This is a great book for beginner rock artists. It has great techniques and recommended materials. I liked how the examples were broken down into several steps to further show the technique. Great starter book!

Thanks to NetGalley for a digital copy of this book that publishes 1/10/23

I have been intrigued by rock art but am daunted by anything that requires painting and that level of detail work, because I'm a bit of a perfectionist and get demoralized quickly if I can't do something right right away. This book was a good way for me to find out if this craft is something that I would undertake, because it really does get into everything from the materials and tools to some inspiring ideas for all levels. I also found it great that there were some rock ideas that I had seen online in their completed form that were made a lot less complicated through the steps to actually complete them (e.g. hummingbird and turtle).

My favourite pattern was the tree cut, because I had (surprisingly) never seen this type of rock art before. At the same time, I was kind of hoping for a bit less mandala as the book progressed because I wanted to see some of the other styles and ideas I had seen - I really wanted a gnome somewhere in the book too.

The steps are illustrated but not so much that the book is just illustrations that make it hard to follow, and I think it does a good job of capturing the balance between written word and photos.

All in all, it has made rock painting a little bit more manageable for me. To the point where I may try my hand at it when the winter is done and I can get to my rocks.

Rock Art for Beginners is a detailed, short rock painting book. The books starts by discussing the tools needed and ways to "fix blemishes" or "sand/smooth" rocks and get started. The first sections are titled "Tools and Materials" and "Selecting and Prepping Rocks." The book continues into 4 design sections: Mandalas, Patterns, Animals, and Nature. This book is full of lots of good step-by-step patterns to paint for yourself. I found quite a few I'd like to try (flowers, turtle, and feather to name a few). This book is a great start to rock painting. Would be a good gift for a creative family member or friend.

What a great book! I’m always looking for new crafts to keep me from getting bored. I thought “Rock Art for Beginners” would be the perfect craft for me and my young granddaughter to try together and this book showed me that I was not wrong.

This is full of step-by-step instructions for creating the most fun and creative beginner rock art creations. It takes you from start to finish, naming all supplies that you might need and showing you how to draw the cute designs shown on the cover and more. The author makes it look easy and doable for the beginning artist and I am excited to try this art form.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I gave it four stars.

Loved this book. I had been trying to find enough details on how to start rock painting when I found this book. I shall certainly be going out to buy it when it is published. The book suits a beginner with all the advice but the designs could just as easily be used by more experienced painters.
A book that will be valued by the craft community

This book for beginners was pretty short which makes sense but it seemed more intermediate to me. The designs are a little complex, but very cool designs though. The photos also seemed over saturated, making it a little difficult to see all the finer detail. The techniques section could have used more photos. Good book, I just don’t know that it’s really beginner.

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This book has all of the information needed for rock art. The beginning has where to source rocks, what type of paint to use, and what type of sealant to use. After the basic information, the book has a few simple projects to show what to do/how to paint stones. After the first projects, there are different sections of projects like animals, nature, mandalas, and more. All of the projects have plenty of pictures to illustrate techniques and what to do.
I thought that this was a good book. It has everything a beginner needs to know. This is good for almost all ages.

This book was very cute and gave me ideas for crafts I may want to do in the future. At one point, before the village banned it, there were many painted rocks left around the area where I live. I have traveled to other places as well that had similar projects. They always bring a smile to my face, but I never made my own. Now, maybe I will.

A vibrant and wonderful instructional book for rock painting! This book gives a straightforward, but detailed overview from needed materials, methods, and a variety of projects/themes. Gorgeous, colorful, step-by-step pictures or diagrams accompany all of the projects. This is a perfect place to start if you want to learn about rock painting!

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.

This book is one of a series of three books by F. Sehnaz Bac: Art on the Rocks, The Art of Stone Painting, and this one, Rock Art for Beginners. All three have a wealth of information for creative rock painting, including step-by-step detailed instructions for specific projects. Warning for those who have other volumes: some of the material is redundant, but each volume speaks to a slightly different audience. This particular volume spends more time than the others on tools and supplies, and on prepping rocks for painting. In addition, this volume has more “action shots” of someone painting, rather than just showing you each finished step. I found this very useful to see how each tool or paint medium was being used. I recommend this book even if you have worked with previous ones.

Thanks to Quarto Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I loved that this book provided techniques for selecting the tools and materials you need for painting rocks, as well as how to select and prep the rocks and preserve the painting.

There are lots of guides online for painting animals on rocks, but this guide had great suggestions for patterns, mandalas, flowers, and items found in nature, in addition to animals.

This is a great addition to any aspiring rock garden painter's collection!

Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry, New Shoe Press for an advance review copy.

I am art-challenged and this book has some simple techniques--as well as more advanced ones--that even I might be able to use and master.

If you're looking to start up a hobby in rock art, which has gained popularity a lot in recent years, look no further than Rock Art for Beginners which will show you simple techniques and easy projects for transforming stones into art.  My biggest question when picking up the book was how do you know what rocks to look for so I was pleased to see there was an entire chapter on selecting and prepping rocks. The designs are split up by Mandalas (these are some of my favorites!), Patterns, Animals and Nature.  Definitely a few I'd like to try making in the mix here!  Far more goes into this beyond just grabbing a rock and painting, and no wonder why these all look so amazing! The patterns are all so colorful and vibrant.

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

This is a nice book that covers the basics of rock art with some nice designs to copy. There are a lot of good books on the subject and this is a nice addition, though not necessarily better than others. Best suited for adults with moderate artistic talent.

I read a temporary digital arc of this book for review.

Pros: types of materials used and alternatives are given, pictures are clear and colorful, different kinds of rock art are organized and in one book.
Cons: all of these can be found easily and for free on the internet, some of the tutorials aren’t as explicit as a beginner may want or need

Overall a nice book, but not necessary if one has access to the internet.

I was given an ARC courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. The opinions are my own.

If you are someone looking to paint mandalas and mandala-like rocks, this is a fairly good book that provides all the basics you would need. Most of the projects are fun and appealing, with designs that are mostly abstract, so maybe not suitable for those wanting to paint realistic or semi-realistic animals.

One thing that really benefitted me (even though I have been painting on rocks for a couple of decades!) was the information about the use of dip pens. Why haven’t I thought about that! I am going to try that soon!

Perhaps one thing missing is the use of resin to give a really high gloss varnish to a finished painting. So I feel that this book might not be that up-to-date in this aspect.

This is a beautiful book in all regards. The information is well presented, thorough, with helpful tips, and pleasing designs. No doubt it will tempt you to explore or improve your abilities as a rock art hobbyist.

I caution that the designs in the book seem better suited to intermediate level than beginner, but that is for everyone to decide themselves. Very well done.

My thanks to New Shoe Press for allowing me to read a copy of the book via NetGalley. Publications is set for 1/10/23. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are freely given.
