This was a compelling, edge of your seat thriller that kept me desperate to find out how it would end. There were multiple points of view and it worked really well. Each perspective told a piece of the story and it helped readers put together the entire picture of what was going on. I was honestly enthralled and I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I’m late reviewing this but enjoyed it so much I was keen to give feedback! Gripping and twisty, with very good characters, this is a great read for thriller fans!
This book is actually quite heavy.. It discusses triggers such as rape, domestic abuse and child abuse. I did find it confronting at times . It is a slow burn which I felt dragged on.
Beautifully written, compelling and thought provoking, I was drawn by the cover and blurb, not one I would normally read but I’m glad I did, im recommending this to my book club as I’d love to chat about this to others, thanks to net galley for the advanced copy
I found If I Tell by Gill Perdue very intense and found it quite a challenging read as I found it quite disturbing. It took me a long time to finish the book as I kept having breaks away to read other books. It think perhaps the book was a little too dark for me and took me out of my comfort zone.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers Penguin for making this book available to me in exchange for a fair and honest review.
If you want to flagellate yourself with an abundance of mental illness, violence, child abuse, domestic abuse and rape, trimmed with a few crude swearwords per page, this is the book for you!
Laura, Irish Guarda ‚star interviewer‘ and a five year old girl’s obsessive helicopter mother close to snapping point, is assigned the case of a 14year old probable rape victim and potential murderess. Both women have massive mental health issues. Enjoy!
This was a book with an unexpectedly psychological bent, which gave me a real insight into human psychology that I hadnt thought before. In If I Tell, a police psychologist is interviewing a traumatised child who may also be a criminal themselves. It was not an easy read, with its insight on violence against women, trauma effects on children, and how the police have to navigate all of this - but it was fascinating and compelling
"Tick. Silence. Repeat. Don't. Tell. I am not telling. Not chatting."
Trigger warnings: domestic abuse, sexual assault
When 14-year-old Jenny is found full of blood next to the side of the road in Dublin, two officers, Laura and Niamh are sent to interview her. But Jenny isn't talking. A medical exam has shown multiple injuries, both old and new, and signs of rape. Jenny's mom and younger brother are in ICU in the same hospital, after being found in a car nearby, while Jenny's stepfather, Stuart, is missing. It's up to Laura and Niamh to found out what happened.
The story is told from all three main characters' points of view, and the details of Jenny's life are revealed slowly as the book progresses, although at points, it's easy to infer what may have happened. Laura, who's just returned to work after taking extended maternity leave, is damaged herself. She's struggling to remain calm and patient, as Jenny's experiences begin drudging up things she'd rather forget.
This book is VERY heavy and quite bleak, despite ending on a hopeful note. The main moral of the story (no spoiler here), is that it's important to talk about abuse to end the cycle. But as the story illustrates, this is extremely difficult, particularly when you're a child and you feel abandoned by adults meant to protect you and by society at large. The book contains graphic violence and some scenes I either skipped or skimmed because I just felt like I couldn't take any more of it. I think this kind of book is important, but I'm not sure I could read something on this subject matter again for some time to come...
If I Tell by Gill Perdue is an absorbing thriller that grips readers from the very first page. It introduces us to two compelling characters: Laura and Niamh. With Laura, an experienced interviewer and Niamh her outspoken partner, together they work on an assault case to find justice. In between the gripping investigative drama, Perdue gives us an intimate glimpse into the heart of Laura, slowly unravelling a powerful personal narrative that slowly chases its way through the entire novel.
This novel is a riveting read, weaving multiple storylines together to explore themes of redemption, courage and second chances. With suspense and intrigue, Perdue tells an insightful and thought-provoking story that will captivate and inspire readers.
If I Tell by Gill Perdue is a thrilling story that should be enjoyed by fans of crime fiction, suspense and psychological drama. I highly recommend this powerful book and look forward to reading more of Perdue’s work.
Well written with a gripping storyline, told from different perspectives and well developed characters. The pacing was good and the twists were unpredictable. I really enjoyed it

If I Tell is an interesting and intriguing read from the very beginning. I found this addictive and gripping.
This is well written and perfectly paced. The characters are very mixed as you read but it makes a great read.
A real positive for me was the different perspectives. It definitely helps us get to know each of the characters.
This is slower than I usually prefer. However, that’s an element that has been key in allowing the reader to piece together events that have taken place.
This is a book I will definitely be recommending. I cannot wait to read more by this author. A definite for the TBR.

Laura Shaw is one of her team's top interviewers in her career and is given a case about a 14 year old , Jenny , who is in the hospital after she was found unconscious. Laura works with Jenny to unlock some of her memories to try and find out what exactly happened to her but finds herself clouded by her own issues.
Overall, I really enjoy this book. I have high expectations for Mystery/Thrillers this one felt very light- which I think will appeal to many. The plot and storyline was strong the entire time, and I was eager to finish it.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are that of my own.
If i tell was a story that sat with me for a while after I finished it, but i am not sure if that was a good thing
While I did enjoy reading this book, I did feel like it was lacking. However, I still enjoyed it!
This dark psychological police procedural debut was gripping and emotionally fraught. Gardaí detective Laura Shaw is in a race against time to find the missing stepfather of a teenage assault victim. A slow-burn that dragged on a bit.
I found this a very slow book to both get into and in plot timing. The characters were given the opportunity for us to get to know them mainly by the multiple pov’s. The tale was too dark and odd for me.
Garda Laura Shaw is assigned to the case of a 14 year old, Jenny, who has been admitted to hospital after she has been found unconscious. Jenny had clearly been through hell, she is traumatised and psychotic. Laura has to try and unlock Jenny’s memories and find out what’s happened to her but Laura has her own issues which are clouding her judgement.
This was such a gripping read and I spent the day immersed in it. For a debut novel it was brilliant and I expect will be well received. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Firstly, thank you to Netgallery, Gill Perdue and Penguin books for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Gill Perdue has done it again her books are amazing she is the queen of thrillers! I’ve read all her books so I was ecstatic about getting my hands on her latest one!
Wow what can I say this book was amazing, it was a fast paced and kept me guessing throughout a perfect book for psychological thrillers fans alike! The ending- I did not see it coming! This book was so good I read it in day!
Overall I throughly enjoyed this book and all the plot twists that it presented! Jill Perdue definitely should be on everyones shelf!
To outside opinion, Detective Laura Shaw has everything she could want to be happy: a loving husband, a loving daughter and a career she loves. Her skill at getting vulnerable people to open up, even about the toughest of circumstances, means she’s a force to be reckoned with. However, the victim interviewer meet a match with teenage Jenny. The young woman speaks in fairy tales – but time is of the essence. Her stepfather is missing, the blood on her clothes is not her’s so Laura needs Jenny to reveal more of what happened, and as soon as possible. Much of the questioning feels uncomfortable to read, as it should, especially as Jenny is in an almost childlike state, but this adds to the already tense plot that will maintain your attention throughout. Importantly too, is Laura’s attitude – the much lauded interviewer is having an issue getting Jenny to speak, further confusing her colleague Niamh. What has this case triggered in Laura? And will the team uncover the truth as to what happened to Jenny’s stepfather?
A very dark and intriguing novel dealing with some hard hitting subjects in a non sensationalised way. The main characters are beautifully developed and the plots unfolds at a slow and sinister pace. A really fantastic novel which will stay with you.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin UK Books for this advanced copy of If I Tell by Gill Perdue, which has also been previously published under the title The Interview. Before I delve into what I thought, if you're thinking of picking this up please, please, please look up trigger warnings. There is some very intense and upsetting content that some could find unsettling/uncomfortable. That aside, here's what I thought!
Straight away, the premise sounded very intriguing and mysterious. As a fan of dark books, I was looking forward to diving in. The first thing that stood out was that this book was a slow, slow burn. That tends to work well in this genre but unfortunately I felt this dragged on quite a bit. I didn't gel with the story as much as I thought either which was also unfortunate. The multiple POVs was a great element as we got to see the three main characters separately, allowing each person to have their own distinct personality. I was pleasantly surprised that the story was set in Ireland, and as a fellow country gal I really enjoyed Niamh's chapters!
All in all, If I Tell is a dark, slow burn. Although it wasn't for me, I can see it being very popular and enjoyed by many!
