This was such a sweet and succinct story. The sprite was such a lovely character, dreaming of an idyllic past while connecting her fellow sprites and humans in the present. I appreciated the communal experience of all the sprites trusting her and joining in on this garden venture. It wasn't a complicated story, it was just fluffy enough. I would definitely read this again and get prints of all the gorgeous artwork!
This comic was lovely! Filled with gentle cottagecore vibes and a cozy story, this is a comic to cuddle up with and bask in the feeling of.
The Sprite and the Gardener is a fantastic world rendered in a dreamy and welcoming style. A magic story that would be welcome in school libraries, with lovely themes.
This was my second time reading this and oh lord I loved it even more a second time. Such a timeless story of family, hobbies, and keeping care of the things we love.
I will be recommending this to all of my friends! I love this book!
This is a heartwarming and fast read with a pretty simple plot, but I found myself rereading pages just because they were so beautiful. The character designs are just gorgeous! And the plants! I enjoyed the lack of conflict, the way the ending and beginning tie together so nicely, and this amazing color palette and art style. I don’t want to give away any of the plot, because I really think everyone should read this one, but it’s amazing!
This was such a cute and wholesome story. It's quite short, but I think even then it does a great job of introducing the setting and the characters. The art style was also really cute and the color palette matched with the story in a nice way.
An ADORABLE debut graphic novel about a sprite wanting to help out a young gardener! Every frame of this comic is absolutely GORGEOUS and the characters and world are extremely endearing and loveable! While I wish this was longer so that we could've seen more of this magical sprite-filled world, I think this is a beautiful lil graphic novel perfect for all ages <3
Thank you so much NetGalley and Oni Press for the beautiful arc!
This is a short, cute, and beautiful story! I was expecting there to be some conflict between the sprites, and it was nice that they weren't what I thought they would be. I need to see these beautiful illustrations in print!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
The Sprite and the Gardener is short and sweet, and full of whimsy! The plot is simple but such a sweet read. A little sprite, feeling a bit like an outsider amount her sprite counterparts, discovers she has a love for gardening. The plot lovingly espouses the joys of community, togetherness, and nurturing plants. I do love how the opening ties in so beautifully with the ending. I don't want to say a lot, for fear of spoiling the plot. I am so in love with the art! The characters all have such wonderful designs, and I love the fashion of the sprites. The vibrant colors are gorgeous as well! I remember seeing the original inspiration for this comic years ago and adored it, so I'm so happy it got made into a full book!
The Sprite and the Gardener follows Wisteria, an (adorable) sprite, who wishes she could be like her ancestors and use her magical talents to help take care of gardens and nature which is also referred to as life.
Firstly the art style and the colours are amazingly beautiful and detailed; every page is so skilfully drawn it mesmerizingly draws you into the, cutest sprite, Wisteria's magical journey. The original sketches at the end are incredibly fun and interesting to look at and offer an insight to the original stages behind the final design. I just love the aesthetic of the story and how the drawings match perfectly with the colours seemingly to bring the characters to life.
Secondly the storyline, although only short, is complexly detailed and fleshes out a wonderful story which manages to incorporate important morals about friendship, family and remembering history. I also love the optimism throughout the story, the sprites may lose their original purpose but adapt and continue to live happy lives. This makes this a reread for any day or time, especially if you need a pick-me-up. I can't recommend this enough.
Puts the cute in meet-cute!
That was the only scene I liked, unfortunately. This graphic novel looks and sounds better than it actually is. Even the artwork looks nicer on the cover. The storyline lacks depth and is disappointingly basic. There's not much of a narrative and zero conflict. I loved the bursts of colours though.
Despite its short length, I was never fully into this book. It was not the wholesome read that it set out to be and did not engage me. Those looking for a quick and fluffy read might enjoy this more.
Charming! The illustrations, coloring, and panelling were all lovely. The story was very sweet, but fairly slight - the titular sprite and gardener both learn that working together can be more fun than working alone. Excellent for readers of any age looking for a cozy, beautifully illustrated story.
This book is not only absolutely lovely in its illustration, it is a sweet, wholesome story. There are positive messages about following your passions and working in harmony with nature and your community, and the celebration of natural beauty and hard work is well-executed.
My only comment on the book is that I wish there was a bit more. There were sections of the books that needed more explanation and seemed to move in ways that were a bit too quick and felt unearned. This is definitely fine for very young readers, but even middle-grade readers might find themselves wishing for just a bit more nuance.
The Sprite and the Gardener tells the heartwarming story of Wisteria, a little garden sprite who just wants to help tend to the plants around the neighborhood she's moved to. When she discovers her own power via helping a local gardener, she realizes that success is far more rewarding when done with friends.
The art absolutely drew me to this graphic novel. Once I saw the cover I knew I had to take a peek inside and I'm happy to say it's exactly all I hoped it would be! The art is so soft, wistful, and reminds me of a Studio Ghibli film. It has a lot of pastel colors that play off the natural settings and the designs for the sprites are fun and interesting to look at.
I also really adored how the story set up Wisteria's anxiety around being in groups from the beginning and showed her movement from working alone, to helping Elena, to finally working with friends. The characters were lighthearted and the topics were gentle enough for all ages to enjoy. The ending was incredibly heart-warming and exactly what I'd expect from an Oni Press book; a graphic novel full to the brim with warmth and coziness.
Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for providing me with a copy for an honest review!
Wisteria is new in town and doesn't feel like she fits in. She notices a gardener struggling to get their flowers to grow well and decides to help out in secret. She wonders why fairies stopped gardening, but her friends are happy with the way things are now. One day, Wisteria falls asleep after a night filled with gardening and is discovered by the gardener, Elena. Elena is a bit upset because she thought she was becoming a better gardener. She wants to improve the garden for her mother who doesn't have time to garden anymore. Wisteria offers to work with Elena to improve the garden and her skills. Eventually, the other sprites join in. The neighborhood gardens have never looked better.
Thank you, Oni Press, for the advance reading copy.
This is such a short beautiful read. It felt so comforting reading this graphic novel as the characters are quite wholesome. They are magical as well! I feel the cover can do better as the contents have so much more than what it seems.
It’s the story of our magical sprites community whose responsibility is to protect the plants and nurture them. And here’s one small boy who wants to do something responsible and wanted to feel accomplished doing something good all by himself!
Such a good story flanked with magical, beautiful artstyle.
Definitely go for this graphic novel.
So sweet, and the art is absolutely stunning <3 the story could’ve been more fleshed out but I honestly just had a great time being plopped right into this adorable world for a while. Thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for the review copy!

What a breath of fresh air! It’s a story between Sprites and humans working as a team to create something together. The colors and styles used with the story line was such a delight and wouldn’t mind picking this book up again and read with my little ones. Such a fun and quick read. So lovely!
Thank you Netgalley and Oni Press for sharing such a delightful novel to review.

In the utterly charming graphic novel, THE SPRITE AND THE GARDENER, gardening sprites are not quite as needed as they once were. People have taken it upon themselves to tame nature, and so sprites spend their days enjoying sun rays and finding the prettiest blossoms. Wisteria, a sprite new to the area, finds herself on the outside of the local group and eventually begins trying to help a failing flower garden flourish.
This is a story with a lovely moral about friendship and opening yourself up to new possibilites. The artwork is just... stunning-- every page feels like it's own masterpiece. Lush and so vivid it feels like you could just step into the picture, TSATG is a true delight to read and experience. This books is perfect for people who love beautiful graphic novels, elementary or middle school readers, or people who want to live in a Studio Ghibli film!!
I adored the art style of this graphic novel, and the colour scheme was stunning. The story was cute, but there really wasn’t a lot of plot and I would’ve preferred for the novel to be a bit longer.
