I do love this series. I love the lakeside setting. I love a log cabin library. This particular book had a few more sexual innuendos than the previous books. The murder itself seemed a little too simple, but I liked the tie-in to Agatha Christie.
Read to Death at the Lakeside Library by Holly Danvers was a sweet cozy mystery. The characters were well developed and the mystery was fun to try to solve along with them. Thank you to NetGalley, Holly Danvers, and Crooked Lane Books for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
"Read to Death at the Lakeside Library" by Holly Danvers is a delightful cozy mystery set in the charming town of Lofty Pines, Wisconsin. Rain Wilmot, the owner of the Lakeside Library, decides to revive her mother's summer book club, but things take a dark turn when one of the members, Lily Redlin, is found dead. Inspired by Agatha Christie's "Sparkling Cyanide", the murder seems connected to the book club's recent discussion. Rain, along with her best friend Julia and the charming Jace Lowe, embarks on a captivating investigation to uncover the truth. As the plot thickens and the list of suspects grows, Rain realizes that the key to solving the mystery lies within the book club itself.
The novel excels in blending mystery, romance, and friendship, providing readers with an engaging and heartwarming story. The blossoming relationship between Rain and Jace adds an endearing touch, while the picturesque lakeside setting of Lofty Pines creates a delightful backdrop. Holly Danvers skillfully incorporates Agatha Christie's elements into the plot, adding a clever twist to the narrative that kept me invested.
While the story showcases Danvers' talent for crafting cozy mysteries, it may be challenging to keep track of the numerous characters and their connections. I felt the pacing got a bit slow during the investigative parts, but the charming and casual tone of the book, fitting for a summer read, compensated for it.
Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest, personal review. This is the third book in the Lakeside Library series and I haven't found one that I haven't completely enjoyed yet! Rain and Julia are back and solving another murder mystery in their small lakeside town, this time, a member of their new library book club. A cozy mystery must and a very good read throughout.
"Summer is in full swing as tourists flock back to the Northwoods and travel to Lofty Pines, Wisconsin. For Rain Wilmot, owner of the Lakeside Library, this is the perfect opportunity to bring back her mother’s summer book club. But the summer sun starts to really heat up when one of the club’s members, Lily Redlin, is found dead in her own home not long after the first meeting. Alongside her sidekick and neighbor Julia Reynolds and the charming Jace Lowe, Rain discovers that the murder is seemingly inspired by the book the club recently discussed Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel Sparkling Cyanide. But who would kill Lily, and more importantly, why?"
This is a good mystery. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
This is book 3 in the Lakeside Library series and it’s an enjoyable addition. It can be read as a stand alone, the book gives basic background of the characters and community. Rain is holding the first book club meeting on the library deck and the weather is perfect for early summer in Wisconsin. When a squabble breaks out between to members Rain is upset and visits the local resident the next morning to find her dead. Death just like the Agatha Christie book they had discussed the night before. A great little town to visit and enjoy.

Entertaining and atmospheric cozy. It would be so much fun to have a library or bookstore on a lake.
I thought the mystery was intriguing, and I really became invested in it and the interesting and quirky characters.
Already looking forward to reading the next book in the series
Many thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
Read to Death at the Lakeside Library is Book 3 in Holly Danvers series Lakeside Library Mysteries. This is the first book I have read, and although would be helpful to have read the first 2 books, I found that it isn't necessary in order to enjoy the characters, storyline or scenery in this story. Rain and her best friend Julia decide to start a book club at the Lakeside Library where locals can get together and drink wine, have snacks and discuss a book picked to read. Perfect fun for a summer evening, sitting out on a deck surrounded by peaceful water. The women who attend range in age, backgrounds and reasoning for attending the group. The first book chosen is a murder mystery written by the incomparable Agatha Christie. The discussion becomes heated and before the night is over it appears that the first meeting was a disaster. Rain and her best friend happen upon a body from someone in the group and the murder mystery begins. Who from the group had motive to silence one of the women and was it because of a heated discussion or something more sinister? I found the story to be enjoyable and felt the author did a good job in keeping the reader guessing along with the main characters of who done it. There is also a bit of romance and based on other readers reviews, it seems Rain has matured a bit since the last 2 stories in the series. I will have to pick up the two books to get more background info on the characters and to see the change in maturity, I enjoy watching characters develop in series I read, it makes the stories more enjoyable. If you enjoy fun characters, beautiful scenic settings, and a mystery to solve then I reccomend this book by Holly Danvers. Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the advanced readers copy in exchange foe my honest review.
I love the atmosphere in this book, the quirky characters, and the plot. This is a great and easy cozy mystery to get your mid off everything. It is well written, warm-hearted, and one for readers who love to read about book clubs and libraries.
I really enjoyed this cozy read, it has everything it should have; a small town, library, nosy people, comforting surroundings, the police someone is close to, and a plot line that keeps you hooked. Highly recommended for people who enjoy cozy mysteries!
I truly enjoyed this book. Very entertaining. I had never read this author before, but will now purchase Books 1 and 2. Thank you NetGalley for providing me an advance copy.
This was a fun read!I am so glad I was given an Advanced Reader Copy to read and review. This is my honest opinion.
It was fun to return to Lofty Pines, Wisconsin and the little library on the lake run by Rain Wilmot. She and her best friend, Julia Reynolds, make a fun and mischievous pair of crime solvers, even though they seem to get pulled in accidentally each time. This is their third adventure in the Lakeside Library Mystery Book series, and I'm happy to say I've read and enjoyed all of these cozy mysteries.
Description:
Summer is in full swing as tourists flock back to the Northwoods and travel to Lofty Pines, Wisconsin. For Rain Wilmot, owner of the Lakeside Library, this is the perfect opportunity to bring back her mother’s summer book club. But the summer sun starts to really heat up when one of the club’s members, Lily Redlin, is found dead in her own home not long after the first meeting.
Alongside her sidekick and neighbor Julia Reynolds and the charming Jace Lowe, Rain discovers that the murder is seemingly inspired by the book club’s recent selection of Agatha Christie’s classic mystery novel, Sparkling Cyanide. But who would kill Lily, and more importantly, why?
The deeper Rain goes into the story, the more confusing and complicated the plot becomes. Was Lily murdered to cover up a tragic accident involving an old classmate years earlier? Or were the rumors true—did Lily really possess priceless original Laura Ingles Wilder manuscripts and someone killed her for them? And who stands to gain the recently inherited piece of waterfront property that Lily received from a long-lost relative?
With a long list of suspects and motives, Rain realizes that all leads come back to people involved in the book club. Rain and her friends take a page from Agatha Christie’s book by hosting a reenactment of the club’s first meeting to flush out the killer. Will Rain’s plan succeed—or will this librarian’s book be checked out for good?
My thoughts:
The characters and the setting are fun to return to with each installment of this series. The banter between Rain and Julia is witty. Their adventures sometimes make me laugh. I liked the initiative of creating the book club and the way the book club became involved in a mystery. The relationship between Rain and jace developed a little more - will Rain find love again after her husband's death? This is a good cozy series and I hope Holly Danvers has much more to come for Lofty Pines!
Thanks to Crooked Lane Books through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on August 8, 2023.
Both Rain and Julia seem a bit wiser this go-round than they appeared when I read book one. But, well, being smarter and doing the smart thing aren't necessarily the same thing. While I found myself warming to them more in this book, they still managed to annoy me with their sense of knowing better than even Jace, Julia's brother and Rain's romantic interest, who is with the police. For instance, when they find a note warning them off, the best move would have been to call Jace immediately and turn it over as evidence. Do they do that? Of course not. That's basically their method of operation, to say they'll turn it over after they've looked into it. They did, however, tuck it safely in a drawer, albeit after handling it, so that's progress.
As for the story itself, I actually found it intriguing, especially with the literary tie-in. Well, not so much Julia and Rain's attempt to reenact the crime, but it did have its moments. It was particularly nice to get to know other characters a bit better this installment, too. And, hey, Rain has a dog! Benzo. Let's hope she gets a bit more dog owner savvy by the next book. Okay, I'll settle for her learning about dog water bottles for right now. Benzo, with his gorgeous blue eyes, is a husky and tends to overheat, after all.
Between watching the adventures of being a dog mom with Benzo and the budding romance with Jace, there's lots to look forward to in this series. Even as annoyed as I found myself getting with Rain and Julia at times, I found that I've warmed to them more this book and am looking forward to seeing what they get up to next. 3.5 rounded to 4 stars. Just get that doggie water bottle for Benzo, Rain.
Thanks #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for inviting me back to hang out at the little log cabin library with Rain, Julia, and friends. They may not be the best of amateur sleuths but they've obviously matured and learned a few things, so I'm looking forward to coming back.
Cute cozy mystery with a little Romance. I loved all the characters and the fact that it involved a book club..
I received this book for free from Netgalley for an honest review.
This series is so fun and I love the setting. The plot really surprised me too.
With a library, a book club, likable characters, and a mystery this book will keep you entertained. This is the third story that has a plot of a member of the book club who gets murdered. Rain and her best friend, Julia have a new case to get themselves involved in. This moves at a rapid pace, it has humor, some action, and a possible new love. This case just might have connections with a cold case, also. I highly recommend this series to cozy mystery readers. By the way, I still don't like Julia.
Rain Wilmot has started a book club, and the first novel is Agatha Christie’s Sparkling Cyanide. The discussion gets heated, and Rain convinces her best friend Julia that they should check on Lily the next day. Make sure there are no hard feelings. There, they find Lily’s body and
I’m still annoyed by Rain being a passive pushover with Julia, but a strong stand your ground with the killer. I really wished she talked more to Jace, but I am excited to finally see that development. While I love the friendship that Julia and Rain have, I hope the relationship with Jace brings more of a 3 Musketeers and less of the Dastardly Duo.
Rain now has a dog. I will say that I found this part lacking. I don’t know anyone who gets a dog and doesn’t talk about or have them around for the first 24 hours. Benzo the Siberian Husky was more of a passing thought. His mannerisms also seemed off especially in light of his breed. I hope this is fleshed out more in the next novel.
As for the mystery, I suspected the killer from the beginning. I’ve read Sparkling Cyanide, but I also read hundreds of mystery novels a year. Despite knowing, I still found that everything flowed smoothly and there were no loose ends.
Overall, I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
I appreciate the growth that Rain shows in the latest in A Lakeside Library Mystery series by Holly Danvers. Rain has had many issues through the first two books and it seems that in 'Read to Death at the Lakeside Library' she is a happier, therefore more likeable character. She teams up with Julia to help solve the murder of a member in their Summer Book Club group. There were many twists that led me in different directions and the recognition of feelings for Jace was thoroughly enjoyable. I look forward to more visits to the Northwoods.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
A fun cozy! This is three books in so the characters and setting are firmly established. I didn’t love the romantic plot, but I did like how mature the characters were about handling it. The main two friend sleuths are definitely pretty dumb in their detective work but all in all I enjoyed this cozy mystery romp. I would read more in the series.
Absolutely charming! A twisty mystery with plenty of references to Agatha Christie set in a charming lakeside town in Wisconsin. The characters were so fun and I'd definitely pick up another of these in the future. The mystery itself kept me guessing until the culmination and I love when books do that. The side characters are so fun and an added bonus of an adorable Husky! Just reading this, I desperately want to visit the lakeside library and all of its inhabitants.
