Let me tell you, I LOVED this short story. It's sweet, wholesome and cosy, the art style is beautiful. There is so much colour! The story is about the garden sprite Wisteria who arrives in a new town and really wants to help out one of the local girls Elena in making her garden prettier and taking care of the flowers.
5/5 stars! I wish the story was longer!
I loved this title. I thought the story was great and easy to lose yourself in. I loved the art as well. I would love to see these little sprites in my garden! I hope there are subsequent titles about the garden sprites.
I don't have any criticisms about this one.
Gorgeous artwork accompanies this fairly simple story about a garden sprite who helps a human reinvigorate their garden as a gift to their busy mother. While this isn't a new favorite, I recommend picking this up for the art, especially if you're looking for a light, fairly stress-free read.
The Sprite and the Gardener is about an unlikely partnership between a sprite who is new in town and a girl eager to make her mother smile. The art is filled with pink, yellow, and purple hues and character sketches that will leave you staring at one page for several minutes to take it all in.
I loved the whimsical and cozy nature of this beautiful book. I would buy prints of so many of the scenes because they are that vivid and eye-catching. If you enjoyed graphic novels like The Tea Dragon Society by K. O’Neill or Taproot by Keezy Young, I think you will love this story too.
This would be a lovely series exploring more of the world of sprites, which we didn’t get to see much of. I think a prequel would be nice so we could see what the world was like when sprites participated more in gardening.
Pick up this book if you enjoy cozy stories with vibrant art on every page!
Thank you NetGalley and Oni Press for early access of The Sprite and the Gardener.
The Sprite and the Gardener will be release April 4th, 2023.

This book warmed my heart. The Sprite and the Gardener is a short graphic novel with beautiful art. I really enjoyed the color choices for the art, and the story is so cute.
It’s about sprites who have taken a step back from helping humans and their gardens. But one sprite, wisteria, who’s new to this grouping of sprite, decides to help a girl who is struggling with her mothers garden and they bond, things look bright for both the sprites and the human girl. This has become one of my short comfort reads.
Thank you Rii Abrego and Joe Whitt for a wonderful visual story.
This graphic novel tells the story of Wisteria, a sprite who doesn’t feel like she quite belongs with the others. Sprites used to take care of nature, but now that humans are around, their jobs as gardeners aren’t as important. Then, Wisteria stumbles on a human who definitely needs some magic in their garden and things start to change.
I loved the themes of belonging and friendship in this graphic novel. The authors manage to tell a meaningful story alongside the beautiful art. The art uses a lot of pink and purples so I found it particularly eye-catching due to loving those colors!
Thank you to NetGalley, Oni Press, and authors, Joe Whitt and Rii Abrego, for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review. This is a debut graphic novel that is delightful. The story follows a new-to-town sprite, Wysteria who struggles to fit in with the other sprites. She wants to return to the old ways of spirtes more directly caretaking for nature with their magic. The illustrations were angelic and beautiful.
This was my first graphic novel! And i absolutely loved it! The artwork was beautiful. I liked how the author showed how the drawings started off. So not only was the graphic art wonderful, but the story line was also very heart-warming. It is great for the transition from a children book to a more complex story line. I would recommend this to an early teen.
This was such a sweet story! The illustrations were delightful and the characters were lovely. I'd share this with readers who are looking for a story that gives you warmth and comfort.
Such a beautifully illustrated story! The art style! The colors! Simplicity at its finest, I truly cannot convey what a joy this was not only to read but to revel in the art as well. Whether you are a lover of all things fae or gardening, anyone would find themselves in a child-like wonder while reading this story. Rii Abrego finds it possible to create mysticism and whimsy in such a short story; I couldn't stop myself from smiling the entire time! This would be perfect for all graphic novel readers of all ages, and I will definitely be putting this on my list for my library!
the art style alone has to be one of my favourites i've ever seen. the cover was what caught my eye; incredibly adorable and visually appealing and i was not disappointed when i read through because the story is just as cute.
the use of the pastel colours against brighter, stronger colours especially the pinks and purples with the greens was stunning but there were a few times where it was slightly difficult to interpret the scene, to figure out what exactly was happening. very lighthearted but with a lovely message - working together to create something beautiful.
i also enjoyed that each little sprite had its own personality through their name, appearance and mannerisms.
a short read but totally wholesome with stunning illustrations and a wonderful overarching message, it's okay not being able to do absolutely everything and it's okay to ask for help.
One step at a time.
Cozy fantasy graphic novel with amazing artwork.
If you're in the mood for something easy to read, cozy, and charming, look no further! This is such a sweet story. The stakes are incredibly low. The whole thing really warms the heart and puts you in a good mood for the rest of the day. It's like cottage core packaged with the most beautiful illustrations ever.
Each of the characters has their own unique, beautiful design and it makes me love them all. I could look at the artwork all day.
I look forward to more graphic novels from both members of this team!
Star Rating: 4.5/5
Tropes: Cozy fantasy
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The artwork is beautiful and the plot is sweet, I wish there were more of it then what is there. It felt cut short.
The Sprite and the Gardner by Rii Abrego and Joe Whitt is beautifully illustrated graphic novel. The story follows the decline and rise of Sprites in the world. After the humans arrive and start taking over gardening, they feel like they don't really have a place in the world anymore. But once they figure out they can all work together with the human gardners, things become better than ever!
I love the beautiful pastel illustrations throughout the novel. It's important to remember that we all have an important role in this world to help take care of our gardens.
Thank you NetGalley and Oni Press for proving the ARC in exchange of my honest review.
As soon as I saw the cover, I had to read it because this book has the cutest art. The story was equally cute and wholesome. I devoured it in one sitting. It was so heartwarming and adorable.
Anyone looking for a cute and light graphic novel should pick it up, I promise it will not disappoint.
Lovely little book.
Amazing drawings and a nice simple heart warming story.
Lovely way of showing gardening and connecting with nature
This is gorgeous! Love the colors and the style. The story is precious as well. Elena and Wisteria are too cute
This was way too cute. I loved that the kid wanted to find his way back to his mom through growing life than through distraction. The story felt relevant to our current world while also being whimsical and fantastical alt the same time. The colours were pretty and the illustrations were unique and fun.
The Sprite and the Gardener was such a delightful surprise! The story follows Wisteria, a sprite who comes to a new area and unintentionally befriends a gardener she tries to help. As a result, it positively changes the neighborhood in ways neither could have anticipated. I absolutely loved the artwork and story, as well as all of the characters that unique and lovable! A great read and I would love to read more!
What a gorgeous little story. Heartwarming and beautifully crafted. I adore the illustrations. But that cover ...! From a distance, all you can see is a reddish blob. The artist is so talented when it comes to colour and foreground/background ... I think a simple palette swap could fix it ...
