This book was a cute read perfect for a young reader interested in animals who go on adventures. There’s lots of cute quips and fun critters to meet along the way as the sibling duo finds their way to Grimwood.
While I personally am not a young reader interested in animals, I’d highly recommend it to those who are. This was not my cup of tea, but I’m glad I gave it a read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book, as this book has already been published, I will not share my review on Netgalley at this time.
I thought this book was cute, it gave me everything I wanted as a adult reader who loves reading to my kids. It reminded me why I loved reading from a young age
This book was downright gruesome at times. I'm not sure if that's the kind of humor I would want young kids reading and seeing in illustrations, especially since it's obvious this is meant for younger kids, reading level-wise.
Ok, so this was adorable and hilarious. While it's a chapter book (not a graphic novel), it will likely appeal to kids who are a little past Dogman, Investigators, etc. and appreciate the humor of such a series. I really Starting with the main characters named Ted and Nancy, the irony is definitely not lost on adults either. I loved illustrations and the side characters encountered throughout and wound up buying this (after reading the ebook) for my 7 and 9 year old. One of them being a complete fox lover so this was perfect! Would make a great holiday gift for sure ... enjoy!
Admittedly, this is a fairly silly book. I liked the variety of characters though there are perhaps a few too many for a book for this age group. Lots of peculiar details though they are acceptable if you can learn to just roll with it. The plot is a bit meandering and chaotic.
Grimwood tells the story of two foxes, Nancy and Ted, who live in the big city and have to share dumpsters with a variety of other stray animals including Princess Buttons, a cat used to the finer things in life, and Sven, a smiley t-shirt wearing rat. Over the course of the story there are many strange and unusual things that take place and you meet many random and silly characters. The book is divided into short chapters, roughly 10 pages each, with several black and white cartoonish illustrations. The writing is well spaced and a good size, and while there is some artistic text/capitals or bold text for emphasis, for the most part it is quite easy to read - which is very important for young readers. Also potentially categorized as an early chapter book, this book is a perfect transitionary for readers ready to move on from picture books to something longer. Additionally, because of the style and convoluted storyline, it would be a great choice for readers who love graphic novels (though they may miss the colourful illustrations they are used to). I think this book is perfect for the younger Middle Grade readers, likely in the grade 2-4 range and could definitely see my students enjoying it!
Thanks to @netgalley and the publisher @andrewsmcmeel for giving me the chance to check out this new book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The characters in this book are phenomenal! Yes, the book is about Nancy and her brother Ted, but the other characters have their own rich personalities as well.
I love this type of book to get kids who are not interested in reading to try. It's funny, fast moving and reads like a kid thinks, if that makes sense.
This was a cute read, but I can’t quite put my finger on which students to recommend it to, My first and second graders could not get hooked - we even used it as a daily read aloud. It feels a little juvenile for fourth and fifth. Maybe I’ll try it with my own third grader this summer.
Grimwood is a fantastical concept and the quirky characters are certainly easy to love. The slapstick moments didn’t go over like I thought they would. Ted and Nancy are fox siblings trying to escape an evil cat that Ted has accidentally wronged. While the ending is satisfying, I’m still confused about what happened to their parents!
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
A great early chapter book for ages 7-9. It has more words as a chapter book but also has pictures built into the story that children will love. The story is cute and entertaining. A wonderful book for someone just getting into chapter books.
This is a great story to read for children. My daughter enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. She’s had me read it to her several times already
This book is full of unkind words, bad behavior, revenge, animal on animal cruelty (human personas) and violence. Would never let me kids read this, at ANY age. Such a HORRIBLE example of how to treat others.
This starts off cute enough with orphan foxes (well that’s kinda sad), and we learn that the young sibling foxes have a feud with the neighborhood cats. Ok, I can hang with that…what I can’t hang with is the name calling hurling insults, threats of physical violence and then the ACTUAL violence. In the process of this fued, the cat “looses” (by way of the fox) her tail and it gets nailed to the wall of the foxes den. Then the appendage is used to tease the cat and ultimately distract the cat while a bird comes down and decapitates said cat. WHAT?! WHY?!
Do NOT Recommend.

City fox brother and sister are on the run, into country side GrimWood. Now they can breath and relax instead right? Instead more adventures follows. Fans of David Walliams, and Andy Griffiths will surely enjoy this book as well.
This book is perfect for a 10 years old, the story was exciting and so funny to read, the art work scattered through the story was fun and appealing to kids.
Our collective favourite element was the hilarious, snarky, and clever narrator- roly poly.
A fun children's book that was well written. I quite enjoyed the illustrations although it would have been nice if it was in color. However, that didn't make the book less enjoyable.
Can't wait to read more by this author.
I read this book to my fourth grade 10-year-old daughter. Her favorite animals are foxes, so I found this book in hopes that she would be intrigued and want to read it. Together, we read the story of Ted and Nancy, in their journey to find friendship, love and unexpected characters through a tale that was wonderfully knitted together. This book was funny, sad and extremely unpredictable. The characters were inspiring as well as eccentric.
Ted and Nancy are foxes that start off in the big city looking after each other as they are brother and sister. After I run in with a crazy cat, they escape to the forest to meet up with some strange characters who turn out to be some of their greatest friends and allies throughout the story. This book is very exciting and engaging for young readers. My daughter, and I especially love the graphics that accompany the novel. As a teacher in a parent, I would recommend this book for ages 7 to 12. I plan to use it in my own classroom with my second through fourth graders.
Get ready for a rollicking good time in Grimwood!
Nancy and her younger brother Ted are two foxes living in the Big City. Everything is going ok until Ted mistakes the evil cat Princess Buttons’ tail for a juicy hot dog and takes a big bite. Now they are on the run from the evil leader of the local cat gang. They end up taking refuge in what they think is the peaceful countryside called Grimwood. There they encounter thieving birds, daring squirrels, dramatic ducks, and a whole host of other weird and loveable creatures.
Grimwood is a story about family, friendship, and absurdity that will have you laughing out loud no matter what your age. Fans of Roald Dahl and David Walliams will love this story. I can definitely see this being a favorite in my classroom. It will grab the attention of even the most reluctant readers.

What a fun and exciting book! The story is fun to read, the pictures are absolutely beautiful! There is the perfect balance of text and pictures to keep a middle-grade reader engaged. The story also is deep enough to make it more than just a quick read. Also, it is hilarious at times and my child was often giggling while reading it!
When I started reading this chapter book I thought it was going to be a simple story about the friendship between two young foxes but it turned out to be a complex and hilarious adventure that made my day. I love the illustrations and although this is the type of book for young readers, I can't resist joining the experience and collecting the book for myself soon.
A humorous children’s book with beautiful illustrations accompanying the story. The book is interspersed with Eric Dynamite’s rambling thoughts. Eric is a creepy-crawly( ant or a worm 🐛) who claims to be a bus driver .
Thank you to Nadia Shireen, NetGalley and Andrew Mcmeel Publishing for the arc of this book.
This was a silly and adventurous story about fox siblings trying to outrun a nefarious gang of cats. The illustrations were dynamic and fun. There was lots of humor and heart in this story. This would be a good choice for graphic novel readers and those that enjoy humorous stories.
