Thanks to Inkubator Books, Netgalley and the author, Robin Mahle for an e-ARC of No Safe Place.
I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book, and the fact that it takes place in a fictionalized version of my hometown.
This was a solid 4 star police detective mystery for me. I enjoyed the lead character, female detective Rebecca Ellis quite a bit and found the plot/mystery interesting.
There were parts of the story/investigation that seemed to drag just a bit but once the investigation picked up, the plot followed and I zipped through the last quarter of the book.
A great first instalment, very explosive, gripping and well written. I enjoyed every chapter. The characters are amazing as a first instalment to which I already am liking. A well written book is great because you no there will be many more coming
What a great mystery book!!
Clair Scott is murdered, who did it?
Was it her husband? Was it someone from the Church? A friend?
There’s so many suspects, and answers that go through Detective. Becca Ellis and Detective McAllister. This was so hard to put down that I read it in one day dying to know what was going on and what they would find. I racked my brain and I was still wrong in the end.
If you love a good mystery this will keep you guessing with very little clues.
A great book! Thank you to Net Galley, the Publisher and Robin Mahle for this ARC in exchange for a review, it was amazing
Detective Rebecca ‘Becca’ Ellis is the protagonist of Mahle’s crime thriller. Trying to live up to her father’s reputation (the now retired Detective Ellis), Becca and her new partner McCallister have a lot to deal with when a local woman is killed in a grisly murder.
The book starts explosively (literally), with the murder occurring on the very first page. As the story develops, various people become potential suspects and the case twists and turns and becomes more complex.
The book does touch on subjects that may be sensitive for some readers (infidelity and, in particular, child molestation) but these themes tie in with the plot and don’t feel forced. The build up to the big reveal (the ‘whodunnit’) was good, although personally I felt like the actual resolution of the case was a bit rushed. I was 90% of the way through and had no clue how the author was going to wrap up all those loose ends in the last few pages! The book would have been a 4.5 star had the ending not felt rushed, but overall I raced through this book and it kept my interest until the very end. I’ll be looking forward to a sequel featuring Ellis and McCallister!
I really enjoyed No Safe Place and following Detective Rebecca Ellis through the twists and turns of solving what appears to be, at first, a horrific murder. Although Becca claims that Bangor Maine has its share of crime and even murder, the goings on at Grace Community Church are confusing, then disturbing and ultimately frightening. Ellis and her partner McAllister, a former Boston cop, even wonder midway into the investigation if they aren't uncovering more than just murder.
The story maintains a good pace and had enough suspense to keep me going. The two detectives are both likable characters and have a good vibe working together. I would definitely read another book starring them together.
Thank you to author Robin Mahle, publisher Inkubator and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for a review.
Excellent, twisty-turny mystery. The story gets complicated with several crimes going on simultaneously but Robin Mahle does a great job of keeping them understandable, interesting and difficult to guess. An intriguing book that is fast-paced and compelling to read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator for the opportunity to read this great ARC!
Wow! This story has so much going on that it is like a 7-part movie in just one book! It starts with a murder, but then one crime becomes three. They may be separate, or they may be parts of the same conspiracy. You've got more motives that you need: envy, greed, lust, pride. All set on a religious backdrop. The church may be just a location or may be part of the corruption. But then you also have a layer of family drama that is a story in itself. The characters are so real, and each twist in the story will grab you tighter. I could barely put the book down once started! Now I feel invested in Ellis and McCallister - I hope their story continues ....
Detective Rebecca Ellis is investigating a case with her new partner, Euan McCallister.
Claire Allen was a volunteer at her church. She burned to death in her car outside the church, after someone cut the fuel line and rigged her seatbelt.
Ellis has to find out why Claire was killed and who killed her.
Before she can, Claire's husband is brutally murdered.
There are deep, dark secrets in the church, from the congregation all the way up to the Pastor, who has secrets of his own to hide.
What a terrific novel! I am seriously impressed with Robin Mahle's writing and the well thought out plot.
However, there are triggers, such as child abuse.
Loved the writing, and of course, I am a huge fan of a strong female lead in a police procedural. I think I would rank Robin Mahle among one of my favourite authors.
I definitely want to get hold of more of her books to read, and cannot wait for the second Rebecca Ellis book!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Definitely a 5 star rating from me.
Two detectives, Rebecca and Euan, are chasing leads to solve a homicide that took place in a small town. The book opens up with a murder which instantly makes the story interesting. Your curiosity is instantly piqued. There's alot more happening which keeps on making the case messier and messier and harder to solve.
Intially you're sucked in because of the murder on the very first page but quickly you feel the writing is a bit choppy. But I was still quite curious so I continued. After about 27% I started getting bored because the detectives were chasing dead ends, the story was going nowhere, there was no surprising or shocking information to keep me hooked so I started skimming. Eventually things started getting complicated but I still didn't enjoy those revelations, I'd blame the writing for that. The writing wasn't executed well which made the whole book quite boring. Even when things unravelled they were delivered blandly or chaotically that it stripped away my intrigue.
The detectives were very likable but it wasn't enough to get me to give this a higher rating. I also felt that the execution of the climax was distasteful. The bad guy (btw I knew who he was early on) did a few things that didn't make sense, even the explanation he gave was quite bizarre so there were alot of loop holes in this story and the end was very sloppy. Even executions of some exchanges were absurd and flat. Like when the bad guy is revealed to us, well more specifically to certain characters, those characters reactions were very flat and umimpressing. Also, the villain's backstory was touched quickly and lightly at the end in just a few lines, I mean if you can't give enough time to build something up its better to leave it then to cram it in a few lines.
All in all I think the plot wasn't bad, the idea could've been quite a hit if the writing hadn't been so clumsy or dull.
Wouldn't recommend it.
I read “no safe place” by Robin Mahle really quickly it was so fast paced and I couldn’t seem to put it down till I found out what happened.
Detective Ellis had some really big shoes to fill as her father was a legendary detective now retired of the Bangor police department.
She was assigned along with a new hire from Boston named Euan McAllister an explosive fire in the church parking lot. They come soon to find out that a local well respected woman named Claire Allen was burned alive due to someone tampering with her vehicle.
This book was really fast paced and all of the characters and scenes worked well together to create the overall story. I wasn’t able to figure out who did it till the very end of the book. I had a few guesses but I was definitely wrong .
I am really looking forward to read more of Robins books especially in this series. But I’ll also be reading her other books as well. Definitely a five star read for me and I will be recommending this to all my close friends .
What an absolutely amazing book. Definitely enjoyed reading it. If you haven't read it yet, you should.
Ellis would always be known as the daughter of the great detective who retired.
Just a few officers to figure out why a lone vehicle had a woman trapped inside,
her cries went unheard in the cold of night.
A woman who did a lot of volunteering at the church, more than any others.
A message to a close friend, with texts that she was concerned about something
or maybe someone. She was out of town and didn’t get back to Claire.
I enjoyed this story, had a good flowing plot, and interesting characters
Leaving us to to wonder why a new officer came from Boston, another from
West Point to this little town.
Given ARC for NG and Inkubator for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
I read No Safe Place by Robin Mahle in one day. I could not put it down. The storyline was so good that I had to find out what would happen.
Detective Rebecca Ellis has some big shoes to fill as her father was a legendary detective, now retired, from the Bangor Police Department.
Readers are introduced to her and her family dynamics. She is also assigned to work with a new hire, Detective Euan McCallister, who is hiding his own secrets for coming to Bangor PD.
Ellis and McCallister are called to an explosive fire in a church parking lot. Claire Allen, a volunteer at the church, burned to death in her car. But Ellis discovers the seatbelt had been rigged, trapping Claire in the inferno. This was no accident. It was murder.
This book was filled with fast-paced scenes, well-developed characters, and a gripping storyline. You didn't know how things were going to connect or if those things were really connected at all. The author did a great job of unraveling the story scene by scene.
No Safe Place is a good police procedural with intriguing characters. I did kind of guess who the culprit was toward the third part of the book, but it was still fun and exciting to see it unfold and see if my hunch was correct.
No Safe Place had a good storyline, some very sad and disturbing parts, and outstanding characters. I am looking forward to more books with these characters.
I would recommend this book. A 5 out of 5 stars.

No Safe Place by Robin Mahle.
Detective Rebecca Ellis Book 1.
Detective Rebecca Ellis has some big shoes to fill. Her father was the legendary detective, Hank Ellis, now retired from the Bangor Police Department. Emerging from his shadow hasn’t been easy. So when she’s assigned to work with new hire, Detective Euan McCallister, Ellis is determined to keep their investigation right on track. The explosive fire in a church parking lot looks straightforward at first. Claire Allen, a volunteer at the church, burned to death in her car. But then Ellis discovers the seatbelt had been rigged, trapping Claire in the inferno. This was no accident. It was murder.
I really enjoyed this book. Rebecca was my favourite. I can't wait for next book. 5*.
