I saw this one all over Booksta so I decided to give it a try. I’ll be honest, this one let me down. The cover and synopsis sounded perfect for me but the characters and plot fell flat. I liked how it was written and the pacing felt okay. I was expecting to feel engrossed in this story and it just never happened. I had to force myself to finish it and even now I wish I had DNF it because I didn’t get the payoff I wanted. Overall, I thought it was just okay. I think others will enjoy it so I would recommend it.
Thank you so much @ for the gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This romance was not for me. Too long, too many characters, not enough plot, and that epilogue. Oof.
I had trouble getting into this book, but ended up finishing it. It's a cute story, but I wasn't a fan of all the calorie counting, but I know it's a problem in figure skating.
Heartbreaker is a great enemies-to-lovers hockey romance - the right amount of drama, humor, and spice - with a great cast of characters. acters. Nate has such a good heart and really go out of his way to help and protect the people that he cares about. Anastasia is definitely sassy and not afraid to push Nate's buttons - but the friendships and bond she forms with the other members of the hockey team are really sweet. Lola and Robbie are great additions to the book - you definitely want to see more of how their romance starts. Aaron is irritating and helps to create plenty of conflict. A lot of other issues are explored in this than in your typical romance - including disordered eating, mental health, and therapy. It is great to see Nate and Stassie's relationship evolve throughout the book - they have great chemistry - definitely a fun rivalry, a sweet friendship, and a hot romance form between the two. I'm excited to read more from Hannah Grace - hoping her next romance in this series focuses on Henry or Russ. Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for the chance to read this book.
Unfortunately this is a DNF for me at 40%. The thing that really pushed me over the edge was so much discussion about calorie counting and weight (which honestly I should have anticipated in a book with a figure skater but for some reason thought we might have gone beyond that) which is not great content for me, but this book was already feeling too long and I just did not believe the relationship or the romance, both of which are pretty crucial. Obviously a lot of people love this one, and I don't begrudge them that, but the best part for me was the cover and I should have left it there.
Enemies to lovers is one my favorite tropes and this book had the right amount of spice and conflict and love and hockey and figure skating it was worth the read and I read it nonstop it was that good
This book was incredible! I adored the sweetness and the spice between these two main characters. A hockey player with a heart of gold and an icy figure skater was not on my 2023 bingo list of books I'm going to love but it is now.
Full of romance and spice, this book is the perfect love story! There was the perfect mix of drama, friendship, and romance all tied into one novel. I love Nate and Stassie! The alternating points of view chapter by chapter were great, especially when telling the same scene from the different characters’ experiences. An amazing winter romance!
More of a 3.75 star, but I look forward to reading more from this author. If you’re looking for a profound or deep romance this isn’t it. However, if you’re looking for a rom com with good spice and an enjoyable plot, I encourage you to read this book.
WOW WOW WOW! I need more hockey romance books right now. This book definitely took me by surprise and the spicy was just enough. This is now gunna be one of my top recommended books this year.
Fans of Elle Kennedy will LOVE this! I love a sports romance, bonus points if both MCs are athletes. The tension and drama in this book was off the charts in a good way! The found family aspect was one of the highlights of this book for me - I just want to squish all of their faces!! I also really appreciated the level of communication between the MC's, I like a miscommunication trope now and again, but this was such a breath of fresh air!!
I saw this on my kindle a few months ago and am super pumped to see it be published in paperback and that my bookstore is grabbing some copies!!
I will definitely be looking out for more Hannah Grace books in the future!
The cutest sports romance book that I’ve ever read, granted that’s not all that many, but it had everything I wanted. The rivalry, friendship, banter, and tension between the main characters was *chef’s kiss*. The book also tackled some heavy topics of mental health, eating disorders, and abuse from family/friends. Despite these heavy topics mentioned throughout the book, the author was able to write a beautiful romance that was balanced perfectly.
Icebreaker is a cute hockey vs figure skater romance. It read quickly and had good spice. I agree with other reviewers who say that it reads a bit like a fanfiction. It went on a little long and some of the drama was overwrought. Aside from the spice, it seemed more like characters from high school than in college. Also, the epilogue was a lot for characters just out of college.
I enjoyed reading this book and I really fell in love with some of the characters. It reads a lot like a fanfiction, so the characters and the world are explored pretty in-depth, which can turn some readers off - the pacing may not be enjoyable for some people. I love a good, ridiculous long-fic, though, so this was up my alley.
Nate seems like such a golden retriever, which I love, and I love a good bitchy, complex female lead. I didn't enjoy that Aaron's final act that pushed Anastasia over the edge was sexual assault, but here we are. I also think that Anastasia's relationship with Aaron was beyond fucked up, and the fact that the author made Nate out to be the bad guy for "not trusting Anastasia to deal with Aaron" was an odd choice.
Henry is obviously the star of the show, and I really hope that he's going to be in the next novel of this series.
I inhaled this book. I enjoyed the plot and the banter. The situations and conflict were not over the top, which was a breath of fresh air. There were a lot of Easter eggs to find throughout, and I liked that the author twisted expectations for certain things.
The writing itself is clunky. It made the book feel a lot longer than it should have. I found myself glancing regularly at the percent completed, surprised by how little of the book had actually passed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria books for the ARC.
People looking for a light-hearted, grumpy/sunshine romance may enjoy this, however, I struggled with it. I think my main issue was the inconsistency of the female main character, Anastasia. She made the hugest deal out of any conflict with the male main character, Nathan, and then was a completely different person/reaction with Aaron. Additionally, I struggled with the pacing and believability. I did find myself laughing at quite a few parts and really enjoyed Nathan's character! I think with some editing I would have enjoyed this more. hopeful, her next book is stronger.
Another reviewer said that this book was clunky, which I agree with. There was just too much and I felt like I'd been reading the book for ages. The characters didn't feel realistic.
Anastasia is an ice skater hoping to qualify for the Olympics. Her partner Aaron is her roommate and good friend. Their college has two ice rinks, one for ice skating and one for hockey. When one of the rinks is trashed, the two groups will have to share. Anastasia can’t stand hockey players and to get the skaters and the hockey players to know each other they have an ice breaker. As Anastasia gets to know the hockey players, they become her friends and supporters. I loved this book. Nathan, the captain of the hockey team, will do whatever his team needs. His dedication to both Anastasia and his team was what made this book so good. The reader has insight into the pain and work of competition for both skaters and hockey players. This book has wonderful headstrong characters, humor, and a lot of love.
Icebreaker is definitely a book that will succeed with all kinds of audiences, I just don’t really happen to be one of them. This romance between and ice skater and hockey player is fun and steamy, but I found a lot of the writing to be overly clunky and confusing. Regardless, I think I know plenty of people who will be fans.
This one isn’t for me. Reads a little too much like YA. Characters are a little too saccharine/cheesy.
