immensely attracted to each other. I am running to buy a physical copy!!
Super sweet and smutty! Such a cute novel with a great cast. It went on a little long for me and just didn’t have that chemistry, but still loved reading it.
Not a fan of this book - especially as someone who has watched a lot of figure skating and hockey in her time. I understand that it's a novel, but it's too far fetched to be real. Forumulaic, and it reads like fan fiction.
I really wanted to like this book, and am quite disappointed.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to read it ahead of its release.
This is my favorite read of the year so far. Nathan had me giggling and blushing like a little girl. I loved the banter and the connection between these two. I can't wait to see more from this author. The perfect sports romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for providing the ARC.
I really enjoyed reading this book, especially the aspect of enemies of lovers between Anastasia and Nate. However, I felt like this book was a bit too long for the story that it told. I felt like I had reached a natural conclusion and realized that it was only about the halfway point.
Overall, I enjoyed the dynamic between the characters, except with Anastasia's skating partner. He straight up starved her, gaslit her, and tore her down at every turn, and she defended him over and over. Their relationship lasted too long and was a dark cloud that lingered over an otherwise good book.
It's a good book, if a bit long and some of the characters were gross. But I enjoyed it.
Anastasia is a pairs figure skater with a focus on the Olympics. Nate is the hockey captain with a spot waiting on an NHL team once he's finished school. They only meet a disagreement with one of the younger guys on the team and another team's little sister, which leads to the hockey rink getting decommissioned. What follows is the development of a love story that plays out over most of the school year.
The love story is sweet. Classic enemies to lovers story. There's a LOT of sex scenes. A lot. I get they're college kids, so that's a thing that happens, but I don't need that much detail every single time they're falling into bed. And they say throughout that they're adults, they're adults, they're adults, but then act like immature college kids, drink to excess, throw ragers, and spend all their parents' money.
The writing is fine. The story is built well. It checks a bunch of romance trope boxes. But it also goes on way too long, and spends too much time on certain aspects of their existence that don't support anything within the story.
It also kind of has 2 epilogue chapters. Nate's last is 3 months after the previous chapter, and then Anastasia's epilogue is 2 and a half years after that.
I think it could've been tightened up quite a lot, and still been a good book. I wish it had been. Hopefully, future work by the author will be.
Please note: there is a lot of discussion about disordered eating, and abusive behaviors. Please treat yourself with care.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy via NetGalley in return for sharing my thoughts on this book. Thanks to the author and publisher for this opportunity!
I enjoyed this book even though it seemed to go on forever. I think a good 30% could have been removed through the editing process. With that said, it was a good book overall. I would probably read another by the author to see if her future works get better. I just think there were too many ideas in this one and it could have been slimmed down.
**I was excited to receive a complimentary copy of Icebreaker by Hannah Grace from NetGalley. Opinions in this review are completely my own.**
May contain spoilers!
I had heard about this book on Booktok and so I was excited to receive a copy to read since it was on my to-be-read list. It gave me The Cutting Edge vibes; who doesn't love a hockey player/ figure skater enemy to lover romance.
I liked the relationship between Nathan and Anastasia developed. She was sassy and I like how she would give him and his teammates heck. It was funny that they were partly scared of her. This book was very spicy in parts, but I like that when they became partners, they made a deal to be friends. I thought this gave them a good opportunity to develop their relationship and really develop communication between them. I like how the author addressed therapy and being emotionally intelligent with one's partner. I have spent the last 2 years in therapy trying to get to this point and it is hard work. I could relate to Stassie's character as she dealt with her fear of being loved and left. I also loved Stassie's relationships with Ryan, Henry, and JJ; she had a lot of good male friendships in her life and it was interesting to see how that differed from her relationship with Aaron. Overall, I loved how her character developed strength and was able to stand up for herself and put herself first.
I kind of lost interest after the first few chapters. I don’t know if it was because I’m not invested in sports or if the characters were falling flat (or both).
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced reading copy! This book just didn't work for me, but to be fair, I don't think it was written for me. I am a 37 year old mom, librarian, and I think this book's TikTok popularity must be with 20 year olds. I do love contemporary romance, but it seems like these people's interest were really just too college based for me to care about. The writing was definitely setting up that this is a series, so I struggled with the side characters (I think there was too many of them). Really my main issue with this book is that I didn't care about the main characters at all and it was soooo long. To be fair in this review, I need to admit that I did not finish because it became clear that it was just not for me. Saying all this, I am sure people in their early 20s will enjoy this book - they already are based on it's success on TikTok. I recommend this book for fans of new age, contemporary romance, sports romance, and college settings.
I'm so grateful that I was able to get my hands on an ARC, because I've heard countless amazing things about this novel. This romance novel was absolutely adorable, and I adored how a hockey team was incorporated. It didn't take me long to get hooked to the context, as well as to fall in love with the in-depth characters. They found their way to each other and even if it started off enemies to lovers, it became this unbreakable, strong bond. It was exceptionally beautiful, and I loved every moment of it.
This was definitely a lengthly romance novel, but so much happened throughout each and every chapter, where I just flew throughout it. Not once, did I question why it was dragged on. It was perfect. There was the perfect amount of spice, with great character backstories, as well as loveable characters that helped her throughout. It was beautiful to see the different bonds she forms. Besides Aaron of course.
Once this comes out on February 7th, I'm definitely picking up a copy.
My ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
Icebreaker by Hannah Grace is a story that I had high hopes for! Seeing this book all over my social media feeds over the past few months had me delighted to dive into the story.
I enjoyed Hannah Grace's ideas that she poured into the story however; I felt the steamy scenes took power over the plot. I wasn't able to attach myself to any character and found myself flipping through the pages quickly to find out if the couple ended up together. This book was a lot longer than necessary and I'd love to read a shorter story!
