Detective Katie Scott and her partner are just passing through Coldwater Creek. Not expecting any problems, she is surprised when they get asked to assist in a murder investigation in the town. The victim is a 15 year old girl. Once they start looking into the murder, it seems like the townspeople are helping them but then again…..are they actually trying to not help them? With everything not as it seems, can they get to the bottom of what is going on?
So many lies and secrets keep Katie and her partner jumping around trying to figure everything out.
The Rose Girls can be read as a standalone read.
The characters are solid and engaging. Cisco the K-9 dog is precious.
Recommended series full of intrigue and mystery.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I've never read this series before and I was really impressed with this latest installment. I dont think it was an issue that I didn't know the backstory and I fell in love with the main character immediately. They're really likeable and aren't clichéd. The books kept a good pace throughout and did a good job of building the tension. It may have been a little predictable but I don't feel that was a big deal. This is anreally good light and easy read that gives you everything you'd want in a police proceedural/ thriller
Book 9 in the Detective Katie Scott series. On the way home from a conference, Katie and McGaven are run off the road and stranded in a small town where all is not as it seems. The next morning they are asked by the local chief to attend a murder scene. This is a fast paced read with lots of twists while Katie and team try to figure out what is happening in this town.
This book is the 9th in the series, but I didn't feel I needed to read the first 8 to get all the back story. It could definitely be a stand alone book. It centers around Detective Katie Scott and her partner Detective Sean McGaven. 3 teens are murdered and Katie is called in to help solve the murder. It seems like the entire town is in on it. With all the secrets going on, she must solve the case fast before someone else dies or she gets hurt in the process.
I enjoyed the book very much. It was an easy read. The 2 main characters were likeable and went well together. The only thing that was remotely problematic was it was a little predictable. However, I am not one that gets discouraged by that. As long as a book still has some intrigue, I can overlook that I figured out part of the story. If you haven't read Jennifer Chase before, I recommend reading this one.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Jennifer Chase for this opportunity to read this ARC.
Three teenage girl’s murdered, a small town with secrets, and everyone is suspect. The small town reaches out to a neighboring police department for help with this investigation and all hell breaks lose from there.
This is book 9 of the Detective Katie Scott Series, but it reads like a standalone story. The only disadvantage you might have is lack or Katie’s backstory, as well as other character development.
Pros
~ Pacing was great, didn’t seem to drag
~ Loved the dynamic is the detectives team
~ Cisco the service dog (he was a hero)
Cons
~ Very, very predictable
~ Found some of the story to be so unbelievable (i.e. the medical examiner’s office being headquarters for surveillance… and yet no surveillance in the office as Detective Katie sneaks around)
~ The ending was a bit of a let down
Overall, it was a good read, loved the first half but didn’t love the second half. If you like a light mystery read, this would be a good choice. I was hoping for more depth in both story and character arch.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Publishing for the opportunity to read this advanced copy!
The Rose Girls is part of an ongoing detective series but the book can be read as a standalone. It is a solid mystery with several unforeseen and several predictable twists. This is a very quick and engaging read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC.
3/5 stars! Too frequently, crime thrillers have been taking the small-town cover-up route, and it is just not a plot device that I find to be very successful. In this mystery regarding dead teenage girls in a small town, no one wants to assist Katie Scott in solving the crimes and she doesn't know why. While the premise had potential and portions of this book were engaging and interesting, I didn't like the direction the story took and it felt judgy and unbelievable.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
I enjoyed “meat” of this book, although the twist at the end was not much of a surprise. The ending was kind of a let down in that it felt it was just needed to wrap up the story, but there was no big revelation. Although enjoyable, I did feel that this book was very typical for murder mysteries. There were no real big surprises or big twists that made me want to stay up all night reading. I really enjoyed the partnership between Katie and McGaven, as well as the partnership with Cisco.
I really like the characters in the Katie Scott books, especially Cisco the dog! Teenage girls are missing in a nearby town and Katie, Gaven and John are tasked with the investigation. Everything is not as it seems and they soon uncover a much bigger plot of cults and police corruption. The plot is interesting but the ending left me feeling a bit disappointed. I enjoyed the read though and I would recommend it. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
This is book number 9 in the series for detective, Katie Scott. What can I say? I Loved this book!
Thank you to netgalley and bookouture for the ARC. I will start by saying I have not ready any of the other books in the series by Jennifer Chase so was a bit dubious if I would be able to follow the story but I can safely say this book can be read as a stand-alone.
The cover and title drew me in as murder mystery is one of my favourite genres. I found the book a delight to read, I enjoyed the writing style. Jennifer is good at setting the scene and the book was very atmospheric which I love. Katie’s character is well developed but it’s written in a style that I found it easy to get to know her despite not reading the other 8 books in series. I will be going on to read the other however I find being able to pick up the book out of sequence suits me as it can be overwhelming trying to read all the titles in a well established series.
I read this book quickly as I was gripped by the suspense and the plot twists. It’s very easy to read and enjoyable. I also really liked the fact that Katie’s K9 Cisco was a focal point of the book it added to the realness of the book.
I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy detective and mystery books and I can’t wait to read more in the Katie Scott series.
The Rose Girls by Jennifer Chase is book 9 in the Detective Katie Scott series.
An intriguing police procedural.
I love when a series keeps me wanting more. And the Kate Scott series does just that!
Jennifer has a way of pulling you into her books that will just have you hooked for the beginning till the very end. Her books are always full of twists and turns throughout with great characters.
The plot was gripping and the characters were great. I love how real and believable Scott seems to be. Even the side characters are well developed.
There is drama, secrets and lies in this tense book with plenty of twists and turns.
Chase has written another nail-biting thriller with a chilling story that’s had me engrossed from page one.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I picked this series up on book four and have enjoyed every book since and this book nine was no exception to that rule.
Detective Katie Scott and Detective Sean Mcgaven along with her K9 partner Cisco are thrown into a case outside of their usual patch to investigate the deaths of three teenage girls in the odd town of Cold Water Creek where something seems not right.
The townsfolk seem to be holding back, scared of potential ramifications from some higher power that they are living under. .
Another fab edition to the series, full of detail, drama, corruption and deceit where local law enforcement seriously underestimate the resilience and determination of Katie and her team to get justice for the victims.
This maybe the ninth book in the series to feature Katie Scott, her team and of course her K9 partner Cisco but this series is still going from strength to strength. The stories are always clever and original and this book does not disappoint. Another gripping crime thriller and a great addition to this gripping and very addictive series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Katie and McGaven are way out of their comfort zone and on a really weird case. It's dark and full of suspense and surprises. These characters have grown so much and reading a book in this series is like catching up with old friends. The mystery kept me guessing. I really enjoyed the ending. I'm looking forward to the next one.
I have told it before, but I want to say it again: I am a big dog lover. That's of course one of the things that make me like this series so much.
I first of all would like to thank the author. I was a bit disappointed by the previous book due to the small role Cisco played. I am very happy to see this time Cisco had a much bigger part and I loved it. I also like Katie a lot. She is dertemined to put baddies behind bars, but she would rather put herself in danger than her beloved canine. I know he wants to protect her and she knows it too of course, but she would be heart broken and I would be too if something would happen to him.
So yes, the story starts without Cisco because Katie, Gav and John have been at a congress and the dog was being taken care of by Katie's uncle or by someone at the police kennels. Katie does not hesitate though to send for her canine as soon as possible when she is forced to stay away from home longer than expected due to a murder case she has to take care of in another town.
Our fantastic trio is reunited again and together they do their utter best to solve the mystery. Unfortunately they don't seem to be to get on top and they need help... and fast.
This is another great new installment. It always touches me more when young people are involved and it's devastating to see whey those lives are being wasted. Very good book. 5 stars
Thank you
Katie Scott series has been a fabulous one to read installment after installment; and The Rose Girls do not disappoint. It fits right in with its enthralling writing, intense plot, and complex characters.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Rose Girls, the ninth novel to feature Detective Katie Scott of the Pine Valley, California Sheriff’s Office.
Katie and her partner, Sean “Gav” McGaven are asked to investigate the murder of fifteen year old Ivy Miller in the neighbouring town of Coldwater Creek. There hasn’t been a murder there in living memory so the police department is inexperienced, but that doesn’t explain why no one wants to talk to them. Then Ivy’s two friends are found dead.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Rose Girls, which is a propulsive read that heads in a direction I wasn’t expecting. It is told entirely from Katie’s point of view, so the reader gets up close and personal with her feelings and that offers great atmosphere. Katie is off balance because she’s away from home - Clearwater Creek may be the neighbouring town to Pine Valley but it’s 3 hours away - and it’s mostly just her and Gav with no real support. That and the fact that there is something not right about the town gives the novel a tense, creepy edge.
I found the investigation compulsive reading. There are constant developments, which often offer more puzzles than answers. It might be slow going in terms of developing a prime suspect, but there is enough effort to scare them off to keep the reader occupied. The solution requires a certain amount of swallowing of disbelief, but who knows? It could be possible. Still, the journey to get there is great and I felt thoroughly entertained. What more could a reader ask for?
Katie, Gav and her K9 dog, Cisco are a great team, likeable and friendly, but with a hard nose for investigation. They aren’t particularly well developed, but it doesn’t matter as the plot is the focus of the novel.
The Rose Girls is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
This is the 9th book of Detective Katie Scott series, it can be read as stand alone. My first in this series and this book is interesting.
Firdt i think it is kind of occult, ritual, how they put the corpe so pretty, with message it become disturbing. When the murder continiue, i wonder why so sudden? The story going on. It is creapy how small town can have crime web. I enjoy Detective Katie Scott solve case.
Thank you to NetGalley for provide this book, it is pleasure to review this book.

I so love this series but I think this one the creepiest one out of them. Detective Katie Scott is travelling back from a Forensic and investigate confrance with her work partner Detective Sean Mcgaven and there Forensic supervisor John Blackburn. Katie takes a short cut through cold water creek and someone runs them of the road so they going to have to stay there the night until car is fixed. so they go to the Wild iris inn and its like its stuck in a time warp. they not been in there room long when there a knock on the door. Chief Roy Walker of cold water. there has been a homicide a young girl and its in Katie's durastiction her uncle has said they will do the case .Katie goes home to bring Cisco with her. then another two girls are murdered no one will talk to them and Katie and Sean get the impression they being watched all the time its so gripping and addictive I so recommend this series.
One of my all time favorite series to read. As to way it one of my favorite ones :
The characters themselves,
The storyline is different in each book.
Nonstop action from the frist page to the very end .
Takes place in small towns , where nothing is as simple or easy as you would think .
