I really enjoyed this audiobook by Mira Grant (pseudonym for Seanan McGuire). This was a great scifi read, I loved the concepts of the rifts that opened in space, taking one sister to another reality while the other sister remained and focused her life on studying the rifts.

Wow that was surprisingly really good. The characters, world and struggle was very well written. I truly hope they continue with a sequel. Very impressive

This is the Seanan McGuire-iest Mira Grant book I've read yet, but I wouldn't call it a good representation of either. There are a number of elements (sibling bond, physics distortions, monsters, alternate worlds) that she has written before in a much more skillful way. The pacing is rushed, with very light science-y sounding talk and expositional dialogue serving as a significant portion of storytelling, culminating in a cartoonish villain cut down by a heavy-handed self-righteous message.

Developed into a longer book, the story could be a great one! After all, it's an interesting premise and fun to consider. It brings to mind The Upside Down of Stranger Things fame, and would certainly benefit by being a story with some similar elements. McGuire is a great writer and absolutely has the ability to do this better.

The audiobook is a quick and easy listen and an excellent way to experience Square 3. Rachel Hirsch fits the character voice perfectly and makes a great narrator.

This way an okay read. I feel like it was a bit rushed but I did finish it rather quickly. I feel like this book let me wanting more and for all that I read u feel like it could have been a much smaller book. I would be interested in a part two if there will be one

About a decade ago I came across Feed the first book in the Newsflesh series and was totally blown away by Mira Grant’s spin on the zombie genre. I was instantly hooked and instantly became a fan of Mira. And yet somehow I missed Square3 when it was released…so I was thrilled when I got a chance to listen to an advance copy of the audio version. (Thanks to Tantor Audio and NetGalley) Square3 tells an incredible story of two sisters, separated by a devastating event, by rifts in the very fabric of reality, that alter not only massive sections of the planet but the people trapped within those rifts. One sister was trapped within one of these rifts, the other made it her life’s work to study the phenomenon. Years later they reunite…kind of. Mira has once again crafted an absolutely incredible world, filled with fascinating characters, and one heck of a wild tale. If I have one complaint, it would be that it is over all too soon. As for the audio, Rachel F. Hirsch couldn’t have done a better job with the narration. Top notch all the way.

I perked up right at the start of listening to this. SQUARE3 by Mira Grant @seananmcguire had its hooks in me right from the beginning of this audiobook.
Two sisters were separated by mere feet when the incursion occurred, rifts opened in all the major cities of the world. Everything on the inside was devastated and nothing could enter the area without dying. New fields of physics were created to study and try to understand what happened. The only thing that was known was any pregnant woman who lived in the incursion areas gave birth to children with special abilities.
Years went by and everyone on the inside was believed to be dead, until a message came through.
As soon as I started listening to this I knew I needed a physical copy, however it only is available as a special edition from Subterranean Press. You can get an ebook and now the audiobook is available and it was so much fun. @rachelfhirsch does a fantastic job on the narration, she really brings this story to life.

Listening to this right after finishing Briardark was an amazing experience. The rift, the way people are trying to survive, the creatures!
It is so perfect!
I loved the children having their powers and all the drama in that.
The narration was spot on. I could listen to her all day.

An excellent and refreshingly original story with vivid characters and settings. I wanted more! Definitely will follow this author in the future.

Self-contained, well-paced, and with a great emotional center. Like many of Grant’s stories, it involves a sister relationship and fringe science, but in this case we also get nods to climate change, COVID, and the trend towards militarization of government entities.

I can’t speak to how well represented the science is, since I’m an engineer and not a scientist, but I liked the way two sisters meeting for the first time in 17 years can say “hold on, HP Lovecraft was a racist” even though Lovecraft is only used as a metaphor. It’s both a very small and very big thing to call out subtle racism.

I didn’t like the epilogue, though. Then again, I very rarely like epilogues; they often feel too neat

AUDIOBOOK Novella length.

A spooky offering from the fabulous Mira Grant (Seanan McGuir). Katharine and her sister Susan grow up close and relying on each other when the "incursion" occurs. The incursion separates the world in half and the two sisters find themselves on either side of the "rift." As an adult, Susan works as a scientist and hopes to solve the mystery of the rift.

The story is much more than this, it's a horror novel of the greed and mismanagement of world leaders, a series of errors and bad decisions that mirror some of our current lives. There is data and science woven into the novella seamlessly, but it might be a little too short for the very big story that it takes on. If you like pandemic horror, dystopian life stories, or just are a Seanan or Mira (or both) fan, Square3 is for you!

Thank you Netgalley and Tantor Audio for this advance listener copy in exchange for my honest review.

I loved this novella. I actually wanted it to be longer. This is why I gave it four stars and not five. There was so much more information that I wanted, but didn't get. However, the premise and execution of this story were fantastic. I loved the science aspect. I wanted to know more about the Incursion. I wanted to know more about the children. I wanted more from Susan. I just wanted more. I finished this quickly as it grabbed me from the first line.

Fantastic narration. I would highly recommend this story. I hope eventually there will be more stories in this world.

I'm absolutely fascinated at the way Seanan McGuire is able to write under so many names and have each one possess its own completely unique style and voice. I enjoy all of her variations, but have a soft spot for the Mira Grant books because I do enjoy the way she blends sci-fi and classic horror concepts so artfully.

I listened to this one, which was a new experience for me with a Grant book - but defintely one I shall seek to replicate as soon as possible. I think her storytelling style lends itself to an audio format quite nicely, largely because she focuses on characters and world building so much in her stories. The narrator was excellent and really captured the essence of the characters and the story. The story itself was fabulous, full of all the twists and turns you'd expect from Grant, as well as the wholly original world-building that seems to be a hallmark of any of the authors writings.

I love that there is always a journey and that the journey never quite looks like the reader - or the characters - expect it will when they start out, yet by the end things always seem to wind up wandering down the only path that, in hindsight, makes sense. Grant's vision of the future is always a somewhat horrifying one, yet her characters navigate their difficulties in ways that leave me optimistic for our own future, whatever (dark) form it may take. The ingenuity and resilience of the human spirit is always on display, even if it doesn't often look the way anyone expects it to. I find that to be an endearing quality in her stories that makes them resonate, no matter how dark or unusual the circumstances - or creatures - encountered...

A fascinating idea, i loved the bones of the story. Opening rifts in the fabric of our reality is just the thing that has me curious.
My only issue was that the first part of the novella tilted heavily towards personal introductions and past events and emotions - you can't just say that a near apocalyptic event occured in a few paragraphs and then proceed on to the character lives years later. It made for a frustrating read.
But the end part was fascinating, got to see beyond the rifts, and got to understand more of its effects, it was just amazing. I wish that was explored more.
I would definitely recommend the novella to anyone craving some speculative science fiction.
Big thanks to Netgalley for the arc.

4.5 stars rounded up

This is what I want from a sci-fi novella! It's fun, fast-paced, and intriguing with a sense of a larger world. I think it's gutsy to write a dystopian sci-fi with alternate dimensions set in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it also gives the novella a greater sense of realism. This is about twin sisters separated by a disaster of epic proportions. I won't say more that that, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The audio narration is excellent as well. I received an audio review copy via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

Thank you so much to net galley and the publisher for sending me a copy of this audiobook. I love mira grant and I loved this! My only issue, which might have just been my own issue, I didn’t understand anything at all about the plot 65% into the book

Narration: 4.5 stars, I found that the audio on 1x speed sounded almost like the narrator's voice had been artificially slowed down and I ended up settling on 2x the speed and found the narration to be rather pleasant. The narrator did a great job translating the bits of humor without going over the top.
Story: 3.5 stars, the story is slow to start and the first almost 50% of the book is just getting to know Susan and some world building but by the end of the book I wanted more, which is usual for Gant's writing in my experience. Sadly, the ending felt overly optimistic and almost rushed and I would have preferred if it was left more open ended/up to the imagination.
I enjoyed the autistic representation (secondary character is autistic) and thought it was pretty well done.

Mira Grant is a genius. I do not know how she does it but she can take scientific data and web it into such engaging stories - if you like Sci-fi of course ;)
What I love about her books- including Square 3- is that she makes the science referenced so sound, so believable that the story itself feels so real, feels so possible. This short story captivated me in science and in a sisters pursuit for truth.
The book begins with two sisters, Susan and Katherine (Kitty) who developed a "safety" signal which does end up significant as the world as they know it changes in an instant. Susan and Kitty are separated - unknown if the other is safe. Susan buries herself in studies, determined to find out everything she can about these mysteries rifts and monsters. Without giving any spoilers, the story follows Susan, her studies, the people around her and she is surprised at what she finds. Its truly a fantastic short sci-fi story of love and a bond between sisters regardless of time. If you've enjoyed other Mira Grant stories, this is another one to be sure to pick up.

ARC provided by netgalley. Thank you very much for the opportunity to devour this audiobook!
