Ah, we are back in the pages with our beloved Bayview Crew! Can these kids ever catch a break? Bayview seems to always have a murderous plot on their hands. Our fave crew is back to trying to solve what is happening…again. A mysterious and cryptic Billboard starts off a new deadly game. But can they figure out the rules and who’s behind it in time? Are our fave crew going to make it out alive? Remember, practice makes perfect.
I do recommend brushing up on the previous books. I did a quick re-read of everything so I could go in with a fresh memory. Not necessary but it helped me place the past better.
What I enjoyed:
- multiple POVS between Nate, Addy, and Phoebe
- The pacing was quick and we jump right into the mystery.
- I did not see any of it coming! I kept second guessing myself. I loved the twists and turns.
- Such a great conclusion and wrap up of some our fave characters!!
Overall, I loved this book! I thought it was the perfect conclusion to a series I loved. The book was twisty and fast paced. 4 stars out of 5! Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
When the Bayview Crew ends up in the middle of another sinister game, it's all hands on deck to figure out what's going on.I loved coming back to Bayview and seeing what all my favorite characters have been up to since we last saw them, even if that means they are all in danger once again.
We get multiple POVs not only following a few of our main characters from the crew, but also Jake and Simon. There were plenty of twists and turns, some great suspenseful moments, and I never had any idea what was going to happen next. I loved how it ended, and I can't wait to see what Karen McManus is going to write next!
One Of Us Is Back | 4.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫
One of Us Is Back is the third book in the One Of Us Is Lying series, and like always, Karen McManus didn’t disappoint.
While this felt like a watered down version of the first two books, and it wasn’t completely needed I love that we finally had a calm finale for all these characters.
I loved the plot twist of this book and the different perspectives we got! So interesting to read!
Thank you to Net Galley and Karen McManus for giving me the opportunity of reading an ARC Version of this book and giving an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, as it kept me reading to figure out how it would be resolved. There were several characters, so I had a cheat sheet for myself going at first to keep them straight. As it turns out, I haven't read book 2, but I didn't feel lost reading book 3, as there was plenty of background/plot recap to help me. I found the book entertaining and could easily visualize the characters. I think teens will appreciate the friendship bonds.
The murder crew teams up with their younger counterparts to form the Bayview Crew in the third book of the One Of Us Is Lying series. Summer has come upon them and after last year's events, they are truly looking forward to an uneventful summer together, but we all know they never have such luck.
Jake is still a threat to Addy and the whole crew, Pheobe is dealing with secrets she's locked up, Maeve and Luis are finally a couple and doing coupley things, and Nate and Bronwyn are better than ever. Seem like a perfect summer, until their worst fears come true and one of the crew is put in serious jeopardy...
I really enjoyed book 3 of this series. Though we have cameos of all of the characters in the last book, this one finally brought them all together to work together. Once again, who I thought was the culprit was incorrect! I am usually pretty good at figuring that out but the author somehow always ends up stumping me. There were some moments that absolutely made me squeal in delight and yell at my Kindle. I am not sure if there will be another after this but I thought it was wrapped up enough to be the end of the series but open-ended enough to be continued.
Overall I enjoyed the series and would read and recommend more of the author's work.
Thank you Netgalley and Karen M. McManus for allowing me to ARC this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of One of Us Is Back.
This is the third instalment in the "One of Us Is Lying" series, and it was fun to revisit some of our old favorites from the Bayview crew! As it has been a long time since I read the second instalment, I was a bit concerned that I'd forgotten all the characters. I love the handy "contact list" at the beginning of this book, indicating all the character names and how they are connected. It was a nice little refresher right at the beginning, and there were also mentions of things that happened in previous books to recap what might have been forgotten.
The plot itself just took me some time to get into, but I did end up enjoying this. I think this book was a good ending to the "One of Us Is Lying" series, and would recommend reading the whole series.
Well this series just keeps getting better and better. A great read and such a testament to fantastic writing that this series is still going so strong.
When I saw One of Us Is Back was available on NetGalley I jumped at the chance to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I loved the first two in the trilogy so much, but found this one lacking.

This book combines ALL the characters from the first book, but only three points of view. To say that things were confusing would be a little bit of an understatement. The first half of the book was spent rehashing the first two and setting up for the second half. It was long and quite frankly boring. By the time I got to the second half I wasn’t invested. Things progressed really quickly at the end and didn’t provide a satisfying ending to the character’s story.

I would still read the book, but it wasn’t a favorite.
Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for this advanced copy.
One of Us is Back was such a thrilling book. I had so much fun reading this one. And I absolutely loved the way they put all main characters in the first pages. That was needed! Especially because I forgot almost everything.
I liked the mystery, but still didn't think this book was necessary.
Once again Karen McManus manages to ensnare her reader and submerse them in her story. The writing is done beautifully, very descriptive, and unfolds easily for younger readers to follow the plot. Following the Bayview Crew and their return home 2 years after Simon died in detention, "One of Us is Back" continues on the journey of the crew and their interactions once they return home. With suspense building in each chapter, and the thrill of connecting descriptions and events together, Karen McManus does a beautiful job making sure that her reader is engaged and entertained. I definitely recommend this one, and will recommend it to my students as they all loved "One of Us is Lying". Thank you for a wonderful story!
This town is becoming a little too much like Pretty Little Liars - too much unrealistic drama for the sake of drama. It did take me some time to remember the characters and story from the first three books.
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
In One of Us Is Back, the third installment of the One of Us Is Lying series by Karen M. McManus, the Bayview Crew finds themselves entangled in a dangerous game when a member goes missing and a mysterious billboard appears. Through multiple points of view, including Addy, Phoebe, and Nate, the author skillfully navigates the complex web of characters, re-familiarizing readers with their lives and bonds.
While the initial chapters may lack significant action, the palpable tension of a thriller gradually builds, leading to a well-thought-out conclusion with twists and turns that keep readers engaged. Although burdened with numerous characters and the need to backfill old plotlines, One of Us Is Back remains an enjoyable and satisfying read, appealing to young adult audiences with its compelling narrative and exploration of the characters' shared trauma.
McManus demonstrates her expertise in the genre, creating a suspenseful and addictive story that offers a worthy continuation of the series, with intriguing revelations and a well-paced plot that will leave fans eager for more.
Thanks to GetUnderlined for my advance copy and a finished copy!
One Of Us Is Back is such a satisfying wrap up to the shenanigans at Bayview, I will be honest I was little skeptical about another book because I just loved where the second book ended but I am happy to be wrong. I ended up enjoying book 3 and getting back to the familiar Murder Club crew from both the books, a new kind of game is starting in the cursed town of Bayview where scandals and deaths always linger on the borders only this time there are no rules and no structure. Anything can happen to anyone and more secrets are going to spill for there is never a shortage of them when it comes to people in Bayview especially with a new chaotic Villain at play, it is going to get real serious
It is a well done multiple POV narrated through Addy, Phoebe and Nate with some surprise POV's later on, I was initially getting confused with all the crew from the murder club because the folks from book 1 AND 2 are the main players now but not to worry, the author did a fantastic job of re-familiarizing them.I loved the characters bonding over their common trauma and having each other's backs in the book and Nate/Bronwyn dynamic was still just as adorable as it was in book 1 along with Addy/Nate's new born friendship. However, my favorite part has to be Simon's(no, he is not coming back as a ghost unfortunately) flashbacks and witnessing his utterly twisted villainy, to watch the way he sets things in motion is just so good(in a very twisted way of course lol)
The only reason it wasn't a 5star for me was because the "Mystery/action" part doesn't kick off until much later, nothing significant happens during the most of the initial chapters though they are still entertaining. I also sensed the palpable tension of reading a thriller (like the first two books) wasn't in this one but maybe that is a me problem and some of the plot points felt a little too far fetched at times. In the end I still think this is a great wrap up and an entertaining YA thriller.
First of all, thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy of One of Us Is Back. This wasn't my favorite of the "One of Us" books, but it was still a fun romp. Karen M. McManus's name ensures the book will fly off my shelves, and I'll definitely purchase it. We'll probably also do a "One of Us" lunch discussion to debate the merits of each book in the series. There are some great tie-ins that I think we can use with it.
Thank you to NetGalley for an e-ARC of this book!
One of Us is Back is the 3rd installment of the Bayview crew. It had been a long time since I'd read the first two books, but McManus did a pretty good job of recapping the necessary and relevant details from past books. I did read this book very quickly, but overall I found the story underwhelming. There are a lot of characters to keep up with and as such, depth and development suffer a little bit. I felt like nothing really happened until 40 or 50% into the book, which, in my experience, means that many of my teen readers won't stick with it. I did find the way that Simon was worked into the story interesting, but wanted a little more about the new characters that become important to the plot.
I love a good YA thriller and Karen McManus knows how to deliver them. When I was teaching I couldn’t keep the first two books on my shelves and now there’s a third to add to my collection.
Book 3 picks up where book 2 ended and we join the murder club as a new game begins, old enemies return, and hidden threats are exposed. This was a super quick and enjoyable read that was consistent with what I’ve come to expect with this series.
This book was worth the wait and a great way to end the series. I’m glad we got to say goodbye (at least for now) to The Bayview 4
I should have known this book wasn't going to be for me when I tried to remember what happened in the second book and recall nothing. The first book is still pretty clear in my mind, but the second? Not much there. This book does do a good job of recapping events of the previous books (mainly book 2) throughout the first quarter of the book which did help to bring back memories of the second book.
I think the biggest problem with this book (and series moving forward if there will be more) is the absolutely massive cast of characters that always get added to, not dwindled down. It's hard (if not impossible) to keep track of everyone, their relationships, and their backstories; the Murder Crew needs to be parred down a bit in some way. This leads to the issue being the culprit(s) (I won't say how many are involved) having so little time on page that you either a) don't suspect them because you kind of forget they're there or b) immediately suspecting them because they're casually brought up, but have no real purpose except to be the killer(s).
The plot was rather slow moving with not much happening throughout most of the book except for setting up past events that we didn't know about (to my recollection) to give the culprit(s) their motive for the big finale. Pair this with the fact that each character POV sounds really indiscernible from one another and this book really makes for a fast read, but a rather unmemorable and unnecessary one. I still highly recommend One of Us is Lying, but the rest of the series hasn't lived up to what that book did and the commentary it had in it.
My thanks go out to NetGalley and Random House Children's/Delacorte Press for providing me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What an epic conclusion! I loved being back with the Bayview Crew, and I loved how we picked up right where we left off at the end of One of Us is Next.
I loved the POV characters, but I missed Bronwyn and the others. I know it wasn’t their story, but still I expected more.
All in all, I loved the mystery in this one, and how it kept me guessing right up until the gunshot. I feel like everyone got their comeuppance!
I rated this four stars simply because it wasn’t as action-packed as the first two, and the creep factor just wasn’t there for me until those final few chapters when everything really started coming out.
First, thank you, NetGalley and Random House Children’s/Delacorte Press, for providing an ARC and the opportunity to share an honest review of this book.. I didn't read this series so I had to go back and read from the start and let me tell you. It was a wild ride from start to finish. I was so excited to be back in the Bayview school.
The story had different twists and turns as it went on but some of the plots didn't seem as detailed as the previous. I did like the romance along with the suspense, it had it's cute moments then bam right into the heart racing. The buildup was a little slower pace but all in all this was a good read. Thank you.
The author is absolutely one of the best YA mystery writers out there, but I found this third (and final, I hope) novel set in the Bayview world of One of Us is Lying overencumbered with too many characters and too much old plot to be backfilled. Underneath it all, is a nifty mystery which maybe could have worked better as a standalone.
Characters from the previous two novels narrate the goings on of the summer, two years after the original and ingenious Simon Kelleher death. Now his co-conspirator Jake Riordan, is out on bail pending a re-trial, and an electronic billboard announces “There’s a new game in town.” Actually it’s not even much of a game but, you know, keeping things on theme.
However, for those of us who have forgotten the plots or not read the first two novels, there has to be a lot of re-capping and characters reminding us of what happened - particularly from the much more convoluted One of Us 2. I found the voices of the different narrators virtually indistinguishable and got myself in quite a muddle about who was who.
For me, the author’s most successful mystery outside of One of Us 1 is The Cousins which took a break from school-set murders and had a freshness and originality that most of the other books have lacked. I understand the desire to stick with an already developed set of characters and to twine in a new mystery on top of ones that have gone before, but I really wish the author would take a step back and a break and use her fiendish plotting skills in a new environment.
Thanks to Delacorte and Netgalley for the digital review copy.
