This book was incredible! I was hooked from the first page and I didn't want to put it down. I was hooked the entire time and really struggled to get anything accomplished until I finished this book.
This was very well written, the characters were relatable, and the romance and faith aspects blended perfectly into the story.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own*
Suspense romance, with lots of twists and turns and scenes that didn't make any sense, the romance was sweet, I figured out who the killer was pretty early in the book which made the book a little less exciting and disappointing.
I really enjoyed Counter Attack. The romance between Nathan and Alex was sweet and the action was suspenseful. I did figure out very early into the book who Phame, the killer really was which made the book a little less exciting. The relationships between Alex and her grandparents and Nathan were the best part of the book and I would like to read a sequel.
The beginning of the new series, Pearl River starts out with the Queen Gambit killer targeting Chief Deputy Alexis Stone. Everyone is a suspect, even those in her office as the Police and Sheriff's departments join together to track the killer. Lots of action, some romance and twists makes this an exciting read. Although somewhat predictable, it is very enjoyable. Looking forward to the next in the series. Recommended.
alex is a detective when she get a call from her grandmother that her grandfather the sheriff has had a heart attack and she needs to come home. then she is asked by her grandfather to help out till he cam come back ,she cannot tell him no . on the first day they find a body and attacks just keep coming, this is a page turning story from the start and will captivate you till the end very good if you like suspense you will want to read this book i was given a copy by netgalley but this is an honest review
The twists and turns in this book keep you reading into the night. However, the author does leave some little tidbits to clue you in on the person that was the murderer. The action progressed at a good pace and the characters were well developed. If you are a lover of chess, the references in this book to that game will have added meaning for you.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy. The opinions are my own.
Alexis Stone has left her detective job in Chattanooga behind to be the interim sheriff for Russell County, TN, while her grandfather recovers. Her high school flame, Nathan Landry is the Chief of Police in Pearl Springs and their jobs cross paths frequently. The job becomes much more complicated and dangerous than she ever expected and both of them are in danger and hunting down a serial killer.
Lots of twist and turns and mystery here. A lively tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my own honest opinion.
Counter Attack by Patricia Bradley is a captivating romantic suspense story and I can't wait for the next book in Pearl River series. Alexis's first week on the job as interim sheriff is surely a week she will not want to live through again. Several murders, drug dealers, and Alexis is herself in the crossfire. Bradley has crafted an edge-of-the-seat story with characters that are relatable and realistic. My interest was kept high with twists to the plot and romantic tension. Readers who enjoy the mystery of figuring out who the bad guy is and wondering if the main characters will give into their feelings for each other will not want to miss Counter Attack.
I was given a complimentary early copy of the book by LibraryThing and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
Counter Attack by Patricia Bradley is the first in her new series, Pearl Springs. It drew me in from the very beginning! There was a lot of suspense, mystery and the right amount of romance. Add in a few twists and turns at the end that were unexpected and you have a great read! I had a hard time putting it down and can’t wait for the next book in the series!
A thrilling start to a new series! From the opening pages to the shocking ending, you are taken on a roller coaster of twists and turns that leave you hanging on to see what is going to happen next. Patricia Bradley’s books never disappoint!
Detective Alexis Stone finds herself in the middle of an investigation trying to stop a serial killer, the Queen’s Gambit Killer. Circumstances have her returning to her hometown of Pearl Springs where the killings have followed her.
Alexis finds herself working with her high school sweetheart, Pearl Springs Police Chief Nathan Landry. Alexis and Nathan have to figure out a way to deal with their past relationship and try to stop a killer before it is too late.
I am excited to see where this series goes! It was hard to put this book down with its nonstop action and likable characters.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
This is the first book in this series by Patricia Bradley and I can’t wait for more. Great read for fans of romantic suspense. Plenty of suspense and and twists and turns.
Boy, what a ride! This book will leave you breathless with non-stop action, false flags, several suspects and intense chills. You'll want to read this one with the lights on as the suspense gets deeper and creepier. The romance was clean, and I loved the characters in the small town of Pearl Springs, TN.
Alexis wasn't my favorite character, but I liked her better as the book went on and she developed in character, personality and heart. She dealt with some really tough battles in life and came out better for it in the end.
Alexis' grandparents were as sweet and loving as can be, and were down home Christian folks who knew how to whip up some Southern comfort food with words of encouragement and guidance when Alexis needed it most.
Nathan was also a kind and considerate character and friend. I like how he stuck by his neighbors through thick and thin without being overbearing or distant because he was the law.
Trigger warnings and negative elements
Alexis thinks of her old flame as being "extremely se*y".
Alex goes undercover in a bar, and it's mentioned she would normally never be caught dead wearing what she wore there. A mention of her normally concealing a small backup gun in her sports bra, but not being able to because of the low cut shirt she was wearing as part of her disguise.
Two or three of the murder victims were prostitutes/hookers.
Someone creates a vile computer game that is described as satanic and rightfully so.
For those who have a alcohol or drug addiction past or current problem, this probably isn't the book for you as both are mentioned a fair bit.
I really wasn't crazy about the serial killer vibes in this book, and honestly it was too much for my taste.
But aside from these few things, this book was honestly pretty good and sits on my shelf next to my other favorites in this genre. Mrs. Bradley writes some really great Southern fiction, and I can't wait to see what she writes next!
I received a complimentary paperback copy of this book from Revell Fiction through a Library Thing Early Reviewers giveaway. I also received a complimentary e-book from the publisher through Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review, and the thoughts above are my own.
An old flame, a series of murders, and a new job situation are just the beginning for Alex Stone. From the beginning the action ramps up and the twists and turns just keep on coming.
In the course of investigating a case involving a serial killer Alex crosses paths with Nathan her old high school flame. It isn’t long before they begin to partner in the case. She soon has a target on her back and his protective instincts clash with her independence.
I love how Alex’s character develops throughout the story as she begins to prioritize her life choices. She begins to see how stepping away from her faith has colored every area of her life. As she begins to look at things from a faith perspective she views her job, family, and relationships in different way. Hope begins to replace fear but transition isn’t easy. With the help of her grandparents and Nathan she begins to lean into a new way of thinking.
This book is another winner by Patricia Bradley and I highly recommend it.
I was given a copy courtesy of Revell a division of Baker Publishing Group. This is my honest opinion of the book.
Great start to a new series! Plenty of suspense and questions, great chemistry between Alexis and Nathan, intense mystery and a few turns I didn’t see coming. I loved it! I’m very excited for the next book in the series - so many great characters!
Counter Attack is a good start to the Pearl River series by Patricia Bradley. From the very first page it was off to the races with the suspense and crime that would entangle our lead characters. Alexis Stone is a Chattanooga detective with her sites set on being commissioner someday and Nathan Landry is her former high school boyfriend and chief of police in their small hometown of Pearl Springs. Alexis suddenly finds herself home and taking over temporarily for her grandfather, the county sheriff, who has suffered a heart attack. She also finds out that a serial killer she has been investigated has followed her and has her eyes set on Alexis herself as a victim. Together Alexis and Nathan investigate the killer as well as a local drug dealing ring.
This is a romantic suspense novel and while there is some romance the focus of the story is on the suspense and crime. After reading several of this type of genre it becomes easier to figure out the culprit before the big reveal and this was one where I had figured it out. This doesn't detract from the story but I did think it was quite obvious. I don't think having both the serial killer and the drug dealing arcs in the same novel were necessary and it felt like the latter was added just to add a second big reveal in the novel.
Overall this was a good read and I'm excited to read the second in the series.
A fantastic start to Patricia Bradley's newest romantic suspense series. I enjoyed the storyline and the prior history between the two main characters. Although I suspected who the culprit was, I kept second guessing myself. Well done.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
I read a wide range of romantic suspense authors, and Patricia Bradley has something that's just a bit special. Some authors blur together in my mind but she stood out from the first book I read. Counter Attack had me at "The Queen's Gambit...." and became a great way to escape and relax after work this week. I'm looking forward to reading all the books in this new series at Pearl River.
First off, Alexis is the sheriff. Not the deputy or the sidekick or the detective. The sheriff. Loved that right there. Not only that but she's got even bigger dreams and is brave and strong enough to pursue them even while dealing with a serial killer. And while I love that Nathan wants to protect her, clearly she's doing just fine on her own. :) Great characters with good dynamics and a mystery that managed to be about a serial killer without being more than I can handle (I take my book violence on the lightly described side).
Patricia Bradley is a standout Christian Suspense author, and this read did not disappoint! This is a brand new series, and be ready to have your heart in your throat.
Did I guess whom the culprit was? Yes, and I was right, but there were still surprises, and then second guesses! Of course, you will be ducking as the bullets fly and bombs go off!
We are offered a chance for advancement in her career as Alexis Stone's grandfather chooses her, a bit of sweet romance, and the love of family.
Now, I can't wait for the next book in this series!
I received this book through the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.
Wow! Just wow! Counter Attack is a fantastic and fast paced read that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I’ll admit I stayed up far too late finishing this book, but the suspense was off the charts good.
I received an advanced copy of this for my review. But rest assured all opinions are expressly my own.
Counter Attack was full of suspense and adventure! Great story and fairly quick read. If you love clean suspense I highly recommend this book.
