I may be in the wrong headspace to read this book however I did enjoy the writing. Sadly, I did not care for the MC explaining everything about intimacy to the love interest. But I love the author and her other books so I cannot give it anything but 4 stars. It's a good story but not for me at this current time. Hope whoever picks it up gets to enjoy it more than I did.
Thank you Netgalley and Berkley for the eARC of this book!
This one and I were not a good fit, and I DNF'd at 43%
I am sure many many people are going to love it. This is a case of it was me not the book
Okay, this is my second book by Rachel, and I think it's safe to say that I am obsessed. Her writing style is marvelous and eloquent. Her characters are realistic and deep. The relationship between the two main characters was so mature and amazing. The storyline was unique and fun.
I'm simply obsessed.
Most books I read, the girl is the inexperienced one in the relationship, but in this case (can we call it a situationship?) it's the opposite. This book has us with our two main characters, Chandler and Finn, and they have a great connection but horrifically bad sex. However, a job opportunity brings them back together in supreme awkwardness. And in order to get over said awkwardness, they must communicate about the horrifically bad sex, which leads to lessons.
Did I say I was obsessed?
We've got some great tropes: celebrity romance, work relationship, one bed trope, etc. I really enjoyed this one. The spice was of course amazing. The connection between the two characters was beautifully done. I'm eager to read more by Rachel Lynn Solomon!
I loved this one so much. Rachel Lynn Solomon is one of my favorite authors and her adult romances are some of the best books I've ever read. I loved the friendship between Finn and Chandler, which grows into more. The sex positive story and the OCD, anxiety rep was amazing. I loved the jewish rep. This was great!
I received an ARC copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
To start, this book was well written. And I didn’t write down any notes while reading it so that’s always a good sign. I just felt like this book was pretty average. Nothing really stuck out to me that made me fall in love with the characters or the book in general.
I was somewhat annoyed with the miscommunication trope and just how it seemed like the main characters were never willing to talk to each other about how they were feeling. Another thing that kind of irked me was that Chandler agreed to their deal of teaching Finn how to be a better lover but was scared away multiple times by physical intimacy. I read another book with this sort of plot line and it frustrated me because why would you agree to that deal or even to the author, why would you write a book like that when you know the main character isn’t going to follow through?
Those two things were my main problems with the book. Like I said, though, the book was well written, and there wasn’t anything that stood out to me that made me massively like/dislike the book.
Of course I read it in one sitting. It’s a Rachel Lynn Solomon title. That’s what her writing does to me. I just can’t stop. Every time I read one of her books, whether adult or YA, I am struck by all of the reasons that the way she writes the world is the way I wish the world could always be. There are the subtle inclusions of LGBTQ+ characters without fanfare, the insistence on Jewish MCs, allusions to liberal policies/politics, and yummy yummy yummy romance. And let’s be honest: they are seriously sex-positive and I dig that! They are also body positive and just SELF-positive in general. I. Love. Rachel. Lynn. Solomon. Love. 💜💜💜📚
My new favorite romance book, my new favorite book of this year. A new favorite author even yeah I think so.
This book was everything I didn't know I needed. A cute romance between a nerd actor and a writer. Some spicy scenes 🥵 I mean come on now they were (chef's kiss). Anxiety and ocd representation, Jewish representation, older main characters.
I was in love with or main characters from the beginning pretty much and the story only made me love them more. I think I might even have a crush on both Chandler and Finn, I mean I would not turn down a date with either one of them.
I can't wait to read more books form this author , they have been on my list but knowing they could be just as good will hopefully help me read them quicker.
This was really fun and funny and clearly had a lot of love for the fandom/con culture that was described. Great to have two Jewish leads as well, and to have them spend time talking about the ways in which their Judaism impacts them. More romantic heroes should have rabbis for mothers! That said, this is a lot, for a lack of better terms, “spicier” than some of Solomon’s other books, which isn’t always my vibe. Great for people who love it, just not for me. Still enjoyed and will recommend, but worth noting.
Rachel Lynn Solomon wrote the most chaotic, nerdy, Teen Wolf fanfiction romance of my dreams. I adored this book. Flipping so many tropes on their end and flipping the gender norms, Solomon's Business or Pleasure is sure to delight everyone. When a one-night stand goes so horribly wrong, Chandler hopes to never see Finn ever again. Much to her horror, she realizes that she's been hired to ghostwrite his memoir. While they travel around together (love that forced proximity), Finn enlists the help of Chandler to help him in his bedroom skills. This book was so horny, humorous and hopeful. I loved every word. RLS never lets me down.
This one honestly wasn’t her best, but I still really liked it! It was cute, sweet, funny, and spicy even. And I loved the whole premise!
Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group, Let's Talk Books, and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy and to PRH Audio for the complimentary audiobook. These opinions are my own.
Wow! This is my new favorite from Rachel Lynn Solomon. I didn't think it was possible for me to prefer one to The Ex Talk, but she's done it. (And it doesn't hurt that there's a quick shout out to The Ex Talk hidden in the plot.)
Chandler Cohen is a journalist turned ghostwriter. Finn is an actor looking for a ghostwriter to work with him to write his memoir. I really enjoyed that the formatting included fun little inserts from his acting career and her writing.
I greatly appreciated the representation of both OCD and generalized anxiety disorder. More than that, I was grateful for how mental health stigma was addressed.
This book is for all my friends who enjoy some steam in their romance. It starts with a literal bang and the worst steamy scene I have ever read. To be clear, that's not a negative critique of the book. It was intended to be. I laughed and cringed throughout.
In fact, this book made me laugh out loud so many times. And it also made me so emotional. Chandler and Finn felt so real to me. At times, it was a bit uncomfortable listening in public, but I could not make myself stop and found myself distracted at work.
Hathaway Lee did an amazing job narrating the first person POV from Chandler's perspective. The audiobook was excellent.
This book starts out great and ends great. You’ll go from blushing to laughing to blushing again at least I did. I highly recommend this. I flew through this book I loved the characters and this book. This will make a great summer read. And What a great release day 4th of July because the spice in this book will make you see fireworks.
I’m three for three with the authors books now, she seriously writes some of the most consistent enjoyable romances and I look forward to her new release every year. She blends so many aspects together to deliver the cutest and most heartfelt romances and this one was just as good for me as her last two books. Similar to her last book the representation here was amazing and somehow felt fresh and different even though the subjects covered were similar. You get Jewish rep and mental health rep and neither feel unnatural or forced into the story just to check some boxes but rather really compliment the characters and make them all the more relatable and authentic. I mean their one night stand is hands down the most cringe worthy sex scene I’ve ever read and somehow I was still rooting for them haha. Top notch wit and banter, eventual great chemistry, a mature and realistic relationship and a side of angst made this a pretty perfect read for me.
The initial encounter between Chandler and Drew had me absolutely CACKLING and I’m all in to see where their working relationship goes. Rachel Lynn Solomon is absolutely an auto-buy author for me and I’m really grateful I received an early copy—Business or Pleasure comes out July 4! If you are an elder millennial (such as myself) it almost feels like you’re reading conversations you had with your best friend and it’s just so comforting and wonderful.
*I received an e-arc from the publisher via Netgalley for review. Thank you to Berkley and Netgalley. All thoughts are my own*
Content warnings from Rachel Lynn Solomon on Goodreads:
- explicit sex, including some light kink
- abortion (past)
- parental abandonment and emotional abuse (past)
- on-page panic attack
I just loved this standalone from one of my favorites, Rachel Lynn Solomon! This was my second adult romance I've read from her, and it didn't disappoint. If you enjoy romcoms, I think you'll really enjoy this one!
Chandler Cohen is a ghostwriter. She attends the book signing of the latest book that she wrote, and the author doesn't even recognize her! Things take an interesting turn when she decides to go to the bar and she meets a really cute guy that she instantly connects with. They have a one-night stand that turns awkward, as it's the worst sex she's ever had and she decides that this night is best to be forgotten.
The most inconceivable thing happens, when Chandler goes to her next interview for a new ghostwriting project. Her next project is writing a memoir for Finn Walsh, and actor from a cult classic werewolf show who now makes a living appearing at fan conventions across the country. Finn winds up being the guy from her one-night stand! He still hires her on to write his memoir.
Chandler wants to keep things as professional as possible between her and Finn. However, she winds up admitting to him that their night together wasn't exactly mind-blowing, and Finn is distraught. They strike up an unusual bargain. When they're not working on the book, Chandler will teach him about sex and pleasing a woman. Things become complicated as they become closer both in and out of the bedroom.
I adored Chandler and Finn! I loved that in this story Finn, although he's an actor and gorgeous, he lacks in the bedroom and Chandler is the one to teach him the ropes about being a good lover. He starts out as this completely embarrassed individual, but he's willing to learn from a woman, and that was so refreshing. I wish these things would be normalized, as not everyone is perfect, and we can always learn. I loved that Chandler took the job with Finn, even after having an awful encounter with him, and that she was so willing to help him learn.
I loved that this book has good anxiety and OCD rep! As someone who has anxiety, it's great to read books that have good rep.
I hope that you'll check out Business or Pleasure and add it to your summer TBR! It's the perfect romcom for the beach or vacation.
I couldn't stop laughing while reading this.
Business or Pleasure is an absolutely fun and addictive read. I loved our two main characters, and their banter?!?! Amazing. I also really loved how this book deals with mental health (there is OCD and generalized anxiety disorder rep). It both gave the topics the seriousness and focus they require, while also still maintaining its lighthearted tone. It was the perfect balance.
If you're looking for something full of heart, humor, and spice, this is the book for you.
I read Weather Girl last year, and it ended up being one of my favorite romances of the year, so obviously i was dying to get my hands on this one. It did NOT disappoint!!!
Recently heart broken, Chandler, is 31 years old and working as a ghost writer where she feels under appreciated. After a book signing for an influencer she worked for, she met a boy (turned one night stand) with past she awkwardly uncovers the following day.
Honestly, i think that's all you really need to know. I read the first couple of sentences of the synopsis, so around the 20% mark when she figures out who her one night stand really is, I was actually surprised by it--which i really enjoyed.
I absolutely LOVED our main characters, and their relationship. Great mental health rep. I'm so happy i picked it up. This was my second book by Rachel Lynn Solomon, and my second five star from her.
I read another book by Rachel Lynn Solomon that I really enjoyed, but I had a few issues with it, so I was excited to give the author another try. As a non-practicing Jewish woman, I am intrigued by books that have Jewish characters, especially stories that don’t center around the religion. Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon was just that. Their religion was hardly even discussed, but it’s nice seeing my own kind in a story.
Chandler Cohen (heroine) is a ghostwriter. It’s not her dream career, but it pays the bills. One night she attends a book signing for a book she wrote for the “author” over email. The author had no idea who she was. While drowning her sorrow at the bar, she meets a very handsome man and spends the night with him. He seemed like the perfect guy until they had sex. And it was really bad, so she planned to never see him again.
Until…surprise! Her next job is ghostwriting his autobiography.
Finn Walsh was relatively obscure actor from a beloved werewolf TV show and now makes his living going to all the Comicon-type festivals around the country. He is vegan and has OCD so his story is a little more interesting than the average C-list actor. As they work together, Chandler finally tells Finn that she didn’t enjoy their night together at all, and he is truly surprised. Nobody ever told him he wasn’t good in bed before.
For a twist on the norm, Finn enlists Chandler to teach him how to be good in bed. I loved that Finn was still alpha, but he had no idea how to please a woman, not because he is selfish, but because he truly didn’t know what he was doing. Women were so wowed by the fact they were banging a hot actor that they never told him! Let me tell you, he was a quick learner, and it got pretty spicy. I loved Finn. He was nerdy and sweet and still very sexy.
“You’re just . . . so smart. So nice. And you wear socks when you shouldn’t and take me to sex shops and read books about people killing each other with poisoned pastries.”
Because Chandler was writing Finn’s story, we got to really get to know him, and I liked that he pushed to know her just as well. I really enjoyed reading a book where the tables are turned for a change, but the same issue plagued this story as the last one by this author. What started out really strong just fizzled out a bit at the end. Something also held me back from being 100% invested, but I have yet to put my finger on it.
I really liked Chandler. I loved that she was experienced in bed and there was no shaming. I loved that she had a lot of personal growth she still needed to go through. And I loved Finn and how eager he was to learn while still being sexy and manly.
“Because he is someone worthy of a memoir, and in my lowest moments, sometimes I feel like a blank page.”
Likes:
•Books about books are my favorite!(see my list)
•I love that this was real, not everyone is great in bed just because they are hot. It was great to see the heroine teach the hero for a change!
•Both the hero and heroine were Jewish but that wasn’t really the focus of the story at all, they just happened to be Jewish.
•The real-life representation. He is vegan and OCD (germ-based), she has anxiety and has had an abortion. All of these topics were handled with care.
•A diverse cast of side characters.
•Their relationship was so healthy!
•I love how they encouraged each other to take some risks, both personally and professionally.
•Scenes were spicy and there were plenty, but they didn’t overwhelm the story at all.
Dislikes:
•Something was missing. I think I just never really felt the connection enough.
•The ending seemed to fizzle out a bit.
The Down & Dirty:
I love books about books, and Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon added the unique aspect of the heroine teaching the hero how to perform better in the bedroom. It also featured Jewish characters who both suffered from some mental health issues that were handled very well. It was a fun and unique storyline with very real likable characters. While it didn’t stand out to me as the best of the best, Business or Pleasure was a solid 4 stars for me.
Rating: 4 Stars, 3.5 Heat
Solomon does it again! She perfectly interweaves mental health, romance, sex positivity, identity, Judaism, and not having it all together in your late 20s early 30s…the boomer and gen x dream of adulthood is DEAD and I love that Solomon always has MCs that we can truly relate to in that regard.
With, what I think, is her spiciest book to date…Solomon has us fall in love with Finn and Chandler from their very awkward, but relatable to many, beginning to their spicy sweet love story where they open up and trust one another to jump.
I highly recommend this novel to all who love a book they can swoon and fan themself to. 💕
I really enjoyed this one! There were just so many new and refreshing ideas that it made this book stand out against other romances.
Both characters had such fun jobs (ghostwriter and c-list actor) and it added an interesting layer to the story. I loved that this book started with a bad one night stand rather than your typical meet cute. Again, it made the book different.
I loved all of the deep conversations surrounding sexuality, mental health, and religion. These topics are often not explored to in-depth in romance books and it made the book much deeper. I loved how real both Chandler and Finn were with all of their flaws. I truly believed in their relationship and was fully invested.
Overall and really fun, spicy, and deep romance book!
