The beginning of the book is full of unlikable people and little to no redeeming qualities. The last thir, however, is unputdownable.
If you’ve ever read a Jessica Goodman book before this is pretty on par with the rest of her books.
I will say that if you’re looking for some crazy reveal at the end you’re looking in the wrong place. I think her books are solid 4 star reads and are always entertaining which is why I keep reading them!
I had an idea of where the story was going from the beginning but I was hooked into the story pretty quickly. The characters are just wild and it’s a pretty telling story of entitlement in high society New York. You can’t always get what you and what you think you deserve isn’t always what you get …
Definitely recommend this one, like her others!

I really liked the layout of this. The pieces in 3rd person from the aftermath of the ball and then the first person flashbacks from the girls' POVs. It keeps you guessing, and with each piece that is revealed in regards to what happened in the ball, you either feel relief or worry.
I think the author captured what a club like this might be like well. Everyone is "friends," but you can't tell they're mostly bonded by secrets. They're also mostly very unlikable, and while that shows the author did a good job writing them, it can make it hard to read.
My issue with this is that it's very formulaic. The rich kids with secrets, the outsider who is reeled into the world and wants to change it. They're friends, and then they fight over the secrets just before the big death happens. All of this made the ending predictable once you figured out who the body was.
I'm also sadly not a fan of books where you don't know who the deceased is. I like to try and solve the crime, and with books like this, you spend more time trying to figure out who died, and then they tell you what happened straight after.
I received an advance review copy of this book, and this review represents my honest opinion. Thank you to netgalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
I enjoyed the premise of this one but did not feel a true connection to any of these characters. They were behaving incredibly nonsensically more to push the plot forward than to feel plausible. Also I hated the way everything came together in the end. It felt incredibly rushed.
Jessica Goodman has done it again. I was so interested in this book from the very beginning and not one time could I have predicted the ending. The way it all tied everything together was flawless. She is quickly becoming an auto buy author and this book did not disappoint at all!
I’m such a sucker for secret societies, and Goodman does a fantastic job of delivering a propulsive, fast paced thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Jessica Goodman, my YA thriller queen. Best release since They Wish They Were Us (in my opinion)!
The story is so fast-paced that you don't get time to connect to the characters yet feel an utter determination to discover the mystery behind the smokescreens. 9/10 read for me, I couldn't put it done!
The Legacies tries to position itself as a murder-mystery set in a Gossip Girl-esque world. Goodman creates some interesting characters, but the core mystery falls flat. I cannot help but imagine what Goodman could have done if this was an adult novel. After reading so many YA murder mysteries, I do not think that this sub-genre works in YA.
I just couldn't get hooked into this one. It was similar to a lot of other books in the genre I've read recently and it just didn't stand out among them.
I love a good dark academia book! This was a thrilling exploration into the cutthroat world of elite prep schools. The author combined lots of mystery and drama, uncovering dark secrets and rivalries. This book is such a page-turner and kept me engaged until the very end.
If you love rich kid drama, murder mysteries, and twists, then you will love The Legacies. The writing was little choppy as well and kept throwing me out of the story. The book is told from multiple perspectives, which adds depth but can be a bit confusing with so many characters
Perfect sit by the pool read! Finished in two sittings due to the fast paced nature of this story and the writing. If you love rich kid drama, murder mysteries, and twists, then you will love The Legacies. However, I don't typically go for books like this but I loved every second! There are several triggers in this book so be sure to check out the content warnings!
This book was not for me. I was excited to read about an exclusive prep school because that is one of my favorite YA tropes. This one just did not capture my attention. I didn't really care about the Legacy Club and didn't think it was that unique. The writing was little choppy as well and kept throwing me out of the story.
The Legacies delivers a thrilling ride through the glamorous yet treacherous world of the elite Legacy Club. Set against the backdrop of New York City's high society, I was hooked from the start, especially thanks to the mix of mystery and high-society drama reminiscent of Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. What really drew me in was the rich atmosphere and the intriguing characters. Bernie, in particular, was a standout with her complex personality. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat (more like my bed but tmi), and I enjoyed trying to piece together the mystery (even tho I couldn't because I'm dumb and I like to be explained everything like I'm five). However, the pacing felt a bit uneven at times, with many secrets revealed towards the end.
The book is told from multiple perspectives, which adds depth but can be a bit confusing with so many characters. Despite this, I know many readers will appreciate the different viewpoints. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves YA thrillers with a mix of mystery, drama, and a touch of romance. If you enjoy stories with intricate plots and unexpected twists, this book is for you.
This was amazing. Jessica writes the best thrillers with twists and turns. I loved Bernie and Tori's relationship that develops throughout the book. The writing was great and I can't wait to read more by her!

Jessica Goodman has done it again! Every time i pick up one of her ya
Thriller mysteries, I'm never disappointed.
Following a group of teens attending the most prestigious high schools of New York, we watch the group dynamics play out amid preparation for the legacy ball which occurs the last week of summer before senior year. With families that know nepotism is just part of the game., there's nothing much to worry about getting in to the elite legacy Club. Except for the dead body the police are investigating the night of the ball.
If you ever loved Gossip Girl, this is the book for you.
I really enjoyed this one! This one started off seeming a little predictable, but I wound up being so wrong. I can't even count all of the jaw-dropping twists along the way, even up to which of the characters met this terrible fate. It was so fun to get a glimpse into the lives of these young members of the New York elite, and with a dash of danger mixed in, I couldn't have been more excited for this one.
I liked the high society setting of this book. It made the storyline extremely intriguing. The dual storyline kept me interested and wanting to learn more.
I struggled with connecting to the characters and didn’t really care what happened to them past finding out the main plot.
I had some many questions throughout reading that were all answered and wrapped up nicely in the end.
This book was beautifully crafted with well written plot twists. The amount of points of views were at times hard to follow and they felt very shallow. I would've loved to have more a focus of the murder/thriller side of the book rather than the teen drama, but that's just a preference, and I'm sure many would have enjoyed that.
This story is a YA version of rich people behaving poorly and I was all about it! I love a good prep school setting and although I didn’t really like any of the characters (like at all) I did enjoy all of their storylines and was invested in what was going to happen. I liked that this was a quick read and all around a solid YA thriller. The ending left me with a few unanswered questions though and I felt as if it was a little predictable.
