I feel like I read the rest of the series in too short a time to fully enjoy this book. The mystery was good and I enjoyed how that part of the book played out. However, the over the top praising of how wonderful/clever/ brave/beautiful Katie is got on my nerves. Perhaps I just enjoy characters that are a little more flawed and human than soap opera perfection. Cisco was great as usual and a bright spot in the book. Chad just feels like a really one dimensional love interest and doesn’t really add anything to the story. All that said, I did enjoy the mystery and I will read the next book in the series. This book could be read as a stand alone if you are new to tue series. 3/5
I was initially drawn to the cover design, and thought this looked like a good thriller.
I hadn't read any of the other books featuring this detective, but that had no negative impact on my enjoyment of this one, and in fact, I really liked this book.
I warmed to the detective, finding her immediately likeable, and I felt very invested in the story. I wanted to find out who committed the murders and why, and when the culprit was revealed, it came as a surprise. I found this book a big page turner.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.
I didn't read some books in this series as I wasn't a fan of the last I read. This one was excellent and made me fell in love with the characters and storytelling again.
Gripping, gritty, and twisty
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
The Rose Girls by Jennifer Chase is a must read for anyone who loves murder mystery thrillers! I have not read any of the Detective Katie Scott books though it did not at all set me back in understanding the main character. In fact, this novel made me excited to go back and begin reading the entire detective Katie Scott series. I keep trying to think of things I didn’t like about this novel but I can’t come up with any. The story kept me guessing the whole time and itching to discover who the killer was and why things were happening! Love it- read it. You won’t regret it!
Katie Scott is one of my favourite detectives. I’ve been with her since the very start and will always come back. Her character has grown so much from the first book. The whole series is a must read. I can’t write a review and not mention her k9 partner Cisco he’s an adorable clever hero. This story is gripping and kept me interested from the start. It was well written and I couldn’t put it down.
While I was glued to this story because of the mystery, I felt the main characters were inept and almost over the top. Both Detectives Katie Scott and Sean McGavin are supposed to have military backgrounds yet some of their actions (especially Katie) caused me to wonder how they managed to survive both combat and as detectives. Maybe I am too paranoid, but given the town was full of hidden surveillance cameras, they never seemed to check their own living quarters for listening devices. There seemed to be too much sloppy procedural police work for me.
This is the 9th book in the Katie Scott series and every one gets better and better. You don’t need to have read all the previous books as this could be read as a standalone. In this instalment Katie and her partner McGaven get stuck in Coldwater Creek assisting on the investigation of the murder of a young teen. Coldwater Creek is a very strange town. There are so many things that don’t add up. There’s someone who definitely doesn’t want Katie and McGaven to find out what really happened. Katie and Gav are very likeable and you want them to find the killers and get justice for those young girls. Katie once again puts herself in danger to uncover the truth. There are some real scary scenes in this book which had me very concerned for Katie and the team. This was another fast paced and tense thriller. It will have you on the edge of your seat race through page after page. I struggled to put this book down and easily read chapter after chapter. Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via Netgalley and for letting me take part in this tour.
This is the second Jennifer Chase book I've read. It's book number 9 in the Katie Scott series, and again, it's a great crime thriller! I received it from Bookouture via Netgalley and it's just come ou, 6th of February.
Detective Katie Scott and colleagues travel home and happen to be stranded in Coldwater Creek when a brutal murder occurs. The detectives are asked to help and lead the investigation. When two more girls are found dead and the local police force messing up, Katie suspects more. The locals seem to be unwilling as well, making this a very strange case. Deadly secrets to be kept causes danger for the detectives. Will they get to the truth before it's too late? Will she survive this long?
So much happened in this book and the story had such a nice fast paced flow to it, that I needed to find the answers lingering in the book. The uncertainty of who to trust and what to do, with some questionable decisions made by Katie, made it all together quite the thrilling and suspense filled book. Some twists were quite unexpected which is something I can appreciate well!
I can't wait for book 10 in the series!
4/5⭐
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the chance to read The Rose girls, the newest Detective Katie Scott by Jennifer Chase. A fan of this series since the first book, I couldnt put it down!. It was a little different as Katie, her partner McGaven, and forensic specialist John end up being stranded in a small town when their car crashes. They are pulled into the murder of a young girl, and her friends but soon become suspicious all is not what it seems in the town. Once again Katie and McGaven are perfect partners, and with Katie's K-9 Cisco they work hard to solve the murders. This can be read as a standalone, however you may want to start at the beginning to get the full impact of the characters.
Well I think I’m a little bit late to the party here. This is book 9 of the Detective Katie Scott series and I really enjoyed it, and it read well as a stand-alone. A good plot, although maybe a bit predictable, but that in no we took away from my pleasure at reading this book. I loved Cisco, Katie’s canine companion and partner who was her K9 during her army days.
Briefly, when the body of 15-year-old Ivy Miller is found tied to a tree Katie and her partner, Detective Sean McGaven (Gav) are already in the small town of Coldwater Creek and answer the police chiefs request for additional help. Before the case has made any real progress, Katie shocked is to find that Ivy’s two closest friends have also been murdered. The town is covered with surveillance cameras, which seems a bit excessive for such as small backwater town. There is obviously something more sinister going on but is it connected to the murders?
This was a fast paced and exciting read with some creepy cultish stuff; quite scary at times. Plenty of spine tingling moments kept me on the edge of my seat virtually throughout. An engrossing police procedural novel and I’m definitely checking out the earlier books. I loved it.
Jennifer Chase does not disappoint. She has become an auto buy - and I grab one for family. Suspense. Love the characters. The small town feel. Perfection!
A 15 yo girl is found - Ivy displayed against a tree. While assisting the local police department - their mistakes just adding complications, Ivy's closest friends are found. Murdered and displayed.
Why won't the town help find the killer?
This was the first Detective Katie Scott book I've read, which did not hamper my enjoyment in the slightest. It won't be the last. Loved it!
My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Rose Girls’ by Jennifer Chase.
This is Book 9 in her Detective Katie Scott series of police procedurals set in Pine Valley, California. While I have read a number of the previous books each can be read as a standalone case as background details are provided for readers new to the series or as a reminder for returning ones.
Katie along with her cold-case partner Detective Sean McGaven and forensic supervisor John Blackburn are returning home from a conference in Las Vegas. They take a shortcut but are run off the road by an erratic driver. As they are close to the town of Coldwater Creek they reach out to the local police for assistance.
The next morning they are advised of a tragic murder involving 15-year-old Ivy Miller. Her body had found been tied to a tree with a freshly inked pink rose tattoo on her arm. In addition, the word “MORE” was carved into her back. Does this mean that there will be more deaths?
There hasn’t been a murder in this small town for as long as anyone can remember and so the local police Chief reaches out to the County Sheriff for assistance. As Katie and Sean are already in Coldwater Creek they are instructed to stay and assist the inexperienced town police department, who appear to be fumbling the case at every turn. No further details to avoid spoilers.
Again Jennifer Chase has produced a solid police procedural with plenty of surprises along the way. I was pleased when Cisco, her German shepherd retired military K9, joined in with the investigation.
Once I started reading I was glued to this book, finishing it in a single day. What a page turner!
The Rose Girls by Jennifer Chase
Detective Katie Scott 9
Intense, dark, gritty, and gripping from first page till the end – couldn’t put it down once begun.
What I liked:
* Katie: ex-military K-9 handler and war veteran, cold case detective, works for her uncle who is the local sheriff, owner of Cisco the retired K-9, suffers from PTSD, engaged to Chad, focused, sometimes impulsive, dedicated to solving cases that come her way.
* Ciscso: Katie’s K-9 partner, retired from military, companion to Katie, skilled at his job, loving and protective, helps ground Katie
* Sean: detective, Katie’s work partner, calm presence, good balance to Katie, in a relationship with Denise
* The plot, writing, character development, creepy atmosphere in Coldwater Creek that is isolated and filled with secrets
* That this story was based primarily on police procedure and not as much on personal lives of characters – though we did catch up with a few and how they are doing
* The supporting characters – new to and already established in the series
* Joshuar – octogenarian, citizen of Coldwater Creek, cagey, wise, seemed a good soul
* That the case is solved at the end with no cliff hanger
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how selfish and amoral some people can be and how little regard they hold for the lives of others.
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
I am a huge fan of the Katie Scott Books, But this one kind of missed the mark for me. I didn't feel this was as action packed as this series usually is.
I still recommend this series.
Detective Katie Scott and her partner McGaven were passing through a small town after a conference, and they started to have car troubles, and they ended up being stuck in a town called Coldwater Creek. They decided to stay overnight until they could at least get a way home. However, the chief of police of the small town called in a favor to Katie‘s uncle, Sheriff Scott and informed her uncle that there had been a murder, but his small police force was ill-equipped to solve the murder. The police Chief has requested that Katie and her partner McGavin stay and help to solve the murder.
Of course Katie intends to help. The victim was a fifteen-year-old girl whose murder rocked the small town. Things don’t go easy for Katie’s investigation. Not only are the local police not helping things along, no one in the town seems willing to talk. It doesn’t take Katie long before she realizes that the girl’s death just might connected to a very dark past involving the town of Coldwater Creek.
When the victim’s two best friends are reluctant to share any information that Katie is seeking, imagine Katie’s shock and dismay when she learns they were also murdered, one right after the other. What is going on? Returning home briefly, Katie brings her K9 partner Cisco back with her as she continues her investigation. As devastating as the murders are, all with a distinct signature, Katie soon finds herself in danger, especially as she is trying to prevent any further murders.
What a thrilling addition to the compelling Detective Katie Scott series. Katie is a strong protagonist, one who was dealt well with the aftereffects of serving in the military and she grows with each case. I love her relationships with both McGavin as well as fiancé Chad. I can’t wait for the tenth book in this amazing series.
Many thanks Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Detective Katie Scott returns from a conference in Las Vegas, with her partner Detective McGaven and forensic officer John Blackburn. When they are involved in a crash that leaves them stranded in the town of Coldwater Creek overnight.
The following morning the trio are awakened by the local police chief. Who desperately needs their assistance as a 15-year-old girl was murdered and because of a lack of officers and experience. Katie, McGaven and John must find the person who killed her.
But who would want to kill a seemingly sweet and kind 15-year-old girl? And why would Katie think that the local police chief isn't telling her everything?
And when two other teenage girls are killed. Katie is intent on getting answers. However, in a town full of secrets getting answers will not be a simple task.
And with great pacing, twists, and a killer I did not expect. The Rose Girls was a very enjoyable addition to the Detective Katie Scott series.
