The Summer Girl is a friends to lovers story that's perfect for summer. Overall a quick and easy read with relatable characters, great chemistry, and tension that moves the narrative along. Examines toxic relationships and manages to balance an easy summer read within heavier subject matter.
Spending the summer in her former hometown Avalon Bay, all Cassie wants this summer is a fling. Enter Tate - the king of flings. When Tate refuses Cassies proposition of a summer fling, the two become friends until their attraction turns into something more.
I’ve like Elle Kennedy’s books, but I haven’t loved them. I think the age of the characters is a hang up for me, and Cassie is super young in this.
Cassie Soul returns to Avalon Bay for one last summer before her grandmother sells the family hotel. Looking for a fun summer fling, Cassie runs into the wildly attractive Tate. The only problem? He friend zones her.
I initially thought this would be just a fun, spicy summer romance, and while it absolutely was, I was pleased to find there were some deeper layers there too. Watching Cassie work through strained relationships with both of her divorced parents, as well as her stepmom was really relatable and added some depth to her story. I can’t wait to go back and read the other Avalon Bay stories now!
Thank you to Elle Kennedy, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review. This book is out now!
Cassie Soul, a good-hearted girl, seeks a summer fling in her hometown Avalon Bay, where she’s spent summers at her grandparents’ resort, despite her parents’ split. She knows who to trust in her life and how to navigate challenging situations with a ‘silver-lining approach.’
Deciding to spend her summer with her grandmother after the resort’s sale, Cassie becomes neighbors with local playboy Tate Bartlett, instantly drawn to him as her potential ‘summer fling.’ The story was undeniably fun, and even though it’s the third book in a series, I still enjoyed it without feeling lost. The situations are relatable, the characters’ interactions amusing, and Cassie and Tate’s relationship has some truly steamy moments that make you feel like you’re part of this ocean community.
I hadn’t read this author before, but I loved this addition to the Avalon Bay series. A big thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing the opportunity to read and review this delightful book!
I loved being back in Avalon Bay. The drama is juicy and Cassie and Tate's meet-awkward was perfection. Accidentally overhearing someone get dumped is a bonding experience, if you want it or not. The pining is top notch, the "practice" kissing, and let me be your wingman, so much jealousy it made my heart happy. I hope this series isn't over, I want more.
Cassie Soul is a good girl looking for a summer fling in Avalon Bay-the seaside town where she was born and lived until her parents split. She's spent summers there at her grandparents resort. She visits with her father who has moved on with another wife and children and spends the rest of her time with her narcissistic mother. Cassie has learned who to trust in her life and who to grin and bear it with-looking at all bad scenarios with a "silver-lining approach".
The summer before her senior year in college, Cassie decides to spend the summer with her grandmother after the sale of the family resort. Living next door is local playboy Tate Bartlett and she is instantly attracted and decides to make him her "summer fling". This story was just plain fun. This is the third book in a series which was evident just by the way that certain characters are introduced but it in no way took from my enjoyment of it. The situations are realistic, the interplay between all the characters was amusing and the relationship between Cassie and Tate had some really steamy moments. I definitely felt like I could imagine myself in this ocean community.
Loved this book from an author that I hadn't read before. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher in return for my honest review.
The Summer Girl by Elle Kennedy is the third in the Avalon Bay Series. I did not read books 1 and 2, so this one can definitely be read as a stand-alone book. I enjoyed book 3, so I will definitely pick up books 1 and 2.
The Summer Girl is a light-hearted summer romance that follows the main characters Cassie and Tate. It has dual POV and is a friend to lovers' trope. The characters were well written and relatable. Definitely pick up this hot book and add it to your beach bag for an entertaining read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy!
I loved the characters in The Summer Girl. Cassie and Tate were the perfect match as friends and more. Their relationship and banter had me laughing. It's a super cute summer read that will laugh, smile and yes cried. The family dynamic of Cassie's life - really got me.
I've been a huge fan of Ms. Kennedy since day one and I love ever book she writes. This a light-read with romance and enough steam!
This was pure fun! I was in the mood for a light and easy beach read to end my summer and this was perfect. This is book #3 in a loosely connected series (similar to the Jasmine Guillory world), but I read as a standalone and thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't feel as if I was missing anything from the prior books. I'm a big fan of the friends to lovers trope and this was so well done, The banter and chemistry was evident from the first few pages and I adored both Tate and Cassie! I enjoyed the family drama storyline, which gave a bit more depth to this fun beach read.
I love the Avalon Bay series! When I saw a new addition was coming out, I had to read it!
This story focuses on Cassandra and Tate, and they are too cute together. This book has love, fun, and even a jaw-dropping surprise I did not see coming. Elle Kennedy's book just keep getting better and better!
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!
I love the Avalon Bay series, Tate and Cass in particular are my favorite couple in the series, their story was very fun and humorous, but also had some very emotional twists that I loved. I found myself completely drawn into them but there was one aspect that was unnecessarily emphasized and in my opinion didn’t need to be. While I wish that one aspect hadn’t been repeated so often I’m still giving this 5 stars because it was my favorite of the series!
Elle Kennedy is the queen of the summer love story!
Avalon Bay feels like home at this point and visiting it again in the third installment of this series just made my heart soar. This one might be my favorite. Cassie felt like a girl I used to be or one I have been friends with. This story gave me nostalgia about college summers where you teeter between adult life and true freedom. And Tate. Oh, man. The chemistry between these two burned hotter than the humid summers in the south.
Can’t wait for Kennedy’s next book!
The Summer Girl

Yes continue with the Avlon Bay series. I love it, Cassie is such a bad ass and when she finally finds her voice it is simply amazing.
There wasn't much miscommunication between the two main MC's just a lot of I don't know if this is a good idea.
Tate mmmm I need to find my summer fling state in real life. Hes such a player but so sweet. I fell in love with all these characters even the farting turtle.
The only one I didnt like was Cassies mother but every story needs a villain.
Elle Kennedy is an auto buy for me and still is. Her writing just makes my heart happy.
Thank you, Net Galley and St Martins Press for the eARC for an honest review.
I've read all of the Avalon Bay books, and this one is my favorite. Tate and Cassy are so likable in their own ways, it was so fun to watch them get together. I loved how three-dimensional the characters were and also getting to revisit previous characters from other books. It was spicy but also had a lot of heart and character growth. Fantastic contemporary romance and great summer book. I can't wait for the next Avalon Bay book!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read the ARC of That Summer Girl by Elle Kennedy. This is the third book in the Avalon Bay series. I've read the first but not that second book. This book could be read as a standalone but it does add some to the backstory if you've read another in the series. This is a quick, lighthearted summer read that wraps up neatly at the end. The classic "beach read." While I enjoyed the book and didn't find it hard to pick up, I did find the language often very juvenile. It is very much a YA book. I think I would have appreciated and liked this book more when I was younger.
The Summer Girl was fun, summer read that felt like the return of the Elle Kennedy I loved. For me the best book in the Avalon Bay series. Cassie and Tate were cute and had fabulous banter. I just loved them as a couple from the first meeting to seeing them falling for another. For me the best thing about Elle is her community building in her books. In this one it was much the same. I enjoyed the Avalon Bay characters more in this one than in others. Loved the beach games part of the book. Will say the family building for Cassie and Tate was great. Seeing Cassie grandmother and knowing she was already in the series to her father, sisters and step mother. Also enjoyed Tate’s family. I didn’t see the twist coming. I just really loved this book and it was a fun read.
Giving Elle Kennedy’s The Summer Girl 4.5 stars (4 stars on this grid). Thank you Netgalley and St. Martins’ Press for this arc.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and the author for sharing this ARC with me in exchange for my honest feedback!
The Summer Girl by Elle Kennedy is the kind of book that you read sitting out by the pool in the middle of July as you're transported into a story about summer romance, beach vacations, sailing, bonfires, and family drama. As the third book in the Avalon Bay series, this story focuses on a new couple, Cassie and Tate, who live next door to each other and have a friends-to-lovers romance.
Cassie has a horribly toxic relationship with her mother that is borderline abusive which really took a lot of the fun out of the book for me. I definitely understand the reason that the author included it to give her more depth and show her character's growth at the end of the book, but for such a fun summer read it just got me so down while reading!
While I did enjoy this book, I wouldn't say that the story moved me nor do I think it will stick with me. It was a cute summer read but I can't say that I loved it. Thank you again NetGalley for sharing this one with me!
The Summer Girl is about Cassie, whose grandma built the Beacon Hotel, and her summer with her grandma in Avalon Bay. She meets Tate (best friends with the boys from book #1 and #2) and after a make out session decide to be friends.
Cassie is an optimist and always finds the silver lining but Tate is a realist. Will they get along?
This book was funny, steamy and had some great characters. Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for yet another great Avalon Bay book!
A great beach read. Elle Kennedy knows how to completely engage me in the story and fall in love with the characters. I couldn’t put this one down!
A great addition to the Avalon Bay series! Fits in well without you having to know EVERYTHING. The characters were delightful and the plot was fun! I want to read more!
