Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
OMG!!! This book was exactly what I wanted it to be! I loved it. I will make sure to check out other books by this author. When I requested this I was just intrigued by the concept of it and I loved how it turned out. This story had a great plot and if you have read this and enjoyed it, This was so much. It was such a great story. I would say give this one a try. I will continue to follow this author. Way to go to this author for not letting me down.
I highly enjoyed the narrator of the audiobook. Kept me listening.

I realized that I just don't care enough to slog through the rest of this book just to know how it ends.
Nothing. Happened. It's painfully clear that this is a transition book between the first and third installments. More frustrating still, Rollins would end one group's POV on a cliffhanger, transition to the other group's POV (which also ended on a cliffhanger), only to come back to group one and find an anticlimactic answer.
I was so excited at the idea this series presented... but it unfortunately fell flat on its face. Sci-fi and fantasy are my favourite genres, so you'd think a beautiful combination of the two would tickle me pink. The prospect of this series did just that, but the unfortunately this nearly 700 page book turned out to be a waste of my time.
I feel like this book has a lot going for it but I struggled. I finished the first book in the series and found the same thing. I really pushed to get through both of them because I should have liked them! They ticked all the boxes but I just was not hooked. I will say this book is better than the first by a long shot. But this is still my first DNF of the year. When I got listening it was ok and there are some great things coming. But when I put it down I completely forgot about it. The first book took me over 21 days to finish and I had to rerequest it through my library app. I couldn’t finish this one in 21 days either AND NOT because they are such large books. I crush +30 hour audiobooks. I tried I had high hopes. I don’t think the books are bad, but just not for me I guess.
The Cradle of Ice by James Rollins is the second book in the moonfall series. This was a chonker. The audio is read by Nicola Barber with the same perfection as book 1. I loved the narration but I was not as hooked on the plot. I felt the writing was overly tied up in length, extended dialogue and descriptives. The meat of the story was what I love in my fantasies with action, the connection between girl and loveable beast, a little romance and revelations. Overall a mixed bag of feelings but still entertaining. True rating 3.5/5.
I'm a huge fan of James Rollins, and have ready every book in the Sigma Force, Order of the Sanguines and Tucker Wayne series as well as all of his stand alone books.
But, try as I might, I just can't get into the Moon Fall series. I made it through the first book, and gave this huge book a good try but I have to admit defeat.
I have no doubt that this is a great book, and that fantasy fans will really enjoy it. Sadly, I think this genre is just not for me.
I really appreciate the chance to try this audiobook. I found the narrator's voice a little flat, and that didn't help. especially since this is a very long recording.
Looking forward to the next in the Sigma series,

This is an exhilarating follow-up to the first book in the Moonfall series, continuing the saga with a story that explores themes of bravery, loyalty, and the timeless battle of good versus evil. Rollins once again succeeds in weaving together a riveting narrative, marked by his signature blend of scientific intrigue and nail-biting action sequences.
A ragtag group of characters - a soldier, a thief, a lost prince, and a young girl - face escalating challenges and threats. The story has intriguing scientific and historical elements, making it as thought-provoking as it is exciting. The impending apocalypse and the race against time add a constant sense of urgency, propelling the narrative forward at breakneck speed.
Overall, this is a masterful example of storytelling by a raconteur who is at the top of his game.
Fans of Jordan's Wheel of Time will enjoy this series by Jame Rollins. A fantay novel with a science fiction history It's an interesting concept, along with the idea of a planet with a rotational problem. While it was a struggle initially getting into the second book (lots of characters to re remember), once I started to remember who was who from book one, it was a great story. I enjoyed this read.

This book had a lot of the issues I didn't like about the first one. Bland characters, poor female characters, and a pretty boring plot. I probably wouldn't have read this without a review copy but I was hopeful the second book could capture my interest more. Alas, I struggled with this one too much.
There were a lot of new characters added to this book, to the point that it was somewhat difficult to keep track of them (and I've read Game of Thrones and was fine with that list). I think it's because many of the characters seemed not to have much significance to the story and really didn't need to be there. I think the book could have had about 300 pages cut out of it and still told the same story.
Cradle of Ice picks up where The Starless Crown left off. The characters head off in two different directions. Nyx and her crew discover another whole world they didn’t realize existed out in the icy part of the planet. Kanthe heads into a rival kingdom to marrying a princess and find another bronze figure.
There are many transitions between these two groups and Kanthe’s twin and scheming sub characters. The transitions were often abrupt.
The story does progress quite a bit and there is situational resolution which is great. The larger issue of moon fall will require at least one more book if not more.
I listened to Cradle of Ice. The narrator does a great job. It did take a long time to get through 26 hours of listening.
Thanks to Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to review Cradle of Ice.
This is how you do a book 2! The plot was so fast-paced and exciting compared to the first one. There's betrayal, heartbreak, triumph, surprises all packed into this book.
There are a lot of characters but I never felt lost like I have in some other epic fantasies. I cannot wait for the next one.
I was unsure if I would be able to get through this one since I struggled with the first book, but this one is better. I would highly recommend this for lovers of fantasy and amazing world-building.
Once again James Rollins doesn't disappoint. I'm mainly just sad that I now have to wait for the next book. This books picks up sgortly after the first with the characters we already know now seperated by different quests, and kept me interested throughout. He has introduced new characters for me to love and I can't wait to hopefully meet more in the future.
Would you rather have a multi-month voyage to a freezing cold or scorching hot landscape?
"The Cradle of Ice" by James Rollins is book 2 in the Moonfall series. After getting the information at the end of the first the crew...takes time and actually plans where to go and time passes. One group, heads into the frozen wastes, where explorers never return from. The other, to seek an alliance with an empire at war with the kingdom. Both tasks are vital to obtaining knowledge and power to survive Moonfall.
Narrated by Nicola Barber, illegally excellcet voice. Going from pithy lines to emotional highs and lows superbly.
Thank you Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the copies!
Reasons to read:
-More information on the world before it lost chunks of history
-New and flirty allies
-OH he crazy-crazy
-Societies that are unique to my fantasy reading
-Excellent animals
-Stakes got higher again
-They took some time and grew a bit
Cons:
-A bit rough on the animals still for my taste, points at animal welfare science degree
This is the second installment in the Moonfall series and is just as action packed and intense. We get to explore more of the world and there are even more giant bats. The moon is still on a collision course with the planet and our heros still aren't sure what they are going to do or even can do about it. Meanwhile, war is breaking out everywhere. It's an edge of your seat adventure the whole way through.
Narrated by Nicola Barber who did a fantastic job.
As always I am astonished by the sheer brilliance of Rollins writing ability.
Thank you James Rollins, NetGalley, & Macmillian Audio for the Audio ARC.
Rollins epic tales would give Tolkien a run for his money, and I must say his stories are quite a bit more action packed and thus loads more entertaining to read. Considering the journey I've just undergone (having just finished reading it), I must say I am, in the very best of ways, exhausted. This series is a HUGE commitment and the reader should know this going in.
A LOT happens and since the story is told from quite a bit (too many) POV's you aren't just taken on one journey, but a half dozen (I can't even remember how many at this point). So, be prepared and hunker down because at a whopping 26+ hours this audio book is a beast. STILL, if you are as much of a fan of epic fantasy adventures as I, then you will be satisfied with your commitment. I will ask the author to please shorten the next just a bit because I did mark in my own notes that there were quite a few occasions where scenes became a bit overdone and could be shortened and that some inner monologues. Also, there is quite a bit too many similar battle scenes that could be omitted.
All that said I am still giving this wonderful work a 4 outta 5 stars, but it's more like 4.45 outta 5. I only withhold partial star because of the length of the story. While I am always reading something and most time multiple somethings, this took me far too long to read.
NO REGRETS!!!
thank you to netgalley and macmillian audio for the advancved reading copy of the cradle of ice by james rollins.
i did not actually enjoy the first book but i figured let me give this sequal a shot because i had hopes it would be better. i definitely think the second book was much better than the first, the starless crown. this is the second book of the moonfall series. a group of people must come together and make steps to prevent the apocalypse from destroying their world. their fellowship formed from the first book leads into the second. every step they take forward costs them more than anyone could expect.
The Cradle of Ice
by James Rollins
First book in the series that I read, not needed to have read in sequence, it can stand alone. A book for middle school students, with a lot of adventure, and violence. The personal struggle of young adults in apocalyptical world that is not spinning. Have the world frozen, half burning heat and a single society flourishes in the margins. The Moon has become an imitate danger as it draws closer and closer to impact. The adventure is people trying to find a solution to the impending problem against societal butyral and fighting. It is the reconnection with the past that will save the world.
Having read "the Starless Crown," book one in the Moonfall Series by James Rollins, I was fully prepared for an epic fantasy. At 650 pages, "Cradle of Ice" continues to follow a group of characters in a world that could be ours.. When Urth's axis stops spinning, the planet stops rotating around the sun causing half of the planet to be buried in deep ice and eternal winter.
From the synopsis: To stop the coming apocalypse, a fellowship was formed. A soldier, a thief, a lost prince, and a young girl bonded by fate and looming disaster. Now, they must split, traveling into a vast region of ice and to a sprawling capital of the world they’ve only known in stories. Time is running out and only the truth will save us all.
Nyx and crew travel to the frozen dark side of the planet to discover its populated with humans and creatures. Will she be able to uncover a solution to save the planet? Meanwhile the exiled prince becomes involved in politics in an attempt to stop a war. Book 2 also introduces the reader to a dragon and beastly creatures from the air, land and sea. Within each chapter, we find action and adventure, battles, and betrayal,
Cradle of Ice is an epic fantasy blending science fiction, a locked in planet with elements of magic. This is a long haul story, but one that keeps you coming back to uncover what lies deep in the mind of Rollins.
Many thanks to Netgalley and McMillan Audio, for an escape into the Cradle of Ice. I eagerly await what lies beyond.
Thank you to NetGalley and Tor Books for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the first book, and this one was just as exciting. Here we follow two stories: Nyx and her crew journey into the mostly unknown icy realm in search of another like Shiya. Prince Kanthe and his companions journey south in search of information that may save them all.
Like book 1, this one was filled with well-developed characters, exciting storyline, and excellent writing.
In The Cradle of Ice, author James Rollins continues his series Moon Fall. You need to read the first book – The Starless Crown – or you will be lost. Rollins continues to follow Nyx and her friends on their journey to find the secret to starting the earth rotating again to stop the moon falling into the earth. If they fail, the earth will be destroyed and all humanity will die.
This was a good story with vivid scenery and characters. This book was very long but the story moved quickly. The audio-book narration was well done. I would recommend this book and the series. I received a copy of this audio-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
