This is my first book by Charlie Gallagher, and I was worried that without having read the other books I might be in trouble. I was glad to see that this wasn't the case and can't wait to read more.
The story revolves around Maddie and Vince, police officers dealing with murders. The weird thing is that these murders are taking place in twos, and the method is anything but ordinary.
One of the murder houses leaves a survivor, an 11 year old girl who was hiding under the floorboards. But why was she allowed to live? The story flows well with a good plot and strong characters.
on the edge of my seat for the whole thing.
I almost didn’t read this when I realised it was book number 8 of a series featuring Maddie Ives but I am so glad I did as it is one of the better books I’ve read in 2022, it didn’t matter that it is part of a series as it works quite well as a standalone without loads of references to previous stories to become distracting but I enjoyed it so much that I am going to go back to the beginning and start listening to the series with Maddie on audiobooks, the characters were well written and relatable and I look forward to the next instalment
Another brilliant book from Charlie Gallagher. This addition to the Maddie Ives series is an excellent read with a well developed plot and characters. Highly recommended.

wasn't totally sure if this was a standalone and after finishing I have discovered it is not. It was alright though. Not a bad crime thriller.

#8 Maddie Ives
Again I’ve read the series out of order. It’s predominantly a UK police procedural, but the characters are so well fleshed the reader is invested in them and their lives. It reads well as a standalone.
My attention was grabbed immediately at the start. What a beginning! It also has a full on ending.
I like both Vinnie and Maddie, there’s good character depth to them. It’s got good emotional depth as Vinnie’s sister is ill. I do like a book that explores emotions, and coping with the harsh things life throws at us. The emotional intensity ramps up. It tugged on my emotions, at one point there were tears 🥲 I love Eileen, I think the civilian IT support analyst is my favourite, although the team gel together so well.
There are 2 similar cases the first Vinnie attended to find a young girl under the floor, with her mother dead. Within a few days Maddie is called to a similar scene this time a husband and wife are both dead.
We hear from several points of view, as it progresses it becomes evident how they are connected.
I’m becoming a fan of Maddie Ives, and highly recommend this one.
I don't think I've ever been so chilled to the bone from the first page to the last by a book. The pace never lets up with one spine tingling moment following another...I'm pretty sure I'm suffering from ptsd this morning ! The prose is so gritty and raw I could almost taste the dust falling into my mouth as I cowered under the floorboards coffin alongside Jade. Charlie Gallagher always brings an immediacy and urgency with the reader gasping down each page to reach the conclusion. After all the drama, emotion and terror I was surprised to actually cry at the last page. Prose is a powerful weapon in the hands of this master storyteller.highly recommend
Books like this are the reason I love thrillers! It's a bit police procedural but woth a cast of characters that aren't your stereotypical normal worn down police that you so often read about. There are a fair few characters in the book and it did take a minute to get all the names and such sorted but omg! Ots so cleverly written with multiple storyline weaving throughout. It's one of those books that gets under you skin and I found myself woth tears in my eyes more than once...... not something you usually find with "thrillers". The characters are just so very human and even though it's fiction, there are still soke.very relatable themes throughout. It starts with a bang and just keeps on throwing out the twists and turns the whole way through. I have now had no choice but to download every other book in the series so I can start from book 1 and work my way through.....aswell as all the authors other published books.to date! Guess I'll be busy for quite some time!! This book is what all thrillers aspire to be
A fascinating plot with a twist to leave you gasping! The different perspectives brought to bear made this compelling reading and the growth in the main characters, including more information on their private lives, made for a very engaging book.
I found this a little slow to.start with but, halfway through it perked up and got exciting. I enjoyed it in the end. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
A fast paced, twisty and action packed thriller. it kept me reading and surprised me with each turns.
A bit slow at the beginning.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read an action packed thriller! It was a fast paced and kept me guessing throughout! The characters, were likeable as well!
Overall I throughly enjoyed this book and all the plot twists that it presented.
10/10
Absolutely brilliant, fast paced, edgy drama based on an original, solid and interesting story.
Murders are taking place, two in a row and the method is odd. At one house a mother is found dead, stabbed multiple times, but her young daughter is alive under the floorboards albeit severely traumatised. It is like the victims knew what was coming, but how or why could they?
There is the right level of gore and violence for me, not too gratuitous but incredibly sinister and scary. The plot is ingenious and well developed and the characters are very real and likeable, apart from the bad guys obviously and we also feel an empathy for their situations. I didn’t guess the various twists and was pretty much on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. Wholeheartedly recommend and going to look up more titles by the author.
At first I struggled to get into the book but when I did I was pleasantly surprised. A little long and drawn out but over all kept me guessing!
This is a cleverly constructed police drama exposing the merky world of drug criminals and how ordinary professional families get drawn into the crime underworld.
I enjoyed it because it's full of hard hitting, fast paced drama with plenty of surprises and twists, which I didn't see coming. One not to be missed.
THE GIRL UNDER THE FLOOR by Charlie Gallagher.
Detective Maddie Ives book 8.
Saturday morning. A rare day off for Detective Maddie Ives. She’s about to have a relaxing shower with her boyfriend Vince when she gets the call: There’s been another one… Ron and Sandy Blackman’s brutalised bodies are found in the hallway of their isolated rural home. They’ve been stabbed multiple times; Ron’s hands are tied tightly behind his back; Sandy has several fingernails ripped out. The safe has been forced open.
Brilliant read. Love this author. Love the cover. 5*.
Good book! This book had suspense, intrigue, action, great police work and a sort of a who done it! The storyline was very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I will definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
The Girl Under the Floor by Charlie Gallagher is quite a gripping crime thriller with a great twist, as described. There is such great emotion weaved into the scenes. The grief and wording and the characters actions had me in tears in several places.
Maddie and her team are in a race against time. A couple's brutalized bodies are found in their home's hallway. This is the second house of horrors that Maddie and her team have been called out to in a matter of days. Four days earlier, a single mother was also stabbed to death in her own home. Maddie's partner Vince was first on the scene. He finds the lady's traumatized daughter, Jade, trapped under the floorboards.
The key to the mystery lies with eleven-year-old Jade.
There are so many touching moments in the book that had me in tears. Between Vince dealing with his sick sister, his nephew, and then Jade and what she went through brought many real moments and heart-wrenching scenes.
The story had a great atmosphere, and the characters were quite interesting and well-developed.
I need to go back and read some of the earlier books in this series, but I would recommend this book. I did not feel I missed anything by not reading some of the earlier books.
I would recommend this book and this author. I read this book in one day; I could not put it down once I started. I needed to know what was going to happen, and I was really invested in the character relationships and how everything played out.
A 5 out of 5 stars.
